- Description
- Tholeiitic basalts build the Mimosa Formation, the uppermost stratigraphic unit of the Suurberg Group in the northern part of the Algoa Basin. Exposures are very poor and the tectonic significance of the Suurberg rocks and the origin of the Mimosa basalts are contentious. Drilling of stratigraphic boreholes at four localities allowed detailed sampling of the basalts from two cores 90 km apart for geochemical, age and palaeomagnetic investigations.
