In their practices, dissent is both an existential crisis and a constitutive practice. Through small actions, they offer up new narratives. The notion of seeing care as a form of dissent is to simply reflect on the artistic practices that are integrated with or responsive to forms of political protest and dissent based on ethical care practices and what it means to align with those things that matter to us and distancing ourselves from those things that do not. The thesis explores the ethic of care, its possibilities as a dissenting approach, and provides a narrative description of five case studies that exhibit different expressions of care in contemporary art. By prioritising care, there is an educational interest in creating resources and themes for a politically engaged approach to artistic practice and the creation of art. This study also aims to shed light on the power of art as a tool for social and political commentary, and the role of artists as agents of change in society. The study focuses on how these artists use their art to challenge societal norms and political structures, embodying the concept of care as a form of resistance. It underscores the importance of understanding the context in which art is created and the messages it conveys, particularly in societies where freedom of expression may be constrained. The study further investigates how these elements are presented in different ways to show the different manifestations of care and dissent. Through semi-structured interviews, analysis of relevant texts, and a detailed visual analysis of selected works from the five artists, the situational approach was used to explore how meanings are negotiated. The vision-based R(2+1)D-18 model emerged as the top performer, achieving 90.64% accuracy on the unseen AUTSL dataset test split, closely followed by the pose-based Spatio- Temporal Graph Convolutional Network (ST-GCN) model with an accuracy of 89.95%. Furthermore, these models achieved comparable accuracies at a significantly lower computational demand. Notably, the pose-based approach demonstrates robust generalisation to substantial background and signer variation. Moreover, the pose-based approach demands significantly less computational power and training time than vision-based approaches. Movement ecology of a West African sciaenid fish, Argyrosomus coronus, in southern Angola

- Description: Argyrosomus coronus is a large sciaenid species with a primary distribution between Cape Frio, in Namibia, and Luanda, in Angola, where it exists as a panmictic stock. Early juveniles (< 300 mm TL) occur on muddy offshore substrata (50–80 m deep) and at one year of age they recruit into the inshore zone. Adults are thought to predominantly occur inshore. Spawning occurs in the species during late spring. The species is heavily targeted by the recreational, subsistence, artisanal and commercial fisheries as juveniles through to adults and there are signs of population decline with declines in catch per unit effort (CPUE) and maximum size. A basic understanding of their movement ecology has emerged from previous studies, based on conventional tagging (mark-recapture) and CPUE monitoring from a shore-based recreational fishery. Juveniles were thought to be resident, with larger fish undertaking long distance migration southward in the austral summer and returning during the austral winter. In addition to the fishery-related threats faced by the species, the southern Angolan region has been identified to be an ocean warming hotspot, and this has been linked to a southward distribution shift and the recent hybridisation of A. coronus with its congener A. inodorus, in Namibia. This study aims to expand the knowledge of the movement ecology of A. coronus and to interrogate our current understanding of the movement patterns of the species using passive acoustic telemetry. Passive acoustic receivers were deployed at three study sites, Flamingo, where all tagging occurred, which lies ~ 200 km north of the Angolan border with Namibia, is a relatively exposed stretch of coastline; Tombua Bay, which lies 30 km south of Flamingo, is a small, sheltered natural embayment; and Baia dos Tigres, which lies 100 km south of Tombua Bay, is a sheltered lagoon in the lee of an island ~ 10 km from the mainland. Tagging occurred in two batches, one year apart. In the first batch, sub-adults (n = 3) and adults (n = 17) were tagged and monitored for two years. In the second batch, juveniles (n = 7) and sub-adults (n = 3) were tagged and monitored for one year. The first objective of this thesis (Chapter 3) was to examine the spatio-temporal dynamics of A. coronus at a regional-level (across study sites, to investigate the prevalence of the longshore migration), and at a local-level (within a study site), and to categorise the movement behaviour of juveniles, sub-adults and adults. Traditional seasons were not used in this thesis, as the study region alternates between ‘warm’ periods (up to ~ 26 °C mean daily water