- Description: Global climate changes have been associated with ocean warming and sea-level rise. Armouring of coastlines has become common practice with the increasing threat of coastal erosion. The transformation of soft sediment habitats to hard, artificial habitats because of coastline armouring can lead to changes in species diversity, composition and distribution. It is, therefore, essential to assess changes to habitats from coastal development as well as the ecological impact erosion control structures have within coastal systems. Ecological engineering attempts to combine engineering principals and ecological processes to reduce environmental impacts from coastal development and the implementation of artificial structures. Estuaries are particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts through development, and are extremely important systems offering nursery and foraging grounds for many species. These systems are, however, particularly vulnerable to anthropogenic impacts from urbanisation and development. Within South Africa many estuaries are being transformed by the addition of artificial structures to combat erosion, one such structure is the Reno mattress (a flattened wire box filled with rocks). This study compared the fish diversity and abundances of existing Reno mattress structures and natural eelgrass (Zostera capensis) habitat in the Keurbooms Estuary, South Africa. Benthic invertebrates were sampled using standard core sampling and an adapted suction sampling approach within the two habitats. The non-destructive method of mini Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVs) was used to sample fish. Seasonal benthic invertebrate and fish abundances and assemblages were assessed from winter 2018 to spring 2019 with greater abundances of both recorded in summer. Significantly greater abundances, diversity, and richness of fish were found in the Reno mattress habitat compared to Z. capensis. Invertebrate taxa displayed some overlap between habitats, however, three higher taxonomic groups were only recorded within Reno mattress habitat and one only within the eelgrass habitat. Fish assemblages differed significantly between the two established habitats. A Before-After-Control-Impact (BACI) investigation was used to assess the ecological impact of newly installed Reno mattresses in the Keurbooms Estuary. Zostera capensis extent was sampled by determining the percentage cover of 0.5 m X 0.5 m quadrats and measurements of eelgrass blades. Percentage cover and blade length decreased during the installation of Reno mattress, but then recovered shortly after completion of the installation. Abundances, richness and diversity of invertebrates and fish were found to be similar before and after the installation which suggests that the installation had no net negative impact on the site. The Reno mattresses were found to attract fauna typical of rocky shore environments as well as a few invasive alien invertebrate species. This study noted that a hybrid habitat of Reno mattress and eelgrass was created and may in fact provide the positives of both to a system. In any coastal development it will be important to balance the demands of a growing population and the protection of natural habitats. The results of this study suggest that complex artificial structures such as Reno mattresses do provide habitat for fish and invertebrates. However, the use of these structures should be in combination with natural vegetation (e.g. as a hybrid habitat) and not one that replaces intertidal and subtidal natural habitat especially eelgrass. There is limited information regarding the ecological impacts of using Reno mattresses in estuaries and this study provides new information on their ecological efficacy that should be valuable for future coastal erosion control practices.

- Description: Invasive alien plants (IAPs) of various kinds pose a threat to ecosystems, biodiversity, conservation and overall economy. In a world experiencing exponential increase in IAPs – this issue has become endemic, especially for developing countries such as South Africa. South Africa is a water scarce country and IAPs increase water stress. Thus, South Africa must invest in a more realistic, environmentally and economically inclusive policy outlook on the management of IAPs including aquatic weeds. This is especially urgent when considering the changing global climate, which is predicted to further reduce the quantity and quality of potable water. The Working for Water Programme (WfW) in South Africa aimed at addressing the issue of IAPs in a way that protects the environment as well as produces maximum return to society through poverty alleviation. As such, the aquatic weeds management strategy put in place for four of South Africa’s aquatic weeds Pista stratiotes, Salvinia molesta, Azolla filiculoides and Myriophyllum aquaticum - should be one that is cost-effective, efficient and sustainable; yielding the best possible return on investment. Since these four weeds are already under complete biological control, in the absence of biological agents, the WfW programme would have used herbicides to control these weeds. As such, this thesis conducted a retrospective analysis of the relative herbicide cost-saving associated with the use of biological control. To do this, due to existing limitations, E. crassipes was used as a surrogate weed and its herbicide control costs were used as proxy for the herbicide control cost estimates of the four selected weeds; with reasonable conversion factors applied to cater for the biological difference of the five weeds. Using the cost benefit analysis (CBA) framework, the net present cost (NPC) of each control method was calculated to which the relative cost-saving was considered to represent the avoided cost of using biological control instead of chemical control on these weeds. The avoided cost was used as the main benefit component when deriving the relative benefit cost ratios (BCR). Two scenarios were used, one assuming no follow-up requirement and the other assuming one follow-up requirement for chemical control. Using an 8% discount rate, the study found that the estimated cost of the biological control method on all four aquatic weeds was about R7,843,205 while for chemical control the estimated costs would have costed R149,580,142, R268,264,838 and R881,711,738 for application by means of a boat, bakkie and knapsack. Chemical control cost estimates would have increased to about R164,538,052, R295,216,120 and R1,008,761,000 for boat, bakkie and knapsack approach respectively when including a possible follow-up programme. These would have led to positive BCRs of 90.24:1, 164.97:1 and 557.99:1 across the three chemical control approaches without a follow-up (with BCR of about 99.67:1, 182.00:1 and 631.56:1 for the boat, bakkie and knapsack approach respectively with the accepted follow-up programme). When running a sensitivity test with varying discount rates of 5% and 10%, these results remained robust. As such, failing to reject the dominant hypothesis in literature, the main conclusion of the study is that biological control is indeed the more cost-effective management option compared to chemical control with respect to herbicide cost-saving. Further, biological control is most-likely to produce more environmental cost-saving and water-saving over chemical control. The study recommends the continued use of the biological control investment on the four aquatic weeds under study as well as on emerging aquatic weeds such as Iris pseudacorus, Nymphaea mexicana and Sagittaria platyphylla in South Africa.

