Municipal demarcation: an exploration of ethnic conflict and violence in the 2015 Malamulele and 2016 Vuwani protests

- Description: In 2015, communities in Malamulele, located in the Vhembe District of Limpopo Province, South Africa, protested against the Thulamela Local Government Municipality, citing inadequate service delivery and favouritism toward Venda-speaking areas. The protesters demanded the establishment of a new municipality for Tsonga-speaking residents, disrupting daily life through road blockades and shutdowns of schools, transportation, and commercial activities. In response, the government demarcated the Thulamela Municipality and created the Collins Chabane Local Government Municipality, which included Vuwani and other Venda-speaking communities. However, this inclusion sparked violent protests in Vuwani in 2016, fueled by claims of insufficient consultation and a desire to remain within the Makhado Local Government Municipality. This study utilised qualitative research methods, specifically semi-structured interviews, to capture the experiences and perspectives of participants from Vuwani and Malamulele. It applied conflict and territory theories to analyse the underlying issues. The findings reveal that colonial policies of divide and rule, along with apartheid-era Bantustan policies, significantly influenced these protests. The study underscores the importance of public participation in community matters, highlighting the unequal provision of services among different groups and emphasising the need for reconciliation. The protests were deeply rooted in the legacy of colonial and apartheid histories and cannot be understood in isolation from these historical contexts and their enduring impacts. This research addresses a gap in the academic literature by exploring the ethnic dynamics and sequence of events in the 2015 Malamulele and 2016 Vuwani protests. - Description: The Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF) is a world-class resource of manganese ore hosted by the Paleoproterozoic Hotazel banded iron formation. KMF ores are categorised into two main types, i.e., low-grade, carbonate rich, braunitic ore (Mn≤40wt%) and carbonate-free, high-grade, Ca-braunite+hausmannite ore (Mn≥44wt%). High-grade ores, also known as Wessels type from the homonymous mine in the northernmost KMF, are thought to have formed from variable degrees of hydrothermal carbonate and silica leaching from a low-grade ore precursor, termed Mamatwan-type after the homonymous mine in the southernmost KMF. This project aims to conduct a mineralogical and mineral-chemical study of representative manganese ore samples from a suite of drillcores intersecting both the upper and the lower layers in the northern KMF, covering the areas of Wessels, N’chwaning and Gloria mines. Petrographically, the high-grade Mn ore displays great variability in three-dimensional space. Texturally, the ores exhibit a great variety of textures which may or may not show preservation of the laminated and ovoidal textures that typify the postulated low-grade protore. There is also significant variation in the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of the high-grade Mn ores both vertically and laterally. Vertical variation includes, probably for the first time, variability between the upper and lower ore layers within individual drillcores of the Hotazel sequence. Mineralogically, the ores contain variable modal abundances of the ore-forming minerals braunite (I, II, “new”) and hausmannite, and much less so of bixbyite, marokite and manganite. Common accessories include andradite, barite and low-Mn carbonate minerals. Chemically, the dominant ore minerals braunite and hausmannite, contain Fe up to 22 and 15wt% respectively, which accounts for the bulk of the iron contained in the ores. Braunite compositions also exhibit a large range with respect to their ratio of Ca/Si. Mineral-specific trace element concentrations for the same minerals measured by LA-ICP-MS, reveal generally large variations from one element to the other. When normalized against the trace element composition of bulk low-grade precursor ore, strong enrichments are recorded for both hausmannite and braunite in selected alkali/alkali earth elements, transition metals and lanthanides, such as Sc, Co, Zn, Cu, Pb, La, and Ce. These are akin to enrichments recorded in average high-grade ore. Although there is also no obvious relationship between Fe content in both hausmannite and braunite and their trace element abundances, the drillcore that captures high-grade ore with the highest trace element concentrations appears to be located most proximal to a major fault. Results collectively suggest that high-grade Mn ores of the KMF have undergone a complex hydrothermal history with a clear and significant metasomatic addition of trace elements into ore-forming minerals. First order trends in the mineralogical and mineral-chemical distribution of the ores in space, suggest hausmannite-dominated ores near the Hotazel suboutcrop, and an apparent decline in ore quality with braunite II-andradite-barite-calcite ores as the major graben fault is approached in a southwesterly direction. The latter trend