A study of the geology of the Vaalbank and Lady Frere areas in the Karoo Basin of South Africa using gravity, magnetic and gamma-ray spectrometry data: implications of groundwater potential

- Description: The Vaalbank and Lady Frere areas belong to the Elliot, Molteno and Burgersdorp Formations, that are part of the sedimentary succession of the Beaufort Group in the Karoo Basin of South Africa. There is Quaternary alluvium covering the mudstone, sandstone and shale rocks of the Beaufort Group. Dolerite and gabbro sills of the Karoo age have intruded the whole area. A number of investigations were carried out for the study namely field observations, petrographic, X-ray diffraction, airborne gamma-ray spectrometry, aeromagnetic and gravity analyses. Twenty four rock samples were collected in the field from fresh outcrops of the Karoo dolerites, Burgersdorp and Molteno formations. The measured densities and porosities show that the Karoo dolerite suite has the highest average dry density of 2.771 g/cm3 and the lowest average porosity of 3%. The Burgersdorp Formation has an intermediate average density of 2.458 g/cm3 and an intermediate average porosity of 5.4%. The Molteno Formation has the lowest average density of 2.190 g/cm3 and the highest average porosity of 14.5%. Petrographic and geochemical investigations were carried on 19 rocks samples collected in the field to determine the mineralogy character using microscopic and XRD analyses. Both petrographic and X-ray diffraction analyses revealed that the sandstones of the study area are composed of quartz as their primary mineral and feldspars as the secondary mineral. The dolerite consists of euhedral structured minerals such as magnetite, pyroxene, plagioclase and amphibole. The gamma ray maps show high spectrometric values are associated with the Burgersdorp Formation, alluvium cover and dolerite dykes. The low spectrometric values are associated with dolerite sills and ring complexes. The boundaries of the sill/ring complexes are clearly delineated by the K/U ratio and ternary maps. The magnetic maps show ring like patterns of magnetic high anomalies that are due to the sills/ring complexes whilst the numerous, narrow, linear magnetic highs are due to faults and dolerite dyke swarms. The majority of the dykes trend in a NW-SE direction and a few dykes are in a NE-SE direction. The magnetic power spectrum indicates four depths of the magnetic sources at average depths of 0.13 km, 1.60 km, 2.83 km and 12.40 km. The magnetic depth iii slices maps show that both the circular/ring like and linear anomalies extend from shallow to deeper depth of 12.4 km. The gravity map is dominated by a long wavelength gravity anomaly that increases from about -120 mGals in the northwestern corner of the study area to -110 mGals in the southeastern corner of the study area. Results from 2½D gravity modelling show that this long wavelength anomaly is due to a horizontal Moho at a depth of 47 km in the study area, which shallows outside the study area near the coast. Superimposed on it are short wavelength gravity anomalies due to low density sediments and high density dolerite intrusions. The simple 2½D models generated from five profiles traversing the study area reveal that the sediments of the Karoo Supergroup extend from the surface down to a depth 5 km below sea level attaining a maximum thickness of about 6½ km. These sediments are dykes, sills and ring complexes. The dykes and sills/ring complexes identified from gamma ray spectrometry, magnetic and gravity data results are likely to be associated with fractures, joints, cracks and fissures in the host rocks, which form preferential pathways for groundwater transmission. Hence, they could be suitable targets for groundwater.

Fintech and the financial services industry in South Africa

- Description: A preliminary literature review indicated that little to no research exists on the Fintech phenomena in the South African context. The purpose of this study is to gain the perceptions of South African bankers on the Fintech phenomena and to develop a deeper understanding of the Fintech phenomena in the South African context. An empirical exploratory qualitative approach was employed and an interpretivism research paradigm was utilised. A detailed literature review was conducted into the Fintech phenomena as well as the financial services sector in South Africa. The use of purposive sampling was initiated, and the sample of the study consisted of five individuals who work for the largest South African banks. The data was gathered through in-depth structured interviews which consisted of ten predetermined research questions. Rich data was obtained which was then analysed through the use of content analysis and coding. This enabled the transcription of data and the extraction of codes which assisted in obtaining findings that answered the research question. Authenticity, rigor, trustworthiness and credibility criteria was applied from the onset and throughout the research study. The themes that emerged from the data analysis process were navigated so that findings could be reached by comparing the themes to previous literature. In conclusion, six themes emerged from the data analysis, namely; collaboration can create new markets and create market share, investing in Fintech to overcome legacy infrastructure by going digital, Fintech companies are more customer focused, balance regulation between protecting the industry and creating an innovative environment competition in future will be fiercer, competition is good for the performance of the financial services industry and the Fintech phenomena is positive for the banking industry. Certain findings and conclusions were drawn; regulations in South Africa do allow for innovation, regulation is not biased towards banks, banks innovate and collaborate through Fintech, Fintech is positive for the banking industry, South African banks are investing in preparation for Fintech, South African banks have limited budgets, there is no significant loss of market share for banks due to Fintech companies, market share can be gained by banks partnering with Fintech companies and the future of the financial services industry in South Africa.

