- Description: Fisheries management regulations for dusky kob Argyrosomus japonicus, an important commercial and recreational fisheries species, have failed and the stock is considered collapsed. It is important to take an ecosystems approach to management which includes understanding the effect of environmental factors on recruitment, abundance and distribution. The distribution of early juveniles (20-150 mm TL) in the wild appears to be restricted to the upper reaches of estuaries at salinities below 5 psu. Food availability could not explain the distribution of early juveniles. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of salinity on the distribution of early juvenile dusky kob (<150 mm TL) by examining physiological responses of juveniles exposed to a range of salinities under laboratory conditions. The hypothesis was that the physiological functioning of early juveniles would be optimised at the reduced salinities which they naturally occur at. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of salinity on: i) plasma osmolality; ii) growth, food conversion ratio and condition factor; and iii) gill histology with emphasis on chloride cell size and number. A preliminary study was undertaken to determine whether the use of 2-phenoxyethanol had an effect on plasma osmolality. Juveniles pithed prior to blood sampling were used as the control. Plasma osmolality was not affected by exposure or duration of exposure (2, 4, 6, 8, 10 min) to 2-phenoxyethanol. The ability of teleosts to regulate plasma osmolality over a wide range of salinities indicates their degree of ‘physiological euryhalinity’. Plasma osmolality of juveniles exposed to 5, 12 and 35 psu was measured every two weeks over a total of six weeks. Although juveniles were able to regulate plasma osmolality over the duration of the experiment, plasma osmolality at 5 and 12 psu was significantly lower than in fish maintained at 35 psu. Growth is used as an indicator of the relative energy used for osmoregulation at different salinities, as the energy used for osmoregulation becomes unavailable for growth. A nineweek growth experiment was conducted on juveniles exposed to 5, 12 and 35 psu. Juveniles grew and survived at all three salinities. However, growth of juveniles at 5 psu was significantly lower than at 12 and 35 psu. Other than a significantly greater weight gain at 35 psu relative to 12 psu, there was no significant difference in specific growth and length gain between juveniles at 12 and 35 psu. Food conversion ratio and condition factor at 12 and 35 psu were not significantly different, but food conversion ratio and condition factor at 5 psu was significantly greater and lower than at 35 psu respectively. In fish, gills are considered the major organ involved in osmoregulation. Within the gills, chloride cells are the predominant site of ion exchange which is driven by the Na⁺, K⁺- ATPase enzyme. Gill samples of juveniles exposed to 5, 12 and 35 psu for six weeks were examined histologically using light microscopy. Chloride cells of juveniles maintained at 5 psu were significantly more abundant than in juveniles at 12 and 35 psu. Chloride cells of juveniles at 5 psu were significantly larger than in juveniles kept at 12 psu, but not significantly different to those of juveniles kept at 35 psu. The ability of the juvenile fish to regulate plasma osmolality indicates that they are 'physiologically euryhaline', but the reduced growth and proliferation of chloride cells at 5 psu suggests that energy expenditure for osmoregulation is increased at hypoosmotic salinities. Salinity induced physiological responses could therefore not explain the natural distribution of early juvenile dusky kob and it is proposed that other environmental factors (e.g. temperature) are also important. It is also hypothesised that the high conductivity of an estuary in South Africa, to which our understanding is limited, may negate the effect of reduced salinity. Although freshwater input into estuaries is an important factor, further investigations to explain the distribution and abundance of early juveniles is required to make management recommendations. Dusky kob is also becoming an increasingly popular aquaculture species in South Africa. In this regard, early juvenile dusky kob can be grown at salinities as low as 12 psu without negatively affecting growth and production.

- Description: The overall aim of this study was to gain a better understanding of the feeding mechanisms of the larvae and early juveniles of the sole, Dagetichthys marginatus (Soleidae), with which to assess the suitability of current feeding protocols and to facilitate the development of an appropriate pelleted feed. This was achieved by examining the ontogeny of the cranium of laboratory reared sole, with particular emphasis on those elements associated with feeding and by comparing the cranium of juvenile fish with that of adult fish. At 4 dah (days after hatch) Dagetichthys marginatus larvae develop the first rudimentary branchial arches that facilitates the capture and ingestion of food items. Subsequent development of cranial structures, such as the oral jaws, suspensorium, neurocranium, hyoid and branchial arches and the opercular apparatus enables the larvae, at 16 dah, to switch from ram feeding to suction feeding on live prey. The use of live Artemia nauplii from 4 to 16 dah is therefore appropriate. The first morphological asymmetries developed at 16 dah in the dentaries and at 22 dah the maxillae and the premaxillae began to show asymmetries. Teeth were present only on the blind side of the oral jaw elements and during this period (16 to 22 dah) the existing elements began to ossify. From 16 to 35 dah the standard feeding protocol consists of a combination of pelagic (Artemia metanauplii) and benthic prey (dead, frozen Artemia nauplii) and from 25 dah onwards a sinking pellet is provided. The time (dah) at which frozen Artemia and sinking pellets were provided, appropriately corresponded to the initiation of benthic feeding behaviour. However at this stage the use of pelagic Artemia metanauplii is inappropriate and unnecessary. At 31 dah the cranial morphology resembled that of adult fish. Adult D. marginatus display extreme asymmetries among the elements of the oral jaws, the suspensorium and certain elements of the neurocranium. Elements on the blind side are larger and more robust than those on the ocular side and are adapted for feeding, while those on the ocular side appear to have a respiratory function. From 31 dah the cranial elements are identical to those of adult fish, suggesting that no further feeding behavioural changes occurred and that a sinking pellet, of which the nutrient composition meets the requirements of the fish, would be appropriate for ongrowing.