Complexes 3, 4, 5 and 6 where linked to oleic acid/oleylamine capped (OLA/OLM) silver-iron dimers (Ag-Fe3O4 OLA/OLM) and silver-iron core shell (Ag@Fe3O4 OLA/OLM) NPs via interaction between the nanoparticles and the imino group on the phthalocyanines. The phthalocyanine-NP conjugates afforded an increase in triplet quantum yields with a corresponding decrease in fluorescence quantum yield as compared to the phthalocyanine complexes alone. Complexes 3, 4 and their conjugates were then used for photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy on E. coli. The zwitterionic photosensitiser 4 and its conjugates showed better efficiency for photodynamic antimicrobial chemotherapy compared to their neutral counterparts.

- Description: Background: Sitting for prolonged periods is common in the working environment. Office workers are exposed to long periods of sitting time at work. Research has reported associations between prolonged sitting and negative health implications. As such studies have proposed different interventions aimed at reducing sitting times in the workplace. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two different interventions, physical intervention (sit-stand worktables) and personal intervention (instruction to stretch) on compliance and reducing occupational sitting behaviour. The study also aimed to investigate the effectiveness of interventions in improving or impairing mood. Methods: The study took the form of a fieldbased study atRhodes University, Makhanda, South Africa. Fifteen full–time office workers in different divisions participated in the study. Participants were randomly allocated to either the physical or personal intervention group. In both intervention groups, partic ipants were prompted to stand for five minutes every hour during the workday to either work in a standing position or perform stretches. Over the course of the experiment, desk occupancy, sitting/standing time and mood effect were recorded in both intervention groups Both intervention groups were monitored for a period of three months (58 days). Results: The study found that the physical intervention group was an effective approach to reduce prolonged sitting in the workplace in comparison to the personal intervention group. Over the course of the experiment, there was sustain usage of interventions in both groups, however, in the physical intervention group desk usage decreased overtime. The findings of the study also show that some participants were more compliant with the study procedures than others. It was also found that mood improved upon introducing interventions in the workplace. However, with the outcomes of the results, the study acknowledges that several factors emerged which are likely to impact compliance, which future studies may investigate. Conclusion: Although sit-stand worktables are expensive, it seems like introducing them was successful in reducing sitting time and changing sitting behaviour in comparison to an intervention that instruct s individuals to stand up and stretch.

- Description: This thesis is concerned with describing the stakes of reading, writing and criticising fictional depictions of rape in a country plagued by high levels of sexual violence. I consider the capacity of rape representations to cause harm to women and rape survivors, and worsen the various injuries suffered by survivors as a direct or indirect consequence of rape. The possibility of such harm prompts me to examine the role and responsibilities of readers and critics in facilitating or preventing such harm. I further discuss the potential strategies of harm prevention that readers of novelistic portrayals of rape might adopt as well as the positive outcomes that such reading strategies make possible, and which might balance out the risks that accompany them. My description of the potential harm of rape representations combines postmodern critical feminist analysis with Miranda Fricker’s work on epistemic justice and Judith Herman’s work on trauma in order to illustrate the way that these representations shape our conception of rape in a manner that affects everything from how it is enacted to our treatment of survivors to the possibility of their recovery from posttraumatic stress disorder. In order to situate my analysis in the context of South African literature and to explore the notion of responsibility in relation to the writing of scenes of rape, I utilise a close reading of J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace. Furthermore, I discuss the utility and limits of the critical feminist strategy of using a normative critical approach to rape representations in order to prevent harm. Ultimately, I argue that the use of such a strategy, along with the development of a purpose-honed adaptive critical style, is essential to the fulfilment of our responsibilities as readers and to the prevention of further suffering.

