- Description: The syntheses of two zinc(II) phthalocyanines (ZnPcs) having either imidazole (ZnPc 1) or pyridiloxy (ZnPc 2) moieties as their macrocycle substituents are reported. Quaternization of the ZnPcs with methyl iodide afforded water soluble cationic phthalocyanines. The photophysical, photochemical properties and photodynamic therapy (PDT) activity of the ZnPcs were studied in solution. The fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime of ZnPc 1 were higher as compared to ZnPc 2. ZnPc 2 afforded higher triplet state (ΦT) and singlet oxygen quantum yields (ΦΔ) in comparison to ZnPc 1. The PDT activity of ZnPcs was investigated against human breast adenocarcinoma cells (MCF–7). The two compounds afforded a very minimal in vitro dark cytotoxicity with 85% viable cells at concentration ≤80 μM. On irradiation of the cells having the ZnPcs, ≥50% cell death was recorded for ZnPc 1 which was also evidenced by the cells photo–micrograph.

- Description: Critiques of the ‘relevance’ of Psychology in South Africa and Africa have been raging for a number of decades now. Recent debates about decolonising Psychology and what is meant by African Psychology have been rigorous and necessary. In this commentary, I argue that in order for Psychology to move beyond Euro-American-centric epistemology and practice, these efforts need to be supplemented with the grounded praxis of research and literature collation. The epistemological, empirical, and conceptual knowledges that have been generated within the South African, African, and Global South contexts need to be brought together in coherent forms. As with other analytical processes, the grounded praxis of collating knowledges around a particular topic or approach allows for fresh insights and for the transfer of knowledges generated in context. Gaps in current research may be identified, debates on particular issues strengthened, and practice potentially improved. Drawing on two examples – textbooks and systematic literature reviews – and from my and colleagues’ work in conducting these kinds of collation work, I argue that: textbook writers should use grounded methodologies to generate texts based on South African, African, and Global South research, with reference to research conducted in the Global North being peripheral at best; and systematic reviews enable the cross-fertilisation of ideas from other social science research where psychological research is sparse. Funders should consider funding collation efforts.

- Description: The metal-free (H2TPrOPhOPc), cobalt (CoTPrOPhOPc) and manganese (Mn(OAc)TPrOPhOPc) tetra propargyloxyphenoxy phthalocyanines were evaluated for their potential as optical limiting materials. The effect of the substituents and the central metal ions on the nonlinear optical properties was evaluated. The metal-free phthalocyanine exhibited better nonlinear optical properties when compared to the cobalt and manganese complexes owing to the metal ions quenching the excited state due to their half-filled d-orbitals. The nonlinear absorption coefficient (βeff, ×10−5 m MW−1) followed the trend of H2TPrOPhOPc > CoTPrOPhOPc > Mn(OAc)TPrOPhOPc. The values βeff (×10−5 m MW−1) using 532 nm Nd:YAG (560 nm monochromatic Ekspla) laser sources were 23.5 > 14.3 > 9.20 (14.4). The second-order nonlinear coefficient obtained using density functional theory calculations, the theoretical hyper-Rayleigh scattering (βHRS, ×10−28 esu), showed the decreasing trend for H2TPrOPhOPc (2.28) > CoTPrOPhOPc (2.10) > Mn(OAc)TPrOPhOPc (1.86). The 4-(propargyloxy)phenoxy substituents enhanced the optical limiting properties of the synthesized phthalocyanines.

- Description: This paper provides insights into learning orientations and approaches that encourage change and transformation on the path to achieving the 1.5 degree C target. This literature review of the climate change and education/learning interface positions relevant literature in a heuristic tool, and reveals different learning approaches to addressing climate change. We highlight that although traditional lines of departure for achieving climate targets are usually technocratic in nature, especially if a zero emissions pathway is aimed for, there is an increasing realisation that climate issues are complex, deeply intertwined with unsustainable development and cultural change, and require collective engagement. Through considering the 1.5 degree C target as a metaphor for the fundamental changes needed in society, we argue that a wide range of learning orientations, including more inclusive and transformative social learning approaches, are needed to address the colossal challenges facing society.

- Description: Photooxidations of bisphenol A and 4-chlorophenol were carried out in this study using two asymmetric indium(III) phthalocyanines photosensitizers: the first consisting of one quaternized 4-pyridyloxyl and no other substituents (complex 1) and the second containing three quaternized 4-pyridylsulfanyl units and one aminophenoxy (complex 3). The asymmetry of complex 3 is additionally caused by the presence of two linking atoms (O and S). The symmetrically substituted indium(III) phthalocyanine containing four quaternized 4-pyridyloxyl units (complex 2) was also studied. The complexes were embedded in electrospun polystyrene fiber for heterogeneous photocatalytic transformation of 4-chlorophenol and bisphenol A. When immobilized on electrospun fibers, complexes 1, 2 and 3 gave singlet oxygen values of 0.31, 0.39 and 0.50 in water, respectively. Complex 3 showed the best photocatalytic behavior with observed rate constants of 2.8 × 10−3 min−1 for bisphenol A and 3.8 × 10−3 min−1 for 4-chlorophenol.

