- Description: Introduction: The female condom was introduced so many years after the male condom was introduced as an additional intervention to prevent sexually transmitted diseases and HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the study was to explore and describe the factors affecting female condom use in Buffalo City Metropolitan, Eastern Cape. Method: Quantitative descriptive and contextual research designs were used to enable the researcher to gain knowledge and insights on female condom use. The population of the study was sexually active women between ages of 15-49 years, living in Reeston community of Buffalo City Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province. Convenient sampling was used to recruit the respondents with 599-sample size and data was collected using questionnaires. Ethical considerations were considered throughout the study. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS version 22) and summarised using tables, graphs and descriptive statistics. Results: The findings of the study were minimal use of female condom because of poor marketing strategies towards female condoms despite the government intervention. The attitude of sexually active women towards female condom was positive, but minimal knowledge, inaccessibility and unavailability of female condoms hinder its use. Conclusion and Recommendation: The study recommended health education through campaigns and counselling about female condom use and their benefits to all age groups of women who are sexually active. The government and stakeholders should promote the condom uptake, accessibility and availability in every public place. Department of Health, Education should have empowered the community at large on how to promote female condom use and improve the distribution of both male/ female condoms to schools and public place.

In addressing this main goal, the research analysed how the South African tax systems deal with the income and expenses of Uber, Airbnb and their respective service providers. The research also investigated how South Africa could classify “sharing economy” workers and how this would affect the deductibility of the worker’s expenses. A brief analysis was made of the taxation of the “sharing economy” businesses in Australia and the United States of America. These countries have implemented measures to effectively deal with regulating the “sharing economy” businesses. An interpretative research approach was used to provide clarity on the matter. Documentary data used for the research consists of tax legislation, case law, textbooks, commentaries, journal articles and theses. The research concluded that the current taxation systems have loopholes that are allowing participants in the “sharing economy” to avoid paying tax in South Africa. The thesis recommends that the legislature could adopt certain measures applied in Australia and the United States of America to more effectively regulate “sharing economy” in South African and remedy the leakages the current tax systems suffer, causing SARS to lose potential revenue.

A comparative analysis of the determinants of South Africa bilateral trade flows with the European Union-Southern African development community economic partnership agreement and trade development and cooperation agreement

- Description: This research dissertation presents the impact of economic size, market size and exchange rate on South Africa’s trade flows with the European Union under the Trade Development and Cooperation Agreement (TDCA). The Big Five EU members are used to represent the EU trading bloc. The research also examines the effects of economic size, market size and ex-change rate on South African trade flows with members of the Southern African Customs Union and of the European Union in what is called the European Union-Southern African Development Community Economic Partnership Agreement (EU-SADC EPA). The research employs comparative analysis aimed at identifying the differences in the effects of market size, economic size and exchange rate on South Africa’s trade flows with these two trading blocs. The study exploits panel data on international trade of South Africa over the period 2000-’16. A gravity model of trade is used to identify the effect of these three variables on South Africa’s trade flows. The empirical analysis relies on a panel data econometrics framework as an estimation technique for the gravity model of trade between South Africa and the Big Five EU members. This shows the outcomes of the effects of economic size, market size and exchange rate on the trade flows of South Africa in the TDCA. The same technique is applied to estimate the effects of economic size, market size and exchange rate to trade flows of South Africa with the Big Five EU members as well as the other SACU members representing the SADC-EU EPA. In the panel data approach, three models are adopted. These are pooled OLS, fixed effects and random effects that can be estimated. The Hausman tests shows that the random effect is appropriate in the TDCA gravity function and the results indicate a positive relationship be-tween South Africa’s economic/market size and South Africa’s trade flows in the TDCA. In the EU-SADC EPA, the Hausman tests indicated that the fixed effect models are appropriate and the results show a positive relationship between economic size and market size with South Africa’s trade flows in the EU-SADC EPA. However, in the TDCA, the random effect model shows that exchange rate and the trading partner’s market size have a negative outcome on South Africa trade flows. The fixed effect model shows a negative relationship between the exchange rate and South Africa’s trade flows in the EU-SADC EPA. The results also show that it is better for South Africa to trade in the EU-SADC EPA than to remain in the TDCA. This is because the outcomes of economic and market size on South Africa’s trade flows are greater in the EU-SADC EPA than in the TDCA. On the other hand the negative effect of the exchange rate on South Africa’s trade flows is less in the EU-SADC EPA than in the TDCA. The research recommends that policy-makers select trading partners based on the sizes of their markets and economies.