- Description: This thesis is concerned with describing the stakes of reading, writing and criticising fictional depictions of rape in a country plagued by high levels of sexual violence. I consider the capacity of rape representations to cause harm to women and rape survivors, and worsen the various injuries suffered by survivors as a direct or indirect consequence of rape. The possibility of such harm prompts me to examine the role and responsibilities of readers and critics in facilitating or preventing such harm. I further discuss the potential strategies of harm prevention that readers of novelistic portrayals of rape might adopt as well as the positive outcomes that such reading strategies make possible, and which might balance out the risks that accompany them. My description of the potential harm of rape representations combines postmodern critical feminist analysis with Miranda Fricker’s work on epistemic justice and Judith Herman’s work on trauma in order to illustrate the way that these representations shape our conception of rape in a manner that affects everything from how it is enacted to our treatment of survivors to the possibility of their recovery from posttraumatic stress disorder. In order to situate my analysis in the context of South African literature and to explore the notion of responsibility in relation to the writing of scenes of rape, I utilise a close reading of J.M. Coetzee’s Disgrace. Furthermore, I discuss the utility and limits of the critical feminist strategy of using a normative critical approach to rape representations in order to prevent harm. Ultimately, I argue that the use of such a strategy, along with the development of a purpose-honed adaptive critical style, is essential to the fulfilment of our responsibilities as readers and to the prevention of further suffering.

It was carried out in the Otjozondjupa region in Namibia at Wato Secondary School (pseudonym). It was conducted with a Grade 10 Physical Science class consisting of 30 learners. To generate data, questionnaires, focus group interviews, lesson observations, stimulated recall interviews, as well as learners’ journal reflections were used. Conceptions, dispositions, interest and sense-making were used as conceptual lenses while Vygotsky’s social constructivism was the theoretical framework that informed this study. Quantitative data were analysed using the conceptual lenses and were subsequently presented in tables and graphs. That is, a deductive approach to analysis was used. On the other hand, a thematic approach was used to analyse the qualitative data. That is, qualitative data were inductively analysed to come up with sub-themes and themes. The findings from this study revealed significant shifts in learners’ conceptions, dispositions and interest towards science after the use of easily accessible resources to do hands-on practical activities. Similarly, learners’ sense-making of science concepts improved. This study thus recommends that science teachers should, where possible, make use of easily accessible resources to carry out hands-on practical activities during their science lessons. During such hands-on practicals, however, emphasis should be on the development of scientific concepts.

Data sources comprised of my reflective journal, learner feedback, video- and audio-recorded lessons, examples of learners’ work and interviews with critical peers who observed critical moments from the video recordings. I was guided through the analysis phase by two analytical frameworks: Karsenty and Arcavi’s Six Lense Framework (SLF) and Adler and Ronda’s Mathematics Discourse in Instruction (MDI) framework which I adapted. Using three key lessons, I provide detailed descriptions of how the lessons progressed and then identify and discuss some of the key findings and recurring themes in relation to my study’s research question and goals. Through this process, I show that my integration of mathematics and musical activities helped promote active engagement amongst learners and provided them with co-equivalent opportunities to appreciate the importance of note values in music, and relate this back to understandings around the inverse order relation of unit fractions.

The main focus of this study was to investigate entrepreneurship education and the type of biodiversity entrepreneurial practices and opportunities that could create value for youth via the use of green technology: the PLA Roll Planter in the biodiversity and agriculture sector. The study was inspired by the need to identify and analyse knowledge, skills and entrepreneurial aspects associated with the use of green technology to strengthen entrepreneurial learning for youth participation in the green economy and green work. The study employed the use of Communities of Practice (COP) and Value Creation adopted from Wenger as theories and a focal lens to portray the contribution of technological practices to youth sustainable livelihoods and green work in the biodiversity sector. Research on the GTECH technology that was in focus in this study, the PLA Roll Planter, shows that newly introduced green innovations can increase agricultural outputs without depleting presently available resources. The study applied qualitative research approaches in a case study of the G-Tech PLA Roll Planter training and participation of a youth Community of Practice (COP) in Gauteng. It started by examining the knowledge capital as potential value embedded in the training and knowledge, skills and entrepreneurial aspects of the G-Tech PLA Roll Planter practices. The study then constructed four value creation stories of youth in the COP to understand other forms of value that were created for youth. The findings of the study depicted that the adoption of improved agricultural technology (PLA Roll Planter) has positive impacts and knowledge capital that can translate into other forms of value to support the emergence of viable economic activity in the agricultural sector. This can help increase food security and the ability to withstand risk of damaging the environment. The study shows that different forms of value were created for youth, and offers insight into how learning in communities of practice can help to advance entrepreneursip education in the biodiversity and especially the agro-ecological production sector.