temperature), when Angola Current water covers the area, and ‘cold’ periods (down to ~ 15 °C mean daily water temperature), when Benguela Current water covers the area. A high degree of residency of tagged fish to the Flamingo study site, where tagging was conducted, was found, with juveniles and sub-adults never being detected outside of the Flamingo study site. Five adults (29 %) were detected haphazardly for between one and 36 days at Tombua Bay, following which they were typically detected again at the Flamingo study site. No fish were ever detected at the southernmost site, Baia dos Tigres, suggesting that none migrated to Namibia. Within the Flamingo study site, adults were found to group at the inshore mid-region of the study site during ‘cold’ periods, dispersing again during ‘warm’ periods, when there was a concomitant offshore shift in their area use. This explained the absence of the species from catches in the shore-based recreational fishery during ‘warm’ periods. These results challenge previous migration hypotheses for the species. Therefore, longshore return migrations which were evident from previously conducted conventional tagging, are probably not the norm for the species, but likely occur at a low frequency. The species exhibited a high degree of residency to their tagging site, despite the drastic seasonal changes in water temperatures and station-keeping was the dominant behaviour across all life stages. The constrained area-use noted in this study, relative to the known distribution of the species, suggests that A. coronus exists as a metapopulation, consisting of a network of subpopulations interconnected by gene flow that is most likely facilitated during their pelagic egg and larval phase. The second objective of this thesis was to examine the group formation observed at the Flamingo study site during ‘cold’ periods (Chapter 4). While this grouping of individuals was found to be correlated with water temperature, it was unlikely to be a causal relationship, as the water temperature was not dissimilar to adjacent areas. The area where individuals were concentrated is known to frequently attract large shoals of their dominant prey, Sardinella aurita. While the timing of this group formation aligns with a pre-spawning period, no studies have assessed the existence of local spawning. A. coronus were, however, likely utilising an abundant prey source, during the important pre-spawning period, in order to build up energy reserves. Group formation is a common feature of sciaenids, but literature on the subject is restricted to spawning congregations. Fish are not only more vulnerable to capture during these periods but may also be disturbed during these potentially important social periods. The third objective of this thesis was to investigate the presence of sociality in the species (Chapter 5). Evidence for sociality during and outside the seasonal group formation was explored using network analyses. There was evidence for sociality, with several groups, characterized by co-locations among individuals, identified. While these groups were fluid through time, there was evidence of persistent sociality, with two individuals in particular being consistently co-located over the entire study period. Due to the persistent nature of sociality, group foraging is suggested as an explanation for this, with anecdotal evidence of coordinated hunting supporting this. Acoustic telemetry vastly improved the knowledge of the movement ecology of A. coronus. Despite their panmictic population genetic structure, they were found to be largely resident, likely occurring as a metapopulation across their distribution, with egg and larval dispersal likely the primary mechanism for maintaining panmixia. Evidence for sociality was also found, which was previously unexplored in the species. The persistent nature of social groupings throughout the year, suggests that it may be linked with group foraging and is supported by anecdotal evidence of coordinated hunting by the species. The trade and poverty nexus in South Africa: investigating the transmission mechanism and the associated challenges

- Description: International trade plays an essential role in economic development strategies. In literature, foreign trade is identified as a driver of economic growth. In recent times there has been an expansion in the scope of investigations around the role of international trade to include its links with poverty alleviation. Poverty alleviation is explicitly identified as the first goal on the 2030 agenda for sustainable development under the Sustainable Development Goals and implicitly defined in goal 10. International trade is seen as the engine behind achieving the goal. South Africa records excessive poverty and inequality levels by international standards for a middle-income country. The most recent Poverty Trends Report for 2006 - 2015 reports 55.5% of the population living in poverty. Inequality statistics reported a per capita expenditure Gini