Assessment of the Tyhume river health status using macroinvertebrates as indicators

- Description: Ten sampling sites were selected along the Tyhume River corresponding to the upper, mid and lower reaches of the River. In total 48 families were collected during the study. The study observed different types of macroinvertebrate taxa; very low tolerant to pollution (e.g Heptageniidae; Notonemouridae; Perlidae), moderately pollution-tolerant (e.g. Caenidae; Chlorolestidae; Tricorythidae) and very tolerant of polluted conditions (e.g. Chironomidae; Muscidae; Oligochaetae). Both univariate and multivariate analyses were done using PRIMER V6. Above Confluence (ABCON, Site 10) had the highest number (37) of species while Mtloko (MTLOK, Site 2) had the lowest number (24) (Chi-square = 0.87; p < 0.05). The highest number of individuals (4023) was recorded at Macfairlane (MACFA, Site 5) while the lowest number (1240) at Honeydale (HONEY, Site 8) (Chi-square = 0.00; p < 0.05). Margalef’s index indicated Above Confluence (ABCON, Site 10; 4.762), had the highest values of species richness while Mtloko (MTLOK, Site 2; 3.227) had the lowest values (Chi-square = 1; p < 0.05). Pielou's evenness index indicated that Gqumashe (GQUMA, Site 7) had the highest values (0.7137), while Macfairlane (MACFA; Site 5) had the lowest (0.5109) (chi-square = 1; p < 0.05). Shannon-Wiener diversity indices, the highest diversity index values (2.573) of macroinvertebrates was recorded at Honeydale (HONEY, Site 8), and the lowest (1.684) at Macfairlane (MACFA, Site 5) (chi-square = 1; p < 0.05). The ASPT Scores did not differ significantly (P > 0.05) across sites. No significant difference was observed in the ASPT scores across the 10 sites (F = 0.75; df = 9.60; P > 0.05). Site 4 had the highest mean ASPT Scores with mean of 7.6), whereas the lowest. Three biotopes types, namely: stone, vegetation, gravel-sand-mud, stone and vegetation being the dominant biotopes at the 10 sites. The cluster analyses showed that macroinvertebrates were dependent on biotope preference while stone biotope showing greater macroinvertebrate densities. Euclidean distance of site classification with respect to physico-chemical parameters showed very low stress value (0.01) implying that physico-chemical parameters influenced species distribution within each sampling site. The results also showed that good health conditions existed at the most upstream sites than the lower reaches of the river, thus, indicating impacts of pollution within the river.

Challenges facing guardians of children with autism spectrum disorder: a case study of Buffalo City and Chris Hani, Eastern Cape

- Description: This study, focused on challenges facing guardians of children with autism spectrum disorder at Buffalo City Metro and Lady Frere in Chris Hani District in the Eastern Cape (South Africa). The specific objectives of the study were: investigate the challenges faced by guardians of children with autism spectrum disorder; to investigate the extent of support offered by family members, community members, and local organisations; and to assess the support services offered by professionals working with families of children with autism spectrum disorder. The study was exploratory and qualitative in nature. Semi structured interviews consisting of seventeen (17) guardians of children with autism spectrum disorder were conducted. A once off session of eight (8) different professionals who served as focus group members was also conducted as method of data collection. The study discovered the following: Poor oversight by the legislature specifically on autism spectrum disorder interventions which is a constitutional obligation, compromises key services for the vulnerable groups; the derisory personnel to deliver effective interventions to guardians of children with autism spectrum disorder; lack of coping mechanisms by guardians to deal with the situation; lack of information about autism spectrum disorder especially in rural areas; the information on autism spectrum disorder is much better in urban setup than rural areas; poor stakeholder relations result in poor service rendition; and there is minimal or no support at all from family members and general public to families of children with autism spectrum disorder. The study made the following recommendations: Resources are still benefitted more by urban dwellers and rural areas still suffer such that Chris Hani still access services in Buffalo City, a need for vibrant integrated psychosocial interventions by various stakeholders with social service practitioners being part of the team; the Department of Education in Eastern Cape to recognize homeschooling and assist in registering homeschools as alternative centers for education to benefit children with autism spectrum disorder; the Eastern Cape Legislature to establish a vibrant monitoring and evaluation sector to measure the impact of site visits for various government departments; the government should scale up resource allocation for autism related interventions; the government should tackle and practically address the imbalances of the past as resources are still in urban areas such as specialized health care facilities; the policy development on management of autism spectrum disorder is paramount; and the general public and families must be empowered so that they can support the guardians of children with autism spectrum disorder.

Rose-scented geranium oil yield and composition as affected by leaf age, herbage drying and paclobutrazol