By estimating the degree of the metabolic response under given salinity levels and sudden changes thereof, it could be tested whether growth under given culture conditions could be predicted. Using intermittent respirometers, this study investigated the metabolic response of juvenile Lithognathus lithognathus following gradual acclimation to 5, 25 and 35‰ and, as a result of abrupt change from 35‰ to 5‰ or from 35‰ to 25‰ at 20˚C. The main aim of the study was to establish whether the magnitude of such responses could be used to predict growth of juvenile L. lithognathus under culture conditions. Hence, in addition to the respirometry study, two growth studies were conducted at 5, 10, 25 and 35‰ salinities. The baseline metabolic rates of juvenile L. lithognathus were also determined. Oxygen consumption measurements over 24-hours showed that most fish exhibited a diurnal peak in metabolic rates. The standard and active metabolic rates calculated from juvenile L. lithognathus with a diurnal peak in oxygen consumption were 0.06±0.001mgO₂g⁻¹h⁻¹ (mean±SEM, n = 5), and 0.11±0.01mg O₂g⁻¹h⁻¹, respectively. The standard and active metabolic rates of juvenile L lithognathus showing a nocturnal peak in metabolic activities were 0.04±0.001mgO₂g-1h-1 (n = 1), and 0.12±0.003 mg O₂g⁻¹ h⁻¹, respectively. Routine metabolic rate of these fish calculated over a 3-h measurement period was 0.09±0.005mgO₂g⁻¹h⁻¹ (n = 6). Juvenile L. lithognathus showed a relationship between metabolic rate (mo₂) and body weight (W) following the equation: mo₂ = 0.62 W⁻°·⁵³.

An assessment of the shore baitfishery in the Eastern Cape

- Description: The collection of bait organisms goes hand-in-hand with shore-angling in South Africa, hence the level of bait-collection can be used as an indicator of fishing effort and vice versa. This emphasises the importance of understanding the fisheries for bait organisms. In 1998 the South African fisheries policy was revised, culminating in the Marine Living Resources Act No. 18 (1998) which supported sustainable development, equitable access to resources and stability of the industry. The policy also dealt with the needs of subsistence fishers who had previously been all but ignored. This study looks to continue in this direction by investigating the opportunities for the establishment and management implications of small-scale commercial baitfisheries in the Eastern Cape. Data were collected from eight clearly demarcated sampling areas using the roving survey method. A total of 97 survey trips were undertaken between September 2001 and April 2003 and 469 interviews were conducted on individual anglers. The data was analysed and discussed on the basis of three wider study regions and this allowed for a more accurate and focussed assessment of the fishery area and the potential for its formalisation. Recreational fishers (91.5%) dominated in each of the three regions surveyed. The low number of subsistence fishers encountered in this study is not a standard pattern throughout South Africa. The dominance of local residents in the shore-fishery could have an important impact on the success of a formalised baitfishery in that the greater proportion of the potential market is accessible throughout the year. Most recreational shore-anglers were middle-aged (43.8 years ± 12.9 years), and hence at the peak of their earning years and this may contribute towards the potential success of a small-scale commercial baitfishery. Most anglers and baitfishers were of the opinion that all South Africans owned and were responsible for managing the living marine resources. The vast majority of recreational users paid for and were in possession of valid permits and approved of the baitfishery regulations. This implies that the greater majority of users recognise that the state is the rightful custodian of the resource and is responsible for management. No subsistence users were in possession of permits. Resource users in the Gamtoos to Tsitsikamma National Park region, where the inspection rate was highest, had the best knowledge of the regulations regarding both baitfishing (67.2% ± 38.8%) and angling (79.8 ± 21.4%). This substantiates the hypothesis that there is a direct correlation between knowledge of the regulations and the rate of inspection. About 475 000 angler-days/year were fished in the study area, with the highest number of angler-days recorded in or near urban and peri-urban areas. Bronze bream (65.9%) and dusky kob (61.1%) were the two most commonly targeted species, followed by white steenbras (31.7%), white musselcracker (31.4%) and blacktail (20.2%). A total of four purchased and 19 collected bait species was recorded during the study. Sardine, chokka and pink prawn were the most frequently encountered purchased bait. Red bait, sand prawn, mullet, siffie, sand mussel, bloodworm and saddleback were the most frequently encountered collected bait species. Sand prawn was identified as the preferred bait species for a wide range of angling species. The total quantity of bait organisms used per fishing trip was markedly less than the total amount collected per trip. The ban of off-road vehicles (ORV's) from beaches (20 January 2002) resulted in spatial shifts in angler effort in certain areas, suggesting that total effort has reduced in areas where ORV's were commonly used. Subsequent to the ban, fishers were encountered, on average, much closer to access points. The value of small-scale baitfisheries within the total study area was estimated at about R7 million per year. Across the entire study area red bait was identified as the most valuable bait in the rock-and-surf fishery in monetary terms, while sand prawn was also important. The findings led to the conclusion that small-scale commercial baitfisheries in the study area are potentially viable. Scenarios for the establishment of baitfisheries are suggested and discussed.

Resource users in the Gamtoos to Tsitsikamma National Park region, where the inspection rate was highest, had the best knowledge of the regulations regarding both baitfishing (67.2% ± 38.8%) and angling (79.8 ± 21.4%). This substantiates the hypothesis that there is a direct correlation between knowledge of the regulations and the rate of inspection. About 475 000 angler-days/year were fished in the study area, with the highest number of angler-days recorded in or near urban and peri-urban areas. Bronze bream (65.9%) and dusky kob (61.1%) were the two most commonly targeted species, followed by white steenbras (31.7%), white musselcracker (31.4%) and blacktail (20.2%). A total of four purchased and 19 collected bait species was recorded during the study. Sardine, chokka and pink prawn were the most frequently encountered purchased bait. Red bait, sand prawn, mullet, siffie, sand mussel, bloodworm and saddleback were the most frequently encountered collected bait species. Sand prawn was identified as the preferred bait species for a wide range of angling species. The total quantity of bait organisms used per fishing trip was markedly less than the total amount collected per trip. The ban of off-road vehicles (ORV's) from beaches (20 January 2002) resulted in spatial shifts in angler effort in certain areas, suggesting that total effort has reduced in areas where ORV's were commonly used. Subsequent to the ban, fishers were encountered, on average, much closer to access points. The value of small-scale baitfisheries within the total study area was estimated at about R7 million per year. Across the entire study area red bait was identified as the most valuable bait in the rock-and-surf fishery in monetary terms, while sand prawn was also important. The findings led to the conclusion that small-scale commercial baitfisheries in the study area are potentially viable. Scenarios for the establishment of baitfisheries are suggested and discussed.

