- Description: If you cannot measure, you cannot manage. This is an age old saying, but still very true, especially within the current South African cybercrime scene and the ever-growing Internet footprint. Due to the significant increase in cybercrime across the globe, information security specialists are starting to see the intrinsic value of logs that can ‘tell a story’. Logs do not only tell a story, but also provide a tool to measure a normally dark force within an organisation. The collection of current logs from installed systems, operating systems and devices is imperative in the event of a hacking attempt, data leak or even data theft, whether the attempt is successful or unsuccessful. No logs mean no evidence, and in many cases not even the opportunity to find the mistake or fault in the organisation’s defence systems. Historically, it remains difficult to choose what logs are required by your organization. A number of questions should be considered: should a centralised or decentralised approach for collecting these logs be followed or a combination of both? How many events will be collected, how much additional bandwidth will be required and will the log collection be near real time? How long must the logs be saved and what if any hashing and encryption (integrity of data) should be used? Lastly, what system must be used to correlate, analyse, and make alerts and reports available? This thesis will address these myriad questions, examining the current lack of log analysis, practical implementations in modern organisation, and also how a need for the latter can be fulfilled by means of a basic approach. South African organizations must use technology that is at hand in order to know what electronic data are sent in and out of their organizations network. Concentrating only on FreeBSD PF firewall logs, it is demonstrated within this thesis the excellent results are possible when logs are collected to obtain a visual display of what data is traversing the corporate network and which parts of this data are posing a threat to the corporate network. This threat is easily determined via a visual interpretation of statistical outliers. This thesis aims to show that in the field of corporate data protection, if you can measure, you can manage.

The results reveal that the gender and education of SME owners and the age, size and legal status of SMEs are the entrepreneurial and firm characteristics that are positively related to networking by SMEs. In addition, the results indicate that there is a positive relationship between networking and access to finance and performance of SMEs. The results of this study further reveal that access to debt finance partially mediates the relationship between networking and performance of SMEs. Lastly, the study recommended that SMEs should network more to gain access to information, resources and contact sharing. This will increase the likelihood of SMEs obtaining finance, and will also improve the performance of SMEs.

A model for adaptive multimodal mobile notification

Having a system that notifies the user of important messages using the most appropriate medium and device will benefit users that rely on time critical information. There are several existing systems and models for mobile notification as well as for adaptive mobile notification using context awareness. Current models and systems are typically designed for a specific set of mobile devices, modes and services. Communication however, can take place in many different modes, across many different devices and may originate from many different sources. The aim of this research was to develop a model for adaptive mobile notification using context awareness. An extensive literature study was performed into existing models for adaptive mobile notification systems using context awareness. The literature study identified several potential models but no way to evaluate and compare the models. A set of requirements to evaluate these models was developed and the models were evaluated against these criteria. The model satisfying the most requirements was adapted so as to satisfy the remaining criteria. The proposed model is extensible in terms of the modes, devices and notification sources supported. Petrophysical analysis of thermo-tectonic effects linked to Lower Jurassic dolerite intrusions in sedimentary rocks of the Main Karoo Basin, with implications for shale gas development in South Africa

