Integrating blockchain and microgrid technology to enable peer-to-peer energy trading: a business process model

- Description: Traditional centralised energy systems are coming under increasing pressure because of decarbonisation, decentralisation, and digitisation. A lack of energy security and the inability to manage bi-directional electricity flows constitute two of the biggest challenges faced by centralised systems. Furthermore, in South Africa, the country’s energy system remains monopolised with one large utility satisfying most of the country’s electricity demand. This study is motivated by the need to address energy security within such a monopolised market. To redress the problems highlighted above, this study explores how blockchain and microgrid technology can be integrated to enable decentralised energy production and trading in South Africa. As such, this study develops a fully integrated blockchain-based microgrid energy trading system model. The functional requirements of the system are presented in the form of a business process model. Amongst other benefits, an active blockchain-based microgrid energy trading system provides a means to bolster energy security for the systems’ users. A unique aspect of this study’s approach to energy trading is the utilisation of blockchain’s native tokenizing capabilities. Prosumer energy tokens are minted to create a digital currency for local peer-to-peer energy exchange. A commons-rule based approach is adopted for governing energy resources. As such, this study demonstrates that commons-based solutions provide a feasible alternative to market and profit driven trading for organizing local energy exchange. The primary deliverable of this study satisfies the request of various blockchain researchers for blockchain research to focus on holistic conceptualisations, rather than on the minutiae of blockchain technicalities. Eight core functional requirements of a blockchain energy trading system were identified prior to the construction of the process model. - Description: Anthropogenic activities are of concern in estuarine systems as they are the main source of water degradation. Water pollution in estuaries is indicated by eutrophication and the presence of pathogens and bacterial indicators which affect biodiversity and energy flow. This study focused on two geographically linked estuaries, namely the Sundays and Swartkops Estuaries. The Sundays Estuary is primarily impacted by agricultural activities in the river catchment with increased nutrients levels, particularly of total oxidised nitrogen (TOxN), likely derived from these farming activities. In contrast, the Swartkops Estuary, which is heavily influenced by urban/industrial activities, reflected increased levels of phosphates likely from wastewater and sewage water contamination from residential areas, leaking pipes, and poorly managed sewage treatment plants. The central objective of this study was to assess microbial population profiles and diversity impacted by agricultural activities in Sundays Estuary and industrial/urban-influenced Swartkops Estuary using 16S and 18S rRNA gene metabarcoding. A distinct difference in eukaryotic composition and diversity was evident between the two sampling exercises in 2018 and 2019 in Sundays Estuary. The eutrophication of both the Sundays and Swartkops estuaries was evident in the repeated occurrences of bloom events. In the Sundays Estuary, a bloom of Heterosigma akashiwo was observed in 2018 whilst Cyclotella dominated the estuary in 2019. The Swartkops Estuary exhibited seasonal variation in phytoplankton composition with Bacillariophyceae blooms in the upper reaches of the estuary in summer and increased prevalence of Dinophyceae in spring. Bacterial taxonomic variation was also noted between the two contrasting estuaries. Although members of the Proteobacteria dominated both estuaries, Gammaproteobacteria were in increased abundance in Sundays Estuary while members of Alphaproteobacteria were in high relative abundance in the marine dominated Swartkops Estuary. Members of the Bacteroidetes were the second most abundant bacterial phylum in both estuaries. Bacterial indicators of agricultural anthropogenic impacts identified in Sundays Estuary included members of Sporichthyaceae, Erysipelotrichaceae, Nostocaceae, and NS11-12_marine_group while some taxa such as the Flavobacteriaceae, Cryomorphaceae, and Halieaceae reflected their capability in degrading the phytoplankton bloom biomass present in the estuary. The urban impacts on the Swartkops Estuary was reflected by the contamination of the estuary with potential pathogens including Aeromonas caviae, Vibrio fluvialis, Mycobacterium intracellulare, Vibrio cholerae, and Bacillus cereus. Bacterial community profiles of the major water inflow points into the Swartkops Estuary included members of the Burkholderiaceae, Rhodocyclaceae, Aeromonadaceae, and Arcobacteriaceae which are typically indicative of raw sewage contamination. The Motherwell canal, which runs through informal settlements, was the most polluted input source with high levels of anthropogenic nutrients and pathogenic bacteria. The Chatty river, which also runs through townships, recorded increased nutrient concentrations and low bacterial richness and diversity which was likely due to an Arthrospira bloom at the time of sampling. - Description: The Zambezian headwaters contain diverse fish communities which support thriving fisheries. This region and its fishes are under pressure from multiple anthropogenic threats, including overexploitation and large-scale developments with potential knock-on effects for the riparian communities. Previous studies have focused on known fisheries areas and the mainstem Zambezi River, neglecting large tributaries such as the Kabompo River. Consequently, little literature is available on the diversity and ecology of the fishes that inhabit these large tributaries, hindering the effective management and protection of biodiversity. This study aimed to fill the current knowledge gaps in the diversity and habitat associations of fish communities in the Upper Zambezi, using the Kabompo River as a case study. The first objective was to provide an updated checklist of the fishes of the Kabompo River basin using a compilation of historical data and field surveys. This study detailed the occurrence and distribution of 83 fish species within the Kabompo River basin. All these species have been recorded in the Upper Zambezi, with some of their ranges extending into the Middle (29 species) and Lower Zambezi (23 species) while others have more restricted distributions. The most diverse families were the Cyprinidae (26 species) and the Cichlidae (15 species). A number of potential undescribed species, whose taxonomic distinctiveness need further investigation were also collected. Taxonomic conflicts are also highlighted for some of the taxa that were previously considered to have broad geographic ranges or disjunct distributions. Consistent with findings from other studies within the region, the current taxonomy underestimates the diversity of fishes in the Kabompo River and Upper Zambezi. The second objective was to assess the habitat use of small-bodied fish communities during the low-flow period in 2019. Reconnaissance trips identified dominant mesohabitats along the middle Kabompo River around Jivundu. A total of 139 mesohabitats were sampled across the five dominant mesohabitats identified; Phragmites mauritianus, wood, rock, Vallisneria aethiopica and bare substrate. Catch per unit effort, species richness, Shannon diversity and Pielou’s evenness differed significantly between these mesohabitats. Twenty-six species showed significant associations (p < 0.05) with a specific mesohabitat type or environmental variable (current velocity or depth). Eight species were associated with the