With Guy Butler, André de Villiers founded the Institute’s Thomas Pringle Collection, which in 1974 became the nucleus of the National English Documentation Centre. This developed into the National English Literary Museum (NELM), which was declared a National Cultural Institution in 1980 and has received state funding ever since. Today the museum is called the Amazwi South African Museum of Literature
