- Description: Much has been written on the scourge of human trafficking, with majority of previous research focussing on trends, forms, as well as the regulatory framework for countering the scourge. Despite the presence of a vast body of knowledge on human trafficking, less attention has been given to the operational dynamics that are involved in the investigation and prosecution of human trafficking cases. This paper, which is based on a literature and documentary survey, evaluates the challenges that are encountered by the criminal justice players in responding to human trafficking. The paper specifically focuses on the challenges that are faced by law enforcement agencies in the investigation of human trafficking, as well as the challenges that are faced in the prosecution of human trafficking offenders. Whilst the paper takes a global approach to the problem, much attention is given to South Africa and Zimbabwe- two neighbouring Southern African nations. Keywords: human trafficking, investigations, prosecution, victim protection

- Description: The emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic at the onset of the year 2020 brought unprecedented suffering to humanity. Economic activities in virtually all nations across the globe were brought to a shuddering halt, with the third world suffering the worst effects on the economic front. The health security of nations across the globe was shaken, as nations came to terms with the surging health needs for the infected citizens. In order to grapple with the pandemic, nations took drastic measures, chief among them being the implementation of lockdowns, coupled with harsh restrictions. These measures, however, came at a cost. This paper explores the impacts of the restrictive measures that were implemented by the Zimbabwean government to combat COVID-19 pandemic. The paper interrogates these measures in the context of the national security discourse. In the analysis, the paper also makes reference to South Africa- a more developed nation and Zimbabwe’s neighbour. Keywords: COVID-19 , national security, health security, lockdown

- Description: This study was conducted to explore views about the execution of powers and functions of the police in the light of related challenges. This study made use of data from a total of 83 adult participants (a survey involving 73 individuals, and 10 in-depth interviews), including males and females of diverse occupational backgrounds from Bindura and Mount Darwin policing districts in Zimbabwe. A closed-ended, mostly Likert-scale-based questionnaire was used to collect data about the prevalent forms of police abuse of powers and functions, while an in-depth interview guide was provided to harvest information qualitatively. Findings reveal that police officers abuse their powers through unlawful arrests, arbitrary search and seizure, excessive use of force, unlawful methods of investigation, and ill treatment of detainees. Though not as prevalent as other forms of abuse, malicious criminal prosecution and partisan policing were also cited.K EYWOR DS: powers, abuse, function, police, Zimbabwe