- Description: Essential oil of rose scented-geranium is highly versatile and this makes it a very important essential oil in aromatherapy, medicine and cosmetics as well as in flavouring of food and drinks for different industries. The value of the essential oil is directly related to the quality of the oil. Therefore, it is important that the geranium growers take good care of agricultural practices in the production of essential oils as it is a crucial step where oil quality and yield is either obtained or lost. Thus, growing conditions and harvesting time must be cautiously established and controlled including herbage drying to ensure optimum yields and high quality of rose-scented geranium oil. The geranium oil production industry in South Africa is still expanding and oil yield & quality variation is important. This study was undertaken to determine the effects of herbage drying and method, leaf age and paclobutrazol concentrations on oil yield and quality of rose-scented geranium. The responses of oil yield and quality to drying effect was conducted on plant materials which were harvested from the University of Fort Hare Research Farm and glasshouse in December 2014 and October 2015. To determine the effect of drying method on essential oil yield and composition of rose-scented geranium the harvested leaves were dried in direct sunlight (20-35℃) and in a shade conditions (25℃/room temperature). Essential oil was obtained by hydro-distillation using a Clevenger apparatus. The oil samples were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) at the Dohne Agricultural institute. The major components of the oil conducted under the shade method were Linalool (5.58 percent), Menthone (0.68 percent), Citronellol (36.14 percent), Geraniol (7.29 percent), CitronellylFormate (15.39 percent) and GeranylFormate (3.30 percent), whereas those that were sun dried comprised of Linalool (3.56percent), Menthone (0.76 percent), Citronellol (32.25 percent), Geraniol (6.49 percent), CitronellylFormate (14.84 percent) and GeranylFormate (3.15 percent). The analysis of variance showed that freshly dried herbage followed by shade drying is suitable for highest oil yield. In addition, changes in essential oil composition and oil yield with leaf age in rose-scented geranium (Pelargonium capitatum x P. radens cv. Rose) were investigated in a glasshouse of the University of Fort Hare, during January to April and April to August 2012. The plants were allowed to grow to about 12-leaf stage. From top to bottom, the leaves were put into five groups (each group comprising two successive leaves, Pairs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). Leaf growth (leaf fresh and dry mass), and essential oil yield and composition data were collected and compared. The results indicated that, leaf fresh and dry mass data were significantly lower in the top-most (youngest leaves) as compared with the rest of the leaf pairs harvested. Essential oil in the youngest leaves was colourless, but as the leaves advanced with age, the oil tended to have a blue-green colour. Oil content (on dry mass basis) from the top to bottom, for Leaf Pairs 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 were about 7.0, 4.9, 3.2, 2.4, 1.9 percent, respectively. Oil yield showed a significant increase in the second youngest pair of leaves and progressively declined, resulting in a significant lower yield in the oldest leaves. Leaf Pairs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, contributed about 19.3, 22.0, 17.71, 12.03 and 8.5 percent of the total yield per branch, respectively. Thus, shorter regrowth cycles would increase essential oil yield and quality of rose-scented geranium. The paclobutrazol experiment was conducted in a glasshouse at the University of Fort Hare, Alice. A randomized complete block design with four replications was applied. One month after cutting back of the plants, PBZ was applied at the rates of 0, 100, 200 and 300 mg/l on the regrowth and harvested at four months of age. Data, such as chlorophyll content, plant circumference, plant height, fresh and dry mass and oil composition, were determined. The results highlighted that with an increase in PBZ concentration, total herbage mass and plant height tended to decline (Esmaielpour et al., 2011). Thus, in most cases herbage fresh and dry weight of treated plants had lower weight than the control. Paclobutrazol significantly reduced canopy circumference. There was no significant difference (P< 0.05) in oil yield and composition. Furthermore, observations showed that plants receiving PBZ had a deep green colour although the chlorophyll data did not show a significant difference. These results clearly show that PBZ helps geranium plants with compact canopy, which would enable farmers to increase income by increasing planting density, reducing distillation cost of the herbage volume and mass without reducing oil yield per plant. The findings, add another dimension to practical use of this hormone for commercial cultivation.

