Lions (Panthera leo), spotted hyaenas (Crocuta crocuta) and leopards (Panthera pardus) are the three largest African carnivores and have the greatest potential for intra-guild competition, particularly where space is limited.Aim To investigate the spatio-temporal partitioning between lions, spotted hyaenas and leopards in a small (~75 000 ha), enclosed nature reserve, Madikwe Game Reserve (Madikwe), South Africa.Methods We deployed 110 camera traps (baited n = 55 and unbaited n = 55) across Madikwe from 26 August 2019 until 6 May 2020. Von Mises kernel density plots were used to investigate daily temporal partitioning among the three species. A multiple-species, single-season occupancy model was used to investigate daily space use patterns.Key results We found both temporal and spatial exclusion between lions and spotted hyaenas on Madikwe. However, no evidence was found of spatio-temporal partitioning between lions and leopards, and spotted hyaenas and leopards.Conclusions Exploitative and interference competition on Madikwe might be high enough to warrant spatio-temporal partitioning between lions and spotted hyaenas to avoid the negative effects of intra-guild competition. Contrastingly, patterns observed between leopards and both lions and spotted hyaenas preclude the possibility of top-down control by superior carnivores.Implication These findings call for an adaptive management approach, where both carnivore and prey species compositions are constantly monitored. Management strategies such as these will allow for the conservation of valuable resources (i.e. prey species) to ensure the persistence of large carnivore populations across African ecosystems.

Machine learning offers a helpful tool with which to detect cyber attacks. However, it is impossible to deploy a machine-learning algorithm to detect attacks in a non-centralized network. Software Defined Networks (SDNs) offer a centralized view of a network, allowing machine learning algorithms to detect malicious activity within a network. The InSDN dataset is a recently-released dataset that contains a set of sniffed packets within a virtual SDN. These sniffed packets correspond to various attacks, including DDoS attacks, Probing and Password-Guessing, among others. This study aims to evaluate various machine learning models against this new dataset. Specifically, we aim to evaluate their classification ability and runtimes when trained on fewer features. The machine learning models tested include a Neural Network, Support Vector Machine, Random Forest, Multilayer Perceptron, Logistic Regression, and K-Nearest Neighbours. Cluster-based algorithms such as the K-Nearest Neighbour and Random Forest proved to be the best performers. Linear-based algorithms such as the Multilayer Perceptron performed the worst. This suggests a good level of clustering in the top few features with little space for linear separability. The reduction of features significantly reduced training time, particularly in the better-performing models.

The mechanism of aluminum corrosion inhibition revealed predominantly anodic character for rGONS and predominantly cathodic character for 1, 2, and conjugates with rGONS . The polarization technique gave inhibition efficiency values of 96.5% and 96.9% respectively for 1 and 2, which increased in the presence of rGONS to 97.4% and 98.1%, respectively, for the highest concentrations of 1 and 2. Scanning electron microscopy revealed effective metal surface protection by the inhibitors by formation of protective films.

The conjugates generated high singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ) in water (1% DMSO, used for PACT studies) with values of 0.46 and 0.47 for 3a@DNDs and 4a@DNDs, respectively. Hence, they were tested for PACT against biofilms of S. aureus and E. coli, as well as their planktonic cells. The quaternized Pcs alone 3a and 4a as well as their nanoconjugates 3a@DNDs and 4a@DNDs were effective PACT agents with log10 CFU > 9 for E. coli and S. aureus. The quaternized derivatives were found to have higher ability to completely suppress both planktonic and biofilms of S. aureus and E. coli in vitro. Therefore, they could be used as appropriate photosensitive agents.

