- Description: The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs) using the hydrosol extract of the dry stem bark of Acacia mearnsii as reducing and capping agents, and their antinociceptive properties are hereby reported. By varying the temperature and reaction time, the temporal evolution of the optical and morphological properties of the as-synthesized material was investigated. The NPs were characterized by UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and x-ray diffractometry (XRD) The optical analyses show that the position of the maximum surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak is red-shifted as the reaction temperature decreased. The TEM micrographs show that the as-synthesized Ag-NPs are spherical while the X-ray diffraction shows that the material is highly crystalline with face-centered cubic structures. The anti-inflammatory efficacy, analyzed by the formalin model, indicates that the as-synthesized Ag-NPs are very effective, with an inhibition rate of about 76%.

Phytomedical Studies of Medicinal Plants Traditionally Used for The Treatment of Chest and Cough Related Diseases in The Eastern Cape

- Description: GENERAL ABSTRACT Herbal plants play a fundamental role in the treatment of coughing and chest related diseases particularly in remote areas of Eastern Cape where health care facilities are sparsely located. The phytomedical studies of plants implicated in the treatment of coughing and chest related diseases in the OR Tambo District Municipality,Eastern Cape was investigated. This study was aimed at documenting the commonly used plants and validates their efficacy against different organisms which are notorious for causing coughing and chest related diseases. The methods employed for the present study include interviews with traditional healers, herbalist and knowledgeable rural dwellers that provided ethnobotanical information and identified 17 plants used for the treatment of coughing and chest related diseases in the study area. Of these the three medicinal plants that were reported to be most widely and frequently used by the local people as remedies for coughing and chest related diseases were Tetradenia riparia, Plectranthus laxiflarus and Eucalyptus renans. T. riparia was selected for further study based on its frequency of citation during the interviewees. Hexane, ethyl acetate, methanol, dichloromethane and Aqueous extracts of Tetradenia riparia were screened against ten bacterial species. The dichloromethane extract was the only extract that did not show any activity against bacterial strains. All other four extracts exhibited various degrees of activity with the ethyl acetate extract showing the highest activity against the bacterial species used during the antibacterial assays. Bioactivity-guided fractionation of the leaves of Tetradenia riparia yielded one pure compound. The antimicrobial investigation of the isolated compound showed inhibitory activity against all tested microorganisms. It is noteworthy that the isolated compound showed a significantly higher inhibitory activity than the actual crude extract, this is suggestive of the powerful ability of the compound in working independently.The present study has lend scientific credence to the folkloric use of T.riparia in the management of cough on chest related disorders.

She has served as an Associate Editor for the journal Frontiers in Public Health and is on the editorial board of two journals, Bioinformatics and Clinical Interventions in Aging. She is a member of several knowledge bodies including the International Hypertension Society.As an accomplished and passionate scholar, Professor Nkeh-Chungag enjoys both national and international recognition in her field of research. Her focus on the risk for cardiovascular diseases in children of African ancestry has attracted interest and funding from both national and international organizations. - Description: Higher education institutions are faced with pressure to change to meet academic as well as socio-economic needs. These changes are often aimed at achieving financial viability, increased institutional efficiency, and solving problems of fragmentation in the university. Universities can change in their structure, operations, systems, or and in the use or adoption of technology. The effective implementation and management of these requisite changes is the key challenge to organisations facing change. Walter Sisulu University, a comprehensive university in the Eastern Cape, has formulated a strategy to turn the university around. Included in the strategy is a project on the academic enterprise. The level of readiness for change is viewed to be a determining factor in making any change successful. Since readiness is not automatic, there is a need to prepare individuals to have a positive attitude towards the change and to embrace the proposed change initiative. This study is informed by the quest to know what will encourage and prepare employees for the implementation of the new Programme and Qualification Mix (PQM) at the University. The study therefore sought as its main purpose to explore factors influencing individual readiness for change in the PQM at Walter Sisulu University. A qualitative approach was adopted in the study. Models of change readiness were reviewed to identify themes that would be used to explore the levels of readiness amongst university academic employees who were to implement the new Programme and Qualification Mix. Documents were analysed to understand the change in PQM and face-to-face, semi-structured interviews held to solicit the views of academic employees regarding enablers or inhibiters of their readiness. Results highlighted the poor preparation of academic employees at Walter Sisulu University to support and implement the change. Key concerns of employees included dissatisfaction with the inadequate and inappropriate communication strategies, uncertainty about the suitability of the changed PQM, doubt regarding leadership support for change, as well as the perceived risk of the change. However, the main enablers were the comprehension by WSU employees of the need for a new PQM to address the poor alignment with university vision and HEQSF requirements, an appreciation of the lack of social relevance of the programmes, and confidence that they have the requisite skills and qualifications. The perceived benefits for the institution provided the needed spur for embracing the new PQM.