- Description: Essential oil of rose scented-geranium is highly versatile and this makes it a very important essential oil in aromatherapy, medicine and cosmetics as well as in flavouring of food and drinks for different industries. The value of the essential oil is directly related to the quality of the oil. Therefore, it is important that the geranium growers take good care of agricultural practices in the production of essential oils as it is a crucial step where oil quality and yield is either obtained or lost. Thus, growing conditions and harvesting time must be cautiously established and controlled including herbage drying to ensure optimum yields and high quality of rose-scented geranium oil. The geranium oil production industry in South Africa is still expanding and oil yield & quality variation is important. This study was undertaken to determine the effects of herbage drying and method, leaf age and paclobutrazol concentrations on oil yield and quality of rose-scented geranium. The responses of oil yield and quality to drying effect was conducted on plant materials which were harvested from the University of Fort Hare Research Farm and glasshouse in December 2014 and October 2015. To determine the effect of drying method on essential oil yield and composition of rose-scented geranium the harvested leaves were dried in direct sunlight (20-35℃) and in a shade conditions (25℃/room temperature). Essential oil was obtained by hydro-distillation using a Clevenger apparatus. The oil samples were analysed by gas chromatography (GC) at the Dohne Agricultural institute. The major components of the oil conducted under the shade method were Linalool (5.58 percent), Menthone (0.68 percent), Citronellol (36.14 percent), Geraniol (7.29 percent), CitronellylFormate (15.39 percent) and GeranylFormate (3.30 percent), whereas those that were sun dried comprised of Linalool (3.56percent), Menthone (0.76 percent), Citronellol (32.25 percent), Geraniol (6.49 percent), CitronellylFormate (14.84 percent) and GeranylFormate (3.15 percent). The analysis of variance showed that freshly dried herbage followed by shade drying is suitable for highest oil yield. In addition, changes in essential oil composition and oil yield with leaf age in rose-scented geranium (Pelargonium capitatum x P. radens cv. Rose) were investigated in a glasshouse of the University of Fort Hare, during January to April and April to August 2012. The plants were allowed to grow to about 12-leaf stage. From top to bottom, the leaves were put into five groups (each group comprising two successive leaves, Pairs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5). Leaf growth (leaf fresh and dry mass), and essential oil yield and composition data were collected and compared. The results indicated that, leaf fresh and dry mass data were significantly lower in the top-most (youngest leaves) as compared with the rest of the leaf pairs harvested. Essential oil in the youngest leaves was colourless, but as the leaves advanced with age, the oil tended to have a blue-green colour. Oil content (on dry mass basis) from the top to bottom, for Leaf Pairs 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5 were about 7.0, 4.9, 3.2, 2.4, 1.9 percent, respectively. Oil yield showed a significant increase in the second youngest pair of leaves and progressively declined, resulting in a significant lower yield in the oldest leaves. Leaf Pairs 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5, contributed about 19.3, 22.0, 17.71, 12.03 and 8.5 percent of the total yield per branch, respectively. Scarcity of high quality forage mainly during the dry season threatens animal productivity in some areas of South Africa, thus the need for identifying livestock feed alternatives. Pigeon pea is a woody legume that has continually been an important shrub in agroforestry and can provide protein-rich livestock feed during times of shortage. Soil fertility to support the production of pigeon pea can be enhanced by application of fertilisers. Therefore, this study was carried out firstly, to determine the effect of phosphorus fertiliser on the growth performance and biomass production of three pigeon pea varieties, and secondly, to investigate the influence of phosphorus application on the nutrient and anti-nutrient content of three pigeon pea varieties. The field experiment was done at the University of Fort Hare research farm in Alice, South Africa. The factors investigated were three pigeon pea varieties namely Chitedze 1, Chitedze 2 and CIMMYT 1 and three phosphorus fertiliser application rates of 0, 40 and 60 kg P/ha. The study was a 3× 3 factorial experiment set up in a randomised complete block design and was replicated three times. The growth performance attributes evaluated in this study include the number of branches, plant height and root collar diameter. Root collar diameter was not significantly (p>0.05) different among the pigeon pea varieties and phosphorus levels. Likewise, the application of phosphorus was not significant (p>0.05) on plant height and the number of branches of all the varieties. However, when P level was varied, there were significant differences among the varieties, and so were the interaction (p<0.05) between variety and phosphorus on plant height and the number of branches. There was no significant (p>0.05) difference among the phosphorus levels on the fresh leaf yield of Chitedze 1 and Chitedze 2, but phosphorus application at 40 kg P/ha increased the fresh leaf yield of CIMMYT 1. Phosphorus application at 60 kg P/ha increased (p<0.05) the dry matter content of Chitedze 1 and Chitedze 2. Furthermore, the results of the trial show that the application of 40 kg P/ha and 60 kg P/ha increased (p<0.05) the dry matter yield of the varieties CIMMYT 1 and Chitedze 2, respectively. The effects of phosphorus application on the nutrient composition of the three pigeon pea varieties varied. The composition of hemicellulose of all the varieties was significantly (p<0.05) increased by the application of 40 kg P/ha. Conversely, the concentration of crude protein, phosphorus, copper and iron, and the calcium to phosphorus ratio of all the pigeon pea varieties was not significantly (p>0.05) affected by phosphorus application and there was no interactive effect of variety and phosphorus. The proximate compositions of fat, total non-structural carbohydrates, ash, neutral detergent fibre, acid detergent fibre, cellulose, neutral detergent insoluble nitrogen, acid detergent insoluble nitrogen of the pigeon pea varieties varied significantly (p<0.05) at different phosphorus application levels. There was an interactive (p<0.05) effect of variety and the level of phosphorus on the concentration of calcium (Ca), potassium (K), magnesium (Mg), sodium, zinc, manganese, and the K/(Ca+Mg) ratio. The digestible dry matter, dry matter intake and the relative feed value were significantly (p<0.05) different among the pigeon pea varieties at varying phosphorus levels. The anti-nutrient composition of Chitedze 2 was not significantly (p>0.05) affected by phosphorus application but the concentration of phenols and saponins of Chitedze 1 was significantly (p<0.05) increased when 60 kg P/ha was applied, but these anti-nutrients were reduced (p<0.05) for CIMMYT 1 at 60 kg P/ha. It can be concluded that phosphorus application influences the biomass production and chemical composition while the optimum phosphorus level vary among the pigeon pea varieties.

