Puma (Puma concolor) diet and habitat use in south-west New Mexico

- Description: The puma (Puma concolor) is a wide-ranging large felid species occupying an extensive geographic range throughout North and South America, and site-specific research on their diet is important for local management. Like other large felids, puma diet may differ between sexes due to size dimorphism, and between seasons due to changes in prey vulnerability and availability. This study assessed the influence of sex and season on puma diet in south-west New Mexico in terms of prey species and prey size categories. Pumas specialised on mule deer and elk throughout the year, and killed a range of other species of different sizes. The diet of the smaller female puma was nested within the diet of males, supporting the size-nested strategy. The effect of puma sex on prey species and size categories was independent of season, and vice versa, and the probability of a female making a medium-sized kill such as mule deer was higher than for males, while the probability of an extra-large kill such as elk was substantially greater for males. The probability of pumas killing either mule deer or elk in each season was similar, and greater than other species categories. Additionally, individual puma strongly influenced all prey species and size categories killed. The results from this study concur with previous findings on the importance of mule deer and elk in puma diet, and suggest that puma predation may also impact a number of other species, particularly smaller herbivores like collared peccary, and mesocarnivores such as skunks. , Thesis (MSc) -- Faculty of Science, Zoology and Entomology, 2022

- Description: Protected areas are becoming increasingly isolated refugia for large carnivores and are critical for their survival. Spotted hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta) have, for centuries, been ‘managed’ as problem causing animals and their conservation has been largely overlooked. To preserve a population, it is paramount to understand its distribution and abundance through reliable and cost-effective monitoring techniques. My study estimated the density of spotted hyaenas and their use of space in Hluhluwe–iMfolozi Park (HiP), South Africa. I compared camera trap by-catch data and call-up surveys between 2013–2018 to assess spotted hyaena densities. The camera trap data estimated an average of 16.72 (SD: ±2.22) hyaenas per 100 km2 between 2013–2018, with an annual estimated high of 19.01 in 2018 and a low of 12.77 in 2015. The call-up surveys consistently produced lower estimates than those obtained from the camera trap data. These results highlight the importance of calibrating the response probability factor for call-up surveys to maintain precision. The space use of spotted hyaenas was analysed using the photo-capture data obtained during the same six-year period, to produce individual 100% Minimum Convex Polygon’s (MCPs). Seven clan territories were identified from individual female home ranges that overlapped by more than 66% of their MCPs. Territory sizes were similar to historical estimates for the park, with averages of 13.96 (SD: ±6.48) km2 in Hluhluwe and 34.61 (SD: ±23.87) km2 in iMfolozi. My study successfully used by-catch camera data to calculate annual density estimates and investigate the spatial use patterns for spotted hyaenas in HiP. I demonstrate that this approach is cost-effective and reliable for calculating density estimates. Conservation practitioners should take heed of the advancements in technology and analytical capacity now available to them to improve monitoring efforts. - Description: Carnivore intra-guild interactions can be important drivers of carnivore community composition and ecosystem functioning. Large carnivores are particularly important since they occupy the highest trophic levels and can exert extensive influences on subordinate carnivores and prey species. Given Africa’s rapidly expanding human population, enclosed reserves such as those found in South Africa, may become increasingly important for carnivore conservation. A major concern, however, is that the interactions and co-existence of multiple carnivores in these systems is poorly understood. Additionally, the majority of reserves in South Africa are small ( 400km²), potentially increasing the likelihood of competition. My research aimed to provide insight into the interactions and co-existence of a multi-carnivore community within a small, enclosed reserve in South Africa (Selati Game Reserve). I tackled this task by using a combination of field techniques including camera trap surveys, ungulate transect surveys, aerial count surveys, location data collected from collared large carnivores and scat and kill site analyses. I found that carnivore-carnivore interactions, and their associated impacts, varied within the carnivore guild and that co-existence may be due to trade-offs between various risks (i.e. interference and exploitative competition) and benefits (i.e. resources such as food and space). My findings also revealed that large carnivores, such as lions (Panthera leo), spotted hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta) and leopards (Panthera pardus) do not have homogenous effects and that site-specific research on multiple-carnivores is integral for conserving biodiversity and ecosystem dynamics. Lions were the dominant large carnivore (in terms of intra-guild predation, space use and resource use) despite being outnumbered seven to one by spotted hyaenas. Leopard occupancy was negatively influenced by lions and leopard diet overlapped almost completely (91%) with spotted hyaenas, suggesting increased kleptoparasitism of leopard kills by spotted hyaenas. While my study provides valuable insight into the complexity of carnivore intra-guild competition in a small, enclosed reserve it also highlights major research gaps and emphasises the need for ecosystem-based research throughout southern Africa to fully understand how multiple sympatric carnivores co-exist in these systems.