Recent mariculture development plans however, supported by government commitment to stimulate coastal development, offers new opportunity for the sector's growth. These new sector development plans require a multi-disciplinary intensive information base with a strong regional and national spatial component. Geographic Information System (GIS) is a spatial analytical tool, which is capable of handling such large coastal databases and analysing them. Nevertheless, many mariculture GIS planning applications, often developed in isolation and with limited practical use for decision makers, highlighted the need to develop GIS in relation to the mariculture sector development plan. Hence, the aim of this study was to develop and evaluate a GIS for the national and regional mariculture sector planning process in South Africa, in order to identify potentially suitable areas along the South African coastline for mariculture operations. The GIS development in this study was based on the mariculture planning approach developed by PAP/RAe (1996), which recognizes the variations of scales in mariculture planning. Three case studies, representing the diversity of the South African sector plan, were selected to develop the GIS. They included: a national suitability analysis for all land-based culture systems, a specific national analysis on abalone ranching, and a detailed regional analysis of land-based culture and abalone ranching along the Namaqualand coastline. The GIS was developed separately for each case study based on a strategy consisting of six main phases, including: identification of project requirements, developing analytical framework, selection and location of data sources, organization and manipulation of data, analysing data and verifying and evaluation of the outputs. Biophysical, coastal use, and infrastructure criteria were collected, sorted and analysed to identify development constraints. Based on a set of conditions, and Boolean logic and arithmetic operations, unsuitable areas were identified and eliminated. Main constraints for national land-based development included competition over space along KwaZuluNatal Province coastline and restricted access to the coast along the south region of the Northern Cape Province, Wild Coast along the Eastern Cape Province, and Maputaland along KwaZulu-Natal Province. Ten areas along the country coastline were therefore identified as potentially suitable for land-based mariculture. Furthermore, South African abalone ranching potential was found to be limited mostly along the Western and Northern Cape Province's coastline due to the high risk of Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) occurrences, alternative resource use and activities such as commercial fishery, poaching, and conservation. Hence, a total of nine areas along the Northern Cape, Western Cape, and Eastern Cape coastlines were identified as premier areas for abalone ranching. The regional study along the Namaqualand coastline revealed potential conflict between mining activity and mariculture development due to security issues and restricted access to the coast. Land-based mariculture development was confined to the four main coastal urban areas. The highest potential for land-based mariculture was along Port Nolloth and Kleinsee coastlines, whereas marine-based (i.e. abalone ranching) potential was poor along the north part of the coast due to intense marine mining activities, restricted access to the coast, and low kelp bed density. High potential abalone ranching areas were identified south to Kleinsee, and around Port Nolloth. Potential conflict with marine mining activity was minimal since it was localised and not related to kelp bed locations. It was concluded that GIS is a relevant and compatible tool for South African mariculture sector planning. However, future development of GIS as integrated planning tool in mariculture and coastal planning, requires updated spatial data (e.g. recreational activity), and continued interaction among project planners, mariculture specialists and GIS analysts.

- Description: In aquaculture, a thorough knowledge of the specific environmental requirements of a species is needed in order to maximize growth rate and survival. There is a paucity of data regarding the fundamental environmental requirements for the ongrowing phase of clownfish juveniles. This prompted the design of three experiments to determine the best feeding regimen, temperature and stocking density that maximize growth and survival of Amphiprion percula. Ration size and feeding frequency are important factors for optimizing fish growth during the juvenile grow-out phase. A factorial growth trial was conducted to determine the effect of feeding frequency and ration size on the growth of juvenile clownfish (Amphiprion percula).Three feeding frequencies (1, 2 and 3 times daily) and six rations (2,4,6,8, 10 and 12 % body weight per day (BW.day⁻¹)) were used to test the growth response over a twelve week period. Non-linear regression analysis on the effect of ration, independent of feeding frequency, on growth resulted in a significant (n = 36; r² = 68.7) parabolic model: In y = -0.0302x² + 0.5159x + -4.4377. Maximum growth corresponded to a ration of 8.5% BW.day⁻¹. Survival as a function of ration was significantly lower at 2% BW.day⁻¹. Data were further examined with Analysis of CoVariance (ANCOVA) to determine the effect of ration on growth at each feeding frequency. The combination revealed a maximum growth rate when the fish were fed a ration of 10% BW.day⁻¹ divided into two equal meals. The required ration per meal to maintain maximum growth was also found to decrease as feeding frequency increased. The determination of the best temperature for growth is of great importance due to the direct relationship between fish metabolism and temperature. The thermal preferendum of A. percula has already been estimated at 26 ± 0.7°C but it is not known whether this closely approximates the temperature for maximum growth. Sixteen tanks were set to different temperatures ranging between 21.5 and 30.2 °C. Ten juvenile A. percula were placed in each tank and growth was measured fortnightly over the course of the 10 week experiment. Non-linear regression analysis resulted in significant models for fish length (y = -0.0005x² + 0.00267x - 0.0338; r² = 56.7, n = 11) and weight (y= -0.00016x² + 0.0084x - 0.1073; r² = 61.6, n = 11). These models predict that maximum growth would be at 27.7 and 27.1 °C for length and weight, respectively. Temperature, over the range tested, had no apparent effect on survival. There was no significant difference between the temperatures for maximum growth and the preferred temperature. The effect of stocking densities ranging from 0.2 fish.L¹ to 4.0 fish.L⁻¹ on growth were used in the third experiment. The fish were fed to satiation twice daily and growth was measured fortnightly throughout the 8 week experiment. - Description: The construction of the Katse dam was completed in 1996. The dam started filling in 1995 and reached full capacity in early 1998. It forms part of Phase 1A of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP). The main aim of the project is to provide revenue to Lesotho, by transferring water from the catchment of the Senqu (Orange) River in Lesotho to South Africa’s major industrial and population centres. During the implementation of the project, an estimated 130 people were displaced. However, the most serious impact has been the loss of the traditional way of life in the form of arable and grazing land as a consequence of inundation. One of the obligations of the project is to ensure that the standard of living of those affected by the project is not impaired. The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority identified a number of rural development projects, which included fisheries development. This study is an integral part of fisheries development in Lesotho. The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of the biology and the demographics of the fish species in the lake. This information would serve as the basis for the development of a management plan for the sustainable utilisation of the fisheries resources. To achieve this aim, the following specific objectives were addressed: 1. Investigation of the biology of the three principal species. 2. Description of the key population parameters (growth, mortality & recruitment). 3. Investigation of the distribution and relative abundance of the three species. The three principal species in the Katse dam are rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and the two cyprinids, Barbus aeneus and Labeo capensis. Sectioned otoliths were used to age O. mykiss while both otoliths and scales were used to age B. aeneus and L. capensis. Marginal zone analysis revealed that slow growth was experienced in winter for the three species. The maximum-recorded age for both B. aeneus and L. capensis was 12 years while O. mykiss reached 4 years. There was no significant difference in growth rates of the different sexes and growth was best described by the 3 parameter Von-Bertalanfy growth model as Lt = 603[1-e⁻°·¹⁵⁽t ⁺ °·°³⁾] for B. aeneus, Lt = 526[1-e⁻°·²¹⁽t ⁺ °·⁹⁾] for O. mykiss and Lt = 521[1-e⁻°·¹⁷⁽t ⁺ °·²¹⁾] for L.capensis. Male and female O. mykiss attained 50% sexual maturity (Lm₅₀) at 235 and 275mm FL, respectively. There was no difference in Lm₅₀ for male and female B. aeneus and L. capensis. B. aeneus reached sexual maturity at 285mm FL while L. capensis reached sexual maturity at 244mm. Both cyprinid species spawned in summer (November to January) while O. mykiss spawned in winter (May to August). The mean total mortality rate (Z) estimated from catch curves and Butterworth et al (1989) equation was 0.72 yr⁻¹ for B. aeneus, 0.62 yr⁻¹ for L. capensis and 1.32 yr⁻¹ for O. mykiss. The estimate of natural mortality was 0.41 yr⁻¹ for both B. aeneus and L. capensis and 0.81yr⁻¹ for O. mykiss.