- Description: Invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella, caused by the intracellular pathogen Salmonella enterica, has emerged as a major cause of bloodstream infections. It remains a neglected infection responsible for many deaths in Africa, as it fails to receive the level of support that is given to most better known infections. There are currently no vaccines against invasive non-typhoidal Salmonella. First-line antibiotics have been used for treatment, however, the rise in the resistance of the bacteria against these antibiotics has made treatment of invasive salmonellosis into a clinical problem. Therefore, the discovery of new compounds for the development of antibiotic drugs is required. Central metabolic pathways can be a useful source for identifying drug targets and among these is the non-mevalonate pathway, one of the pathways used for the biosynthesis of isoprenoid precursors. The second step of the non-mevalonate pathway involves the NADPH-dependent reduction of 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate (DOXP) into 2-C-methyl-D-erythritol 4-phosphate (MEP). 1-Deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate (DOXP) reductoisomerase plays a vital role in the catalysis of this reaction and requires NADPH and divalent metal cations as co-factors for its activity. In this investigation recombinant DOXP reductoisomerase from Salmonella enterica, Plasmodium falciparum and Mycobacterium tuberculosis were biochemically characterized as potential targets for developing drugs that could be used as treatment of the disease. The expression and nickel-chelate affinity purification of S. enterica DOXP reductoisomerase in a fully functional native state was successfully achieved. However, the expression and purification of P. falciparum DXR and M. tuberculosis DXR was unsuccessful due to the formation of insoluble inclusion bodies. Although alternative purification strategies were explored, including dialysis and slow dilution, these proteins remained insoluble, making their functional analysis not possible. An NADPH-dependent enzyme assay was used to determine the activity of S. enterica DXR. This assay monitors the reduction of DOXP to MEP by measuring the absorbance at 340 nm, which reflects the concentration of NADPH. An alternative assay, resazurin reduction, which monitors the NADPH-dependent reduction of resazurin to resorufin, was explored for detecting enzyme activity. The recombinant S. enterica DOXP reductoisomerase had a specific activity of 0.126 ± 0.0014 μmol/min/mg protein and a Km and Vmax of 881 μM and 0.249 μmol/min/mg respectively. FR900098, a derivative of fosmidomycin, is a well-known inhibitor of DXR, however, the sensitivity of S. enterica DXR towards FR900098 has not yet been reported. The NADPH dependent enzyme and resazurin reduction assays were used to determine whether FR900098 has enzyme inhibitory effects against S. enterica DXR. Upon confirming that FR900098 is able to inhibit S. enterica DXR, FR900098 was used as a control compound in the screening of novel compounds. The S. enterica DXR enzyme was screened for inhibition by the collection of compounds from the Pathogen Box. Compounds that exhibited the desired inhibitory activity, referred to as ‘hits’ were selected for further investigation. These hits were confirmed using the NADPH-dependent enzyme assay, resulting in the identification of two different DXR inhibitor compounds, MMV002816, also known as diethylcarbamazine, and MMV228911. The inhibitory concentration (IC50) values of FR900098, MMV002816 and MMV228911 against S. enterica DXR were 1.038 μM, 2.173 μM and 6.861 μM respectively. The binding mode of these compounds to S. enterica DXR could lead to the discovery of novel druggable sites on the enzyme and stimulate the development of new antibiotics that can be used for treating Salmonella infections.

Evaluation of Baited Remote Underwater Video Systems (BRUVS) for monitoring fish communities in Lake Malawi/Niassa

- Description: Baited Remote Underwater Video systems (BRUVS) have become a well-established in-situ monitoring technique in clearwater aquatic ecosystems. The relatively low cost, nondestructive and non-extractive nature of this technique permits BRUVS to be employed in a wide range of habitats. To date, the vast majority of studies using BRUVS technology have been conducted in marine habitats. Subsequently, BRUVS applications in freshwater habitats are scant, and techniques are not well developed. The primary objective of this thesis was to address this knowledge gap and develop standard operating procedures for BRUVS employment in Lake Malawi/Niassa and explore the potential of BRUVS as a monitoring tool for fish communities in the African Great Lakes. Eight easily identifiable species groups, representative of Lake Malawi/Niassa inshore fish communities, were used to develop the technique. The optimal BRUVS deployment time to obtain 95 % species accumulation was achieved in a 15-minute recording period. Power analysis, using a pre-determined 80 % power, a confidence interval of 95 % and a significance level of < 0.05 was used to determine annual sampling effort requirements for each species group. The power analysis was performed to detect a 10 % change in abundance over a hypothetical 10-year monitoring scenario. In areas where fish abundance was lower, the sampling effort required to monitor key fisheries species was significantly higher. For example, Chambo, the local Oreochromis (Nyasalapia) species flock, required an annual sampling effort of 120 deployments in Malawi compared to 56 in Mozambique ( < 0.05). Chambo had a higher detection probability in areas of lesser fishing pressure and were found in higher abundances in deeper, less accessible habitats. Deep-water (> 20 m) and rocky habitats were most important in explaining Chambo abundance and detection probability. The size-structure of Chambo in Lake Malawi/Niassa reflects size-specific depth and habitat migrations. Larger Chambo were observed aggregating in waters deeper than 20 m and a broader size range of individuals were observed utilising structured habitat. The effects of fishing are apparent in the size-structure of Chambo in the areas sampled. In study areas exposed to greater levels of fishing pressure – such as Malawi, the BRUVS detected significantly fewer individuals within sexually mature size classes, and the average size was smaller than in areas with less exploitation.