woody habitat, with three of these, E. radiatus, E. unitaeniatus, and P. ngamensis being almost exclusively associated with this habitat. Enteromius kerstenii, E. lineomaculatus and S. depressirostris were almost exclusively associated with P. mauritianus and represent potential indicator species for this habitat. A number of species were also with both P. mauritianus and woody habitats. Nine species showed statistically significant associations with the rocky mesohabitat, with Amphilius uranoscopus and Petrocephalus longicapitis, being almost exclusive to rocky sections of the river. Therefore, species such as A. uranoscopus are potential indicators for monitoring the integrity of rocky habitats under threat from sedimentation. The strong associations indicate that this comprehensive baseline may be valuable indicators/ proxies for identifying anthropogenic induced change in the Kabompo basin. - Description: This research took the form of a case study investigating the effectiveness of a single hub in South Africa, namely Hub@Goethe in Johannesburg. The context of the creative economy and creative industries provided insight into the experiences of creative cultural labourers in the new economic model. The context emphasised the research problem which considered the difficulties experienced by creative and cultural entrepreneurs and their career paths who, through labour precarity, remain isolated from the market, without access to physical spaces, network connections and business knowledge to realise their business ideas. The literature reviewed revealed how co-working office spaces, creative spaces and hubs provide creative entrepreneurs with the spatial infrastructure, amenities, and network access to mitigate challenges in the creative cultural sectors. These spaces offer a multitude of different amenities which is specific to their community’s needs. Guided by the theory of social capital and structural holes reviewed in the literature, the effectiveness was assessed by the hub’s ability to provide network access benefits or resource endowments. The research looked at whether the hub could provide creative cultural entrepreneurs with resource benefits such as a) access to social interactions, collaboration, and knowledge sharing, b) access to business or professional skills-based education programmes and mentorship, c) access to market and d) generation both social and economic benefit. The research adopted a qualitative approach, seeking insights into the creative entrepreneurs’ experiences at the hub utilising one-to-one interviews. The thematic analysis confirmed that the hub was effective overall in providing entrepreneurs with access to benefits or resource endowments embedded in the network, confirming that hubs may be an effective tool in mitigating difficulties experienced by creative entrepreneurs in the creative industries. - Description: Marine environments are experiencing rapidly increasing temperatures, sea levels and acidification and higher frequencies and magnitudes of extreme weather events as a result of climate change. In the Agulhas Ecoregion of South Africa, there has been an increase in the frequency and intensity of upwelling events. Upwelling events result in rapid and large decreases in water temperature which can persist for several days. Variation in water temperature is known to impact the metabolic rate of fish (which are ectotherms) and in turn their activity patterns. To promote fitness related traits, the metabolic rate of fish is maximised at a specific temperature range. Outside of this optimal temperature range, the capacity of fish to perform aerobically declines. Therefore, it is expected that an increase in upwelling may place the fish under significant physiological stress. The effects of climate change can be compounded by the effects of fisheries-induced evolution; the microevolution of a fish population due to the artificial selection of certain biological traits by fishing practices. Passive fishing gears preferentially remove large (older) and bold individuals, causing reductions in population size, genetic diversity and fecundity as well as size and age truncation and the loss of large, bold and dominant phenotypes in fish populations. These demographic changes affect the adaptive capacity of fish and exploited populations are expected to be less resilient to climate variability and long-term temperature change. The resilience of fish is largely dependent on their physiological attributes, particularly their metabolic rate. Theoretically, fish with broader aerobic scope (defined as the difference between an individual’s maximum metabolic rate and standard metabolic rate) will be more tolerant to the impacts of climate change as they have energy available for adaptation. Recent respirometry and accelerometry studies suggest that populations of the endemic southern African linefish Chrysoblephus laticeps (red roman) from inside marine protected areas (MPAs) have higher metabolic rates and broader aerobic scope compared to those found outside of MPAs, particularly at thermal extremes. As C. laticeps are highly resident it is possible that fish populations protected within well-established MPAs may be more resilient to the physiological stresses caused by upwelling if they are able to maintain their activity levels despite changing temperatures. Behaviour is a proxy that can be used to infer metabolism as behaviours have associated metabolic costs and benefits. Behaviour is also a trait that can be altered by passive fishing practices which preferentially extract more active and bold individuals. Given this context, the aim of this thesis was to determine the effects of short-term thermal variability on the population structure and behaviour of C. laticeps and whether these effects differed between protected and exploited populations. Baited remote underwater stereo-video systems (stereo-BRUVs) were used to observe C. laticeps inside two MPAs (Tsitsikamma and Goukamma) and at two exploited sites (Port Elizabeth and Cape St. Francis) over the temperature range 10-18 °C. The relative abundance, size and relevant behaviours of C. laticeps were recorded. The relative abundance (MaxN) of C. laticeps was not significantly higher inside the MPAs compared to the exploited sites. The size of C. laticeps did not vary significantly by protection level either. However, the mean size of C. laticeps was considerably smaller at Port Elizabeth compared to the three other locations. There was a notable absence of large C. laticeps size classes at Port Elizabeth. The effect of water temperature on relative abundance was only seen in the exploited areas, where temperature and abundance were positively correlated. This was not the case in the protected areas where C. laticeps abundance remained roughly consistent. Generally, the effect of temperature on all measured behaviours was consistent across protection levels. An exception was that the feeding rate at Tsitsikamma MPA was significantly higher than at Cape St. Francis at temperatures below 11.5 °C. Temperature had a significant effect on the time taken for the first individual to appear in the field of view. This time shortened with increasing temperature, regardless of protection level. This was likely a result of the metabolic constraints placed on individuals by low waters temperatures and individuals would be able to pursue the bait more readily at higher temperatures. However, there was no evidence of greater metabolic scope from the C. laticeps individuals observed in the MPAs, relative to the exploited areas. Individual size and the presence of conspecifics were also found to significantly influence behaviour. Generally, size had a positive relationship with behaviour, with larger individuals more likely to feed on the bait, chase other fish from the bait (only in the MPAs) and