Universities can change in their structure, operations, systems, or and in the use or adoption of technology. The effective implementation and management of these requisite changes is the key challenge to organisations facing change. Walter Sisulu University, a comprehensive university in the Eastern Cape, has formulated a strategy to turn the university around. Included in the strategy is a project on the academic enterprise. The level of readiness for change is viewed to be a determining factor in making any change successful. Since readiness is not automatic, there is a need to prepare individuals to have a positive attitude towards the change and to embrace the proposed change initiative. This study is informed by the quest to know what will encourage and prepare employees for the implementation of the new Programme and Qualification Mix (PQM) at the University. The study therefore sought as its main purpose to explore factors influencing individual readiness for change in the PQM at Walter Sisulu University. A qualitative approach was adopted in the study. Models of change readiness were reviewed to identify themes that would be used to explore the levels of readiness amongst university academic employees who were to implement the new Programme and Qualification Mix. Documents were analysed to understand the change in PQM and face-to-face, semi-structured interviews held to solicit the views of academic employees regarding enablers or inhibiters of their readiness. Results highlighted the poor preparation of academic employees at Walter Sisulu University to support and implement the change. Key concerns of employees included dissatisfaction with the inadequate and inappropriate communication strategies, uncertainty about the suitability of the changed PQM, doubt regarding leadership support for change, as well as the perceived risk of the change. However, the main enablers were the comprehension by WSU employees of the need for a new PQM to address the poor alignment with university vision and HEQSF requirements, an appreciation of the lack of social relevance of the programmes, and confidence that they have the requisite skills and qualifications. The perceived benefits for the institution provided the needed spur for embracing the new PQM.

In different areas of the OR Tambo, Ukhahlamba and Alfred Nzo District Municipalities, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa it has been long-established that native plants are the main components of traditional health care systems. The study aimed at identifying and documenting plants frequently used for the treatment of gastro-intestinal disorders (diarrhoea and stomach ache), evaluating their efficacy and isolation of active compounds in the crude extracts. Ethnobotanical information of the commonly used plants was collected and documented through the use of questionnaires with traditional healers, herbalists and community members. In the study area, the ethnobotanical data revealed that 51 plant species belonging to 36 families were used in treating diarrhoea and stomach ache. According to the ethnobotanical information, Acacia mearnsii (idywabasi) was the most frequently used plant for treating diarrhoea and was selected for further studies because of its frequent use in most sites within the study area. Four extracts (hexane, ethyl acetate, dichloromethane and methanol) from the bark of Acacia mearnsii were screened against five Gram-positive bacteria strains (Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Bacillus cereus, Micrococcus kristinae and Streptococcus faecalis.) and five Gram-negative bacteria strains (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Shigella flexneri, Klebsiella pneumonia and Serratia marcescens). The antibacterial activities were determined by minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) and bio-autographic methods. The extracts showed various degrees of activity. Ethyl acetate extract showed higher activity against bacterial species used during the antibacterial assay and was further investigated for isolation of active compounds. Bio-autography results showed one compound separated on the TLC with activity against the test organisms Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Bacillus cereus. In the future, this study may serve as a foundation for choosing the common, active medicinal plants to use in traditional medicine practices.