The relatively low cost, nondestructive and non-extractive nature of this technique permits BRUVS to be employed in a wide range of habitats. To date, the vast majority of studies using BRUVS technology have been conducted in marine habitats. Subsequently, BRUVS applications in freshwater habitats are scant, and techniques are not well developed. The primary objective of this thesis was to address this knowledge gap and develop standard operating procedures for BRUVS employment in Lake Malawi/Niassa and explore the potential of BRUVS as a monitoring tool for fish communities in the African Great Lakes. Eight easily identifiable species groups, representative of Lake Malawi/Niassa inshore fish communities, were used to develop the technique. The optimal BRUVS deployment time to obtain 95 % species accumulation was achieved in a 15-minute recording period. Power analysis, using a pre-determined 80 % power, a confidence interval of 95 % and a significance level of < 0.05 was used to determine annual sampling effort requirements for each species group. The power analysis was performed to detect a 10 % change in abundance over a hypothetical 10-year monitoring scenario. In areas where fish abundance was lower, the sampling effort required to monitor key fisheries species was significantly higher. For example, Chambo, the local Oreochromis (Nyasalapia) species flock, required an annual sampling effort of 120 deployments in Malawi compared to 56 in Mozambique ( < 0.05). Chambo had a higher detection probability in areas of lesser fishing pressure and were found in higher abundances in deeper, less accessible habitats. Deep-water (> 20 m) and rocky habitats were most important in explaining Chambo abundance and detection probability. The size-structure of Chambo in Lake Malawi/Niassa reflects size-specific depth and habitat migrations. Larger Chambo were observed aggregating in waters deeper than 20 m and a broader size range of individuals were observed utilising structured habitat. The effects of fishing are apparent in the size-structure of Chambo in the areas sampled. In study areas exposed to greater levels of fishing pressure – such as Malawi, the BRUVS detected significantly fewer individuals within sexually mature size classes, and the average size was smaller than in areas with less exploitation.

It is an action research aimed at understanding and systematically investigating how and what it means to work with bilingual mediation to ensure cognition, with emphasis on task design, facilitation for cognition, mediation forms and language use. This thesis was motivated by three issues that are still not being adequately addressed: the low level of cognitive work in South African schools, the failure to use the home languages of children throughout schooling as a medium of instruction and assessment (while providing excellent access to English as subject), and a top-down approach to both policy development and teacher professionalisation. These three issues drove me to explore theories that can help address them, and that is how I came to rely mostly on mediation, biliteracy and a task-based approach to teaching. For this research, on data handling I prepared and taught six lessons, but only three of the six lessons were recorded, transcribed and analysed for empirical data. I chose data handling, as in my previous experience I found it to include all the mathematical problem-solving skills which involve addition subtraction, analysing and comparing information. It also offered opportunities for language use, and meaningful interactive co-construction and acquiring of knowledge in the process of teaching and learning. This turned into a form of theory-driven action research, which was also developmental. I was critically reflective on my practices, and my facilitation for cognition and how I use language to make cognition possible. I also looked at the types of activities that I gave learners to help reach maximum development. The data collected from the classroom interactions, shows how I, in some instances, would take decisions, implement them and then find them not to be effective. It also shows some of the challenges I came across, from myself and the learners. Learners challenges were, unfamiliarity with the systematic build-up of data handling, filling in tables, transferring information from one form into a different form, and constructing and analysing bar graphs. This was part of pedagogynot the policy, which indicated inadequate teacher development. This could be because data handling is allocated minimal weighting from the CAPS document, and teachers do not go as in depth as they need to in dealing with data handling. My challenge was to prepare the grade 3 class for more data handling encounters in the higher grades. I had to ensure they grasped data handling concepts in their mother tongue before the switch to English as LoLT, as prescribed by policy. But, it does not explicitly state how Science teachers should go about enacting this. It is against this caveat that this study aimed at finding out indigenous practices and knowledge in the community and from two community members that could be integrated into the topic on waves and sound in Grade 10 Physical Sciences lessons with the view to establishing its influence (or not) on learners’ conceptions and dispositions towards Science. The study was conducted at Buyelembo Combined School (pseudonym), a township school in the Sarah Baartman District, in the Eastern Cape in South Africa. The research participants were 18 Grade 10 Physical Sciences learners, two Physical Sciences teachers and two community members. Data were generated using the learners’ group activity, discussions and presentations, observations (participatory observations and lesson observations), stimulated recall interviews and reflections. A thematic and inductive-deductive approach to data analysis was employed to come up with sub-themes and themes. Underpinned by an interpretivist perspective and informed by Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory, a qualitative case study approach was adopted. Additionally, Ogunniyi’s Contiguity Argumentative Theory (CAT) was used as an analytical framework. The five cognitive states of CAT were employed to analyse data during the social interactions to surface any contradictions. The findings from this study revealed that there are indigenous practices and knowledge in relation to the sea that can be integrated into the topic on waves and sound in Grade 10 Physical Sciences lessons. However, regarding relevance of those indigenous practices and knowledge to science, the study revealed that the learners found no relevance at all but discussions and argumentation were enhanced. In addition, findings from this study revealed that the learners’ conceptions, dispositions, and sense-making in science were influenced positively through using hands-on practical activities when teaching Science concepts. Lastly, the study revealed that the use of mother tongue by the community members, learners and the teachers together with the language of learning and teaching promoted learner talk. Based on the findings of this study, I recommend that there is a need to support teachers on how to integrate indigenous practices and knowledge in their teaching, particularly when teaching Physical Sciences.