Bitcoin was the _rst successful cryptocurrency which allowed users to transact directly with each other without the involvement of the third party (the bank). Bitcoin introduced a new technology known as the blockchain which is considered to be the ext-generation technology". Blockchain is a chronological database used to store all the transactions that have occurred since the inception of Bitcoin. A study of the Blockchain involving its application to the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is presented. This study assesses how the Blockchain functions. The Blockchain has been viewed as the next-generation technology. This study also assesses the application of the Blockchain to other systems other than cryptocurrencies or digital currencies. Recent studies in the literature have proposed applications of the Blockchain to other system (e.g. electronic voting, smart contracts, and intellectual property rights). Although these proposals have been put forward, none has been made speci_cally for SASSA. This study also presents the problems that the Blockchain has (e.g. scalability, security).Recent literature has tried to solve the problem of scalability, by introducing new protocols like mini-blockchain. In addition, this study presents the challenges that SASSA is currently having and it provides details about the attacks that could succeed in the system. The study presents the analysis of the blockchain for its application to SASSA; the analysis includes scalability, performance and security. Based on the analysis, it is shown that the blockchain is not compatible to be applied to SASSA. However, this study proposes a solution to some of the challenges SASSA is currently facing.

Biology and ecology of Glossogobius callidus (Smith 1937) in irrigation impoundments in the Sundays River Valley of the Eastern Cape

- Description: The River Goby Glossogobius callidus (Smith, 1937) is a native abundant fish in both freshwater and estuarine habitats in the Cape Fold Ecoregion, yet little information is available on its life-history. This study aims to contribute to knowledge on the age and growth, reproductive biology and the diet and feeding habits of G. callidus in irrigation impoundments. Glossogobius callidus was sampled monthly from August 2013 till March 2015; from the irrigation ponds in the Sundays River Valley, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. To determine sex, gonads were visually assessed under a dissecting microscope to confirm the sex based on the shape of the urogenital papillae. Fish were then dissected to confirm sex and gonads were categorised into five macroscopic stages which were histologically validated. Microscopic stages of gonadal development were discerned based on nuclear and cytoplasmic characteristics of the oocyte or sperm. Ovaries and sperms were assigned stages based on the most advanced type of oocyte present. In total 2054 fishes ranging in length from 21.1 mm to 137.2 mm TL were sampled. The sex ratio (1.1 males: 1 females) did not differ from unity (x2 = 0.027, df = 1, p = 0.87). Length at 50% maturity (Lm) was 70 mm TL females and 72 mm TL for males. Spawning season was mid-spring and mid-summer and mean ± S.D absolute fecundity was estimated at 1028.2 ± 131.7 ova/fish. Relative fecundity (number of vitellogenic oocytes per gram of eviscerated fish mass) were estimated at 50 ± 18 ova/fish gram. Otoliths from 560 fish were used for ageing. Growth zone deposition rate was validated using edge analysis. As a unimodal periodic regression model best described the temporal proportion of opaque zone deposition on the edge of otoliths over a one-year period, growth zone deposition rate was validated as annual. The oldest female fish was a 4-year old 84.4 mm TL fish and the oldest male was a 7-year old 100.5 mm TL fish. The length-at-age for the entire population of 560 G. callidus provided von Bertalanffy parameters of Lt = 92 (1 - e -0.58(t + 0.4)) mm TL for the entire population, Lt = 70 (1 - e -1.8 (t + 0.06)) mm TL for males and Lt = 65 (1 - e -1.8 (t + 0.05)) mm TL for females. Converting length at maturity to age at maturity demonstrated that G. callidus attained maturity at an age of 2-years. Growth performance described using the phi-prime index showed that G. callidus had lower growth performance compared to the invasive Neogobius melanostomus. Using age structure, natural mortality was estimated at 1.31 yr-1 using catch curve analysis. Diet of G. callidus comprised of ten taxonomic groups. Among these, aquatic invertebrates were the most diverse group but while relative contribution of the dietary components varied across all size classes and seasons, the key prey items were consistently found in all size classes. These were Diptera, Hemiptera, Trichoptera, Odonata, Cladocera, Copepoda, Hydracarina, Amphipoda, Crustacea, and Mollusca. While dietary differences were observed between the size classes and throughout the seasons, G. callidus can be regarded as a generalist feeder preying on an array of different species. Given its abundance and diet, I suggest that G. callidus contribute considerably to the invertebrate predation pressure in these artificial aquatic environments in an arid region. In summary, medium fecundity, fast growth, moderate maturity, and a generalist feeding behaviour demonstrate that G. callidus is an equilibrium life strategist. In comparison with other species, the life-history traits of G. callidus from irrigation impoundments resemble those of other freshwater goby species, some of which are global invaders.