Typically, following molecular dynamic simulations designed to investigate intrinsic and extrinsic protein perturbations (for instance induced by allosteric and orthosteric ligands, protein binding, temperature, pH and mutations), this selection of tools can be used to further describe protein dynamics. This may lead to the discovery of key residues involved in biological processes, such as drug resistance. The server simplifies the set-up required for running these tools and visualizing their results. Several scripts from the tool suites were updated and new ones were also added and integrated with 2D/3D visualization via the web interface. An embedded work-flow, integrated documentation and visualization tools shorten the number of steps to follow, starting from calculations to result visualization. The Django-powered web server (available at https://mdmtaskweb.rubi.ru.ac.za/) is compatible with all major web browsers. - Description: The current diabetes management systems require collecting blood samples via an invasive and painful finger pricking leading to the formation of callus, scarring and loss of sensibility to patients due to continuous monitoring. Therefore, a non-invasive and painless method of determining glucose levels would be desirable to diabetes patients who need constant monitoring. Saliva glucose measurement is a non-invasive alternative for diabetes management. A highly sensitive, stable, and selective non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor that can accurately quantify saliva glucose is required. A single-walled carbon nanotube/reduced graphene oxide/cobalt phthalocyanines nanohybrid modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE-SWCNT/rGO/CoPc) has been fabricated for the non-enzymatic determination of glucose in human saliva. The SWCNT/rGO/CoPc was characterized using various spectroscopic, microscopic, and electrochemical techniques. The synergistic effect between SWCNT, rGO, and CoPc facilitated excellent electron transfer process that improved the sensor sensitivity. The GCE-SWCNT/rGO/CoPc sensor exhibited two linear responses in the 0.30 μM to 0.50 mM and 0.50–5.0 mM glucose concentration ranges, and the detection limit was 0.12 μM. The sensor had an excellent saliva glucose detection sensitivity of 992.4 μA·mM−1·cm−2 and high specificity for glucose in the presence of other coexisting analytes. In addition, it showed good storage stability, reusability, and a fast response time of about 1.2 s. The GCE-SWCNT/rGO/CoPc nanohybrid electrode showed excellent potential for developing accurate, non-invasive, and painless glucose sensing.

A single-walled carbon nanotube/reduced graphene oxide/cobalt phthalocyanines nanohybrid modified glassy carbon electrode (GCE-SWCNT/rGO/CoPc) has been fabricated for the non-enzymatic determination of glucose in human saliva. The SWCNT/rGO/CoPc was characterized using various spectroscopic, microscopic, and electrochemical techniques. The synergistic effect between SWCNT, rGO, and CoPc facilitated excellent electron transfer process that improved the sensor sensitivity. The GCE-SWCNT/rGO/CoPc sensor exhibited two linear responses in the 0.30 μM to 0.50 mM and 0.50–5.0 mM glucose concentration ranges, and the detection limit was 0.12 μM. The sensor had an excellent saliva glucose detection sensitivity of 992.4 μA·mM−1·cm−2 and high specificity for glucose in the presence of other coexisting analytes. In addition, it showed good storage stability, reusability, and a fast response time of about 1.2 s. The GCE-SWCNT/rGO/CoPc nanohybrid electrode showed excellent potential for developing accurate, non-invasive, and painless glucose sensing.

The P(V) complexes and their AuNP conjugates display more favorable PDT activity properties upon illumination with a Thorlabs 625 nm light-emitting diode (288 J cm−2) with phototoxicity indices > 18.5 and 20.8, respectively, for the meso-thienyl-substituted 2b-AuNP and 2c-AuNP conjugates. Optical spectroscopy analyses demonstrate that this can be attributed to there being significantly less aggregation due to the presence of two trans-hydroxy axial ligands.

Biotic homogenization is the increased similarity of biota as a result of introductions of non-native species. The study quantified the effect of P. stratiotes, and its biological control through the introduction of the weevil, Neohydronomus affinis on recruitment of benthic macroinvertebrates to artificial substrates. Mats of P. stratiotes altered the community composition and reduced diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates in comparison to an uninvaded control. However, reduction in percentage cover of the weed through biological control resulted in a significant increase in dissolved oxygen, and recovery of the benthic macroinvertebrate community that was comparable to the uninvaded state. This highlights the process of homogenization by an invasive macrophyte, providing a justification for sustained ecological and restoration efforts in the biological control of P. stratiotes where this plant is problematic.