coefficient of 0.65 in 2015, evidence that the country has high levels of inequality. The country's severe poverty, unemployment, and inequality prompt policymakers to formulate developmental policies around the underlying structural challenges. Trade openness has increased since the end of the Apartheid era. Despite the increased trade openness, economic growth has been insufficient in reducing the high unemployment and poverty levels, presenting a challenge for economists, who argue that trade openness is pro-growth and pro-poor. In the South African case, the lack of change in the structural challenges of poverty, unemployment and inequality has raised concerns over whether the trade policy reforms made since 1994 interfere with development objectives. This study aims to investigate the impact of trade liberalisation on poverty, using the three channels, namely enterprise, distribution, and government that have been researched within the McCulloch, Winters and Cirera framework. Specifically, it investigates the linkages via the transmission mechanism in which trade affects poverty in South Africa by mapping the transmission mechanisms from trade liberalisation to poverty alleviation, whilst identifying the possible challenges to the transmission mechanisms and lastly, analysing the stylised facts around trade and poverty in South Africa. To answer the question of this study, quantitative data from National Income Dynamic Study (NIDS) was merged longitudinally and aggregated with the industry tariff data sourced from the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) statistics. A path analysis was undertaken to map the transmission mechanism, whilst descriptive statistics were used to identify the possible associated challenges. The results show that the most significant channel of transmission are the enterprise and distribution channel. Specifically, it investigates the linkages via the transmission mechanism in which trade affects poverty in South Africa by mapping the transmission mechanisms from trade liberalisation to poverty alleviation, whilst identifying the possible challenges to the transmission mechanisms and lastly, analysing the stylised facts around trade and poverty in South Africa. To answer the question of this study, quantitative data from National Income Dynamic Study (NIDS) was merged longitudinally and aggregated with the industry tariff data sourced from the World Trade Organisation (WTO) and United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) statistics. A path analysis was undertaken to map the transmission mechanism, whilst descriptive statistics were used to identify the possible associated challenges. The results show that the most significant channel of transmission are the enterprise and distribution channel. I used Shulman’s Pedagogical Content Knowledge as my theoretical framework in this study and the data sets were analysed using the five Topic-Specific Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TSPCK) components adapted from Mavhunga and Rollnick. The findings revealed that teachers demonstrated positive attitudes towards the use of the periodic table of elements when teaching the writing and balancing of chemical equations. However, challenges regarding inadequate materials that hindered the teaching and learning process were observed. Another finding of this study was that teachers used a variety of mediation tools such as prior knowledge and appropriate representations to enhance learning. However, during lesson observations, the findings revealed that there was an imbalance in the knowledge of using easily accessible resources as opposed to what teachers had indicated during the semi-structured interviews. Nonetheless, teachers’ group reflections influenced them to analyse and improve their lessons. The study thus recommends that there is a need for continuing professional development for chemistry teachers so that teachers can be afforded opportunities and spaces to share subject matter knowledge, pedagogical content knowledge as well as easily accessible resources that they can use to enhance teaching of chemistry in their classrooms. , Thesis (MEd) -- Faculty of Education, Education, 2021

Plant-fungal mutualism as a strategy for the bioremediation of hydrocarbon polluted soils