- Description: The construction of the Katse dam was completed in 1996. The dam started filling in 1995 and reached full capacity in early 1998. It forms part of Phase 1A of the Lesotho Highlands Water Project (LHWP). The main aim of the project is to provide revenue to Lesotho, by transferring water from the catchment of the Senqu (Orange) River in Lesotho to South Africa’s major industrial and population centres. During the implementation of the project, an estimated 130 people were displaced. However, the most serious impact has been the loss of the traditional way of life in the form of arable and grazing land as a consequence of inundation. One of the obligations of the project is to ensure that the standard of living of those affected by the project is not impaired. The Lesotho Highlands Development Authority identified a number of rural development projects, which included fisheries development. This study is an integral part of fisheries development in Lesotho. The aim of this study was to gain an understanding of the biology and the demographics of the fish species in the lake. This information would serve as the basis for the development of a management plan for the sustainable utilisation of the fisheries resources. To achieve this aim, the following specific objectives were addressed: 1. Investigation of the biology of the three principal species. 2. Description of the key population parameters (growth, mortality & recruitment). 3. Investigation of the distribution and relative abundance of the three species. The three principal species in the Katse dam are rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, and the two cyprinids, Barbus aeneus and Labeo capensis. Sectioned otoliths were used to age O. mykiss while both otoliths and scales were used to age B. aeneus and L. capensis. Marginal zone analysis revealed that slow growth was experienced in winter for the three species. The maximum-recorded age for both B. aeneus and L. capensis was 12 years while O. mykiss reached 4 years. There was no significant difference in growth rates of the different sexes and growth was best described by the 3 parameter Von-Bertalanfy growth model as Lt = 603[1-e⁻°·¹⁵⁽t ⁺ °·°³⁾] for B. aeneus, Lt = 526[1-e⁻°·²¹⁽t ⁺ °·⁹⁾] for O. mykiss and Lt = 521[1-e⁻°·¹⁷⁽t ⁺ °·²¹⁾] for L.capensis. Male and female O. mykiss attained 50% sexual maturity (Lm₅₀) at 235 and 275mm FL, respectively. There was no difference in Lm₅₀ for male and female B. aeneus and L. capensis. B. aeneus reached sexual maturity at 285mm FL while L. capensis reached sexual maturity at 244mm. Both cyprinid species spawned in summer (November to January) while O. mykiss spawned in winter (May to August). The mean total mortality rate (Z) estimated from catch curves and Butterworth et al (1989) equation was 0.72 yr⁻¹ for B. aeneus, 0.62 yr⁻¹ for L. capensis and 1.32 yr⁻¹ for O. mykiss. The estimate of natural mortality was 0.41 yr⁻¹ for both B. aeneus and L. capensis and 0.81yr⁻¹ for O. mykiss.

- Description: The aim of this study was to improve the rearing of common clownfish Amphiprion percula, by weaning juveniles from a live feed to a formulated feed as early as possible, while still maintaining good growth and survival. The growth response of A. percula to a formulated dry feed was initially investigated. There was no difference in growth rate of juveniles fed a formulated feed, and the formulated feed supplemented with either Artemia or a Donax serra / Penaeus indicus combination. Amphiprion percula readily consumed the formulated feed, and the fishmeal/casein combination appeared an acceptable protein source. As the amount of protein included in a diet can have a profound effect on growth, the optimal dietary protein level for juvenile A. percula was investigated by feeding semipurified diets containing graded levels of protein, ranging from 40-65%. There was no difference in the growth rates of juveniles fed the various diets, however all diets promoted good growth with an average weight gain of 419%, and thus for the purposes of this study the diet formulation was deemed adequate. The histological study of the digestive system of larval A. percula revealed that the alimentary canal was advanced at hatching and that larvae start exogenous feeding immediately. Three days after hatch (DAH) the yolk sac is completely absorbed. In the hind-gut epithelium of 5-day-old larvae small supranuclear inclusion vacuoles appear, suggesting pinocytotic digestion, and by 7 DAH gastric glands are established in the epithelium of the stomach. Nine DAH supranuclear inclusion vacuoles appear in the epithelium of the mid-gut, indicating extracellular digestion and absorption across the lumen. As pinocytotic digestion of protein is less efficient than extracellular digestion, especially in the case of formulated feeds, it was hypothesised that the digestive system of A. percula could only effectively digest formulated feeds 9 DAH onwards. The two weaning experiments designed to test this hypothesis revealed that A. percula was able to utilise the formulated feed, without reduction in survival, from 7 DAH onwards. However, in terms of growth, the optimal time to wean juveniles from the live feed to the formulated dry feed was between 15 to 20 DAH. As A. percula accept a formulated feed and can benefit nutritionally from it, the dependence of larvae and juveniles on live feed can be reduced. This study has shown that the rearing of A. percula can been simplified and improved by weaning from 7 DAH with no reduction in survival, and from 15 to 20 DAH with no reduction in growth.