appears to be at odds with prevailing fault-controlled alteration models. I am motivated by writers who use what I would term reflective expressionism to evoke empathy by tapping into innate, universal emotions. In particular Tiff Holland’s vivid telling of family in the novella Betty Superman where she navigates complex relationships, and bell hooks’ memoirs Bone Black: Memories of Girlhood written as poetic vignettes in fluctuating points of view to draw attention to the intricacies of social structures. Joanna Walsh’s Vertigo has strongly influenced my approach to writing through her compelling imagery and use of motif in fragmented prose that delves into the psyche of her characters. I am also inspired by Lidia Yuknavitch’s visceral use of language, identifying with her invitation: “You deserve to sit at the table. The effects of aspect, directional heating and depth on bedrock temperatures and the potential relationship with thermal fatigue weathering

- Description: Geomorphological weathering processes and their relationship with temperature fluctuations are frequently researched. These research efforts are mostly restricted to surface conditions where soils, loose-lying rocks or rock outcrops are assessed. However, there is a shortcoming in the understanding of the thermal properties in a rock mass, particularly in the upper metres below the surface, as this has not been investigated or researched in any great detail. The research reported here is unique in this regard as it exploited the use of rotary core boreholes in tillite bedrock in the Karoo (Western Cape, South Africa) which were drilled as part of an invasive materials investigation for a proposed new hard rock quarry to supply road stone. Temperature data were captured on a bedrock ridge hosting tillite outcrop with a strong east to west orientation. The site work was done in two separate phases. The initial phase of research saw data being captured for one year on two aspects (i.e. north and south) at a depth of 0.3 m. This was followed by the second (more detailed) phase, where three aspects were assessed (i.e. north, south and a flat crest), but at depths of 0.3 m, 2.0 m and 6.0 m, totalling nine data acquisition points. The second investigation phase gathered data for seven months. Supplementary weather data were also captured for the site. Subsequent data analyses revealed that there is much to learn about the thermal behaviour of bedrock in the upper metres below the surface, and that the temperature properties or thermal regimes are not as simple as often assumed. Temperature differences related to aspect are not only surficial, but are transmitted to underlying bedrock, and notable temperature differences were measurable to a depth of at least 6.0 m. Seasonal temperature fluctuations also have a pronounced effect on the rock mass temperatures and it was proven that deeper parts of the bedrock accumulate and dissipate heat at different (i.e. retarded) rates compared with shallower parts of the rock mass, creating suitable thermal conditions to induce thermal fatigue. Thermal properties were also proven to be non-linear. During analyses, the concept of temperature inversions was proven, whereby one part of the bedrock becomes hotter or cooler relative to another/adjacent part of the bedrock, compared with its earlier temperature state. It was argued that these temperature inversions may exacerbate thermal fatigue. This research proved that aspect (i.e. directional heating) and depth need to be considered when analysing thermal regimes in a rock mass, as these have a distinct influence. Episodes from the four selected isiXhosa drama books were identified. Upon identifying the episodes, they were categorised in to themes in order to highlight the representation of women in the books. This was done using a qualitative research method because it useful to be used in natural setting to understand meanings and social life. Many themes were identified in the four selected isiXhosa drama books. The dominating themes are women who are educated, employed and do not tolerate ill treatment. This shows that the authors in a way are paying attention to the events occurring post-1990 as some of these were not popular pre-1990. The study acknowledges that there is limited research conducted that analyses drama books from both male and female authors. - Description: The National Water Act (1998) opens the way for ordinary people to take part in water resource management (WRM). This is a significant move towards a more social orientation and away from an approach that focused almost exclusively on the technical aspects of WRM. This set of two books asks what a social orientation means in practice. Since the National Water Act became law in 1998, how have WRM practitioners involved people in the process of managing water? What have we learnt so far? And how can we use these lessons to move forward? The content of the books is based on research that looked in some depth at national and local participatory practice in South Africa, and also broadly at international trends. The research was conducted by three WRM practitioners and two researchers in the field of participatory approaches.
