The central question being explored is ‘To what extent can employee ownership support the broader goal of poverty reduction in South Africa (and, by extension, in the developing country context)?’. This is a rather broad question, and as such this note sets out to begin the discussion on this question, rather than seek to provide a definite set of answers. The critical perspectives put forward in this note draw heavily on experiences and debates in South Africa, and particularly those within the labour movement.