- Description: Inasmuch as coal remains the linchpin for the generation of electricity and liquid petroleum products in South Africa, hydrocarbon waste and coal discard will continue to pose a threat to the environment. Therefore, the onus is on the associated industries to develop and implement efficient and sustainable strategies to mitigate the negative impacts of energy generating activities on the environment. Most conventional efforts in this regard, although successful for soil repair and the initiation of vegetation, have been deemed unsustainable. In an effort to find a sustainable remediation strategy a novel technology termed “FungCoal” was conceptualized and patented as a strategy for the rehabilitation of open cast coal mines, carbonaceous-rich spoils and coal wastes. This biotechnology, which exploits plant-fungal mutualism to achieve effective biodegradation of coal on discard dumps and the breakdown of the carbonaceous component in spoils, promotes revegetation to facilitate rehabilitation of mining-disturbed land. However, one limiting factor of the FungCoal bioprocess is that it requires oxidized weathered coal, a highly complex and variable resource for use as a co-substrate, for growth and proliferation of the coal degrading microorganisms. To fully exploit the potential of plant-fungal mutualism and its interaction for use in the remediation of coal contaminated soils, this study investigated the proposed relationship between plant roots, root exudate and the coal degrading fungus “Aspergillus sp.” (previously Neosartorya fischeri) strain 84 in more detail, in an effort to gain further insight into the mechanisms underpinning plant-fungal mutualism as a strategy for re-vegetation of coal discard dumps and the rehabilitation of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil using the FungCoal approach. A pot-on-beaker (PoB) method was developed for the easy cultivation and collection of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS)-containing exudates from Zea mays L. (maize) and Abelmuschus esculentus (okra). Characterisation of the EPS material from these exudates was carried out using a combination of physicochemical and biochemical methods. The results from analysis of phenolics and indoles showed that exudates contain some form of indoles and phenolic compounds, although in little proportions, which may fulfil a signalling function, responsible for attracting soil microorganisms into the rhizosphere. Spectroscopic analysis of the exudates using FT-IR revealed vibrations corresponding to functional groups of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, and carboxylic acids. These compounds likely provide an easily accessible source of carbon to soil microorganisms and are also a better alternative to the poly-aromatics which are an inherent component locked-up in the supposed recalcitrant coal material. The results from biochemical analyses also revealed the presence of carbohydrate, proteins, lipids, and low amounts of α-amino-nitrogen in the EPS of maize and okra. These components of EPS are all essential for the stimulation of enzymatic activities in soil microorganisms and, which may in turn aid biodegradation. The action of the root EPS from maize was further tested on three coal-degrading fungal isolates identified as Aspergillus strain ECCN 84, Aspergillus strain ECCN 225 and Penicillium strain ECCN 243 for manganese peroxidase (MnP) and laccase (LAC) activities. The results revealed that the Aspergillus species, strains ECCN 84 and ECCN 225, showed with or without EPS, observable black halos surrounding each of the colonies after 7d incubation indicative of positive MnP activity, while no activity was observed for the Penicillium sp. strain ECCN 243. Analysis for LAC revealed little or no activity in any of the coal degrading fungi following addition of pulverized coal to the growth medium. Interestingly, the addition of EPS-containing exudate to the coal-containing medium resulted in increased LAC activity for all fungal isolates. This finding affirmed the positive contribution of EPS to extracellular LAC activity, purported as an important enzyme in the coal biodegradation process. Finally, the impact of plant-derived exudate on the colonisation and biodegradation of coal was investigated in situ using rhizoboxes, to simulate a coal environment, and was carried out for 16 weeks. Microscopic examination of coal samples after termination of the experiment showed fungal proliferation and attachment to coal particles. All of the rhizoboxes that contained plants had higher medium pH and EC, and the concentration of phenolics, indoles and humic acids was greater than that of control treatments. These observations indicated better rhizosphere colonisation, substrate biodegradation and humification. Therefore, root exudate appears to play a significant role in coordination of soil microorganisms within the rhizosphere and likely serves both as a scaffold for rhizospheric interactions by providing microorganisms with accessible carbon and as a likely ‘trigger’ for induction of coal-degrading enzymes such as fungal LAC for mobilisation of recalcitrant carbon. This study has shown that EPS exuded from roots of Zea mays together with coal degrading fungus Aspergillus strain ECCN 84 can alkalinise the coal substrate and facilitate introduction of oxygen, possibly as a result of increased laccase activity, and increase availability of nutrients (as indicated by higher EC) in a coal-polluted rhizosphere, to provide plants and their associated mycorrhizae and presumably other beneficial microorganisms a more mesic environment for sustained phytoremediation with enhanced rehabilitation potential.
