An exploration into how Grade 3 Foundation Phase teachers implement differentiated instructional practices in their mathematics classrooms

- Description: Today’s teaching space is more diverse than before. As a result, differentiated instruction is considered helpful in supporting learner diversity. This teaching approach considers socio-cultural, multiple intelligences, and learning styles also termed learning preferences of learners. It is against this view that I wanted to investigate the implementation of differentiated instruction teaching practices in the Foundation Phase. This study explored differentiated teaching strategies and procedures in mathematics teaching, and I observed four Grade 3 teachers. The theoretical framework underlying this study was the theory of practice architectures. This study is located within an interpretivist paradigm within which I employed a case study research design. The collection of the data sets was through observations and semi-structured interviews. For an analysis of observations, I used a deductive approach. On the other hand, for the semi-structured interviews, I use an inductive approach to discover patterns and themes that I applied during the data analysis process. The validation process was done by giving interview transcripts and a summary of discussions to respondents to verify their responses and check for any misinterpretations. Rich data sets were analysed concerning the research questions, which were as follows: What are the current differentiated instruction teaching practices used by Grade 3 Mathematics teachers? How can the teachers’ differentiated instruction teaching practices be understood in terms of doings, sayings and relatings? How are differentiated instruction teaching practices made visible through the lens of the Theory of Practice Architecture? The findings from the study revealed that the use of learners’ everyday language influences their understanding of mathematics terminology. The study discovered that learners were more comfortable using English to make sense of mathematics terms instead of using isiXhosa, the Language of Learning and Teaching in the Foundation Phase. Additionally, linking learning to learners’ everyday English language enabled them to learn mathematics terms in a relaxed and non-threatening situation, while isiXhosa seemed to constrain learning. Further, the findings revealed that teachers were unclear about differentiated instruction. That was evident when they did not know the elements of differentiated instruction. The study aimed to explore how mental illness is perceived by the participants and thereafter explored the influence of culture and religion in coping with mental illness by the residents of the Eastern Cape. The study was quantitative in nature and adopted an exploratory-descriptive design. The researcher made use of a questionnaire as a research tool and QuestionPro was utilized as a platform. A convenience sampling technique was utilised. In ensuring rigour of the study, the researcher ensured maximal validity (accurate representation of the data) and reliability (ability to repeat the research procedure). Ethical principles have been adhered to as per the principles on the Belmont Report, to ensure safety of the participants and this includes anonymity, confidentiality and the right to withdraw from participation in the study. Data has been analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. A sample size of 101 participants from the general population of residents of the Eastern Cape completed the online survey. The results of the study revealed that the residents of the Eastern Cape have substantial knowledge pertaining the cause of mental illness and indicated both positive and negative attitudes towards the mentally ill and possess coping strategies to deal with a mental illness. In addition, the results show that there is a relation between religion/culture and coping with a mental illness by the participants of the study. The findings of this study emphasize the necessity of public education efforts that understand and respect people's cultural diversity, as well as teamwork among traditional and medical professionals. HEIs have always succeeded in the implementation of ICT tools for the facilitation of the process of teaching and learning; however, they have faced many challenges related to the utilisation of these tools. Digital learning is among the ICT tools considered by the majority of HEIs to be relevant at this age of digitisation. ICT has introduced a variety of tools, not only for teaching and learning environments, but also for socialisation. These tools include social media tools that are used to achieve different activities in response to the demands of society. In making a comparison between social media and pedagogical tools, there is a huge gap in the level of usage of the two. Social media is much more being used than digital learning and this brings major concerns because users seem to be more interested in social media tools to perform academic activities, than in digital learning. This study has explored the factors that could play a role in digital learning and social media usage in HEIs. The study employed quantitative research methods and a survey was developed and distributed to former university students. The purpose of the study was to formulate a checklist that will inform the factors that impact the use of digital learning in HEIs. Cannabidiol: extraction and purification using flow Chemistry

The current and main source of cannabidiol and other cannabinoids is from cannabis and hemp extractions. Current extraction methods involve the use of conventional solvent extraction, which employs the use of organic solvents, in some cases along with mechanical assistance from various equipment. Alternatively, another widely used extraction method is the use of supercritical extraction fluids (SC-CO2 being the most common). An alternative method, which uses chemical synthesis to derivatize cannabidiol to form an intermediate, which is crystalline and can easily be isolated from the extract; the crystalline intermediate can then be deprotected back to pure cannabidiol. In this research, we investigated and adapted the crystallisation method (originally employed by Adams) into continuous flow. In this research, hemp extracts and oilsrich in CBD were used as the source for cannabidiol. This synthesis was adapted into microreactors to synthesise the crystalline intermediate ester product (cannabidiol-3,5-bis-benzoate) which was subsequently reacted in a saponification ester hydrolysis to convert back and isolate pure CBD using continuous flow microreactor technology. Chapter one gives a comprehensive literature review and background on cannabidiol, along with its chemistry and pharmacological benefits in addition to a brief introduction to continuous flow technology with its advantages. Chapter two details the experimental procedures utilised for both batch and continuous flow syntheses. The continuous flow synthesis and subsequent hydrolysis of the ester intermediate, which shows the improvements in comparison to batch; giving higher product recovery (63% CBD), in shorter reaction times (2.5 min for CBD bis-benzoate; 30 min for CBD) is subsequently presented. This is expanded in chapter three with detailed discussions of the results attained during the continuous flow. As a result, learners are finding that science is not relevant to their everyday life experiences and hence are not motivated to learn it. This is compounded in part by the fact that the Namibian curriculum seems to be silent on how science teachers should include learners’ socio-cultural backgrounds, for example, local or indigenous knowledge in their teaching repertoires. It is against this background that in this study I explored how mobilising the cultural practice of a traditional blast furnace (mudukuto) as an approach enables and/or constrains learners’ motivation to learn science and make sense of the concept of malleability. This is a qualitative case study underpinned by a combination of interpretive and Ubuntu paradigms. It was carried out in a rural school in Namibia, Kavango West Region, where I am currently teaching. The participants in the study were grade 9 learners and one expert community member. Focus group interviews, participatory observation, learners’ reflections, and stimulated recall interviews were used to gather qualitative data. Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory was used as a theoretical framework and Ogunniyi`s Continuity Argumentative Theory (CAT) was used as analytical framework or lens to analyse the data. A thematic approach to analyse data was employed. That is, qualitative data were analysed inductively to come up with sub-themes and themes. The findings of the study revealed that the traditional furnace motivated the learners involved in this study to learn science and learners were able to extract science concepts on malleability from the traditional practice. The implication for this study is that when science is related to learners’ daily life or real-world experiences, they are enabled to bridge the gap from what they learn at home or in the community with school science. Investigating the Regeneration of Post-industrial landscapes: The Design of a Brick Manufacturing Facility at Dimbaza, Eastern Cape

