Design of an LMS-mediated tutorial to support deep and effective engagement in the process of learning mathematics

- Description: Many institutions of Higher Learning have adopted a variety of Learning Management Systems (LMS) as platforms for e-learning implementation. However, the design and nature of LMS technologies present challenges to the design of LMS-based activities that engage students in learning to do mathematics. There are no clear guidelines or strategies for designing LMS-based activities that engage students in complex mathematical processes. Hence, using technologies in mathematics education often replicates instructivist positions and practices. Conversely, using constructivist principles, modes of mathematical engagement, and e-learning tools to mediate learning provides an integrated framework to transform the use of an LMS as a platform for e-learning implementation and promote deep engagement in mathematical learning. The objective of this study was to explore mechanisms that could be useful for conceiving activities to support the learning of Mathematics using an LMS-mediated tutorial. The design, redesign and evaluation of the e-tutorial are reported upon. In preparation for the study, an LMS-based tutorial was designed and developed to be used as a test-bed to investigate how these e-learning tools could support learning to do mathematics. A Trigonometry module, consisting of course content in the form of resources and tasks to help the students to explore, practice and apply right triangle concepts, was used to investigate and derive design strategies. A mixed method research approach with a reflexive self-study research design was used. A group of first-year university student volunteers studying mathematics in the mechanical engineering department were used to test the tutorial. The students were asked to do a series of tasks using the e-learning environment during the Mathematics tutorial period. Data was collected using in-class observations, interviews, screen capture videos, student-written responses, and system-generated data. All students were encouraged to complete a learning journal detailing their experiences during the tutorial using an LMS-based tool. The students were given no training, but a tutor (researcher) was available to answer any questions they may have had. Contradiction analysis was used to evaluate the data, compare purpose and practice and judge whether the activity or tool was fitted for the intended purpose. Findings were in the form of transformations of the e-tutorial system as it was developed. Among the most noteworthy contributory modifications were changing from 1) “read first, then do” to “do first, read when necessary”, 2) “work on the computer” to “work on paper then capture on the computer”, 3) “physically separated work with computer-enabled social contact”, to "individual computer work in face-to-face social settings.” 4) “single-level of resource provision” to “multi-level, demand-driven resource provision” and 5) “self-regulated” learning process regulation to “computer-assisted” learning process regulation. The discussion of these findings indicated that to enable students’ deep and effective engagement in the process of learning fundamental trigonometry within an LMS-mediated tutorial, one needs to design the system with some activities that can create a demand for knowledge, encourage rough work and face-to-face social interaction, supported by multi-level, demand-driven resources, and computer-assisted learning-process regulation. - Description: There is a dearth of research on how the design and curriculum of a Master of Education (MEd) qualification for university-based teacher educators of prospective secondary school teachers may or may not contribute to the problem of poor secondary school learning outcomes in Tanzania. This qualitative study analyses the establishment, conceptualisation, design and curriculum components of selected MEd programmes with the purpose of identifying and explaining the conditions enabling and/or constraining the development of quality teacher educators. The research used a case study design to investigate how and why particular knowledge is privileged in two MEd programmes at two Tanzanian universities with a view to probing the relevance of the knowledge to teacher educators professional roles and practices. The study used critical realism as an under-labourer to investigate power structures and the generative and causal mechanisms underlying the two MEd programmes. The study draws on aspects of Bernstein’s theory as analytical tools to explain what emerges from the data. The data was collected from interviews, document analysis and observation, and analysed using thematic analysis, abductive and retroductive modes of inference. The research revealed and explains how underlying structural and agential mechanisms have shaped the establishment, conceptualisation and curriculum design of the two MEd programmes. The findings revealed a strong relationship between constraints, including the lack of appropriate MEd design team and the inadequacy of resources and facilities, and the quality of MEd graduates. Such constrains are possible mechanisms associated with the agential actions of the top administrators affect the relevance and appropriateness of the MEd curriculum components, the effective lecturers transmission and students acquisition of knowledge and skills. The research also explored how underlying mechanisms shaped the selection of course content and the privileging of certain types of teacher knowledge. These mechanisms include programme entry qualification, curriculum arrangement of core and elective courses, the lack of awareness of the knowledge and skills requisite for teacher educators’ specialisation, and the absence of recontextualisation principles to guide appropriate selection and recontextualisation of the relevant teacher educator’s courses. There is evidence that both MEd programmes have insufficient pedagogical knowledge and lack large components of academic content knowledge of teaching. An emphasis on individual disciplinary education courses with strong boundaries between modules and topics, aimed at developing specific education specialisations, results in teacher educator professional knowledge being less developed. Furthermore the accumulation and repetition of inappropriate knowledge has resulted in these programmes being weak regions for teacher educators’ professional fields of practice. This has implications for the quality of the secondary school teacher professional development courses on which these MEd graduates teach. It raises questions about the quality of the secondary school teachers being produced, and the extent to which this is contributing to the disappointing performance of Tanzanian schooling. The study generates insights into the mechanisms and conditions constraining the development of quality teacher educators. These conditions include the domination of higher education by customer demand, weak university regulatory systems, and the autonomy of university administration in terms of programme approval and other academic operations. Some administrators and lecturers showed an understanding of what would enable quality teacher educator development in the MEd programme. The findings of the research may help to strengthen and enhance quality assurance in the Master of Education programmes for teacher educators in Tanzania in ways that help develop quality secondary school teachers and improve school learning outcomes.

Investigating a way of teaching transformation geometry in grade 9 applying van Hiele’s theory and Kilpatrick’s model : a case study

- Description: Transformation geometry has been neglected in our schools because teachers are often not proficient enough to teach it, as it was not part of the syllabus during their training. The study investigates effective ways of teaching transformation geometry in grade 9, applying van Hiele’s theory (1986) of geometry teaching and learning and Kilpatrick’s model of mathematical proficiency. The teaching programme activities require consistent use of physical manipulatives by the teacher for effective teaching, learning and understanding of geometric concepts. The type of study is a case study. Data collection tools are: - baseline evaluation, teacher & learner interviews (pre & post programme intervention) and observation (pre & post) during the implementation of the teaching programme. Results were analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. My research findings show some improvement of learner performance after the application of the programme. Baseline evaluation shows that some learners attained below and above 30%. Interviews showed that some learners had problems before the implementation of the programme and some problems were eliminated by the use of the programme activities and learning progression was evident. Learner performance showed that learners had acquired some knowledge and critical thinking and reasoning skills, reflection skills, communication through LOLT improved, commitment to activities of the programme and teaching practice had improved. Learner performance showed that a learner can be in two different levels at the same time. Consistent use of manipulatives resulted in effective teaching and learning of geometry in grade 9. The results of this research support other researchers’ views of teaching geometry using van Hiele’s theory (1986) and Kilpatrick et al. (2001). Shaw (2002) argues that teaching geometry with manipulatives enhances conceptual understanding by the learner. In my opinion, it also promotes immediate intervention by the teacher as soon as the learner picks an incorrect object. The project enhanced and improved levels of communication between the learner, teacher and others in the classroom.