An assessment of the South African east coast linefishery from Kei Mouth to Stil Bay

- Description: During the period April 1994 and February 1996 as part of an investigation into the national Iinefishery, the east coast shore fishery and the recreational and commercial ski-boat fisheries were surveyed, at eight sites between Kei Mouth in the East and Stil Bay in the West. Roving creel, access point and aerial surveys were used. A questionnaire was developed for each sector to gather data on catch and effort, fisher demographics, economics, fisher attitudes towards, and knowledge of, the current management regulations and assess the efficacy of the fisheries inspectorate. During the access point survey the catch of 3273 fishers was inspected and 1556 interviews were conducted. Questionnaires were conducted on 118 recreational ski-boaters and the catch of 165 boats was inspected. 96 commercial skippers were interviewed and 230 had their catch inspected. Three aerial surveys of the entire area were conducted during which a total of 1067 shore fishers were counted giving a shore fisher density of 0.39 fishers.km⁻¹. The majority (99%) of participants in all sectors of the linefishery were male. The greatest number of participants were white, shore fishery 77% recreational ski-boat 98% commercial skiboat 89%, followed by coloured, asian and black people. To a large extent this reflects the income of various racial groups. Most fishers supported the current linefish management plan. However, when tested on their knowledge of the size limits, bag limits and closed seasons of their target species many shore fishers (59%) did not know them and a high proportion of fishers in all sectors had disobeyed at least one of the regulations (shore 50%, recreational ski-boat 70%, commercial ski-boat 56%). When compared to historical data the present catch per unit effort (CPUE) in all sectors has decreased. Most interviewees in the various sectors did not accept responsibility for the decline in CPUE, but attributed it to three principal reasons vis their perceived direct competitors, trawling and pollution. Analysis of the catch revealed that all sectors were multispecies fisheries, with each sector being characterised by a small number of target species. Catch composition differed significantly between the shore and ski-boat sectors, but there was significant overlap between the two skiboat sectors. Analysis of the catch in comparison to that reported to the National Marine Linefish System (NMLS) revealed that there was a substantial degree of under-reporting. There was little seasonal difference in effort in the shore fishery while the recreational ski-boat effort was highest in the summer and the commercial ski-boat effort was high in the winter. Effort in the shore and recreational ski-boat fisheries was concentrated over weekends while the commercial ski-boat effort was highest during weekdays. Total effort for the entire area was estimated at 903 186 (±1913) fisher days per annum in the shore fishery, 24 357 (±685) recreational ski-boat fisher days and 64 266 (±1686) commercial ski-boat fisher days. Expenditure and capital investment in the various sectors was calculated, as were earnings of the participants in the commercial ski-boat sector. The linefishery in the Eastern Cape was estimated to have a minimum capital investment in excess of R210 million and more than R32 million is spent annually on running costs. The commercial ski-boat fishery directly employed an estimated 3184 people. The economic implications of changes in CPUE for the commercial ski-boat fishery are considered, as are the benefits of a recreational angling licence. Management of the linefishery is discussed in relation to the findings of this study.

Aspects of the ecology and reproductive biology of three cichlid fish species of Southern Lake Malombe (Malawi)

- Description: The three major species Lethrinops ''pinkhead'', Otopharynx argyrosoma "red" and Copadichromis. cf virginalis which used to dominate the catches (by weight) of Lake Malombe in the past decade were investigated. In order to make rational recommendations regarding size and boundary of the existing sanctuary area (lightly fished), distribution and abundance, population structure and reproductive biology of the three species were related to habitat types of the southern part of the lake (south western side and south eastern side). Analysis of catch composition showed that species richness was higher in the south eastern side than in the south western side of the lake. Rare species such as Labeo mesops and Opsaridium microiepis were observed in the south eastern side and there was visual absence of such species in the south western side of the lake. The overall fish abundance was significantly greater in the south eastern side than in the south western side of the lake. In the south eastern side, the catch per unit effort (CPUE) was twice that of the south western side (P< 0.05). Seasonal fluctuations in CPUE were also prominent, with the highest peak occurring during September-October period. However, there was an indication of weak relationship among CPUE, phytoplankton biomass, temperature and water depth. The length-weight relationships revealed that growth of the three species closely followed the cubic law for isometric growth in both sides of the lake. Differences in regression coefficients between sides were not significant (ttest, P>0.05). The length-frequency distribution analysis revealed that the three species had the same growth rate regardless of habitat type. However, females grew faster than males. An investigation of reproductive biology showed that the three species have low fecundity and they are asynchronous spawners, with a breeding peak during August and September period. Furthermore, the length-fecundity relationships for L. ''pinkhead'', and 0. argyrosoma "red" indicated that fecundity was more closely related to length in the south eastern side than in the south western side. Based on the above characteristics of L. ''pinkhead'', 0. argyrosoma "red" and C. cf virginalis, and the substrate types, it was strongly suggested that the existing sanctuary (lightly fished) in the south eastern side of the lake could immediately be enlarged to conserve the fish stocks, favourable substratum and aquatic animals that may be of tourists concern.

Biology and management of the Cape gurnard, Chelidonichthys capensis (Order Scorpaeniformes, Family Triglidae) in South Africa

- Description: The South African demersal trawl fishery, as with most trawl-directed fisheries worldwide, has a substantial bycatch component. With increasing commercial emphasis being placed on retained bycatch, an urgent need has arisen to investigate these species. In the past the bycatch component has received little research or management attention. Members of the gurnard family Triglidae make up up to 2.4 % of the South African hake-directed demersal catch and are thus considered an important bycatch species. The catch history and biology, including population structure, reproduction, feeding, age, growth and mortality, of the Cape gurnard, Chelidonichthys capensis, sampled from the Agulhas Bank, South Africa, were thus investigated. Males (mean TL = 366mm) were significantly smaller than females (mean TL = 411mm). The sex ratio was close to parity, males being more dominant in commercial trawls and less dominant in research trawls. Gonad maturation and gonadosomatic indices showed this species to have an extended spawning period with peaks in reproductive activity during September, January and April. First approximations of size at 50 % maturity were similar for females (349mm TL) and males (348mm TL) but differed significantly in terms of age (3.6 years and 4.6 years respectively). Otolith growth marks were validated as annuli using marginal zone analysis. The maximum age estimated was 16 years for a female of 675mm TL and recruitment to the commercial fishery was estimated as taking place in the fifth year of growth for both males and females. Gut content analysis showed C. capensis to be an opportunistic feeder preying preferentially on the benthic crustaceans Goneplax angulata and Mursia cristimanus. Landings from the commercial linefishery were insignificant whilst those for the commercial trawl fishery ranged from 500 tonnes to 3250 tonnes between 1984 to 1995, and indicated that this species forms an important component of the South African trawl fishery bycatch. A first approximation of fishing mortality (0.36 year⁻¹) for the inshore commercial trawl fishery was higher than that of natural mortality (0.25 year⁻¹) suggesting some fishing pressure on this species on the Agulhas Bank. However this fishing mortality value was significantly less than that for F₀·₁ (4.78 year⁻¹) that was estimated using a yield-per-recruit model.

