  • Description: In the middle of this song the headman and the owner of the hut got up, delievered a rousing speech and stepped back to his place on the left of the door, very pleased with himself. After that the woman resumed singing with renewed vigour, stood up and accompanied themselves by a double stamp instead of the single stamp usually heard further south. Topical song sung in the evening with clapping.

The Malipenga dance of the Tonga and other tribes of north central Nyasaland was originated, they say, in military drill where it imitates. With African genius for converting what is normally a drudgery into a game, these Tonga made barrack square drilling into a form of enjoyable dance, with opportunities for all to shine in the grace of their movements. The instruments of the mirliton buzzers so that anyone who can sing a Tonga tune can equally well participate in the Malipenga band. Short gourds or horns are used for the higher pitched voices and longer for the bases. 4 Movements of the Malipenga dance, the first 2 with Chandi and Muganda drums, with 12 singing horns (calabash), 1 bass drum.

  • Description: The chisanzhi were resonated on gourds (painted and decorated) which are called chilo-o. The chisanzhi-chinene was made out of the central ribs of palm-fronds. The 2 dancers wore tribal dress with colobus monkey-skin belted round their waists, multiple, girdles of black and red twisted thongs and bells slung at the back of the waist. One wore a colobus monkey skin headdress. Panpipes- Shiba. These were end-blown flutes, in small rafts of 2 or 3. Kalombo dance with 1 chisanzhi-chinene mbira (in a raft with bamboo notes), 2 chisanzhi mbira, 4 sets of panpipes, 1 basket rattle and a stick tapped on the side of gourd resonator.