- Description: In the geological record, fossil phosphatic stromatolites date back to the Great Oxidation Event in the Paleoproterozoic, but living phosphatic stromatolites have not been described previously. Here, we report on cyanobacterial stromatolites in a supratidal freshwater environment at Cape Recife, South African southern coast, precipitating Ca carbonate alternating with episodes of Ca phosphate deposition. In their structure and composition, the living stromatolites from Cape Recife closely resemble their fossilized analogues, showing phosphatic zonation, microbial casts, tunnel structures and phosphatic crusts of biogenic origin. The microbial communities appear to be also similar to those proposed to have formed fossil phosphatic stromatolites. Phosphatic domains in the material from Cape Recife are spatially and texturally associated with carbonate precipitates, but form distinct entities separated by sharp boundaries. Electron Probe Micro-Analysis shows that Ca/P ratios and the overall chemical compositions of phosphatic precipitates are in the range of octacalcium phosphate, amorphous tricalcium phosphate and apatite. The coincidence in time of the emergence of phosphatic stromatolites in the fossil record with a major episode of atmospheric oxidation led to the assumption that at times of increased oxygen release the underlying increased biological production may have been linked to elevated phosphorus availability. The stromatolites at Cape Recife, however, form in an environment where ambient phosphorus concentrations do not exceed 0.28μM, one to two orders of magnitude below the previously predicted minimum thresh-old of >5 μM for biogenic phosphate precipitation in paleo-systems. Accordingly, we contest the previously proposed suitability of phosphatic stromatolites as a proxy for high ambient phosphate concentrations in supratidal to shallow ocean settings in earth history.

Working at landscape-level requires collaboration between diverse landscape stakeholders. In this study, we partnered with local stewardship practitioners across six cases in South Africa to investigate how they facilitate collaboration towards social-ecological sustainability outcomes. We found that practitioners facilitate collaboration among stakeholders by operating as relational hubs in the landscape. Through these hubs, they build new inter-personal relationships among stakeholders, creating social networks which enable stewardship practice. The hubs deepen human-nature relationships by creating enabling conditions for stewards to put stewardship ethics into action. Drawing on insights from these cases, we call for a relational approach to landscape stewardship which focuses on human-to-human and human-to-nature relationships. Moreover, we argue that landscape stewardship initiatives need to re-focus stewardship on stewards, recognizing them as key agents of change in addressing the conflict between agriculture and conservation inherent in many landscapes.

Nassella neesiana is not listed in NEM:BA but is naturalized in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape and Free State provinces. Research conducted in the 1970s and 1980s led to vigorous government-funded awareness and control campaigns which ended in 2000. No research on Nassella distribution or control has been undertaken since then. Despite this hiatus, Nassella remains a dangerous genus in southern Africa, given the serious impacts of these species in similar social-ecological systems in Australia and New Zealand. This paper presents a synthesis of available information about Nassella invasions in South Africa and identifies research gaps. It specifically addresses these questions: What identification issues exist? What is the current spatial distribution of Nassella? What is the autecology of the genus? What are the social-ecological impacts of Nassella? What control measures are currently applied and what are their strengths and limitations? What do we know about Nassella distribution and its response to climate change? This paper highlights many knowledge gaps about Nassella, such as the species’ current distribution range, field identification and detection difficulties, and the uncoordinated control efforts that require urgent research to inform an effective management response.

Electrocatalytic activity of a push pull Co (II) phthalocyanine in the presence of graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots

- Description: This work reports for the first time on the use of a conjugate of graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (gCNQDs) with a push-pull asymmetrical cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) for electrochemical sensing. The nanocomposite is immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface for the use in l-cysteine electrocatalysis. The nanocomposites were characterized using techniques such as X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. The nanocomposites were immobilized by the drop-dry method, sequentially or when premixed in solution. Good electrocatalytic oxidation of l-cysteine was observed, especially by the sequentially modified electrode surface, with the CoPc on top of gCNQDs. The sensitivity was determined as 3.5 μA.mM-1 and the limit of detection (LoD) as 101.3 μM for GCE-gCNQDs, 0.65 μA.mM-1 and 0.96 μM for GCE-CoPc, 23.41 μA.mM-1 and 0.41 μM for gCNQDs-CoPc (premixed) and 100.5 μA.mM-1 and 0.02 μM for gCNQDs-CoPc (sequential). - Description: This work reports for the first time on the use of a conjugate of graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (gCNQDs) with a push-pull asymmetrical cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) for electrochemical sensing. The nanocomposite is immobilized on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface for the use in l-cysteine electrocatalysis. The nanocomposites were characterized using techniques such as X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, UV-vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, Raman spectroscopy and electrochemical methods. The nanocomposites were immobilized by the drop-dry method, sequentially or when premixed in solution. Good electrocatalytic oxidation of l-cysteine was observed, especially by the sequentially modified electrode surface, with the CoPc on top of gCNQDs. The sensitivity was determined as 3.5 μA.mM-1 and the limit of detection (LoD) as 101.3 μM for GCE-gCNQDs, 0.65 μA.mM-1 and 0.96 μM for GCE-CoPc, 23.41 μA.mM-1 and 0.41 μM for gCNQDs-CoPc (premixed) and 100.5 μA.mM-1 and 0.02 μM for gCNQDs-CoPc (sequential). From academic to political rigour: Insights from the ‘Tarot’ of transgressive research