- Description: The objectives of the study were to determine whether or not behaviour could be used to predict spawning in Amphiprion akallopisos, and to document the behaviour of this species under various environmental conditions in captivity. The spawning behaviour of A. akallopisos was studied and quantified. Three behaviour patterns - belly touching, nest cleaning by the female and mutual nest cleaning (by the male and the female) were identified as predictors for spawning. The reproductive behaviour of A.akallopisos under three photoperiods was investigated. The photoperiods were: 14L:10D, 10hr15minL:13hr45minD and a natural photoperiod cycle condensed into three months. A. akallopisos maintained under 14 L:10D exhibited a significantly higher frequency and duration of chasing, nest cleaning and total interaction compared to fish kept under 10hr15minL:13hr45minD. A photoperiod of 14L:10D was selected for further studies. As manipulation of photoperiod did not induce spawning, GnRHa was administered to the fish in the diet at levels of 10, 20, 40 and 80 μg/kg BW. Control groups were fed untreated food. None of the dosages were successful in inducing spawning, or spawning behaviour in A. akallopisos. It is possible that the method of hormone application was not suitable for this species. It is also possible that behaviour may regulate blood hormone levels as opposed to endocrine status influencing behaviour. In the third trial, A. akallopisos was maintained with, and without sea anemones in order to determine whether or not anemone hosts are necessary for spawning. The presence of anemones did not induce spawning and A. akallopisos kept without anemones exhibited significantly more interactive behaviour than fish kept with hosts. Spawning of A. akallopisos at a later date without anemones suggests that anemones are not necessary for spawning in A. akallopisos. Light intensity was investigated as a cue for spawning. The reproductive behaviour of A. akallopisos was then studied under light intensities of 4.16 x 10¹⁵ quanta.sec⁻¹.cm⁻², 8.85 x 10¹⁵ quanta.sec⁻¹.cm⁻² and this intensity plus natural light. Spawning occurred mainly under 8.85 x 10¹⁵ quanta.sec⁻¹.cm⁻². Fish maintained under this light intensity exhibited significantly more of nest cleaning behaviour in terms of frequency and duration than fish maintained under low light intensity. A minimum light intensity of 8.85 x 10¹⁵ quanta. sec⁻¹.cm⁻² is recommended for conditioning of this species. This study can be of practical relevance to hatchery managers who can use the methods developed and record predictors for spawning in A. akallopisos and other Amphiprion species. In this way imminence of spawning may be estimated. Most importantly, the study also has academic merit as little work has been undertaken in this field. Although the observational method used in this study was adequate for the purposes of the investigation, future work of this nature should incorporate other methods of documenting gonadal development such as gonadal staging and GSI in order to obtain more conclusive results.

Millions of cardinal tetras are removed from their natural habitat, the upper tributaries of the Rio Negro in Brazil, each year and exported to North America and Europe where they are abundantly available at low cost. This, combined with the fact that they do not spawn freely in captivity has excluded any incentive to culture this fish on a commercial scale in these areas. However, the demand for cardinal tetras in South Africa is high, but their availability is limited to sporadic imports of wild caught fish which has resulted in an increase in their relative value. Thus, there is an appreciable incentive to investigate methods for inducing this species to reproduce in captivity. Information on methods for inducing spawning would form an integral part of a potential production plan for the culture of this species in South Africa. This study consisted of a number of experiments designed to investigate factors related to the spawning of cardinal tetras in captivity. The first series of experiments investigated the effect of variables such as the water chemistry of the experimental system, the sex ratio of the fish, the effect of conditioning and the effect of different spawning media on spawning success. The second series of experiments tested the effects of various environmental stimuli or hormonal treatments on spawning in cardinal tetras. Environmental stimuli tested included a rise in temperature, a rise in water level and a fresh rain water flush. Hormonal treatments included feeding GnRHa enriched brine shrimps to the fish or the application of hormone injections (hypophysation). Neither environmental stimuli nor brine shrimp enrichment induced cardinals to spawn in a repeatable manner. The same was true for hypophysation, but in this case a low incedence of ovulation of injected females was observed. Oocytes from ovulated and non-ovulated females were examined under a microscope and from this it was determined that cardinal tetras are group synchronous spawners, containing two distinct cohorts of oocytes in the ovary. The effect of a number of environmental stimuli on ovulation rate in cardinal tetras were then tested but did not induce ovulation in any females. A series of three experiments was performed investigating the effect of conditioning the sexes together on ovulation rate and spawning success. Conditioning the sexes together had no effect on spawning success, but a significantly higher ovulation rate was observed in females that vvere conditioned together with males. Male cardinals did not follow this trend and lost condition when conditioned together with females. The next experiment tested if pheromones from red serpae tetras, Hyphessobrycon serpae, could be used to induce ovulation and spawning in cardinal tetras. This was found not to be the case. The final series of experiments tested the effect of Aquaspawn® enriched Artemia on ovulation rates in female cardinal tetras. Aquaspawn® is a water soluble preparation of GnRHa and dopamine. Aquaspawn® enriched Artemia were found to be effective for inducing female cardinal tetras to ovulate. However, the results from this method of enrichment were not entirely reliable and further research is warranted. Finally, a protocol for evaluating spawning in topical, freshwater egg-laying fish was proposed, based on the results from this study. The advantages and disadvantages of such a protocol were discussed.