Growth zone deposition rate was validated using edge analysis. As a unimodal periodic regression model best described the temporal proportion of opaque zone deposition on the edge of otoliths over a one-year period, growth zone deposition rate was validated as annual. The oldest female fish was a 4-year old 84.4 mm TL fish and the oldest male was a 7-year old 100.5 mm TL fish. The length-at-age for the entire population of 560 G. callidus provided von Bertalanffy parameters of Lt = 92 (1 - e -0.58(t + 0.4)) mm TL for the entire population, Lt = 70 (1 - e -1.8 (t + 0.06)) mm TL for males and Lt = 65 (1 - e -1.8 (t + 0.05)) mm TL for females. Converting length at maturity to age at maturity demonstrated that G. callidus attained maturity at an age of 2-years. Growth performance described using the phi-prime index showed that G. callidus had lower growth performance compared to the invasive Neogobius melanostomus. Using age structure, natural mortality was estimated at 1.31 yr-1 using catch curve analysis. Diet of G. callidus comprised of ten taxonomic groups. Among these, aquatic invertebrates were the most diverse group but while relative contribution of the dietary components varied across all size classes and seasons, the key prey items were consistently found in all size classes. These were Diptera, Hemiptera, Trichoptera, Odonata, Cladocera, Copepoda, Hydracarina, Amphipoda, Crustacea, and Mollusca. While dietary differences were observed between the size classes and throughout the seasons, G. callidus can be regarded as a generalist feeder preying on an array of different species. Given its abundance and diet, I suggest that G. callidus contribute considerably to the invertebrate predation pressure in these artificial aquatic environments in an arid region. In summary, medium fecundity, fast growth, moderate maturity, and a generalist feeding behaviour demonstrate that G. callidus is an equilibrium life strategist. In comparison with other species, the life-history traits of G. callidus from irrigation impoundments resemble those of other freshwater goby species, some of which are global invaders.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) is one of the most common plastics used in the world because of its durability and low cost. PVC when blended with plasticizers is a versatile thermoplastic and is used in many applications. A plasticizer is a substance that is added to a material, usually a polymer, to increase flexibility, softness and workability. Many elastomers and polymers are tough and dry; therefore they need plasticizers to make them useful. A plasticizer must be thoroughly incorporated in the elastomer or polymer in order for it to be effective. There are many types of plasticizers used in the world. Phthalate plasticizers are the most commonly used plasticizers of the past century. They comprise 92% of the global production of plasticizers. DEHP (di-ethyl hexyl phthalate) is the most widely used phthalate plasticizer. Phthalate plasticizers have been proved to be harmful to the environment and human beings. They can cause many harmful diseases to humans e.g. kidney failure, heart disease, liver failure, fertility and growth disorders. They lower testosterone in baby boys that are exposed through breast milk. In light of the above, the use of certain phthalates has been banned in cosmetics and consumer products. Since there is sufficient evidence to raise fears over the use of phthalate plasticizers, there is a great opportunity to find a way to replace phthalate plasticizers in PVC with bio-plasticizers. The current study represents the first step in developing alternative plasticizers for PVC and other polymers. These alternative plasticizers are characterized by low toxicity, low migration and are less harmful to the environment and human beings. p-menthane-3, 8-diol citronellal acetal is one such proposed bio-plasticizer which has a similar structure to the phthalates and has been previously reported by Innoventon to have potential plasticizing characteristics. During this study PVC was plasticized with PMD-citronellal acetal and tested for plasticizing properties. The plasticizing effect of PMD-citronellal acetal in PVC films was compared to that of conventional plasticizer dibutyl phthalate (DBP). The two plasticizers‟ performance was evaluated by preparing PVC films with varying amounts of each plasticizer and PMD-citronellal acetal subjecting the films to a series of tests. Tensile strength and elongation tests were performed on the plasticized and unplasticized films but these tests did not produce consistent results due to premature failures on the films. However, tensile strength was reduced in some films for both plasticizers compared to unplasticized film. Elongation and flexibility were increased in some samples as the percentage of plasticizer in each film was increased. Glass transition temperatures were determined for the plasticized and unplasticized PVC films. Glass transition temperature of both plasticizers was reduced as the percentage of plasticizer in each film was increased. Multiple regression analysis was done on the data to compare the similarity of the two plasticizers. The statistical tests showed that DBP and PMD-citronellal acetal have the same plasticization property with regard to glass transition temperature of PVC. The thermal stability of the PVC films with the two plasticizers was evaluated. Similar thermal stability was observed on the PVC, PVC with DBP and PVC with PMD-citronellal acetal. The leaching of the PMD-citronellal acetal and DBP were compared. The plasticizer loss increased as the percentage of each plasticizer in the PVC increased. The relationship between the percentage of the plasticizers and leaching rate was further analysed using multiple linear regressions. The two plasticizers were found to have the same leaching rate. FTIR analysis was performed on the plasticized and unplasticized PVC films to identify functional groups present and to determine whether the plasticizers formed any bonds with PVC functional groups. The characteristics bands of PVC were observed in FTIR. The FTIR spectra indicated that the plasticizers were incorporated into the PVC matrix without bonding. The results of the tests showed that PMD-citronellal acetal can be a suitable bio-plasticizer for PVC since it exhibited similar plasticization properties to DBP with regard to glass transition temperatures, leaching rates and thermal stability. Regarding tensile strength and elongation, further testing has to be done as the preliminary results were inconclusive. PMDcitronellal acetal was shown to be a possible alternative for DBP.

