  • Description: This is an attractive little song accompanied by a very old and wheezy concertina most of whose original buttons were missing, some of which had been cleverly replaced by bits of reed. The burden of the song may have been more pointed because the singer was in fact a criminal serving a long sentence. The gaol where the recording was made was an open one with no walls or locked gates, and the prisoners they said made no attempt to escape. The song was said to have originated in the Gollel district in Southern Swaziland. Topical song with concertina.

  • Description: The name of the this tune 'Jerusarima' is an adaptation of 'Jerusalem'. The title was given originally to a new style of dancing started by pupils in the schools in the early 1920's or even earlier. The dance is no longer popular but several of the Jerusarima melodies survive as adaptations on various instruments. Self delectative song with Chipendani bow.

  • Description: This form of open string bow is common to the Nguni people and is held near the lower end of the bow which is held upright. This player stopped the string to obtain his higher note by pinching the string between his first finger and his thumb nail of the left hand, the right hand striking the bow about 10" - 12" from the node above his left hand. He produced a buzzing sound on the string by keeping his thumb nail close to the vibrating string. The closed note by contrast is clear. Topical song with Ligubu bow.

Some time ago a rabbit and a man went together to get Matutungwe fruit to eat. While they were eating they saw a python and it wound itself round the man. The man begged the rabbit to go and get help. The rabbit replied, "You help yourself" because when we rabbits climb a tree we go with a knife to cut anything that entangles us. The man asked the rabbit again "Please rabbit help me". So the rabbit said, "just you sing this song and you will be free". So the man sang the song and escaped from the python. The customary reply during the story is "Go-gogodera andi sinjo." Story and song.

  • Description: The dance is performed only at night by young men, the pricipal dancers themselves dancing naked, some with special masks called Nyau in the shape of an antelope, an elephant, and a lion, while some walk on stilts. The larger masks are usually carried by two men. Some observers have said that the dance is connected with fertility rites. Only males are permitted to participate and women can only observe from a distance. The dance, they say is usually performed on bright moonlight nights. The gist of the song appears to refer to a familiar story which is told and sung in the district. "Rabbit is the chief of the court (of animals) Hopping, hopping. The rabbit was elected to be the chief." Dance song for Nyau dance with rhythmic clapping and struck iron (-12.16-).

  • Description: There was once a time of drought and all the animals gathered together to find water. They deceided that rabbit would be able to find water for them. The rabbit told them that water would be found under the Msendekere tree. So the animals all gathered there and were all digging together. Eventually they got down to the water. They were all delighted and in gratitude they said they should make Kalulu the Rabbit their chief. "A big chief like Kachere himself", a chief over a large district. So rabbit was made chief and all the animals joined in a song of praise, each one making his own kind of noise. The lion roared, the hyenas laughed, the snakes hissed, the cattle lowed, the crocodile grunted, the zebra brayed, the elephant trumpeted and the sheep bleated. They all joined together in a heavy voice of praise. Nthano story song with guitar.

  • Description: The Kamango drum is the Chief's drum and is used when a new chief is declared. It is used exclusively for the chief. There is nothing to tell the uninitiated that it was a special drum as it is of the usual shape, if slightly larger than most. The drum was 4.3 inches tall and 17 inches across the head, goblet shaped. Footed Kamango Drum.