- Description: Prevalent dolerite sills and dikes emplaced in the sedimentary rocks of the main Karoo Basin are associated with contact metamorphism and devolatilization of carbon-rich shales of the Lower Ecca Formation. These thermal effects may have significant bearings on the potential of shale gas development in the Karoo. This research aims to study and quantify the effects of dolerite intrusions on the Karoo sedimentary rocks along contact aureoles in shales and sandstones of the Ecca Group based on drill core samples collected from deep SOEKOR boreholes, and field samples from the Lower Beaufort Group of the Eastern Cape Province. Variations in host rock minerals, chemistry, and porosity are determined using analytical techniques including: petrography, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) on samples collected along the thermal aureoles at various distances away from the intrusions. Using the determined mineral phase equilibria, geochemistry and thermal modelling, the pressure-temperature (P/T) conditions that prevailed during contact metamorphism are evaluated to constrain the thickness of the contact aureoles in deep boreholes, and to further evaluate potential loss of shale gas. The mineral composition of the samples generally consists of quartz, feldspar, illite/smectite, calcite, muscovite, and pyrite. Metamorphic minerals close to contacts with the sills include andalusite-chiastolite, biotite, muscovite, illite, forsterite, and diopside. SEM imaging confirms that the hornfels samples are compact and that the metamorphic minerals reduce and limit porosity to grain boundaries, and in few cases intra-mineral porosity occurs within individual crystals. The porosities are in the range of mesopores (2-50 nm) and micropores (< 2 nm). The data also suggests that the thermal alteration of the Ecca shales were short lived (e.g. 10-100 years). Disequilibrium metamorphic textures such as irregular grain boundaries, and inclusions in andalusite and cordierite confirm that the elevated temperatures did not last long enough to accomplish (re)crystallization and create equilibrium textures. To test the effect of geothermal gradients on the initial host rock temperatures prior to intrusive activity, and how these temperature differences affect the contact aureole thickness, thermal models were simulated for the deep boreholes using three geothermal gradients: 30 ◦C/km, 35 ◦C/km, and 40 ◦C/km. In addition, the depths were re-calculated based on post-emplacement erosion of the overlying host rocks (2000-3000 m). Heat flow away from dolerite sills through the host shales were modelled using convection and conduction heat flow mechanism separately, to assess differences and/or similarities in cooling trends. The models show that a 10 ◦C increase in geothermal gradient (from 30 ◦C /km to 40 ◦C/km) significantly affects the initial temperature of the host rocks and in turn decreases the rate at which the dolerite sills cool. Thermal modeling data is coherent with the mineralogy of the contact zones. Andalusitechiastolite and cordierite porphyroblasts occur within 10-20 m of the contact aureole, together with biotite and authigenic muscovite. Literature data shows that crystallization of this mineral assemblage in pelitic hornfels occurs at temperatures ranging between 450 ◦C and 600 ◦C. Thermal modelling results indicate maximum temperatures of shales at the contact with dolerite sills range between 650 ◦C to 700 ◦C. Temperatures decrease rapidly to approximately 400 ◦C within 10-20 m away from the contacts. The data also shows that thermal perturbation flanking the sills were short-lived, with maximum temperatures reached within the first 100 years of cooling depending on the thickness of dolerite sills and the combined effect of multiple sill intrusions. Data acquired from the thermal models and literature was used to evaluate gas loss estimations. The calculations conducted around a 45 m thick sill, suggests that at least 4- 6 TCF of gas was liberated from the Whitehill Formation during Karoo sill emplacement. Strategies employed by teachers to assist Grade 4 learners transition from mother tongue instruction to English as a medium of instruction