It is against this background that this study sought to explore an intervention on the development and implementation of model lessons on features of the moon that integrate local or IK in Grade 4 classes. The study adopted a qualitative case study approach underpinned by an interpretivist perspective. Within the interpretive paradigm, a qualitative case study approach was employed. The participants were four Grade 4 Natural Sciences and Technology teachers from selected schools in the Chris Hani West District. Data were gathered and triangulated using questionnaires, semi-structured interviews, document analysis, a presentation by an expert community member, workshop discussions and journal reflections. Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory and Shulman’s pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) were used as a theoretical framework and analytical framework respectively. From the socio-cultural theory, three concepts were used: social interactions, mediation of learning and the zone of proximal development (ZPD). Additionally, within PCK, Mavhunga and Rollnick’s (2013) five Topic Specific Pedagogical Content Knowledge components: learners’ prior knowledge, what is difficult to understand, curricular saliency, representations and conceptual teaching strategies were used as analytical tools. A thematic approach to qualitative data analysis was adopted, to come up with sub-themes in relation to my research questions. The findings from this study revealed that before the intervention, some teachers had a narrow understanding of local or IK and how it could be integrated in their lessons. As a result, some teachers had never implemented integration of local or IK as required by the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS) and the principles of the National Curriculum Statement. The findings of this study thus showed that after the intervention, teachers felt equipped with understanding of local or IK. Additionally, they were able to develop their own model lessons that integrated it. The study thus recommends that teachers should be supported as far as possible in order to be able to integrate local or IK in their science lessons.

- Description: The aims of this study were to evaluate the impacts of agricultural land management strategies and climate change on irrigated maize production in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. To achieve these aims, the study was guided by two overarching research questions, subsequently broken down into more specific questions. The first research question examined the reasons behind farmers’ current agricultural land management practices, the values they assigned to different agroecosystem services, their perceptions of climate change and the adaptation strategies they used to address challenges associated with agricultural crop production and climate change. To answer these questions, a survey of conventional farmers in the Eastern Cape was carried out. The survey targeted farmers who used fertilisers and irrigation water in their day to day farming. Results showed that farmers recognised the different benefits that agroecosystems provided even though they were not familiar with the term ‘ecosystem services.’ Farmers assigned a high value to food provisioning compared to other agroecosystem services and managed their farms for maximum crop yields or maximum crop quality. Fertiliser and irrigation water management decisions were based on multiple factors such as cost, availability of farming equipment and crop yield or crop quality considerations. Survey results showed that while most farmers were able to state the amount of fertiliser used per growing season, the majority of farmers did not know the amount of water they used per growing season. From the farmers’ survey it was recommended that extension services and agricultural education programmes be strengthened in the region to increase farmers’ knowledge on effective agricultural land management strategies that support sustainable intensification. The second research question investigated the effects of agricultural land management strategies and climate change on crop yields in the Eastern Cape. This investigation was done in three steps. First, a crop model, the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model was calibrated and validated using limited field data from maize variety trials carried out at the Cradock Research Farm in the Eastern Cape. Calibration and validation results proved satisfactory with model efficiencies (Nash Sutcliffe, NSE) greater than 0.5 for both calibration and validation. It was concluded that limited data from field trials on maize that only included grain yield and agricultural land management dates can be used for the calibration of the EPIC model to simulate maize production under South African conditions. In the second step, the calibrated model was applied to simulate different irrigation and fertiliser management strategies for maize production in the Eastern Cape. Different irrigation and Nitrogen (N) fertiliser levels were compared to find optimal irrigation and N fertiliser management strategies that would increase maize yields while minimising environmental pollution (nitrate leaching). Model outputs were also compared to the average yields obtained in the field trials (baseline) and to maize yields reported by farmers in the farmers’ survey. Results showed that improved management of irrigation water and N fertiliser could improve farmers’ maize yields from approximately 7.2 t ha-1 to approximately 12.2 t ha-1, an increase of approximately 69%. Results also revealed a trade-off between food provision and nitrate leaching. Simulations showed that increasing N fertiliser application under sufficient irrigation water levels would increase maize yields, however, this would be accompanied by an increase in N leaching. Lastly, the EPIC model was then applied to simulate the effects of future climate change on irrigated maize production in the Eastern Cape. For these simulations, the model was driven by statistically downscaled climate data derived from three General Circulation Models (GCMs) for two future climate periods, (2040-2069) and (2070-2099), under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs): RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. Future maize yields were compared to the baseline (1980-2010) maize yield average. All three climate models predicted a decline in maize yields, with yields declining by as much as 23.8% in RCP 8.5, 2070-2099. Simulations also predicted increases in average daily maximum and minimum temperatures for both the two future climate periods under both RCPs. Results also indicated a decrease in seasonal irrigation water requirements. Apart from challenges posed by climate change, farmers also faced other challenges such as access to markets and access to financial credit lines, challenges that prevented them from effectively adapting to climate change. The study therefore recommended that appropriate and adequate strategies be designed to help farmers in the region offset the projected decrease in maize production and increase crop yields while minimising negative environmental impacts.