spend more time in the field of view. The higher displays of aggression in MPAs may be an indication of fishing practices having removed bold and dominant individuals at the exploited sites. The probability of fleeing and the feeding rates of individuals increased with increasing numbers of conspecifics, suggesting that C. laticeps behaviour is influenced by intraspecific competition. Overall, this thesis did not find strong evidence that C. laticeps from MPAs performed better than C. laticeps from exploited areas, even at low temperatures. Behavioural responses to temperature were highly variable across locations and this may be attributed to high behavioural phenotypic diversity among individuals. Environmental stressors, such as temperature changes, can illicit very different behavioural responses among individuals in a population. It is also possible that C. laticeps from the exploited areas have the same genetic predispositions to physiological stress as the individuals in the MPAs due to spillover and larval recruitment from the MPAs. Indeed, genetic studies find that all C. laticeps population in South African represent a single well-mixed genetic stock. It is likely that greater sampling effort is required to resolve the patterns in behaviour between exploited and protected populations. The impact of urban gardening on household food security: evidence from Makhanda East, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

- Description: Urban gardening in townships is a common coping strategy employed by poor inhabitants to improve food security, earn income through sales, and generate cost-savings through home consumption of fresh produce. Food security is a cornerstone of human development and welfare, and the achievement thereof remains a global challenge. The majority of academic research and policy documentation traditionally positions food insecurity as a rural phenomenon. However, recent trends point to an increase in food insecurity in urban areas, particularly in low-income areas such as townships. In South Africa, rapid urbanization has led to burgeoning townships and rapidly expanding low-income informal settlements characterised by poverty, unemployment, and food insecurity. Research concerned with the role that urban agricultural production plays in contributing to the food security of poor households is scarce and not well understood. This research, therefore, aimed to contribute to the limited research which specifically examines urban food security, and the role urban agriculture play in the achievement of household food security. The study employed collective action theory and utility theory to firstly provides an in-depth examination of the determinants of participation in urban gardening using Probit regression modeling. The second research objective was to perform an impact evaluation of participation in urban gardening on selected household food security indicators including Household Dietary Diversity Scores (HDDS), the Household Hunger Scale (HHS) and the Coping Strategy Index (CSI) using Propensity Score Matching (PSM). Purposive and snowball sampling methods were employed to obtain a sample of 60 urban gardeners and a control group of 55 non-gardening households from Extension 6, 7 and 10 townships as well as Joza Location in Makhanda East, Eastern Cape Province. Households were surveyed using a structured household food security questionnaire. A focus group discussion was held with the Linomtha Community Garden members and key informant interviews were undertaken with important stakeholders such as the local extension officers. Descriptive analysis revealed that urban gardening households (UGs) had older household heads who were less educated, and that land and water availability were the dominant constraints to increases in agricultural production. Results from the probit and average marginal effects models showed that the likelihood of participation significantly increased when household unemployment and dependency increased and that households who were engaged in off-farm economic activity were more likely to participate in urban gardening. The impact evaluation was performed using PSM and Average Treatment Effect on the Treated (ATT). Analysis illustrated that participation in urban gardening does significantly reduce both the full CSI and Reduced CSI. Thus, participation in urban gardening improves the food security of participating households by significantly reducing the frequency of participating households (UGs) applying undesirable coping strategies such as sending children elsewhere other than the household, borrowing food from other households and reducing the number of meals eaten in a day due to food shortages. This study posits that urban gardening alone will not eradicate the rampant food insecurity and poverty which pervades in South Africa’s townships. However, urban gardening participation does contribute to the construction of a sustainable, urban livelihood by reducing the number and severity of the undesirable coping strategies that food insecure households employ by providing some nutritious produce as well improved social capital through gardening networks and supporting institutions. It is recommended that policy makers, at a national and municipal level, need to create a clearer directive for the integration of urban food production into the urban food marketplace thus increasing access to income generating channels for small-scale home, and community gardeners. Co-operation between private and public institutions for food security and urban gardeners needs to be fostered and awareness of opportunities to participate in urban gardens needs to be improved. Thicket expansion in a vachellia karroo-dominated landscape and its effect on herbaceous communities

- Description: Grass and forb species found in savannas are highly diverse, contributing to the structure and function of the savanna system. Where mean annual rainfall is seasonal and high enough to support closed canopy vegetation such as forests or thickets, savannas can exist as an alternative stable state maintained by disturbances such as fire and browsing. Biotic and abiotic processes act on savanna and forest (or thicket) systems maintaining both their tree and herbaceous cover at levels that ensure their persistence in those states. Studies have shown that many semi-arid rangelands in South Africa have undergone a rapid increase in tree cover (of both native and non-native species) over the past several decades. This process of increasing tree cover in semi-arid savannas, termed bush encroachment, results in a biome shift, changing landscapes that were once grasslands with few trees to ones dominated by broad-leaved trees with fewer sun-adapted forbs and grasses. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of changing woody cover and its associated changes in tree composition, tree canopy structure, light dynamics in the understory and herbaceous community composition on Endwell farm in the Eastern Cape. Canopy cover changes between the years 1949 and 2019 were analysed at 51 sites on the farm and related to historical rainfall patterns. There had been a general increase in tree cover over the past several decades on the farm, and many sites showed a change from open (0-15%) in 1949 to low (1635%), moderate (36-50%) and high (51-100%) canopy cover in 2019. In earlier years most sites had a canopy cover below 50%, and the higher canopy cover values (>65%) occurred in more recent decades. Canopy cover of ~ 50% was found to be rare in each decade. This suggests that ~50% canopy cover maybe a transient, unstable state. The period with the highest rate of canopy cover increase was 2002-2013, and this increase coincided with a high mean annual rainfall 10 years prior to 2002 and a high mean annual rainfall in most years between the 20022013 period. The period between 2002 and 2013 also had the highest number of sites transitioning from lower to higher tree canopy cover classes, indicating that rainfall may have been a factor driving bush encroachment during the past several decades. An increase in canopy cover (a decrease in light transmittance) was accompanied by changes in woody species composition during thicket formation. The low canopy cover (high light transmittance) sites were dominated by Vachellia karroo and Scutia myrtina trees, while high tree cover sites had fewer V. karroo and S. myrtina trees and were rather characterised by an abundance of thicket tree species. Species proportion, NMDS and dendrogram plots indicated that sites with a light transmittance range between 50-100% had similar tree species compositions, different from sites with light transmittances <50%. An increase in tree density was strongly correlated to an increase in canopy cover (from 2019 satellite imagery), density of trees > 3m, maximum height reached by trees, diversity of trees, total canopy volume, total canopy area and leaf area index (LAI), and a decrease in light transmittance. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to explore the relationships between canopy characteristics (maximum canopy area, canopy volume, tree diversity, density of trees, density of trees >3m, individual trees and maximum canopy height), aerial canopy cover in 2019, and light transmittance. The model explained 73% of the variation in light transmittance, mostly via the direct effect of canopy characteristics. Canopy characteristics had a strong influence on both aerial cover in 2019 and directly on light transmittance, but canopy cover in 2019 had a weak influence on light transmittance. The herbaceous layer was rich and dominated by C4 grasses such as Eragrostis plana, Sporobolus fimbriatus, Themeda triandra and Digitaria eriantha) and forbs including Hibiscus aethiopicus, Helichrysum dregeanum, Helichrysum nudifolium and Gerbera viridifolia at low canopy cover sites with high light transmittance. In contrast, high tree cover sites had fewer herbaceous species in general. Grass and forb species characteristic of these sites high canopy cover sites were Panicum maximum, Loudetia flavida, Pellaea viridis and Cyperus spp. Different sites with low light transmittance (<50%) had similar herbaceous species composition. Basal cover, richness, abundance and diversity of herbaceous plants decreased significantly with an increase in tree density, density of trees >3 m, canopy volume, canopy area, canopy cover, LAI, and increased significantly with increasing light transmittance. Most grasses had their highest densities at LAI <0.5, which was estimated to correspond to ~75% light transmittance and ~38% canopy cover and then started to decline thereafter. Herbaceous species basal cover was also highest at LAI <0.5. An SEM model indicated that herbaceous diversity, basal cover and richness responded both to light availability and to the structure of the woody vegetation directly (R2 = 0.53). While the effect of light transmittance on herbaceous communities was strong (0.41), there was little difference between the effect of light transmittance and canopy characteristics (-0.35) on herbaceous communities. Two possible threshold points, relating to two types of transitions in vegetation structure, could be deduced from this study. The first threshold occurred at canopy cover ~ 40% (LAI < ~ 0.5, light transmittance ~ 75%), at which point many of the common herbaceous species, including the dominant C4 grasses, began to decline in abundance while the composition remained characteristic of the savanna state. A canopy cover of less than ~ 40% at a site provides a suitable state for a high abundance of grass and forb species which help maintain an open system by facilitating fires. The second threshold marked a compositional shift between savanna and closed-canopy vegetation states. Savanna species (trees, grasses and forbs) dominated at high light transmittances (>50%) and were significantly reduced at low light transmittances (< 50%), indicating a possible species composition threshold at ~50% light transmittance at which a savanna state switches to a thicket (LAI ~ 1 and canopy cover ~70%). This point indicated the point where there was a significant difference in both tree and herbaceous plant compositions, with a marked reduction in the occurrence of C4 grasses at light transmittance <50%. - Description: Grass and forb species found in savannas are highly diverse, contributing to the structure and function of the savanna system. Where mean annual rainfall is seasonal and high enough to support closed canopy vegetation such as forests or thickets, savannas can exist as an alternative stable state maintained by disturbances such as fire and browsing. Biotic and abiotic processes act on savanna and forest (or thicket) systems maintaining both their tree and herbaceous cover at levels that ensure their persistence in those states. Studies have shown that many semi-arid rangelands in South Africa have undergone a rapid increase in tree cover (of both native and non-native species) over the past several decades. This process of increasing tree cover in semi-arid savannas, termed bush encroachment, results in a biome shift, changing landscapes that were once grasslands with few trees to ones dominated by broad-leaved trees with fewer sun-adapted forbs and grasses. The aim of this study was to investigate the impact of changing woody cover and its associated changes in tree composition, tree canopy structure, light dynamics in the understory and herbaceous community composition on Endwell farm in the Eastern Cape. Canopy cover changes between the years 1949 and 2019 were analysed at 51 sites on the farm and related to historical rainfall patterns. There had been a general increase in tree cover over the past several decades on the farm, and many sites showed a change from open (0-15%) in 1949 to low (1635%), moderate (36-50%) and high (51-100%) canopy cover in 2019. In earlier years most sites had a canopy cover below 50%, and the higher canopy cover values (>65%) occurred in more recent decades. Canopy cover of ~ 50% was found to be rare in each decade. This suggests that ~50% canopy cover maybe a transient, unstable state. The period with the highest rate of canopy cover increase was 2002-2013, and this increase coincided with a high mean annual rainfall 10 years prior to 2002 and a high mean annual rainfall in most years between the 20022013 period. The period between 2002 and 2013 also had the highest number of sites transitioning from lower to higher tree canopy cover classes, indicating that rainfall may have been a factor driving bush encroachment during the past several decades. An increase in canopy cover (a decrease in light transmittance) was accompanied by changes in woody species composition during thicket formation. The low canopy cover (high light transmittance) sites were dominated by Vachellia karroo and Scutia myrtina trees, while high tree cover sites had fewer V. karroo and S. myrtina trees and were rather characterised by an abundance of thicket tree species. Species proportion, NMDS and dendrogram plots indicated that sites with a light transmittance range between 50-100% had similar tree species compositions, different from sites with light transmittances <50%. An increase in tree density was strongly correlated to an increase in canopy cover (from 2019 satellite imagery), density of trees > 3m, maximum height reached by trees, diversity of trees, total canopy volume, total canopy area and leaf area index (LAI), and a decrease in light transmittance. A structural equation model (SEM) was used to explore the relationships between canopy characteristics (maximum canopy area, canopy volume, tree diversity, density of trees, density of trees >3m, individual trees and maximum canopy height), aerial canopy cover in 2019, and light transmittance. The model explained 73% of the variation in light transmittance, mostly via the direct effect of canopy characteristics. Canopy characteristics had a strong influence on both aerial cover in 2019 and directly on light transmittance, but canopy cover in 2019 had a weak influence on light transmittance. The herbaceous layer was rich and dominated by C4 grasses such as Eragrostis plana, Sporobolus fimbriatus, Themeda triandra and Digitaria eriantha) and forbs including Hibiscus aethiopicus, Helichrysum dregeanum, Helichrysum nudifolium and Gerbera viridifolia at low canopy cover sites with high light transmittance. In contrast, high tree cover sites had fewer herbaceous species in general. Grass and forb species characteristic of these sites high canopy cover sites were Panicum maximum, Loudetia flavida, Pellaea viridis and Cyperus spp. Different sites with low light transmittance (<50%) had similar herbaceous species composition. Basal cover, richness, abundance and diversity of herbaceous plants decreased significantly with an increase in tree density, density of trees >3 m, canopy volume, canopy area, canopy cover, LAI, and increased significantly with increasing light transmittance. Most grasses had their highest densities at LAI <0.5, which was estimated to correspond to ~75% light transmittance and ~38% canopy cover and then started to decline thereafter. Herbaceous species basal cover was also highest at LAI <0.5. An SEM model indicated that herbaceous diversity, basal cover and richness responded both to light availability and to the structure of the woody vegetation directly (R2 = 0.53). While the effect of light transmittance on herbaceous communities was strong (0.41), there was little difference between the effect of light transmittance and canopy characteristics (-0.35) on herbaceous communities. Two possible threshold points, relating to two types of transitions in vegetation structure, could be deduced from this study. The first threshold occurred at canopy cover ~ 40% (LAI < ~ 0.5, light transmittance ~ 75%), at which point many of the common herbaceous species, including the dominant C4 grasses, began to decline in abundance while the composition remained characteristic of the savanna state. A canopy cover of less than ~ 40% at a site provides a suitable state for a high abundance of grass and forb species which help maintain an open system by facilitating fires. The second threshold marked a compositional shift between savanna and closed-canopy vegetation states. Savanna species (trees, grasses and forbs) dominated at high light transmittances (>50%) and were significantly reduced at low light transmittances (< 50%), indicating a possible species composition threshold at ~50% light transmittance at which a savanna state switches to a thicket (LAI ~ 1 and canopy cover ~70%). This point indicated the point where there was a significant difference in both tree and herbaceous plant compositions, with a marked reduction in the occurrence of C4 grasses at light transmittance <50%. - Description: University students are a population vulnerable to sex and gender-based violence (SGBV). The use of alcohol is prominent in university life and is argued to contribute significantly to SGBV in South Africa and worldwide. Interventions to reduce SGBV at South African universities are thus a relevant social concern. One increasingly popular approach to addressing SGBV on university campuses is the bystander intervention. The bystander intervention goes to the cause of SGBV by targeting peer acceptance as the primary foundation supporting rape; arguing that witnesses to SGBV can be empowered to interrupt potential SGBV situations. The aim of this thesis was to investigate student responses to anti-rape intervention campaigns of various kinds. Different theories were examined, and this research then proceeded from a social constructionist theoretical perspective, which was relevant as it is about what individuals say, the societies formed, the rules made, the language used to pass on knowledge and the interactions experienced with others and how they all form the reality people inhabit. The study focused on the individual constructions and talk about the posters and the discursive positions he or she took up in relation to them, which is what social constructionism is interested in, as it is concerned with the language and talk people use and how these are molded by society. Forty five student volunteer participants were shown two examples of anti-rape poster campaigns (one using the bystander approach and the other not), and were asked to respond to a structured open-ended questionnaire. Responses to the questionnaire were subjected to Foucauldian Discourse Analysis (FDA). The analysis revealed the ways in which the constructions of sexual violence, perpetrators and victims in the poster campaigns shaped and limited participant responses and talk about SGBV in different ways, according to which of the two posters were being responded to. Key findings of this study showed that the bystander intervention poster produced more positive change in response to dominant discursive constructions in relation to the SGBV poster than did the non-bystander intervention poster. The species has decreased dramatically in the past 50 years and understanding how additional mortalities from wind turbine impacts affect the population is needed to ensure effective conservation efforts. This study aimed to determine the population response to this emerging threat. This study first reviewed the species-, site- and wind farm- specific traits that make Gyps species vulnerable to collision with wind energy infrastructure. It examined the monitoring practices employed during the pre- and post-construction phase and mitigation measures in South Africa and compared it with international standards. Furthermore, wind energy development may disrupt landscape connectivity and understanding which, and how habitat patches are used is needed. - Description: Objectives: The influence of detraining on the perceptual motor skills of soccer players has been theorized, but not verified empirically (Farrow & Robertson, 2017). The aim of this study was to examine detraining and its effects on the perceptual-motor skills of soccer players by employing a three-week period of no training, immediately post-season. Method: To further examine the effects that three weeks of no training would have on the perceptual-motor and perceptual-cognitive abilities of soccer players, sixteen male club university soccer players (aged 21.10±2.69 years with 12.40±3.18 years of playing experience) participated in this single-cohort longitudinal observation study. The measurements were performed in the following order with sprint testing encompassing the 40-Meter Sprint Test, aerobic performance testing by use of Intermittent Yo-Yo Test (YYIR2), perceptual-motor testing which consisted of the Loughborough Soccer Passing Test and perceptual-cognitive testing undertaken by means of Video-based assessment. Results: A three-week period of no training showed no negligible effects of detraining on sprint performance (F(2, 30) = 1.43, p = .255, ƞp2 = .09), perceptual-motor performance (F(1, 15) = 2.52, p = .133, ƞp2 = .14) nor effects of detraining regarding perceptual-cognitive aptitudes (F(2, 30)= 0.28, p= .813, ƞp 2= .01 ). Results of the study did, however, suggest the potential for increasing aerobic performance (F(1, 15) = 6.17, p = .025, ƞp2 = .29). Additionally, the study results inferred that within Video-based assessment, university club soccer players may develop a response bias due to familiarity or repeated exposure to the testing procedures. Conclusions: Results from the study fail to comprehensively show the effects of detraining