- Description: In most South African schools, there is a transition period, where lower primary learners receive instruction in their mother tongue from grades 1-3 and from grade 4 onwards, English becomes the medium of instruction. This study explored how learners in primary schools in Grade 4 learn through the medium of English, since IsiXhosa is their home language and they come from a community of pre-dominantly IsiXhosa speakers where English is seldom heard or spoken. The study is concerned with the language and literacy practices at this crucial transition, and investigated to what extent learners in the Grade 4 have learnt / been taught / have developed sufficient basic inter-personal communication skills, BICS, (Cummins, 2000), in isiXhosa to make the switch to learning all subjects in English. The theoretical frameworks adopted for this study was Cummins Language theories. Within this study an interpretive paradigm aligned with the qualitative approach and the case study design for understanding the phenomena, were adopted. The study covered three primary schools which were purposively selected. The participants comprised of six female teachers teaching Life Skills in Grade 4 from five mainstream schools were also purposively selected. Semi structured interviews, observation and document analyses were used as data collection instruments. A qualitative thematic approach was used for data analyses and the emerging results were organised into different themes reflecting participant’s responses. The findings revealed that teachers did not use lesson plans as they have indicated. Even though literature emphasises the importance of lesson planning, teachers find it tedious to plan. It was established that no assessment tasks were done when the lesson was concluded. Effective teaching without valid and reliable assessment tasks would result in meaningless teaching and learning interactions. It was revealed that teachers used teaching aids, but only a few. The information demonstrated that teachers did not code switch to assist with learner understanding. Instead, they presented their lessons in English which hampered learning. The study discovered that teachers used the old traditional style of teaching, instead of learner-centred instruction, which is interactive and participatory. The study exposed that the biggest challenges learners encountered, was the language of teaching and learning, English. However, the findings established that learners where unable to understand and express themselves in English. English lessons had minimal learner participation, because learners did not have the necessary competence and English was not their home language. The study further revealed that the English language leads to a barrier of effective learning and placed learners at a disadvantage. The findings further suggested that a lack of resources had an impact on teaching and learning which affected learners’ acquisition and understanding of the medium of instruction. The findings claimed that slow and progressed learners exist in classrooms and need individualised and specialised teaching. It was found that parental involvement, translation, learner participation, group work and teaching aids assisted with the challenges teachers encounter during transitioning in the subject Life Skills. It is recommended that the school develop a structured programme to provide support and assistance for teachers with lesson planning. Assessment task should be included in each lesson and should be viewed as an essential part of teaching and learning. Teachers should make use of multiple and a variety of teaching aids. Code switching and translation should be used, as it assists with understanding, accuracy and clarity. An appropriate mix of teaching styles should be used, to reach all leaners in a classroom. Teachers can improve learners English, by incorporating learners’ home language, code-switching and teaching aids in class. Slow and progressed learners could be assisted by using a variety of teaching materials, individual attention, remedial education, peer tutoring, differentiated teaching and curriculum adaptation. A structured learning support programme providing learning support for learners with barriers to learning, can be utilised. It is recommended that parents be involved in their children’s learning. The schools should set up effective monitoring and support mechanism for teachers in order to ensure that quality teaching and learning takes place in schools. Regular monitoring and evaluation by the DoE might assist to support teachers. - Description: In most South African schools, there is a transition period, where lower primary learners receive instruction in their mother tongue from grades 1-3 and from grade 4 onwards, English becomes the medium of instruction. This study explored how learners in primary schools in Grade 4 learn through the medium of English, since IsiXhosa is their home language and they come from a community of pre-dominantly IsiXhosa speakers where English is seldom heard or spoken. The study is concerned with the language and literacy practices at this crucial transition, and investigated to what extent learners in the Grade 4 have learnt / been taught / have developed sufficient basic inter-personal communication skills, BICS, (Cummins, 2000), in isiXhosa to make the switch to learning all subjects in English. The theoretical frameworks adopted for this study was Cummins Language theories. Within this study an interpretive paradigm aligned with the qualitative approach and the case study design for understanding the phenomena, were adopted. The study covered three primary schools which were purposively selected. The participants comprised of six female teachers teaching Life Skills in Grade 4 from five mainstream schools were also purposively selected. However, despite a growing body of research that supports the positive impact that effective performance management can have on an organisation’s performance, evidence suggests that organisations in South Africa and elsewhere are not implementing the practices that are recommended by the theory of best practice in Human Resources and performance management (Kock, Roodt & Veldsman, 2002:83). The institutionalisation of performance management in the South African public service after 1994 came as a result of the need to change the legacy of poor performance of the public service (Malefane, 2010:1). This study seeks to examine the effectiveness of the implementation of performance management in the Provincial Treasury, Province of the Eastern Cape (Provincial Treasury). Literature reveals that there is consensus on the view that performance management is a tool that contributes to the effective management of employees in order to yield high organisational performance. Armstrong and Baron (2005 :vii) contend that if performance levels of individuals are raised, better organisational performance levels will follow. According to Dessler, (1997:372) performance management is a systematic approach to managing people, goals, measurement, feedback, and recognition as a way of motivating employees to achieve their full potential in line with the organisation’s objectives. In the South African context, performance management is described in terms of its role and outcome with regard to employee development; hence it is widely referred to by public sector employees as a Performance Management and Development System (PMDS) (Malefane, 2010:7). The Annual Performance Plan (APP) of the Office of the Premier (OTP APP, 2010/11:5) insists that the Eastern Cape Provincial Administration is still plagued with inter alia, a work ethic that is less desirable, weak human capital management culture, poor compliance with policies, lack of accountability and discipline as well as capacity challenges in critical areas which include planning, financial management, monitoring and reporting as well as systematic performance and an inability to respond to identified service delivery challenges. Public sector reforms have been adopted in this province in an attempt to improve performance in order to meet service delivery initiatives. A purposive sampling technique was used to select 30 participants of the Provincial Treasury (employees between salary levels 6 and 8 as well as managers from salary levels 9-13). A qualitative approach was preferred in this study to enhance objectivity which would have vanished if quantitative or experimental strategies were employed. The empirical findings revealed that the employees and the management of this Department perceive that there is no clearly defined purpose of performance management. There is also a feeling that performance management is not useful in identifying under-performers and ineffective in raising the performance of employees. Consequently, it is unable to assist the subordinates to grow. Others felt that performance management is not a developmental tool. It also emerged from the empirical findings of this study that the current rating system does not serve its intended purpose and therefore it should be replaced. Recommendations and suggestions are adopted in this study to address these perceptions.

