- Description: With the rise in interest in the field of grid and cloud computing, it is becoming increasingly necessary for the grid to be easily maintainable. This maintenance of the grid and grid services can be made easier by using an automated system to monitor and repair the grid as necessary. We propose a novel system to perform automated monitoring and repair of grid systems. To the best of our knowledge, no such systems exist. The results show that certain faults can be easily detected and repaired. , TeX , Adobe Acrobat 9.51 Paper Capture Plug-in

- Description: The objective of this thesis is to develop certain aspects of the theory of (L,M)-fuzzy topological spaces, where L and M are complete lattices (with additional conditions when necessary). We obtain results which are to a large extent analogous to results given in a series of papers of Šostak (where L = M = [0,1]) but not necessarily with analogous proofs. Often, our generalizations require a variety of techniques from lattice theory e.g. from continuity or complete distributive lattices.

- Description: Chromone and flavanone derivatives were prepared by condensation of the corresponding 2-hydroxyacetophenones (with diethyl oxalate or the appropriate aromatic aldehyde respectively) and cyclisation of the condensation products. Saeyer-Villiger rearrangement of these flavanones, with MCPBA, resulted in expansion of the C-ring. Spectroscopic techniques have been used to establish the regioselectivity of the rearrangement and hence, the identity of the rearranged products as 1,5-benzodioxepan-4-ones. The 1,5-benzodioxepan-4-ones were subjected to detailed ¹H and ¹³C n.m.r. analysis and a combination of low and high resolution mass spectrometry has been used to study the mass fragmentation pathways of these ring-expanded products.

- Description: A number of ilmenite-rich heavy mineral deposits occur along the northern margin of the intracratonic Karoo basin, and are hosted by the fluvio-deltaic Middle Ecca Group. Coastal reworking of delta front sands within a regressive, microtidal shoreline may be considered as a depositional model for the development of the heavy mineral deposits. An economic analysis of titanium suggests long term positive demand, and sustained high prices for this commodity. An evaluation of the Dwarsfontein ilmenite-rich heavy mineral deposit, using available data, indicates how important it is for deposits of this type to be situated close to an upgrading plant or export harbour.

- Description: The citrus industry is subject to a number of serious insect pests. Of these, the most important is a sedentary group known as the Armoured Scale Insects (Diaspididae). Ebeling (1950) states that they are of greater economic importance to the industry than all the other pests put together. A great deal has been published on various aspects of the biology, ecology and control of the Diaspididae, much of the work appearing in the books of Quayle (1938), Ebeling (1950) and Bodenheimer (1951). It is very noticeable, however, that the study of the active larvae, or "crawlers", of these insects has been relatively neglected. This lack of work on crawlers is surprising, since they are the only distributive stage in the life cycle of the species. The adult male is also free-living during its brief life span, but takes no part in the actual distribution of the species. It is the position of the female Scale Insect which is important in determining the further spread of the species, since this is the point from which subsequent crawlers will start out on their wanderings. The stage in the life cycle responsible for the position of the female is, of course, the crawler. The crawler is also responsible for the parallel distribution of the male Scales, so that the female can be fertilised. The role of the adult male is confined to the maintenance of the gene flow. From an economic point of view it seems desirable that a complete study be made of the biology of this distributive stage of these important pests.
