- Description: From Resumé: The general picture of the physiology of invertebrate neuro-muscular systems as contrasted with the classical vertebrate system is presented and it is clear that one of the groups least investigated is the Phylum Platyhelminthes. An examination of the properties of the myo-neural system of a platyhelminth should be of interest, not only in itself, but also because of a possible relationship with the coelenterates, whose neuro-muscular system has been fairly extensively investigated. The aim of the present work was to determine some of the properties of the myo-neural system of a platyhelminth, and more especially those which would make possible a comparison with the myo-neural systems of other invertebrate phyla, and most particularly with the coelenterates. A preparation consisting of an entire decerebrate animal was used. The general anatomy of the musculature and basic plan of the nervous system are presented to facilitate an understanding of the experiments described, but a detailed examination of the relationships of nerves and muscles or of the innervation of the latter was not attempted. The spontaneous activity of such preparations was recorded kymographically and the characteristics of this activity under 'normal' conditions are described, together with observations on the effects on the normal spontaneous activity of treatments with sea waters of different ionic composition and with a number of drugs. The responses of the preparation to controlled electrical stimulation are also reported. The results are analysed and compared with the results of similar investigations on other invertebrate preparations, in particular the Anthozoa, and an interpretation of these results in terms of platyhelminth-coelenterate relations is discussed.

Insecticide resistance in the blue tick, Boophilus Decoloratus Koch, in South Africa

- Description: The work described in this dissertation was undertaken in an attempt to obtain a better understanding of the causes and relationships of insecticide resistance in Blue Tick, Boophilus decoloratus Koch, which has become an acute problem in some localities of the country. The work was undertaken at the Research Department of African Explosives and Chemical Industries Limited over a period of six years from 1953 to 1958. An attempt has been made to keep up to date with the published literature on the various aspects of these investigations up until the end of 1958. Information gained from the literature subsequent to end of 1958 has been made use of but it has not been possible for a number of reasons to follow all recent developments in the various aspects of insecticide resistance published during 1959. In the execution of this work assistance has been obtained from colleagues better equipped in the field of organic chemistry, biochemistry and statistics, than the author. Where information so gained has been used it has been duly acknowledged. Considerable assistance was rendered by laboratory assistants who were responsible for performing the considerable amount of routine collection, breeding and testing of the biological material. The blue tick is not a convenient experimental organism for studies on insecticide resistance. Even with the best facilities the tick cannot be bred satisfactorily and in consequence all supplies had to be collected from naturally-occurring populations. Although this had decided advantages in some aspects of the work, a great deal of useful information might have been obtained if certain strains of ticks could have been maintained. The lack of a standard sensitive reference strain has been a considerable disadvantage which could not be overcome and which has influenced the manner in which this work has been carried out. Because the tick could not be bred artificially the work could only be undertaken with unfed larvae and fully engorged adult females . Larvae are extremely small and in consequence could only be handled in batches while the fully engorged female is sluggish and contains a large quantity of semi-digested mammalian blood which invariably interfered with chemical or biochemical studies.

A study of the predators and parasites of Planococcus citri (Risso) (Homoptera) on vines in the Western Cape Province, South Africa

- Description: [Introduction] In the Western Cape Province the mealybug, Planococcus citri (Risso), was first reported on vines in 1930 by Joubert (1943a). By 1935 this mealybug had spread to the Hex River Valley, and subsequently to all the main table grape producing areas of the Western Cape Province. At present Pl. citri is the most important insect pest of the table grape industry and can, if not effectively controlled, result in a loss of at least five per cent of the export table grape crop (Kriegler, 1954). Some preliminary work on the natural enemies of Pl. citri on vines was carried out by Stubbings in 1948, but no further work of this nature has been undertaken in this area since then. The fact that the natural enemies can be an effective check to this mealybug on vines in the Western Cape Province has been known for a number of years (Potgieter, 1937; Hattingh, 1943; Joubert, 1943a; Myburgh, 1951). The present work is an attempt to obtain some basic knowlege of the population fluctuations of the insects concerned in this biological control. Surveys undertaken have shown that there is a complex of primary, secondary and possibly tertiary Hynenopterous parasites associated with Pl. citri. The presence of hyperparasites reduces the efficiency of the primary parasitic Hymenoptera. The usefulness of these primary parasites is further reduced as they only occur in effective numbers for a short period of the year. On the other hand, although attacked by some parasites, the numerous coccinellids found preying on Pl. citri are of more importance in reducing the mealybug populations, as they are present on the vines in effective numbers for the greater part of the year.

- Description: [From Introduction] For many years the problem of interrelationships within the Arthropoda and, indeed, the origin of the Phylum itself have been of interest to many zoologists. It was felt, for reasons which will be given later, that one of the studies which might throw some light on this matter is that of the neuromuscular physiology of arachnid appendages. Consequently it was proposed that the work which is reported here should be primarily concerned with this problem. As in so many cases involving live animals, both the experimental subjects and the experimenter gradually managed to change the direction in which work was proceeding and the result is that only a preliminary attack has been made on the original problem, while most of the material submitted here deals either with functional anatomy or with biological-cum-behavioural characteristics of the experimental animal. Thus it was found that to develop experimental preparations for neuro-muscular studies, it was necessary to work out the anatomy of the muscles and nerves of the appendages used; but this it is not enough. For these nerves and muscles are part of a functional complex which operates as a unit and have therefore to be studied in relation to the structures that they move. Considerations at this level, in fact, carried the study to the plane of functional anatomy. Furthermore it was recognised that even the comprehension of a limb as a functional complex cannot be acquired in isolation. All structures have an evolutionary history and in any consideration of functional anatomy this history must be taken into account - even if the consideration requires extension to the problem of the origin of the group immediately under study.
