Exploring rural youth livelihood opportunities: a case study of a youth centre in Bizana

- Description: Throughout South Africa, youth that are not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) continue to face many socio-economic challenges, including unemployment. Bizana, a small rural town in the Eastern Cape, is no exception. This study explores rural youth livelihood opportunities for youth NEET in Bizana. There is limited research done to understand the role of youth centres in providing accessing to rural youth livelihood opportunities. As a result, this study sought to understand the role of youth centres in re-integrating youth NEET into the labour market, as well as into education and training institutions. It utilizes the case study of the Bizana Love Life youth centre by looking at the programmes they offer, and whether they enhance livelihood opportunities for youth NEET. The Sustainable Livelihoods Approach (SLA) was used as a theoretical lens in understanding rural youth livelihood opportunities for youth NEET in Bizana, by identifying the challenges they face and the assets they use to enhance their livelihoods. Against this backdrop, the study adopted a qualitative research approach and an explorative case study design and was supplemented by purposive and snowball sampling methods. Data was obtained using semi-structured interviews with twelve youth NEET participants who are part of the programmes of the youth centre, and two staff members of the youth centre. Findings were analysed using open coding and thematic analysis in line with the objectives of the study. The findings of the study revealed that in attempting to gain employment, extended family support, parenthood, financial reasons, household chores, poor academic performance and lack of work experience were some of the challenges facing rural youth NEET in Bizana. The findings indicate that a combination of human and social capital can be used to support youth NEET in gaining confidence and in preparing them for the workplace. With these findings, the study indicates the need to strengthen existing youth programmes that cater for youth NEET, who are the most vulnerable in the labour market, through skills development and broadening of their social networks. As a policy recommendation, the national and provincial government must work with youth centres and other stakeholders to establish policies that cater for the development of youth NEET. , Thesis (MSocSci) -- Faculty of Humanities, Sociology, 2023

- Description: Over the years, there have been complaints of poor service delivery in Zimbabwe’s Urban Councils. Newspapers in Zimbabwe have been filled with stories of poor service delivery and citizen grievances. Existing literature on service delivery has focused on the causes of poor service delivery, blaming them solely on the local government authorities. The literature has blamed poor service delivery in Zimbabwe on corruption, polarisation, politicisation, and incapacitation amongst other things. What is not highlighted is the role that citizens play and their responsibility in ensuring that there is proper service delivery. This thesis discusses the ways in which citizens participate in local government service delivery in Chiredzi which is an urban Council in Zimbabwe. To establish citizen participation in Chiredzi, this theory draws upon the social capital theory focusing on its trust, network, and norms aspect. Social capital facilitates an analysis of citizen participation and service delivery in Chiredzi. For this study,a qualitative research methodology was used. This methodology consisted of semi-structured telephone interviews with participants together with relevant documents. As much as government driven self-help projects in Lesotho contribute to growing the rural economy, there is limited research that looks the sustainability of these interventions. Much of the literature in Lesotho reveal that self-help agricultural projects have focused on people being provided with food-for-work, or cash-for-work, these offered little benefits and temporary relief for hunger for beneficiaries. This study seeks to understand how self-help agricultural projects can sustainable improve the lives of Rothe community in Lesotho. The study drew from Sustainable Livelihoods Approach to understand self-help agricultural projects in Rothe, Lesotho. The study employed a qualitative case study approach, supplemented by purposive and snowball sampling methods and semi-structured interviews to select and interview self-help project beneficiaries and Field Officers of RSDA in Rothe Village. The findings revealed that self-help agricultural projects are alternative development interventions for improving the quality lives of poor rural villagers. These development interventions enable people to access livelihoods resources, assets, and social capitals that are important to improve, and sustain livelihoods. Additionally, they improve capabilities of the poor, and contribute to their overall development. The thesis concludes that these development interventions have a role to play in alleviating rural poverty lives as a way to ensure equitable distribution of resources. The study recommends that the government, people on the ground and RSDA should work together to strengthen people’s capabilities through self-help agricultural projects to promote welfare and well-being of rural people.