The challenge has changed our day‑to‑day lives, including the way we interact and conduct business. In the midst of this, WSU has had to change the way learning and teaching occurs. Traditional face‑to‑face tuition had to be adapted by moving to the online mode of teaching and learning to both minimise the time lost in the academic project and protect staff and students from the devastating effects of the virus. This article reflects the actions taken by the University and describes its pilot‑project approach to online learning and those processes it has put in place to ensure its effective implementation. While it is accepted that switching to an online mode of teaching and learning can facilitate flexibility in space and time, the reality is that the majority of students at WSU – mainly due to their geographical and socio‑economic environments – experience daily challenges ranging from poor network coverage, lack of internet connectivity, lack of electricity and other socio‑economic impediments that make online learning stressful or beyond their reach. In this article, we present a model that could be used by higher education institutions (HEIs) to respond to Covid‑19 in the short term. The proposed model is underpinned by a framework that caters for students who are readily able to access online learning, students with intermittent access to online facilities and finally, students who cannot access online education. First, we provide a brief description of online learning, highlighting the challenges presented to teaching and learning by this approach. We argue that our context and education policies present additional problems that militate against the adoption of online strategies by most HEIs. In the final instance, we present a framework that is better suited to our context and can be used during and after the lockdown. Data were collected using online questionnaires with both structured and open‑ended questions from both lecturers and students to determine their experiences with the testing project. Lastly, we draw conclusions based on the findings of the study.

A Facile Effective Method for the Synthesis of Au-Cdse Nanostructures and their Characterisations.

- Description: ABSTRACT We report the synthesis of aqueous and organically soluble cadmium selenide (CdSe) nanoparticles (NPs) doped with gold via a facile and effective method. Briefly the synthesis involves the reduction of selenium powder using sodium sulphite to produce sodium selenosulphate which acts as the selenium source, followed by the addition of CdX (X = Cl2, CH3COO, NO3). The nanoparticles were passivated with trisodium citrate, mercaptopropanoic acid (MPA), potassium sodium tartarate (PST) and L-cysteine which rendered them soluble in water and also acted as stabilizing agents, while passivation with hexadecylamine (HDA) made them soluble in organic solvent which also enhanced their stability. The high quality of the as-synthesized nanoparticles was confirmed using absorption and photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high resolution TEM (HRTEM). The systematic study of the effect of mole ratio, temperature, capping agent, growth time, cadmium precursor and ratio of Au on the size, optical and structural properties on the water soluble CdSe nanoparticles were investigated. All the as-synthesised particles, are blue-shifted in relation to the bulk band gap of CdSe. As the Cd: Se mole ratio increases, the intensity of the citrate capped CdSe materials also increases and the particle sizes are in the range of 2.06 – 4.00 nm. When the temperature was increased, the luminescence intensity quenched whereas the particle size increased. As the growth time increased, the intensity increased and then decreased again towards the end of the reaction. When different capping agents were used the particle sizes range from 2.06 – 3.36 nm for citrate, 2.08 – 3.33 nm for MPA, 2.01 – 2.28 nm for L-cysteine and polydispersed for PST. The luminescence intensity decreased in the order citrate > cysteine > PST > MPA when CdCl2 was used as cadmium precursor. When different cadmium precursors were used for L-cysteine, the particle sizes range from 2.06 – 2.31 nm for Cd(CH3COO)2 and 2.00 – 2.37 nm for Cd(NO3)2 while the intensity increased as the reaction time increased, however, still lower than the CdCl2 materials. The effect of Au ratio showed that the intensity of Au-doped cysteine capped-CdSe increased as the Au ratio decreased.