Then there are more personal poems: my own joys as well as the difficulties that have kept me from sleep and strangled my dreams as a writer, even though like Mafika Gwala, I believe that “words are born the way mothers beget children/words are born to survive time”. My style is influenced by imagistic, mystic and soulful poetry, such as the haunting Spanish voice of Garcia Lorca who wrote “I lose myself in the heart of certain children” and the absorbing isiXhosa voice of S E K Mqhayi. Investigating the role of Hsp90 and LRP1 in FN matrix dynamics

- Description: Fibronectin (FN), a matrix protein responsible for regulating processes including migration and differentiation, is secreted as a soluble dimer which is assembled into an insoluble extracellular matrix. The dynamics of FN matrix assembly and degradation play a large role in cell migration and invasion contributing to the metastatic potential of cancer cells. Previous studies from our group have shown the direct binding of Hsp90 and FN in vitro and that inhibition of Hsp90 with novobiocin (NOV) caused internalisation of the FN matrix. However, the receptor mediating this internalisation is currently unknown. Low density lipoprotein 1 (LRP1) is a likely candidate as it is a ubiquitous receptor responsible for regulating internalisation of diverse ligands and is known to bind both Hsp90 and FN. We used wild type and knockout LRP1 cell lines to study the endocytosis of FN via this receptor. Here, we demonstrate that LRP1-deficient cells accumulated greatly increased levels of FN and were found to be less sensitive to pharmacological inhibition of Hsp90 by NOV. LRP1-expressing MEF-1 and Hs578T breast cancer cells experienced an increase in total FN in response to NOV, at concentrations below the EC50 value, followed by a dose-dependent loss of FN. We attributed greater FN levels to a loss of extracellular FN matrix coupled with increased internalisation of FN. Cell-surface biotinylation and DOC assays showed that loss of extracellular FN was specific to LRP1-expressing MEF-1 cells. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the loss of extracellular FN is not affected by changes in FN mRNA levels as determined by qRT-PCR, and that treatment with NOV resulted in the accelerated degradation of FN in the presence of cycloheximide. Immunoprecipitation studies reveal a putative complex exists between FN, Hsp90 and LRP1 in both cancer and non-cancer cells which is not perturbed by NOV. Western analyses revealed increased proteolytic processing of LRP1 in response to NOV which we proposed, based on literature, to modulate signalling pathways as a potential mechanism for regulating FN turnover. Moreover, using wound healing assays we identified increased migration to be one of the consequences associated with loss of extracellular FN by Hsp90 inhibition but only in cells containing LRP1. In summary, this study provides new insights into the Hsp90-LRP1 mediated loss of FN matrix and also reveals for the first time the functional consequence related to FN turnover by NOV was an increase in migration in LRP1-expressing cells.

The influence of aspirations on changing livelihood strategies in rural households of Ndabakazi villages in the Eastern Cape

- Description: The objective of this study is to explore the role of aspirations on changing livelihood strategies of rural households of Ndabakazi villages in the Eastern Cape. A sample of 80 respondents was chosen randomly for the household survey and semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect the data. Focus group discussions were also used to supplement the household survey. The data was descriptively analysed using a triangulation method. The findings show that social grants, mainly pensions and non-farm employment, and child support grants are the major sources of income. The majority of the households own five hectares of land and more, in which they grow crops only in gardens adjacent to their homes. However, 29 percent do not produce any crops at all. Farming contributes a small portion to the household income. The choice of farming is more powerful than the external factors. Interest in farming is minimal and can be related to the declining farming activities; therefore, household aspirations have an influence on changing livelihood aspirations. In the case of the rural areas of Ndabakazi – as indeed in many other parts of South Africa - policies of rural development mostly take a top-down approach; as a result most of these policies do not become effective in achieving the intended outcome. Development practitioners should incorporate beneficiaries when planning so as to tailor the development initiatives with the aspirations of local people for them to be effect and achieve intended goals thus a bottom-up approach. The notion that rural household farming activities have declined because they lack inputs, farming implements other necessary support is not always true. Some households are not interested in farming and they cannot be forced.