Derridian concepts of deconstruction will be referenced in an attempt to focus the argument of this research, which comments on choreographic transformations since 1994, by subverting the influence of the 'violent hierarchies' enforced by the apartheid regime on South African cultural life and choreographic identity. The researcher draws on these considerations in order to explore the hybrid nature of South African choreography that has emerged since 1994. Chapter one examines the fallacious nature of historical discourse through a consideration and application of Derrida's notions of deconstruction and fabrication. Chapter two explores the notion of choreographing history in theatre through a focus on the objective/subjective fallacy and the history of the body as a textual medium. Chapter three focuses the study specifically in biography as a discourse within the idea of theatre. This approach to biography can be encapsulated by the phrase 'telling lives'. This chapter also explores the relationship between the traditional binaries of writing as a purely cerebral act and choreography as a purely visceral experience. Chapter four brings the focus to the specific post-apartheid South African context. This chapter considers the hybrid forms of dance emerging in South Africa as well as the notion of protest in relation to theatre and dance. The final chapter is an investigation and analysis of two choreographic works created by South African choreographers since 1994 in relation to biography and concepts of deconstruction. These works are Gary Gordon's Bessie's Head (2000) and Gregory Maqoma's Miss Thandi (2002). The focus of the analysis also reveals the inherent difficulty in objective interpretation, and considers the problematics of collaboration and autobiography when choreographing within a biographical context.

In-betweenness: a postcolonial exploration of sociocultural intergenerational learning through cattle as a medium of cultural expression in Mpembeni, KwaZulu-Natal

- Description: This case study was conducted in a small rural community called Mpembeni, in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province. It was motivated by my observation of high levels of competence in ‘cattle knowledge’ amongst children coupled with a simultaneous failure at school. I view schools as integral parts of the community and consider them as being influenced by the community, which they in turn influence. This study set out to understand that which embodied informal learning in home/pasture-based contexts as well as formalised learning processes in schools. I used Sociocultural theory as the most congruent of educational theories to surface and illuminate the intergenerational learning processes that were taking place in the area. This warranted my use of research investigation methods that could, in non-intrusive ways, expose the everyday community practices that related to cattle as a particular medium of cultural expression. Ethnography, sourced from anthropology, aided by ethnomethods, was not only compatible with my study and the way in which I wanted to write out the research report, but also with my educational theory and its counterhegemonic intents. To understand the colonialities that framed the discord that embodied home and school as learning contexts, I used postcolonial theory, not only as a lens but as a counterhegemonic response. This theory also informed my research methodology as well as afforded me the reflexivity tools for an examination of my own intergenerational learning and the relational identities of myself as ‘Other’ in the lives of the research participants. It further facilitated the exploration of the potential for potential hybrid third spaces within the bubbling meeting nodes of the socio-cultural context of school and home/pasture based settings of learning. I observed cattle herding related practices, interviewed children, their parents and/or carers, dipping tank managers, livestock inspectors, community elders and members. I also analysed some of the written and unwritten content that made up the formal and informal based learning processes and reviewed some of the most recent South African Curriculum Statements and related texts on the representations of cattle. I sought views from teachers on their interactions with the people of Mpembeni, whose children they taught. I also explored axes of tension, silences and presences on anything related to cattle in schools. I argue and make a case for the development of thought by African scholars to advance Africa’s education rather than aid mimicry and the importation of theories of little congruence and relevance to the African context and Africa’s future. The study has made some contributions to new knowledge. This is in its exploration of sociocultural intergenerational methods and techniques that are employed for learning in community contexts, highlighting the importance of surfacing and understanding of children’s knowledge and experiences. The study has gone further to deliberate the in-betweenness of school and home learning environments, highlighting and unsilencing silenced, peripherised, new, old, considered irrelevant in the past, context and time congruent and liberatory knowledges. I propose that the knowledges located in these cleavages of difference be utilised to transform and create learning bridges between home and school environments. I propose that those ways of knowing that see others as nothings, be exposed and unlearned. Methods of learning that naturally unfold at home could be replicated at school with a recognition of the intergenerational methods, techniques, practices and the learning values in a critically constructive manner that narrows difference and othering.

Currently Activate is committed to informing Rhodes University students, staff and community members about relevant issues, mainly on campus. These issues range from hard news to more creative journalism. While Activate acts as a news source, one of its main objectives it to be accessible as a training ground for student journalists. The newspaper is run entirely by the students and is published twice a term. Activate is a free newspaper which receives an annual grant from the Rhodes University Student Representative Council, however, majority of its revenue is generated through advertising.