on male club university soccer players in all aspects of the perceptual-skill framework, after three weeks of no training. Method: To further examine the effects that three weeks of no training would have on the perceptual-motor and perceptual-cognitive abilities of soccer players, sixteen male club university soccer players (aged 21.10±2.69 years with 12.40±3.18 years of playing experience) participated in this single-cohort longitudinal observation study. The measurements were performed in the following order with sprint testing encompassing the 40-Meter Sprint Test, aerobic performance testing by use of Intermittent Yo-Yo Test (YYIR2), perceptual-motor testing which consisted of the Loughborough Soccer Passing Test and perceptual-cognitive testing undertaken by means of Video-based assessment. Results: A three-week period of no training showed no negligible effects of detraining on sprint performance (F(2, 30) = 1.43, p = .255, ƞp2 = .09), perceptual-motor performance (F(1, 15) = 2.52, p = .133, ƞp2 = .14) nor effects of detraining regarding perceptual-cognitive aptitudes (F(2, 30)= 0.28, p= .813, ƞp 2= .01 ). Results of the study did, however, suggest the potential for increasing aerobic performance (F(1, 15) = 6.17, p = .025, ƞp2 = .29). Additionally, the study results inferred that within Video-based assessment, university club soccer players may develop a response bias due to familiarity or repeated exposure to the testing procedures. Conclusions: Results from the study fail to comprehensively show the effects of detraining on male club university soccer players in all aspects of the perceptual-skill framework, after three weeks of no training. The main problem in the estuary is water quality along with habitat loss and resource exploitation. The three Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTWs) located upstream of the estuary are the main drivers behind the decline in estuary health in addition to other threats to the water quality which are stormwater run-off inputs from the Motherwell canal and Markman canal. This study showed that the health of the estuary is on a negative trajectory towards a largely degraded estuary. Fishing, bait collection and the use of spiritual sites are the dominant vii ecosystem services used at the estuary. Through the assessment of the state of the societal system, the estuary was highlighted to be a major food source for many people living close to the estuary through subsistence fishing and bait collection for selling to recreational fishers. Effect of fire severity on Afrotemperate forest tree survival

Ecosystems such as temperate broad-leaved forests, where fire is limited by climatic conditions, are particularly at risk of altered fire regimes related to climate change. It is thus important to monitor the effects of fire in these ecosystems. Satellite remote sensing is a cost-effective way to assess spatial variability of fire effects on a landscape scale and has become an increasingly used tool for studying fire severity. In the southern Cape of South Africa during October-November 2018, a large wildfire burnt patches of Southern Cape Afrotemperate Forest (hereafter ‘Afrotemperate forest’). This provided an opportunity to investigate the accuracy of a satellite index for fire severity and the effect of fire on Afrotemperate forest survival. The first objective was to verify through field observations the accuracy of the differenced Normalised Burn Ratio (dNBR) as an index of fire severity derived from Sentinel 2 images in Afrotemperate forest. The second objective was to investigate the effect of fire severity and tree size on the post-fire survival of Afrotemperate forest tree species. For the first objective, stem fire severity, estimated from observed damage to the main stem, was recorded for 1 648 trees in 87 plots and linear regression used to test whether the observed measure of fire severity was related to dNBR. For the second objective, stem fire severity and tree survival 19-24 months post-fire were recorded for 40 species and 1 378 trees in 88 plots. Trees were considered to have survived if they resprouted from the main stem or had green foliage in the canopy. The survival response was assessed in relation to stem fire severity and tree size for all trees collectively and for 10 species (with sample size > 40) individually, using logistic regression. A strong linear relationship between dNBR and stem fire severity (r2 = 0.69, p < 0.001) confirmed the accuracy of dNBR as a measure of fire severity in Afrotemperate forest. In the fire investigated, 4 628 ha of Afrotemperate forest burnt of which 67% burnt at low severity, 21% at medium severity and 12% at high severity. The dNBR values associated with fire severity categories were comparable between Afrotemperate and North American forests, suggesting that dNBR values are relatively standard across forest types. Information on the distribution of fire severity vi facilitates investigation of further questions regarding past and future fire regimes and the fire ecology of Afrotemperate forest. The post-fire survival rate of Afrotemperate forest trees was 45% which is comparable to that in coniferous forests of North America but lower than that in temperate forests of Australia and Portugal and the neighbouring dune thicket which shares several species with Afrotemperate forest. Fire severity had a significant negative effect on survival and tree size a significant positive effect. Total variance explained by the model (for species collectively) was 40.8%, of which fire severity and tree size combined explained 13.2%, and species as random factor, 27.6%. Respective tree species showed differential survival responses – four species showed high survival (> 60% of individuals), while five species showed low survival (< 40%). This study was the first post-fire assessment of the resprouting ability of Afrotemperate forest trees and a third of the trees surveyed (for species collectively) resprouted from the stem. This suggested that resprouting from the stem is a primary means of post-fire recovery in Afrotemperate forest trees, in contrast with previous assertions that several common canopy species, including Podocarpus latifolius, Afrocarpus falcatus, Scutia myrtina, Scolopia mundii and Rapanea melanophloeos, are unable to resprout. Effect of pomegranate (Punica granatum L) peel powder meal on growth performance, gut integrity, haemato-biochemical indices, meat, and bone quality of broiler chickens

- Description: The objective of the current study was to investigate the overall response of broiler birds to varying dietary levels of pomegranate (Punica granatum L) peel powder meal (PPPM). A total of 432-day-old Cobb 500 broiler chicks were randomly divided into six experimental groups of four replications with 18 birds per replicate in a completely randomized design (CRD). The birds were fed isonitrogenous and isocaloric experimental diets designated as: T1-control diet with 0percent additives (negative control; NEGCON); T2- control diet supplemented with α-tocopherol acetate at 200g per ton (positive control; POSCON): T3, T4, T5 and T6-control diet supplemented with 2, 4, 6 and 8g/kg PPPM (PPPM2, PPPM4, PPPM6, PPPM8). The phytochemical, nutritional and antioxidant properties of the pomegranate peel powder were determined. Results showed that the South African-grown pomegranate peel (“Wonderful” variety) had rich protein and trace mineral contents. Higher (p < 0.05) antioxidant and hepatic anti-lipid peroxidative activities were recorded in the ethanol and acetone extracts than the water extract, whereas the three extracts had no toxic effects on liver and kidney cells (p > 0.05). The dietary effects of PPPM supplementation on growth performance, digestibility, carcass, and organ weight indices of Cobb 500 birds were determined. The POSCON diet enhanced (p < 0.05) feed conversion ratio (FCR) at week 3. The average final body weight and average daily weight gain were highest (p < 0.05) in birds fed PPPM2 and PPPM4 diets, whereas birds fed PPPM2 diet had enhanced (p < 0.05) FCR and protein efficiency ratio when compared with birds on POSCON. Thigh and breast weights were highest (p < 0.05) in birds on PPPM4 and PPPM8 diets, whereas birds fed PPPM4 diet had enhanced (p < 0.05) nutrient digestibility compared with those on POSCON. The antioxidant status and breast meat quality of Cobb 500 broiler birds fed diets supplemented with PPPM were determined. Meat from birds fed PPPM8 diet had the highest (p < 0.05) thawing loss, while cooking loss was lowest (p < 0.05) in the PPPM2 group. The highest (p < 0.05) ability to scavenge ABTS [(2, 2-azinobis (3ethylbenzothiazoline-6 sulfonic acid))] radical cation (ABTS+) was recorded in the PPPM2 and PPPM4 meat while PPPM8 meat had increased (p < 0.05) catalase activity. The fatty acid composition, oxidative status, and drip loss in breast meat of Cobb 500 broiler birds fed graded levels of PPPM was determined. Meat from birds fed PPPM4 diet had the lowest (p < 0.05) margaric (C17:0) and arachidic (C20:0) acids, while meat from birds fed PPPM8 diet had higher (p < 0.05) levels of eicosadenoic (C20:2, n-6) and arachidonic (AA, 20:4) acids. The POSCON had higher (p < 0.05) ability to reduce TBARS levels in meat on day-1 and day-16 of storage than the NEGCON and PPPM diets, whereas TBARS levels were lowest (p < 0.05) in PPPM6 meat on day-16. - Description: Given the historically disadvantaged position of women and their heavy reliance on climate-sensitive activities in many societies, the vagaries of the climate threaten the agrarian livelihoods of women in Chivi district. This study focuses on the impacts of climate change on women working in agriculture in one ward of Chivi district and on the feminization of agriculture during the period from 2000 to 2019. It explores how the roles of women have changed in agricultural production and in relation to household food security. It assesses women’s involvement in decision-making in agriculture as well as in household food security, and analyses the socio-economic impacts of climate change on women subsistence farmers, exploring the adaptation strategies that rural women working in agriculture implement in response to climate-risk events and threats. The study was influenced by ecofeminist theories and the Sustainable Livelihood Framework. Comparative analysis of household types was done after data gathering using participatory rural appraisal tools with women from three villages. The results show that climate-risk events and threats have resulted in feminization of agricultural labour as men branch out into wage labour, but that changing power relations in the form of decision-making in agriculture and issues related to household food security vary with the type of the household. Worsening climatic conditions have made it difficult for women to ensure household food security and to generate income through agrarian livelihoods. However, women have implemented adaptation strategies including conservation agriculture to mitigate crop failure, and to improve agricultural output and household daily consumption, and thus survive peak hunger periods. The study contributes to our understanding of the resilience of women in the Global South to climate-risk events and threats and contributes to our understanding of participatory rural appraisal tools in addition to conventional data collection tools. - Description: Given the historically disadvantaged position of women and their heavy reliance on climate-sensitive activities in many societies, the vagaries of the climate threaten the agrarian livelihoods of women in Chivi district. This study focuses on the impacts of climate change on women working in agriculture in one ward of Chivi district and on the feminization of agriculture during the period from 2000 to 2019. It explores how the roles of women have changed in agricultural production and in relation to household food security. It assesses women’s involvement in decision-making in agriculture as well as in household food security, and analyses the socio-economic impacts of climate change on women subsistence farmers, exploring the adaptation strategies that rural women working in agriculture implement in response to climate-risk events and threats. The study was influenced by ecofeminist theories and the Sustainable Livelihood Framework. Comparative analysis of household types was done after data gathering using participatory rural appraisal tools with women from three villages. This important faunal group is one of the most threatened, with climate change and fisheries bycatch mortality being the primary drivers of population declines. Understanding these threats is important for the management of threatened seabird populations. One impact of climate change and variability in climate occurs through changes in prey availability. As central place foragers, breeding seabirds have trip duration constraints due to the obligation of nest duties. This makes them particularly vulnerable to changes in prey availability within their foraging ranges. The ability to adjust foraging behaviour during environmental conditions which alter prey availability is an important attribute which can contribute to breeding success. Thus, investigating for this foraging behavioural plasticity during different breeding stages provides insights into how a species is likely to be impacted by climate change. The sooty albatross population on Marion Island was studied and displayed a degree of foraging behavioural plasticity during the five-year period of pronounced climatic variability studied. Incubating birds mainly foraged in the subtropical convergence zone (STCZ), the Sub Antarctic Front (SAF) and Subtropical Front (STF) which border it, and the region north of the STF. Brooding birds mainly used the SAF and Polar Frontal Zone (PFZ). Significantly different areas were used between years during both breeding stages. This population showed a lack of consistent habitat preferences which may offer resilience to progressive climatic variability and change. Interactions of sooty albatrosses, as well as white-chinned petrels for comparative purposes, with fisheries were also assessed. The two species were compared to shed light on possible explanations for differences in seabird-fishery interactions between the species. The impact of fisheries-related mortality (bycatch) is dependent on exposure to fishing activity and attraction to fishing boats encountered while foraging. Bycatch mortality has previously been proposed as the main cause of this sooty albatross population’s decline. Exposure and 6 attraction to fishing boats was found to be lower than that of white-chinned petrels which are bycatch prone. However, the current level of attraction exhibited by this sooty albatross population may expose a significant fraction of the population to bycatch risk due to its small population size. Additionally, all fishing boats were encountered north of the STF where non breeding individuals are now known to be distributed. Thus, the impact of fisheries on this population may mainly be mediated by more bycatch prone non-breeding individuals. Overall, the relative impact of fisheries bycatch mortality is suggested to be higher than that of climatic impacts on the sooty albatross population on Marion Island. However, this study did not incorporate dietary and demographic information which would reveal whether there are nutritional differences between years that may impact on breeding success. The study also examined how local narratives about the new food and livelihood practices in Chingwizi intersect with dominant resilience discourses, especially those related to climate change