- Description: The aims of this study were to evaluate the impacts of agricultural land management strategies and climate change on irrigated maize production in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. To achieve these aims, the study was guided by two overarching research questions, subsequently broken down into more specific questions. The first research question examined the reasons behind farmers’ current agricultural land management practices, the values they assigned to different agroecosystem services, their perceptions of climate change and the adaptation strategies they used to address challenges associated with agricultural crop production and climate change. To answer these questions, a survey of conventional farmers in the Eastern Cape was carried out. The survey targeted farmers who used fertilisers and irrigation water in their day to day farming. Results showed that farmers recognised the different benefits that agroecosystems provided even though they were not familiar with the term ‘ecosystem services.’ Farmers assigned a high value to food provisioning compared to other agroecosystem services and managed their farms for maximum crop yields or maximum crop quality. Fertiliser and irrigation water management decisions were based on multiple factors such as cost, availability of farming equipment and crop yield or crop quality considerations. Survey results showed that while most farmers were able to state the amount of fertiliser used per growing season, the majority of farmers did not know the amount of water they used per growing season. From the farmers’ survey it was recommended that extension services and agricultural education programmes be strengthened in the region to increase farmers’ knowledge on effective agricultural land management strategies that support sustainable intensification. The second research question investigated the effects of agricultural land management strategies and climate change on crop yields in the Eastern Cape. This investigation was done in three steps. First, a crop model, the Environmental Policy Integrated Climate (EPIC) model was calibrated and validated using limited field data from maize variety trials carried out at the Cradock Research Farm in the Eastern Cape. Calibration and validation results proved satisfactory with model efficiencies (Nash Sutcliffe, NSE) greater than 0.5 for both calibration and validation. It was concluded that limited data from field trials on maize that only included grain yield and agricultural land management dates can be used for the calibration of the EPIC model to simulate maize production under South African conditions. In the second step, the calibrated model was applied to simulate different irrigation and fertiliser management strategies for maize production in the Eastern Cape. Different irrigation and Nitrogen (N) fertiliser levels were compared to find optimal irrigation and N fertiliser management strategies that would increase maize yields while minimising environmental pollution (nitrate leaching). Model outputs were also compared to the average yields obtained in the field trials (baseline) and to maize yields reported by farmers in the farmers’ survey. Results showed that improved management of irrigation water and N fertiliser could improve farmers’ maize yields from approximately 7.2 t ha-1 to approximately 12.2 t ha-1, an increase of approximately 69%. Results also revealed a trade-off between food provision and nitrate leaching. Simulations showed that increasing N fertiliser application under sufficient irrigation water levels would increase maize yields, however, this would be accompanied by an increase in N leaching. Lastly, the EPIC model was then applied to simulate the effects of future climate change on irrigated maize production in the Eastern Cape. For these simulations, the model was driven by statistically downscaled climate data derived from three General Circulation Models (GCMs) for two future climate periods, (2040-2069) and (2070-2099), under two Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs): RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. Future maize yields were compared to the baseline (1980-2010) maize yield average. All three climate models predicted a decline in maize yields, with yields declining by as much as 23.8% in RCP 8.5, 2070-2099. Simulations also predicted increases in average daily maximum and minimum temperatures for both the two future climate periods under both RCPs. Results also indicated a decrease in seasonal irrigation water requirements. Data were collected through setting up and running a focus group session once a week over a period of five weeks, in which different career-related topics were discussed. The sample consisted of nine unemployed students who were currently not in a tertiary institution between the ages of 18-25 years. The findings indicated a noteworthy need for more relevant career interventions to be investigated and implemented for the diverse South African population. The study’s findings demonstrated that individuals might be more open to exploring career development through group rather than individual counselling. It was found that parents are the main career influencers in their children’s lives. Mothers were experienced as role models, supporters and encouragers while fathers were experienced as absent and unsupportive, playing little or no role in their children’s lives. The participants found this form of career exploration appealing as it allowed for peer consultation and the freedom to discuss career issues in a non-judgemental setting.