- Description: The proximate composition of juvenile spotted grunter, Pomadasys commersonnii and their major prey items were analyzed to test the hypothesis that the dietary protein requirements would approximate the composition of the natural diet. The amino acid profile of juvenile P. commersonnii was analyzed to establish the pattern of limiting amino acids for this species. Juvenile P. commersonnii feed primarily on the mysid, Mesopodopsis slabberi, which has a protein content of 58.27±0.04% and a calorific value of 19.2kJ/g. The first-limiting essential amino acid for this fish was found to be lysine and it was predicted that the optimal dietary protein requirement would be between 50 and 60%. The optimal dietary protein inclusion level was investigated by feeding semi-purified diets containing graded levels of protein, ranging from 37-62%. Maximum growth was found to occur at dietary protein levels ranging from 40-51%. The best food conversion ratio was achieved at 56% dietary protein and the best protein efficiency ratio was obtained at a dietary protein inclusion level of 37-40%. The protein to energy ratio was defined by feeding 3 different protein levels at 3 different P:E levels. These semi-purified diets contained 35, 45 or 55% protein and 6, 8 or 12% dietary lipid, resulting in protein to energy ratios ranging from 21.1 to 42.3mg/kJ. The optimal P:E ratio for this species was found to be 26.7mg/kJ. This diet effected a low food conversion ratio (1.72±0.19), a low hepatosomatic index (4.01±0.23) and a high specific growth rate (5.96±0.36). The essential amino acid requirements of juvenile P. commersonnii were investigated. Semi-purified diets were formulated to contain graded levels of crystalline lysine based on the amino acid profile of the whole body and fed to the fish for a period of 60 days. Fish fed the "ideal protein" diet had significantly higher (p<0.05) specific growth rates (2.95±0.18), protein efficiency ratios (0.41±0.05) and significantly lower (p<0.05) food conversion ratios (3.02±0.29). Lysine levels in the whole body increased with increasing levels of supplemented lysine. The dietary requirement of lysine was found to be 4.30% of dietary protein. The crude protein digestibility of six protein sources was investigated. Diets were prepared with 1% chromic oxide as an internal marker. The tested protein sources included low temperature Danish fishmeal, steam dried Chilean fishmeal, blood meal, carcass meal, defatted soyabean meal and Spirulina meal. These potential fishmeal substitutes were selected due to their favourable amino acid profiles, and in particular their high levels of lysine, and their high protein content. Both the animal and the plant protein sources were highly digestible. Digestibility co-efficients ranged from 66.09% for Spirulina meal to 73.38% for low temperature Danish fishmeal. The results have shown that juvenile spotted grunter require a minimum of 40% crude protein in their diet, a P:E ratio of 26.7mg/kJ and a lysine concentration of 4.30% of the dietary protein. Long term growth trials are needed to confirm these results. The hypothesis that the proximate composition of the natural diet, and the proximate composition of the animal under investigation, provides a reliable indication of the animals' nutritional requirements was shown to be valid. - Description: The most significant bottleneck to the development of marine finfish culture is a reliable production of juveniles for growout. This is due to the small size at hatch and delicate nature of the pelagic larvae produced by most commercially desirable species. However, over the last 30 years, improved larviculture techniques have been developed to the extent that many species are being successfully cultured worldwide. These techniques were applied to two endemic species as a preliminary step towards establishing marine finfish aquaculture in South Africa. Adult roman Chtysoblephus laticeps and carpenter Argyrozona argyrozona (Pisces: Sparidae) were caught in the Tsitsikamma National Park. Both species responded to injection with pituitary extract, HCG and LHRHa, and were succesfully stripped up to 48 hours after injection. Fish were stripped twice, the second stripping producing better quality eggs. Chyrysoblephus laticeps also spawned naturally after injection with LHRHa. The fertilised eggs were incubated and the larvae reared in a fully recirculating seawater system. One batch of A. argyrozona and three batches of C. laticeps were reared through metamorphosis on a diet of enriched rotifers and Anemia, and inert foods, following commonly used rearing procedures. Both species followed developmental patterns of other cultured larvae, displaying typical critical stages; high mortalities at first-feeding and cannibalism from 26-30 days after hatch resulted in survival rates ranging from 0.1-0.5%. Growth, survival, size of gape at first-feeding, and ease of weaning onto an inert diet of C. laticeps was comparable to other species being reared for the first time, indicating some potential as a candidate species. The numbers of A. argyrozona larvae reared were insufficient to make comparisons with other studies. The adults also proved to be susceptible to physical damage while in captivity and were, therefore, considered unsuitable for aquaculture. The thesis describes the spawning procedure, the systems developed and the larval rearing process. The critical stages of first-feeding, swim bladder inflation, settlement and cannibalism are discussed and the development of the larvae described. The ontogeny of both species is described in detail. Both species displayed typical sparid developmental patterns, but differed with respect to pigmentation, head spination and morphometrics.

Anaesthesia in abalone, Haliotis midae

- Description: The principle aim of this study was to isolate a chemical for the "safe anaesthesia" of abalone under commercial farming conditions. "Safe anaesthesia" implied that the anaesthetic had no immediate detrimental or long term sublethal effect on the abalone, that it was safe for the farmer, the consumer and the environment. Four chemicals, magnesium sulphate (MgS0₄), ethylenediamine tetra-acetic acid (EDTA), 2-phenoxyethanol and procaine hydrochloride were shown to effectively inhibit the in vitro contraction of isolated tarsal muscle of Haliotis midae. This identified them as potential anaesthetics for abalone. Since abalone, like any other aquaculture species, would be subject to frequent size-sorting during the grow-out period, size related dosage tables were developed for the four chemicals at a temperature of 18⁰C. Dosage tables were also developed for benzocaine and carbon dioxide (C0₂), Three size classes (5-15, 20-50 and 60-90 mm shell length (SL)) of abalone were considered. Only three of the six chemicals, viz. MgS0₄, 2-phenoxyethanol and CO₂, met the criteria of an effective abalone anaesthetic in that they effected rapid and mortality-free anaesthesia. The other three chemicals caused mortalities and were considered to be unsuitable for commercial scale anaesthesia. Temperature related dosage tables were then developed for MgS0₄ and CO₂, MgS0₄ concentrations and CO₂ flow rates for effective anaesthesia in abalone were found to be inversely related to temperature. The three size classes of H. midae were intermittently exposed to MgS0₄ and 2-phenoxyethanol anaesthesia for an eight month period to determine the effect of the anaesthetics on growth rate. Because of an increased resistance to the efficacy of 2-phenoxyethanol and high monthly mortalities it was concluded that this chemical was unsafe and unsuitable for commercial use. MgS0₄, on the other hand, had no effect on growth of abalone and no significant effect on the rate of mortality. MgS0₄ also had no measurable effect on H. midae muscle ultrastructure and, by implication had no effect on flesh texture. The use of MgS0₄ as an anaesthetic would, therefore, not affect marketability. Moreover, no magnesium residues were found in H. midae muscle tissue after short term or intermittent long term exposure to MgS0₄ anaesthesia. It was found that the three size classes of H. midae used in this study could be safely exposed to the recommended MgS0₄ concentrations for up to 40 minutes without any mortalities. This is more than adequate for routine farming procedures. Medium size abalone (20-50 mm SL) were also safely exposed to 14 g.100 ml⁻¹ MgS0₄ for up to 6 hours without any mortalities. The results have shown that MgS0₄ was undoubtedly the best chemical that was evaluated for anaesthesia of H. midae in this study. It fulfils the requirements set forth by the U.S.A. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in that it is safe for the abalone, the farmer, the consumer and the environment.