adaptation, sustainability and food security. A triangulated research design was utilised. It consisted of survey, focus group discussion, in-depth interview, and key informant interview. Qualitative research participants were selected based on their knowledge and experience on food and livelihood practices before and after displacement. This included the displaced flood victims that met this criterion, local leaders, government officials and local opinion leaders. The findings revealed that food and livelihood practices in Chingwizi had deteriorated over the five-year period under investigation. This was reflected in a diminution in livestock herds, crop production, income streams and average household monthly incomes. As a result, food insecurity was very high, and households were forced to rely more on donations. The displaced flood victims, however, adapted to the harsh conditions by engaging in a variety of livelihood alternatives, including food vending, buying and selling, craftwork, small livestock rearing, and migrating to neighbouring South Africa to seek employment opportunities. Nevertheless, efforts to rebuild food and livelihood practices were hampered by socio-political dynamics. This resulted in the loss of key livelihood assets, a situation aggravated by compensational injustice, contestations over land and resources by the host communities, dysfunctional social networks, and victims’ cultural ‘fixations’. The study concludes from these and other findings that achieving transformation in the form of adaptation, food security and sustainability following involuntary displacement and resettlement is more than just a question of resilience, and that displacement and resettlement are complex processes that create invidious dynamism for the stakeholders concerned. , Thesis (PhD) -- Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, 2022

The study was motivated by tons of litter and rubble due to neglect of the nature reserve by the community and the municipality. These problems have the potential to cause pollution and ecological degradation. The study was therefore pursued to understand the reasons behind the neglect of the nature reserve, determine how the community is involved in governance and management of the nature reserve and analyse their perceptions about the impact of Swartkop Nature Reserve on their livelihood and community development. The qualitative research methodology was utilised and primary data obtained through self-administered unstructured interviews with thirty-two participants. The participants of the study were from the community of Motherwell; particularly residents of wards 6, 7 and 9. These residents were chosen because of their proximity to the nature reserve and the fact that they are more affected than any other ward that is not as close to the nature reserve. The study found that lack of education and awareness, lack of collaboration between the community and municipality, lack of activism among residents, poor upbringing of some participants are some of the reasons that have contributed towards littering and illegal dumping. Furthermore, failure by the municipality to provide services to the community, especially in collecting refuse and provision of designated landfill, was another finding about what has contributed to the littering on the nature reserve. In terms of impact on livelihoods, the study revealed several activities such as farming, harvesting of medicinal plants, recreational activities, recycling and fishing which could enable the community benefit from the nature reserve. Based on the findings, the study recommends a redeclaration of Swartkop Nature Reserve to incorporate heritage and culture as predominant activities that should take place. Furthermore, it is recommended that the municipality should strive to halt the expansion of the informal settlement and illegal dumping of refuse and rubble in the nature reserve as these are major risks that threaten the biodiversity of the nature reserve. A partnership was proposed between the municipality and the community vi through its Community Trust and Ward-Based Cooperatives as consultative platforms. - Description: Acacia melanoxylon R.Br. is a prominent alien and invasive species in many parts of the world and evidence exists of its adverse effects on indigenous forest community composition through allelopathy and alteration of light regimes. The species also occurs extensively in Southern Cape Afrotemperate Forest (South Africa) and is thought to suppress indigenous Afrotemperate Forest tree seedlings through various mechanisms such as the alteration of natural light regimes or allelopathy, although this has not been rigorously verified. This study aimed to investigate whether Acacia melanoxylon has a suppressive effect on Afrotemperate Forest tree recruitment. Firstly, we assessed the potential allelopathic effect of Acacia melanoxylon and an indigenous Afrotemperate Forest species Olea capensis macrocarpa (C.H.Wright) I.Verd. on the germination of Acacia melanoxylon and three prominent indigenous tree species’ seedlings in a nursery trial. Germination of the indigenous species failed; however, we were able to compare the germination of Acacia melanoxylon among the three treatments, namely Acacia melanoxylon leachate, Olea capensis leachate, and no leachate. The average germination of Acacia melanoxylon was 67% and germination was marginally higher under Acacia melanoxylon leachate and Olea capensis leachate, respectively, than under the control. This suggested that germination of the species is improved, or at the least, unaffected, by leachates of itself or that of a common indigenous canopy species. We then critically evaluated the germination requirements of the indigenous test species to determine probable reasons why their germination failed in our trial. The most plausible explanation for the germination failure could be that the trial period did not encompass an entire winter season and may not have provided adequate cold stratification. We concluded that the lack of sensitivity of Acacia melanoxylon to leachates of itself or a common indigenous overstorey species likely contribute to its success as an invasive species in Southern Cape Afrotemperate Forest. Secondly, we investigated, through field surveys, whether Acacia melanoxylon affects indigenous Afrotemperate Forest tree sapling composition and light regimes underneath its canopy. Using a paired plot design, we compared light intensity, tree sapling species richness, diversity, and density underneath 30 overstorey Acacia melanoxylon trees and 30 indigenous counterparts. We recorded 2506 indigenous tree saplings from 29 species in the 60 plots and found that there were no significant differences in richness, diversity, or v density of saplings underneath Acacia melanoxylon compared to that under indigenous counterparts. Light intensity did not differ significantly underneath Acacia melanoxylon and indigenous canopies, however light intensity varied significantly more underneath the canopies of Acacia melanoxylon. Canonical correspondence analysis of the abundance of sapling species confirmed that sapling composition was not largely determined by the overstorey species. We concluded that Acacia melanoxylon does not significantly alter indigenous tree species composition underneath its canopy at the typical densities (<3 trees per hectare) at which it occurred in the forests of the Garden Route National Park that we surveyed. Nevertheless, populations of Acacia melanoxylon in the forest interior still act as a source of propagules for invasion in forest margins, riparian areas, and neighbouring fynbos shrubland. Nevertheless, populations of Acacia melanoxylon in the forest interior still act as a source of propagules for invasion in forest margins, riparian areas, and neighbouring fynbos shrubland.
