- Description: The re-introduction of large carnivores into relatively small conservation areas that fall within the historic distribution range of the species is becoming an increasingly common occurrence. The success of such re-introductions depends very much on the quality of the information that is available to guide management decisions, but in many cases, little information is available. The re-introduction of lions and cheetahs to Sanbona created the opportunity to monitor the behaviour of re-introduced predators to a relatively large system that was characterised by a low ungulate stocking density and little standing water. The broad aims were to study the feeding and spatial ecologies of the lions and cheetahs, to collect standard base-line data, and to examine the effects of the low prey density and limited standing water on habitat selection, range size and diet. The diet (data collected from direct observation and faecal analysis) was similar to that reported in previous studies, and lions and cheetahs preferred greater kudu, black wildebeest and springbok. Lions preferred medium to large prey items, and cheetahs preferred medium to small prey items. The hilly and mountainous terrain of much of the reserve meant that only 50% of the total space was available to the predators. Home ranges of most of the predators were focused around the single large body of standing water. This is likely to have been a response to the water, the vegetation, and the prey that was attracted to these. Habitat selection was also influenced by inter and intra-specific interactions at least for a solitary male lion and female cheetahs. Range sizes were larger than on some other reserves and it is suggested that this was a result of the low prey density. These results form the basis for management recommendations including the importance of continuing to monitor the system and opening up additional parts of the reserve to the predators.

- Description: Community networks (in South Africa and Africa) are often serviced by limited bandwidth network backhauls. Relative to the basic needs of the community, this is an expensive ongoing concern. In many cases the Internet connection is shared among multiple sites. Community networks may also have a lack of technical personnel to maintain a network of this nature. Hence, there is a demand for a system which will monitor and manage bandwidth use, as well as network use. The proposed solution for community networks and the focus within this dissertation, is a system of two parts. A Community Access Point (CAP) is located at each site within the community network. This provides the hosts and servers at that site with access to services on the community network and the Internet, it is the site's router. The CAP provides a web based interface (CAPgui) which allows configuration of the device and viewing of simple monitoring statistics. The Access Concentrator (AC) is the default router for the CAPs and the gateway to the Internet. It provides authenticated and encrypted communication between the network sites. The AC performs several monitoring functions, both for the individual sites and for the upstream Internet connection. The AC provides a means for centrally managing and effectively allocating Internet bandwidth by using the web based interface (ACgui). Bandwidth use can be allocated per user, per host and per site. The system is maintainable, extendable and customisable for different network architectures. The system was deployed successfully to two community networks. The Centre of Excellence (CoE) testbed network is a peri-urban network deployment whereas the Siyakhula Living Lab (SLL) network is a rural deployment. The results gathered conclude that the project was successful as the deployed system is more robust and more manageable than the previous systems.

- Description: Voice-enabled applications, applications that interact with a user via an audio channel, are used extensively today. Their use is growing as speech related technologies improve, as speech is one of the most natural methods of interaction. They can provide customer support as IVRs, can be used as an assistive technology, or can become an aural interface to the Internet. Given that the telephone is used extensively throughout the globe, the number of potential users of voice-enabled applications is very high. VoiceXML is a popular, open, high-level, standard means of creating voice-enabled applications which was designed to bring the benefits of web based development to services. While VoiceXML is an ideal language for creating these applications, VoiceXML gateways, the hardware and software responsible for interpreting VoiceXML applications and interfacing with the PSTN, are still expensive and so there is a need for a low-cost gateway. Asterisk, and open-source, TDM/VoIP telephony platform, can be used as a low-cost PSTN interface. This thesis investigates adding a VoiceXML service to Asterisk, creating a low-cost VoiceXML prototype gateway which is able to render voice-enabled applications. Following the Component-Based Software Engineering (CBSE) paradigm, the VoiceXML gateway is divided into a set of components which are sourced from the open-source community, and integrated to create the gateway. The browser requires a VoiceXML interpreter (OpenVXI), a Text-To-Speech engine (Festival) and a speech recognition engine (Sphinx 4). The integration of the components results in a low-cost, open-source VoiceXML gateway. System tests show that the integration of the components was successful, and that the system can handle concurrent calls. A fully compliant version of the gateway can be used in the real world to render voice-enabled applications at a low cost.

- Description: As Voice over IP becomes more prevalent, value-adds to the service will become ubiquitous. Voice over IP (VoIP) is no longer a single service application, but an array of marketable services of increasing depth, which are moving into the non-desktop market. In addition, as the range of devices being generally used increases, it will become necessary for all services, including VoIP services, to be accessible from multiple platforms and through varied interfaces. With the recent introduction and growth of the open source software PBX system named Asterisk, the possibility of achieving these goals has become more concrete. In addition to Asterisk, a number of open source systems are being developed which facilitate the development of systems that interoperate over a wide variety of platforms and through multiple interfaces. This thesis investigates Asterisk in terms of its viability to provide the depth of services that will be required in a VoIP environment, as well as a number of other open source systems in terms of what they can offer such a system. In addition, it investigates whether these services can be made available on different devices. Using various systems built as a proof-of-concept, this thesis shows that Asterisk, in conjunction with various other open source projects, such as the Twisted framework provides a concrete tool which can be used to realise flexible and protocol independent telephony solutions for a small to medium enterprise.