For many people in poorly resourced rural areas, one of the significant benefits of mobile phone usage is the expansion of social networks for resources or support. Social capital is one of the concepts that have been found to directly or indirectly influence many aspects of social life, communities and development. In the present study, I explore how mobile phones mediate bonding, bridging and linking social capital in a rural area on the Wild Coast of South Africa, Dwesa. I use individual semi-structured interviews with purposefully selected participants who are mobile phone owners in the area. I employ a thematic analysis to analyse their responses in relation to three dimensions of social capital, i.e. 1) trust and solidarity, 2) social cohesion and inclusion and 3) collective action and empowerment. Like in many South African rural areas, in Dwesa there is endemic poverty, inadequate services and infrastructure and high unemployment. The study found that by increased communication, mobile phones mostly strengthen bonding social capital between close ties who rely on each other for various forms of support. Mobile phones also facilitate the building of bridging social capital among members of various community groups by using WhatsApp group chats and Facebook. The little evidence on the relationship between mobile phone use and linking social capital in the area relates to group networks providing opportunities for interaction between community members and individuals in tertiary institutions and local government positions.

Exploring parents’ participation in school governance with the purpose of developing parents’ leadership: a formative intervention in a Namibian combined rural school

- Description: In a post-independent Namibia, the Education Act 16 of 2001 accorded democratic rights and equal opportunities to all education stakeholders, including parents, to be involved in educational decision-making in schools. This involvement advocated increasing the voice of the educational stakeholders at a grass roots level in an attempt to redress the past injustices of the apartheid education system. However, the studies carried out internationally, as well as in Africa and Namibia, reveal that the issue of democratic participation in school decisions is a restricted reality. This study was conducted in Happy (pseudonym) combined school, a state rural school in the Oshikoto Region, Northern Namibia, aimed at exploring parents’ participation in school governance. The study adopted an interventionist approach to develop parents’ leadership in school. Framed by a distributed leadership perspective, the main purpose of the study was to seek parents’ voices through participation for them to be catalysts for change in transforming parents’ leadership in school. For its theoretical and analytical framing, the study adopted the Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT). The study findings revealed that parents’ leadership as a concept was understood differently in the case study school and it was practiced within the boundaries of policies. Through the lens of distributed leadership, it was evident that distributed leadership was still in its infancy in the school, as only the characterisations of an authorised distributed leadership were evident in this school. The CHAT analysis revealed that parents’ leadership was constrained due to a number of challenges, including language barriers, transport to and from meetings and a lack of support from other parents and some teachers. Study participants, through participation in a Change Laboratory workshop process, envisioned some models such as raising funds to serve as an incentive for parents’ School Board members and for an information dissemination committee within the community to do educational campaigns in an effort to enhance parents’ leadership in school. To unleash distributed leadership in schools, the study offered some recommendations, including that parents’ leadership should be included as part of the curriculum at higher institutions in order to sensitise educators to this critical aspect of leadership, prior to joining the profession. Another recommendation was for stakeholders to make use of the study’s findings, when designing workshop materials and conducting workshops. Finally, the study recommended further interventionist research to be conducted on the same research topic, preferably on a larger scale, in an effort to add to the body of knowledge in the field of leadership and management, particularly with regards to parental leadership.

According to the World Health Organization, TB is the ninth leading cause of death worldwide ranking above HIV/AIDS. This high mortality rate of TB begs the questions about the efficiency of the current therapy and raises an urgent need to create novel anti-tuberculosis agents which will aid in curbing this burden. Quinoline containing compounds have remarkable biological activities across a wide spectrum of diseases including anti-tuberculosis. On the other hand, thiazolidinedione containing compounds possess a broad spectrum of biological properties. In this study, we rationally designed compounds containing these pharmacophoric units and investigated them for their potential biological activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Considering antimalarial activity of quinoline-based compounds, the compounds achieved were also cross-screened for their activity against the Plasmodium falciparum parasite, a causative agent of malaria. In all the synthesized compounds, compound 2.6a, 2.6b and 2.7b emerged as most active compounds against the H37Rv strain with MIC₉₀ values ranging in between of 1.08 – 17.1 μM. In addition, none of the compounds showed any inhibitory activities against the 3D7 strain of P. falciparum parasite. All the compounds prepared in this study showed no significant human cytotoxic effects as measured by HeLa cell line.