- Description: This treatise was born out of a response to ecological concerns surrounding the abandoned post-industrial sites in Dimbaza, Eastern Cape. These sites are not only derelict and abandoned, but also highly contaminated, negatively impacting both natural and urban environments. In light of this, the treatise deals with the issue of regenerating one specific such site: the site of the former Dimbaza foundry (formerly the working foundry of Dimbaza Foundries (Pty) Ltd). This is undertaken with an emphasis on creating an ecologically sound and sustainable future and providing guidance on equitable systems that incorporate societal needs with the integrity of nature. The current derelict state of the industrial sector of Dimbaza provides the foundations for an investigation into an architectural intervention that is regenerative in nature. The Dimbaza foundry site, which is contaminated by large amounts of waste products from previous industrial activities, was chosen to exemplify this regenerative ethos. The proposed regenerative plan is twofold, whereby the buried industrial waste product is mined and subsequently used as an additive in the production of clay bricks. This brick manufacturing facility is seen as a temporary intervention, designed to remediate the contaminated land and restore the site to a productive landscape. Furthermore, by promoting value creation in each and every part of the system, one is able to minimise waste and the continual usage of raw materials. Research into the particulars of the mining and manufacturing processes facilitates an informed architectural intervention that contributes to the spatial economy and lends itself to permanence and ephemerality. Furthermore, through an understanding of the physical, spatial, and historic qualities, insights were drawn into the remediation of brownfields and future possibilities for the site. In other words, remembrance of what had come before, inspires the after. - Description: This treatise was born out of a response to ecological concerns surrounding the abandoned post-industrial sites in Dimbaza, Eastern Cape. These sites are not only derelict and abandoned, but also highly contaminated, negatively impacting both natural and urban environments. In light of this, the treatise deals with the issue of regenerating one specific such site: the site of the former Dimbaza foundry (formerly the working foundry of Dimbaza Foundries (Pty) Ltd). This is undertaken with an emphasis on creating an ecologically sound and sustainable future and providing guidance on equitable systems that incorporate societal needs with the integrity of nature. The current derelict state of the industrial sector of Dimbaza provides the foundations for an investigation into an architectural intervention that is regenerative in nature. The Dimbaza foundry site, which is contaminated by large amounts of waste products from previous industrial activities, was chosen to exemplify this regenerative ethos. The proposed regenerative plan is twofold, whereby the buried industrial waste product is mined and subsequently used as an additive in the production of clay bricks. This brick manufacturing facility is seen as a temporary intervention, designed to remediate the contaminated land and restore the site to a productive landscape. Furthermore, by promoting value creation in each and every part of the system, one is able to minimise waste and the continual usage of raw materials. Research into the particulars of the mining and manufacturing processes facilitates an informed architectural intervention that contributes to the spatial economy and lends itself to permanence and ephemerality. Furthermore, through an understanding of the physical, spatial, and historic qualities, insights were drawn into the remediation of brownfields and future possibilities for the site. In other words, remembrance of what had come before, inspires the after. The reprogramming or redevelopment of the architectural intervention plays an integral part in preventing a repeat of the repetitive industrial cycle of construction and destruction which adversely affects both the human and natural environment. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Engineering, the Built Environment, and Technology, 2020

Critique of the International Criminal Court's Approach to International Criminal Justice in Selected African Jurisdictions

- Description: In 2002, the requisite number of ratifications to the Rome Statute was met, the International Criminal Court (ICC) was subsequently born. Just 16 years into its existence, the court finds itself under threat from the sovereign countries that at one stage, expressed their desire to improve the fight against impunity through a permanent international criminal court. But what has caused this shift? The ICC has been criticised for being a pro-African prosecution forum, this inference is drawn from the demographical distribution of the cases before the ICC that puts a significant majority of cases in Africa whereas other possible jurisdictions with similar cases have been left untouched by the ICC until recently. This study seeks to provide an analysis of the relationship between African states and the ICC. The study will provide a historical perspective on the development of International Criminal Law leading to the establishment of the International Criminal Court. This is followed by an analysis of the relations of the ICC and African states through three case studies of Kenya, South Africa and Sudan. The study will go further to provide an analysis of challenges that the ICC has faced with dealing with cases before and finally seek to explore the possibility of an alternative forum to prosecute perpetrators of international crimes centred in the African continent. , Thesis (MA) -- Faculty of Humanities, Social Sciences and Law, 2020