Aspects of nutrition of the swordtail fish, Xiphophorus Helleri, (Family : Poeciliidae) under intensive culture conditions

- Description: The aim of this work was to investigate the nutrition of a popular ornamental fish, the swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri), under intensive aquaculture conditions. The study focused on the formulation and manufacture of artificial dry diets, as well as the influence of livefeed supplementation on growth and nutritional indices of both juvenile and broodstock fish. A combination of 65% fishmeal and 35% soya oil cake meal was found to closely approximate the essential amino acid profile of X helleri (r² = 94,3%) and lysine was identified as the first limiting amino acid. The influence of dietary protein and energy on the growth of X helleri was investigated by means of a growth trial comparing a range of nine test diets combining 3 crude protein (45,38 and 30%) and 3 digestible energy (16,5, 14,5 and 12,5 kJ/gram) levels. A high crude protein content (45% dry matter) and a protein to energy ratio of ≥ 27 mg protein per kJ digestible energy was shown to promote optimal growth rate and feed conversion ratio in juvenile X helleri. The final body protein and lipid content of the fish were significantly correlated with the dietary protein to energy ratio. The nutritional value of identical dietary formulations prepared by drum-drying or cold extrusion techniques and presented either as flake or crumble particles was evaluated in a growth trial and through analysis of vitamin C levels in the diets. Up to 27% of vitamin C activity was destroyed during the drum-drying of flake diets, while 80% of the remaining vitamin C was lost through leaching within 10 minutes of immersion in water. A crumble-type diet was shown to be acceptable to X helleri, and yielded significantly better growth rate and feed conversion than the equivalent flake feed. Almost 19% of fish fed the flake diets developed vitamin C deficiency symptoms including scoliosis and lordosis, while this was completely prevented by feeding crumbles, indicating a significant restriction of leaching losses from this type of particle. The use of livefeed (Daphnia spp.) as a daily supplement to dry feeds was shown to result in a significant improvement in growth rate and survival of juvenile swordtail fish. Furthermore, the synergistic action of nutrients contained in the livefeed resulted in an improvement in the feed conversion efficiency of the artificial formulation. While mortalities of 13,4% and 15% were recorded in fish fed exclusively on flake feed or Daphnia, no mortality occurred in the group fed the supplemented diet. Furthermore, the incidence of vitamin C deficiency symptoms was prevented by daily supplementation with Daphnia. Fish fed exclusively on Daphnia exhibited significantly more intense pigmentation due to carotenoids contained in the livefeed. In broodstock fish maintained primarily on flake diets, growth rate, feed conversion ratio as well as reproductive performance, as measured by fecundity, were significantly improved by daily livefeed supplementation. Weekly supplementation showed no measurable advantage over flake feed only. A direct correlation was demonstrated between fecundity and size of female fish with a mean fecundity of 190 embryos per female in those fed a daily Daphnia supplement. This was significantly higher than the yield from the non-supplemented or weekly supplemented treatments (133 and 140 embryos per female respectively). Despite these differences, the number of young harvested during the experiment did not differ between treatments and this discrepancy was ascribed to parental cannibalism of newborn juveniles. This phenomenon constitutes a major potential bottleneck in production with estimates of up to seventy percent of young lost in some exp experimental tanks. In conclusion, the present study demonstrated that established aquaculture nutrition principles and techniques are applicable to the tropical ornamental fish species, X helleri. It was demonstrated that by using balanced crumble feed formulations, and regular livefeed supplementation, production yields under intensive conditions may be significantly improved. Suggestions for future work on poeciliid production in South Africa include investigation of the economic implications of the recommendations stemming from this project, and further research into effective restriction of parental cannibalism of newborn fish.

These rates were significantly higher for fed as opposed to unfed abalone. Equations were derived to predict oxygen consumption and ammonia production for fed and unfed animals for a range of temperatures and size classes of abalone. A 96h LC50 lethal toxicity test for exposure to ammonia established 1.08mg.1⁻¹ of unionised ammonia as the lethal limit. A test on the long term effects on growth of acute exposure (12h) to various sublethal concentrations of ammonia showed no significant effects on growth for concentrations below 0.88 mg.1⁻¹. A safe chronic exposure level of 0.02 mg.1¹ NH₃-N was used to predict optimal flow rates required per kilogram of abalone in a rearing tank over a range of size classes and temperatures. The physiological and biological requirements of H. midae and the implications of this knowledge for rearing tank management and optimal design are discussed.

The time taken for the nitrification process to become established was 40-45 days. Mortality of fish attributed to elevated nitrite concentrations were recorded during the initial conditioning phase of the systems. Un-ionised ammonia concentrations did not attain lethal levels during this period. Nitrate concentrations accumulated slowly throughout the study, while the pH and alkalinity of the water decreased with progressive nitrification. Levels of carbon dioxide, calcium, dissolved and suspended solids remained relatively stable until the carrying capacity of the systems was increased, upon which they increased rapidly and general water quality deteriorated. Permanently elevated concentrations of ammonia and nitrite served as an indication that the carrying capacity of the systems had been exceeded. The use of ozone as a water enhancement treatment in aquaculture systems during one- and six-hour applications was also considered in this study. Ozonation significantly reduced nitrite levels at · low concentrations (0,1 - 0,15 mg/l), although they returned to pre-treatment levels within a few hours of cessation of the treatment. The formation of an unstable, intermediate product that reforms as nitrite in the absence of ozone, rather than the complete oxidation of nitrite to nitrate, is proposed. Ozonation also resulted in decreased dissolved solids, and improved the clarity and odour of the water. Ozone had no effect on ammonia concentrations (at pH > 7,0), or on nitrate or calcium levels, and did not conclusively increase the redox potential of the water. Residual ozone concentrations up to 0,04 mg/l in a sixhour treatment had no harmful effects on rainbow trout, and there were no signs of gas-bubble disease arising from supersaturation of the water with oxygen.
