- Description: This study is aimed at being an overview and investigation of the behaviour and morphology of radio quiet (RQ) active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the radio and optical/near-infrared (NIR) bands. It is hoped that a concise description of the relation that exists between accretion activity and star formation (SF) will be achieved through utilization of multiwavelength astronomy analysis. This analysis includes the processing of data acquired from the MeerKAT International GHz Tiered Extragalactic Exploration survey (MIGHTEE), the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT), the Hyper Suprime Camera (HSC) mounted on the Subaru telescope and the VISTA telescope. In this thesis, several targets were observed using SALT spectroscopy, but a redshift of only one of them was obtained. Instagram and male body image: an in-depth study of perceptions surrounding Instagram-related body ideals amongst gym-going, male students at Rhodes University.

- Description: Guided by the disciplinary power and social comparison theories, this study sought to explore the perceptions of Instagram-related male body ideals amongst young, gym-going men enrolled at Rhodes University. Seven in-depth interviews were conducted, and the responses suggested that Instagram use shaped young men’s body-related perceptions in a variety of complex ways. The findings suggested that Instagram exposed users to a lean and muscular body ideal and that perceptions of this ideal were shaped by factors such as Instagram’s positivity bias, the age of users, and the exposure to the idealised bodies of fitness influencers. Furthermore, perceptions of Instagram’s male body ideal were influenced by context. Black South Africans that attended majority white high schools were more likely to conform to the male body ideals associated with their school environment. In such instances, individuals rejected the body norms associated with their ethnic backgrounds in lieu of striving for a lean and muscular body. Additionally, perceptions of body dissatisfaction were evident in cases where upward social comparisons were made with unrealistic male body ideals. Conformity to Instagram’s male body ideal also suggested that male users were subjected to a coercive form of power that resulted in their active participation in the reproduction of male body ideals. , Thesis (MSocSci) -- Faculty of Humanities, Sociology, 2024

- Description: The purpose of this study is to investigate and understand how specialists who are newly appointed team leaders in an automotive manufacturing organisation experience the transition from specialists to team leaders. The role of leading others in an organisation is linked to human resource leadership. The human resource is highlighted as a valuable resource as it is the only thinking resource in an organisation. It also influences cost and quality and it is central to the organisation's competitive advantage. Consequently, any interruptions or lack of effective management of the human resource will result in a loss of value that the human resource brings into the organisation since they maximise the use of all other resources. The role transitioning process takes place in three phases. These are the separation, transitioning and incorporation phases. In the separation phase, the transitioning individuals have difficulty detaching from their previous role; the individuals still having the urge to do the work for their subordinates instead of delegating illustrate this. In the transition phase, the individuals in the study experienced the anxiety of wanting to make the new role a success whilst experiencing a sense of lack of belonging due to not being in the familiar old role and not entrenched in the new role. In the incorporation phase, the transitioning individuals experience a sense of stability where they are comfortable acting in the new role. Problem: This study aims to answer the question of how newly appointed team leaders in an automotive manufacturing organisation experience role transition from specialists to team leaders Method: The study will be employing the qualitative thematic deductive method. The target population consists of team leaders who have transitioned into the team leader position in the past two years in different departments. The data was collected by way of face-to-face semistructured interviews with a sample size of seven participants. Data analysis was conducted with a method that is consistent with thematic analysis. 3 Key Findings: Individuals transitioning have urgencies to perform their previous roles in the early phase; during the transition phase, they have anxiety because they are not yet successful in the new role, and in the final phase, they have become comfortable with their new roles and their new identities. Implications: The study's outcome is to identify insights and resultant recommendations for non-leading specialists transitioning into roles where they have to lead others. The optimisation of transportation methods for abalone (Haliotis midae Linnaeus, 1758 (Mollusca: Gastropoda)) larvae

- Description: Sea ranching has been identified as a viable method for enhancing the natural stock of overexploited abalone (Haliotis midae). Currently, this process involves transporting live juvenile H. midae to the seeding site where they are released onto the reef however this is both costly and logistically problematic. Transportation of abalone larvae is another cost-effective option, as they are cheaper to produce and can be transported at high densities. A suitable larval transport method is required to minimise larval mortalities and stresses that might compromise settlement. A series of simulated experiments were conducted to optimise transportation systems of abalone (Haliotis midae) larvae. First, two potential transportation modes (Wet (W) and Dry (D) transportation) conducted at a cooler (14˚C) and average ambient (18˚C) temperatures with six replicates of each were compared with control treatments (six replicates) that were not subjected to transport, kept in water at 18˚C. Eighty hours post-initial settlement, the 14W treatment had significantly lower settlement (p=0.03) than the other three treatments (14D, 18W, 18D) and the Control. The Dry method was the prefered method to transport larvae as it is logistically simpler to employ. The second experiment investigated the effect of different stocking densities (200, 400 and 800 larvae cm-2) for the Dry method 18˚C over two transit periods (six and twelve hours) on post-transport settlement and post-settlement survival of H. midae larvae. Compared to the control, there was no difference in the number of settled larvae (p=0.368) and larvae still swimming (p=0.835) across all treatments. This suggested that H. midae larvae can be transported for twelve hours at 800 larvae cm-2 without compromising post-transport settlement or survival. This study’s results and recommendations can be used by abalone farms when there is a need to move abalone H. midae larvae between farms or to seeding sites for sea ranching.