In the first trail, performance and cost analysis of feeding birds a commercial starter diet from day-old to 21-days of age; then feeding a blend of the commercial finisher diet diluted by a mixture of baobab seedcake and ground maize from day 22nd to 35th were evaluated. The trial was conducted in an environmentally controlled deep litter housing system using 160 Ross 308 chicks of mixed sex that were randomly allocated into 4 treatments consisting of 16 pens of 1X2m2 area per pen, within similar environmental conditions. The trial diets were formulated as follows: T1 was 100 percent standard commercial starter diet, as a control; T2 had 95 percent (112g) commercial starter diet and 5 percent BSC-maize blend (2g BSC: 4g Maize); T3 had 85 percent (102g) of the commercial starter diet and 18percent BSC-maize blend (6g BSC + 12g Maize); and T4 had 75 percent commercial starter diet and 25 percent BSC-maize blend (10g BSC + 20g Maize). All diets (T1, T2, T3 and T4) percentages were calculated based on 120g being 100 percent of the diet. Each treatment consisted of 40 birds and 4 replicates, each replicate consisting of 10 birds per pen. Feed and clean water were provided ad libitum. Feed allocation and body weights were measured at placement, then weekly. Feed intakes (FI), body weight gain (BWG) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were calculated; then the cost analysis of feeding each diet was conducted. No significant differences (P>0.05) were found amongst all growth performance parameters. The cost efficient treatment to feed, which accumulated the cheapest cost of feed per weight gain (R33.62/kg gain) was T2 (5percent BSC+MM). The second trial was conducted to evaluate the effect of feeding diets containing graded levels of baoabab (A. digitata) seedcake on performance, apparent digestibility and digestive organ weights of broilers chickens. A total of 200 Ross 308 day-old chicks of mixed sex were randomly allocated into 4 treatment groups (T1, T2, T3 and T4). The trial diets were as follows: T1 (control), was a commercial starter diet; while T2, T3 and T4 diets contained baobab seedcake meal at 0, 5, 10, and 15percent; respectively. Inclusion of BSC in diets only affected FI during the first and third weeks. In the first week, FI had significant differences (P < 0.05) during the first and third week of the trial, respectively. No significant differences (P>0.05) were observed among treatment groups for all parameters that were considered for digestibility and digestive organ weights. Due to the fact that two different trials were conducted, it was concluded that blend of baobab seedcake and maize from the first trial can be supplemented up to 5 percent replacement level for optimum production; while up to 10 percent baobab seedcake graded level can be used on the second trial without resulting in any negative consequences on growth performance, nutrient utilization and digestive organ weights.

An assessment of e-tolling as a method of financing Gauteng roads

This gave rise to a great deal of protest by road users and a court battle between the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) and the Opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance, a body representing road users. The e-tolling system was criticised at various levels and on numerous grounds, some financial and others appearing to be emotional. This thesis attempted to analyse the various grounds for objection against the system, the main goal of the research being to analyse e-tolling in Gauteng to ascertain whether or not the introduction of e-tolling was justified or whether an alternative method of taxation to pay for the upgrading of Gauteng roads would have been more cost-effective. Secondary data in the form of documents from multiple sources was used in the analysis, including an Economic Impact Assessment that was one of the key inputs into the decision to introduce e-tolling. It was found that there are multiple problems plaguing the e-toll system and e-tolling is not the most cost-effective taxation method of paying for Gauteng roads. Using a fuel levy or general tax revenue available to the National Treasury were both found to be more cost-effective methods as they would have achieved the same result (repairing and upgrading specific Gauteng roads), at a cost of R20,0913 billion less than e-tolling. It was suggested that the best taxation method/s to pay for the roads would have been using a fuel levy and general tax revenue as the primary funding methods, with vehicle licensing fees and long distance toll roads as secondary methods to aid the primary methods.

A questionnaire comprising of four sections: biographical information, ERI questionnaire for stress, turnover intention, and UWES scale, was administered to non-academic support personnel of the University of Fort Hare in all three campuses namely Alice, Bhisho, and East London. Simple random sampling was used to select the participants. The literature reviewed displayed a great need for managers to understand organisational stress and its causes, and how to manage and cope with stress so as to avoid losing employees, especially highly competent employees. The study yielded results that show that there are interrelationships amongst the three variables, and that job engagement does moderate the relationship between organisational stress and employees’ intention to quit.

- Description: This study aims to investigate the relationship between private saving and investment for South Africa using a Vector Error Correction Framework. Saving and investment are considered to be important factors for sustainable economic growth in the country, particularly as these variables have been recorded at significantly lower levels than those of other developing nations. By examining the direction of causality between saving and investment, the most suitable policy measures can be used in stimulating either savings or investment, and as a result aggregate growth. The study found a positive two-way causality to exist between these two variables, proving that both saving and investment-led policies are necessary in raising saving and investment levels. With the inclusion of credit extension as the third variable used to remove any variable bias, the study not only found credit extension to Granger cause private saving, but the reverse relationship was found to be present as well. This relationship was however found to be negative, confirming that lower borrowing constraints may have a negative effect on saving levels. The negative relationship between credit supply and private saving (substitution effect) proves that credit supply will only yield a positive result for savings if channelled through investment expenditure.
