- Description: This MFA is a visual art critical investigation of digital representations, manipulations, and exploitations of feminine figures in cyberspace. The particular focus of this study is centred on the work of self-titled reality artist Signe Pierce, as well as my own practical body of work: The Digital Feminine. Case studies of Pierce’s practice include Big Sister (2016), Halo (2018), American Reflexxx (2013) and Reality Hack (2016). Through these case studies I examine the nature of identity formation online as underscored by notions of performativity as well as arguments for the use of feminine aesthetics as feminist critique, specifically through the use of the ‘Venus Flytrapping’ method. Jean Baudrillard famously theorised the hyperreal and the simulacra, claiming that human experience is a simulation of reality1. My MFA thesis addresses contemporary concerns relating to issues of reality, perception, the gaze, and identity in an increasingly virtual world. The 20th century witnessed massive changes in technology, and its subsequent commercialisation marked new territories for mass media, politics, entertainment, social life, and the art world. Avant-garde modern art movements shattered previously held standards of traditional artistic production, thus ideas surrounding the ‘art object’ and the role of artists themselves were fundamentally changed. In a postmodern world where nothing is sacred and life is experienced through the simulacra of the screen, the hyperreal takes over. I investigate how real-world socio-political issues, particularly those related to gender, transcend into the digital realm of cyberspace through discussions of Donna Harraway’s ‘cyborg feminism’ and Judith Butler’s ideas of gender performativity, as well as Erving Goffman’s ideas of everyday performativity. My final body of work for the professional art practice component of this MFA is realised in the form of an immersive installation that straddles the virtual and the real. Influenced by digital and hyperreal aesthetics (such as VapourWave), this installation also explores various expressions of femininity that an individual can express both online and in real life.

The suspended sediment yield and provenance of the Inxu River Catchment, Eastern Cape

- Description: The excessive deposition and accumulation of suspended sediment leads to the degradation of water resources such as dams and rivers. For the purpose of preserving and protecting these resources, suspended sediment needs to be managed, and its management should be catchment-wide and catchment-specific. This is certainly the case for the eroded Inxu River Catchment, which has been identified as a major contributor of sediment to the planned Lalini Dam on the Tsitsa River (a tributary of the Mzimvubu River). Knowledge of suspended sediment flux and catchment sources will aid the design of relevant strategies to manage suspended sediment production. Suspended sediment flux was determined from sediment samples that were collected using citizen-based monitoring techniques at calendar- and event-based sampling frequency, along with discharges estimated using stage-discharge relationships. Sediment source areas were identified by determining the suspended sediment contribution from major sub-catchments and observing similarities in the characteristics of the sub-catchments that produced the most sediment. The Inxu River Catchment produced 5.5 t/ha/yr between 01 May 2016 and 30 April 2017. When compared to modelled sediment yield (7 t/ha/yr) from Le Roux et al. (2015), modelled output was not far off from the measured results and both measured and modelled results identified similar sediment source areas. Q-SSC relationships observed at the Inxu River Outlet indicated that sediment was eroded from local areas and sub-catchment sediment contribution confirmed that most of the sediment was from the lower Inxu River Catchment. Within this area, the Ncolosi and Qwakele River Sub-catchments were major sediment source areas and were subject to widespread gully erosion. Gully erosion was prominent on gentle slopes, foot slopes and valley-bottoms that have concave slope curvature and lie on the Tarkastad Formation. This Formation is associated with some of the most dispersive soils in the area. Moreover, the catchment is vulnerable to erosion due to cultivation and subsequent land abandonment, continuous grazing and dense rural populations. Other studies in the Mzimvubu catchment identified similar catchment characteristics that contribute to excessive erosion. This study has successfully measured sediment yield and identified areas that should be targeted and prioritised for rehabilitation within the Inxu River Catchment. The findings could be applied to a wider catchment scale. The study has successfully demonstrated the use of citizen-based monitoring and desktop techniques and has also identified some pitfalls of this approach.

A meteorological analysis of extreme flood events in the southern parts of the Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: Extreme flood events have been found to occur in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The southern and south-eastern coastal regions are particularly susceptible to floods with daily rainfall records of up to 490 mm having been recorded here. In order to gain a better understanding of these floods, historical floods in the southern parts of the Eastern Cape have been analysed in this study. This study aimed to investigate the most extreme flood events in the history of the area and to analyse the surface observational data during the heavy rainfall events found, to contribute to the understanding of these heavy rainfall events. Seven case studies were investigated using NCEP/NCAR Reanalysis 1 data and surface observational data, to analysis the synoptic circulation and surface data tendencies during heavy rainfall events. All of the case studies that had synoptic data available showed to have a COL system present with the upper air low lying westward of the flood area. The surface synoptic situation presented an intense high pressure system lying south west or south of the country in the Atlantic Ocean between 35-45°S. Another key factor was a surface trough over the interior of the country, due to the COL, extending southwards to protrude off of the south or south eastern coastline east of the flood areas. The combination of these three systems colloquially referred to as a “Black South-Easter”, produced dangerous rainfall intensities when the winds were perpendicular to the coast. The results of the surface observations revealed temperatures increasing at night (against diurnal cycles) with increasing relative humidity preceding the heavy rainfall events. The pressure showed both increasing and decreasing trends during heavy rainfall events however in five of six cases a tight pressure gradient was present producing an influx of moist air into the flood area. Onshore winds were found to be of high importance in heavy rainfall events to bring moist air into the area. Wind speeds greater than 5m/s occurred during times of high rainfall intensities.

- Description: The object of geophysical surveys in mineral exploration has traditionally been to detect subsurface geological features, which may reflect the presence of mineralization in depth and, if possible, to measure the dimensions of the causative body. Geophysical methods may also be used to locate extensions to known mineralization and for determining the size, depth and internal characteristics of an orebody. Marked improvements in geological concepts of ore genesis have led to a better appreciation, amongst geologists, of mineralized environments, and this has had an effect on the use of geophysics in recent years. Geophysical surveys are being increasingly used as an aid in environmental reconstructions and the results of regional surveys may be used to provide an indirect guide to ore. One of the main applications of geophysics lies in areas where the orebodies and associated structures are not exposed, as most geophysical measurements are more expensive than surface geological or geochemical surveys.