- Description: The role of science and knowledge production is at a crossroads, as societal transformation calls for challenging dominant forms of knowledge production that have contributed to marginalizing other ways of knowing. This presents a challenge to mainstream science and invites a deeper reflection on our roles as scientists and exploration of alternative engaged, post-normal and activist approaches to research. This paper examines the diverse ways researchers are meeting this challenge. Employing the device of the Tarot deck we describe seven “characters” to illustrate the variety of roles and approaches that trans-disciplinary, transformative, transgressive and activist researchers are engaging in. These characters are used to introduce and develop the concept of political rigour as a means of expanded academic rigour in new emancipatory scientific paradigms. We demonstrate how these Tarot characters can be used as an activity for collective and personal reflexivity and propose ten principles that frequently emerge in a ‘political’ peer review process. We argue that the insights emerging from these strands of radical, critical, engaged and applied forms of scholarship, can significantly improve the understanding of what a “transformative knowledge paradigm” may look like in practice and how it can be mobilized for social change and environmental justice.

The sequencing of mitochondrial DNA and interbreeding experiments have since confirmed the cryptic species to be separate species. The Brazilian population remains E. catarinensis while the Peruvian population is now E. eichhorniae. This paper assessed the mating behaviour of both species, to investigate behavioural traits that have resulted in reproductive isolation, which could have led to speciation. Mating choices in a form of no-choice, bi-choice and multi-choice tests were conducted within and between species in a 3:1, 2:1 and 1:1 sex ratio. The E. eichhorniae pair had more single and multiple copula incidences, higher average total copula duration and higher copula latency while the E.catarinensis♀×E.eichhorniae♂ pair had less single and multiple copula incidences, lower average total copula duration and lower copula latency. When the E.eichhorniae♀ and E.catarinensis♂ were given their respective choices, they only mated with conspecifics. However, when E.eichhorniae♀ are crossed with E.catarinensis♂ they do not produce offspring. These results suggest that interbreeding will be limited in South Africa.

Testing the thermal limits of Eccritotarsus catarinensis: a case of thermal plasticity

The success of biocontrol initiatives against the weed varies nation-wide, but control remains generally unattainable in higher altitude, temperate regions. Eccritotarsus catarinensis (Hemiptera: Miridae) is a biocontrol agent of water hyacinth that was first released in South Africa in 1996. By 2011, it was established at over 30 sites across the country. These include the Kubusi River, a site with a temperate climate where agent establishment and persistence was unexpected. This study compared the critical thermal limits of the Kubusi River insect population with a laboratory-reared culture to determine whether any physiological plasticity was evident that could account for its unexpected establishment. There were no significant differences in critical thermal maxima (CTmax) or minima (CTmin) between sexes, while the effect of rate of temperature change on the thermal parameters in the experiments had a significant impact in some trials. Both CTmax and CTmin differed significantly between the two populations, with the field individuals tolerating significantly lower temperatures (CTmin: −0.3°C ± 0.063 [SE], CTmax: 42.8°C ± 0.155 [SE]) than those maintained in the laboratory (CTmin: 1.1°C ± 0.054 [SE], CTmax: 44.9°C ± 0.196 [SE]). Acclimation of each population to the environmental conditions typical of the other for a five-day period illustrated that short-term acclimation accounted for some, but not all of the variation between their lower thermal limits. This study provides evidence for the first cold-adapted strain of E. catarinensis in the field, with potential value for introduction into other colder regions where water hyacinth control is currently unattainable.