- Description: Sulfur and nitrogen affinity for gold is utilized to self-assemble gold nanorods (AuNRs) on S, N doped or S/N co-doped graphene oxide nanosheets (SGONS/AuNRs, NGONS/AuNRs or SNGONS/AuNRs) for enhancement of the electrocatalytic activity of nanosized cobalt tetra aminophenoxy phthalocyanine (complex 1) towards hydrogen peroxide detection. Of the electrodes containing AuNRs, 1-SNGONS/AuNRs-GCE gave the lowest limits of detection (LOD) of 0.012 μM followed by 1-SGONS/AuNRs-GCE and 1-AuNRs-SNGONS(seq)-GCE both with LOD of 0.016 μM. This work shows that in the absence of GONS (when AuNRs are alone and in the presence of 1 in 1/AuNRs-GCE), unfavorable detection limits are obtained and that doping of GONS is important in improving LOD. 1-SNGONS/AuNRs-GCE showed concentration dependent mechanisms resulting in two adsorption Gibbs energies (ΔGo) of −18.55 kJ mol−1 and −17.35 kJ mol−1 at high and low concentrations, respectively.

- Description: Photophysical properties of quantum dots (QDs) such as their photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (QY), exciton lifetime and PL stability are important parameters used to unravel their chemical and physical characteristics. In this work, we have comparatively investigated the photophysical properties of a series of L-cysteine-capped non-alloyed (CdTe and CdSe) and alloyed (CdZnTe, CdSeS, CdSeTe and CdSeTeS) core QDs. Each of the QDs varied in their size and PL emission wavelength. We observe no physical relationship between the PL QY of the QDs and their PL stability. Based on the PL stability assessment, CdTe QDs with a high PL QY value of 88% exhibited poor PL stability while moderate PL stability was observed for CdZnTe (QY = 78%); CdSe (QY = 3%); and CdSeTe QDs (QY = ∼3%). Alloyed CdSeS (QY = ∼69%) and CdSeTeS (QY = 23%) QDs exhibited good PL stability and can serve as potential fluorophores for a wide range of chemical and biological applications. Generally, it is proposed that the structural nature of the QDs played a significant role in their overall photophysical properties. The information provided in this work will assist in the selection of core QDs suitable for different applications.

- Description: GaCl 5,10,15,20-Tetra(1-pyrenyl)porphyrin (GaClTPyP) was successfully synthesised and encapsulated into Pluronic F127. The unmetallated 5,10,15,20-tetra(1-pyrenyl)porphyrin (H2TPyP) precursor was also encapsulated into Pluronic F127. The fluorescence quantum yield for GaClTPyP at 0.045 was lower than that of H2TPyP at 0.13 due to the heavy atom effect of Ga in the former which encourages intersystem crossing to the triplet state, lowering the fluorescence. Fluorescence quantum yield values increased when GaClTPyP or H2TPyP were encapsulated in Pluronic F127. GaClTPyP/Pluronic F127 showed higher values of the binding constant (Kb) as well as Stern-Volmer constant (Ksv) when compared to H2ClTPyP/Pluronic F127. It was determined from fluorescence quenching studies for GaClTPyP was located more in the inner core (hydrophobic) of Pluronic F127 and H2TPyP more on the outer region. Single oxygen quantum yields (Ф△) were determined to be 0.32 and 0.53 for GaClTPyP and GaClTPyP/Pluronic F127 respectively, an increase for the latter compared to the former.

- Description: Street trees are a common feature of urban nature, providing ecological, economic and social benefits. These public functions are highly dependent on specific design principles, including the composition and diversity of tree species within the urban forest. Consequently, it is important to understand the patterns and correlates of street tree distribution and diversity to assess benefit flows. This requires sampling across and within towns. This paper reports on an assessment of the distribution, composition and diversity of street trees between and within multiple South African towns, and ascertains the correlations between tree density and composition with social contexts. Randomly selected streets were sampled in the affluent, township and low cost housing suburbs of ten Eastern Cape towns. Sixty-nine out of 300 sampled transects had street trees, with 888 trees enumerated, spanning 97 species. Alien tree species accounted for 71% of all the enumerated trees while indigenous trees species accounted for 12%. Tree density and composition were significantly lower in smaller towns and those marginalised during the previous racially-based political regime. Within towns, the poor areas had fewer street trees, with many streets having none. Collaboration and constant communication between the various government departments involved in suburb development is crucial to ensure a more rigorous incorporation of green infrastructure into the building and development plans of new housing developments.