- Description: Although sand deposits are present on many intertidal rocky shores, their effects on species richness, zonation and trophic structure have often been overlooked. This study is the first to recognise sand as an important abiotic factor on South African rocky shores. Rocky shores in the eastern Cape Province of South Africa are subject to extensive sand inundation and are composed of two hard substrata of differing topographies. Four sites on one substratum and six on the other were sampled quantitatively using quadrats. The biota were identified, counted and/ or weighed to provide a matrix of species biomass and numbers in separate zones. This matrix was then analysed using ordination and classification. A total of 321 species were identified which is more than local rocky or sandy shores. While the intermediate disturbance hypothesis would predict high species richness on these shores, it does not fully explain this richness nor the distribution of species assemblages. Habitat heterogeneity, including the dynamics of sand deposits, is strongly influenced by substratum topography and is the most important factor generating species richness. Abrasion by sand (sand scour) causes local reductions in richness but the presence of semi-permanent sand deposits allows habitation by psammophilic and sand-dependent species. As a result the biota of a sand inundated rocky shore includes both a full rocky shore and a large sandy beach component. Substratum topography controls patterns of sand deposition and retention and community analysis showed that samples were clustered primarily according to species richness and secondarily according to substratum type. Ordination of species identified an arc of species assemblages of decreasing levels of sand tolerance. These corresponded to sample groupings so that th assemblages found in various habitats were characterised by particular levels of sand tolerance. The presence of sand has a negative effect on the biomass of primary producers and filter feeders but a positive effect on the biomass of deposit feeders. Because sand is retained to different degrees in different zones, trophic structure varies between zones and to a lesser extent, between rock types. In general, however, the trophic structure of sand inundated rocky shores is similar to that of non-inundated shores.

- Description: The Wilderness lakes system represents a segmented barrier lagoon and comprises three interconnected lakes; Rondevlei, Langvlei and Eilandvlei. The latter is further linked by the Serpentine channel to the Touw river and Wilderness lagoon. The role of these channels, as well as a sluice in the Serpentine, in structuring certain aspects of the ecology of the system was investigated. An analysis of the salt budget of the lakes suggests that the Serpentine dampens tidaI processes to such an extent that they play only a minor role in the overall budget. Furthermore, the channel between Eilandvlei and Langvlei prevents any tidal salt input to the upper lakes. Their estuarine environments are however maintained by salt inputs which occur when the mouth is closed. This unusual phenemenon means that the sluice may have a minimal effect on the salt budget of the system because it is only closed when the mouth of the lagoon is open. Environmental conditions in each of the lakes, the Touw river and Wilderness lagoon were compared in terms of their physico-chemical characteristics and submerged macrophyte communities. A principal components analysis suggests that the physico-chemical environment of each lake is similar. The Touw river however has a very different environment, whilst that of Wilderness lagoon has some similarities to both the lakes and the river. During the study macrophyte communities recovered from a major recession which occurred between 1979 and 1981 . Biomasses in excess of 1000g m⁻² were recorded in both Langvlei and Eilandvlei. In the latter however, macrophyte growth was less prolific than in the former, as some areas of the littoral supported no growth at all. Macrophyte encroachment in the channels is a major factor inhibiting water flow between the lakes. This encroachment is most severe in the Eilandvlei/Langvlei channel where macrophytes covered 80% of the channel's area. The dominant fish fauna throughout the system is composed of a marine/estuarine migratory component. In the lakes the Mugilidae and Sparidae are the most common families, whilst in the lagoon and Touw river predators such as Lichia amia and Argyrosomus hololepidotus also commonly occur. Eilandvlei serves as the initial nursery area for most migratory species. An estimated 52000 fish migrated up the Serpentine towards Eilandvlei during February 1984 . Most fish do not penetrate as far as Langvlei, and this can be related to macrophyte encroachment in the Eilandvlei/Langvlei channel. However, it is argued that should this channel be dredged and the macrophytes removed, the nursery potential of the system would not be greatly enhanced . This is because environmental heterogeneity, in association with an abundance of food in Eilandvlei, make this lake the most attractive nursery area to juvenile marine/estuarine fish.

- Description: The Hex River Valley is one of the main centres in South Africa for cultivation of table grapes of export quality. The vines require irrigation water, which must be low in dissolved solids. Approximately two thirds of the annual irrigation requirement is obtained from boreholes and the balance from surface water sources. During the early 1960s a deterioration in the quality of the groundwater was noticed, becoming critical in some areas, and borehole yields also declined. The main objectives of this study were therefore to obtain an understanding of the hydrogeological and hydrogeochemical processes operating in the valley to explain the derogation of the groundwater resource and enable optimum utilisation and management of the resource in the future. To achieve these objectives, field work involving exploration drilling, aquifer tests, hydrocensus, long-term monitoring of groundwater levels and surfacewater flows and extensive sampling of the ground and surface waters was carried out. Analysis of these data gave quantitative information on groundwater occurrence, aquifer hydraulic properties, groundwater recharge and storage, chemical characteristics of the ground and surfacewaters and sources of dissolved species. , KMBT_363 , Adobe Acrobat 9.53 Paper Capture Plug-in

The anodic oxidation of calcium lactate : an estimation of the products of electrolysis and an investigation into some of the problems involved

- Description: The subject of this thesis was chosen originally as a result of a suggestion made by a manufacturer of lactic acid. Lactic acid is made by a fermentation process from molasses and the acid is extracted from the fermentation liquors as calcium lactate. The conversion of the calcium lactate back to lactic acid is a tedious process from an industrial point of view. It was therefore suggested that the conversion may be more easily accomplished by electrolysis. The first experimental work was conducted with this object in view, but it soon became apparent that it was unlikely that lactic acid could be produced in suitable quantities for industrial purposes by this means. There was no reference in the literature to the electrolysis of calcium lactate, and little reference to the electrolysis of lactates in general, and what there was appeared to be conflicting, so it was decided to continue the investigation into the subject in order to determine what are the products of the anodic oxidation of calcium lactate. Intro., p.1.