- Description: Many invasive alien species (IAS) are used by local communities for a variety of subsistence and income generating purposes. This frequently poses a conflict of interest for their removal due to forest conservation and biodiversity concerns. However, if local use can simultaneously check or control specific IAS, the conflict can be avoided and both development and forest conservation perspectives accommodated in the short to medium term. We examine this for Lantana camara invasion in southern India through assessment of the demand for and impacts of harvesting on this globally problematic IAS. We interviewed local artisans regarding their knowledge and quantities of Lantana used, along with forest surveys to estimate Lantana densities and size classes in harvested and unharvested sites, and lastly we undertook controlled cutting in moist and dry deciduous forests in both the wet and dry seasons to examine rate of regrowth and mortality. Over the entire study area the abundance of Lantana far outweighed local demand, but at small scales around villages, density and size classes were significantly reduced through harvesting. The controlled cutting experiment showed marked seasonal differences, with the most severe cutting intensity resulting in significant mortality when Lantana plants were cut in the wet season, but with limited effect when cut in the dry season. We conclude that promoting local use of IAS may be a feasible approach in controlling them and thereby limiting their impacts in forests.

- Description: Some of South Africa’s citrus export markets require mandatory postharvest cold treatment of citrus fruit as a phytosanitary risk mitigation treatment for Thaumatotibia leucotreta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae). An alternative to this may be partial cold treatment as one of the final steps in a systems approach to mitigate phytosanitary risk. Consequently, the efficacy of such partial cold treatments was evaluated. It was first determined that a 2C cold treatment was significantly more effective against fourth and fifth instars (the most cold-tolerant instars) than treatments at 3C and 4C for a duration of 18 d. Secondly, it was determined that 2C for 18 d and 1C for 16 d were similarly effective, but both treatments were significantly more effective than 1C for 14 d. Mean mortality of fourth and fifth instars treated with 2C for 18 d in seven replicates from four trials was 99.94%. Finally, it was determined that the inability of the majority of surviving larvae to develop to adulthood would further increase the efficacy of a 2C for 18 d treatment to 99.96%. Inclusion of reproductive nonviability of survivors increased mortality to 99.99%.

Complex 4 which is a tris phthalocyanine showed better nonlinear optical behavior in solution than 2 which is a bis phthalocyanine, both containing the same central metal, Ce. All the three molecules possess good optical limiting properties judged by the limiting threshold values which ranged from 0.04 to 0.09 J cm−2 with complex 5 embedded in thin films, showing the lowest value of 0.04 J cm−2. Furthermore, nonlinear optical processes responsible for reverse saturable absorption data are investigated.

- Description: A thermal reaction using a series of [14]tribenzotriphyrins(2.1.1) (TriPs, 1a–d) with Rh2(C8H12)Cl2 provides RhIII–TriP complexes (2a–d) in 40−52% yields. The complexes were characterized by mass spectrometry, UV-visible absorption and 1H NMR spectroscopy. Single crystal X-ray analysis reveals that 2b adopts a dome-shaped conformation. The rhodium(III) ion is coordinated by the three pyrrole nitrogen atoms, two chloride ions and the nitrogen atom of an acetonitrile (CH3CN) solvent molecule. The optical spectra can be assigned using Michl's perimeter model. The L and B bands of the 2a–d complexes lie at ca. 600 and 500 nm, respectively, and are markedly red shifted relative to those of 1a–d. A reversible one-electron oxidation and two reversible one-electron reductions are observed in the cyclic voltammograms of 2a–d in CH2Cl2. The redox potentials are consistent with the optical data and the relatively narrow HOMO–LUMO gaps that are predicted in DFT calculations. TD-DFT calculations have been used to assign a third intense spectral band at 375 nm to a higher energy π → π* transition of the [14]tribenzotriphyrin(2.1.1) π-system.

- Description: Zn octacarboxy phthalocyanine-reduced graphene oxide or graphene oxide conjugates were characterized by absorption spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermo gravimetric analysis and X-ray photon spectroscopy. The presence of reduced graphene oxide or graphene oxide resulted in the quenching (turn on) of Zn octacarboxy phthalocyanine fluorescence which can be explained by photoinduced electron transfer. Zn octacarboxy phthalocyaninereduced graphene oxide or graphene oxide conjugates “turned on” fluorescence showed a linear response to hydrogen peroxide hence their potential to be used as sensors. The nanoprobe developed showed high selectivity towards hydrogen peroxide in the presence of physiological interferences.

- Description: Electrocatalytic behavior of 4-(4,6-diaminopyrimidin-2-ylthio) phthalocyaninato cobalt(II) (CoPyPc) when mixed or covalently mixed to multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is reported. Infra-red spectroscopy was used to confirm amide linkage of the covalently linked nanocomposite. Rotating disk electrode (RDE) and cyclic (CV) voltammetry studies were used for the electrochemical characterization of the prepared phthalocyanine and MWCNT nanocomposite. The electrocatalytic effects of the nanocomposites of the cobalt phthalocyanine derivative were then investigated towards L-cysteine oxidation using both RDE and CV experiments, and the electrocatalytic performance of the covalently linked cobalt phthalocyanine-MWCNT was found to be superior over the mixed nanocomposite.