We aim to present formulae for the number of maximal chains and the number of distinct fuzzy subgroups of this group. Our study will include some theory on non-abelian groups since the classification of distinct fuzzy subgroups of this group relies on the crisp characterization of maximal chains. We give the definition of a natural equivalence relation introduced by Murali and Makamba in [67] which we will use in this study. Based on this definition, we introduce two counting techniques that we will use to compute the number of distinct fuzzy subgroups of Dpnq. In this dissertation, we use the criss-cut counting technique as our primary method of enumeration, and the cross-cut method serves as a means of verifying results we obtain from our primary method. To classify distinct fuzzy subgroups of this group, we begin by investigating the dihedral groups Dpnq, for p and q distinct primes and specific values of n = 2 and 3 to observe a trend. We classify the flags of these groups using the characterization of flags introduced in [93]. From this characterization, we then present formulae for the number of distinct fuzzy subgroups attributed to the flags of Dp 2q and Dp 3q . To generalise results for Dpnq, for p and q distinct primes and n ∈ N, we characterize the flags of this group and classify them as either cyclic, mdcyclic for 1 ≤ m ≤ n, or b-cyclic. Finally, we establish a general formula for the number of distinct fuzzy subgroups obtainable from these flags. We conclude by comparing results obtained from using our general formula to those obtained by other researchers for the same group. Estuary-dependency and multiple habitat connectivity of juvenile leervis lichia amia (pisces: carangidae) and the factors influencing their movements

While in estuaries, the juveniles of estuary-associated fishes are exposed to frequent, abrupt changes in environmental conditions and, as such, utilise movement as a strategy to cope with the changing conditions. Therefore, to gain a better understanding of the importance of estuaries (i.e. estuary-dependency) to estuary-associated species, knowledge on their movement patterns within estuaries, the links between habitats, and the environmental and cyclical processes driving these movements, is necessary. Lichia amia, commonly known as leervis or garrick in southern Africa, is an over-exploited, estuary-dependent fishery species targeted by coastal recreational and subsistence fishers, as well as spearfishers, throughout its South African distribution. Aspects of its biology and life history have been assessed; however, knowledge on its movement behaviour is limited to a single conventional dart tagging study, which described large-scale coastal movements of juvenile, sub-adult and adult leervis. As such, little is known about area use and movement patterns within estuaries, or the degree of connectivity between estuarine and marine habitats. Therefore, the aim of this study, using conventional dart tagging and passive acoustic telemetry methods, was to assess the role of estuarine nursery habitats in the life cycle of the leervis by examining area use patterns and movement behaviour within estuaries, investigating the degree of habitat connectivity, and determining the drivers (cyclical rhythms and environmental variables) of estuarine use and connectivity. A dedicated conventional mark-recapture study on juvenile leervis within the Swartkops Estuary revealed a high level of estuarine fidelity (philopatry) suggesting that estuaries are important nursery habitats. However, movement distances increased with increasing fish length, with some fish also being recaptured in the neighbouring marine environment. These results provided evidence of an ontogenetic habitat shift, with smaller fish remaining in the estuary for extended periods and larger individuals undertaking more extensive movements. Complementary passive acoustic telemetry studies were conducted in the Kowie and Goukou estuaries, spaced 620 km apart, to assess area use, movement patterns, residency and multiple habitat connectivity of juvenile leervis. These telemetry studies showed varying levels of residency within the tagging estuaries, and seasonal variation in area use. The lengths of estuary used by leervis tagged in the Kowie Estuary generally decreased with the onset of austral winter, while fish tagged in the Goukou Estuary generally moved into the marine environment. Despite tagged individuals spending on average 56% and 38% of the total monitoring periods within the Kowie and Goukou estuaries, respectively, fish displayed high levels of multiple habitat connectivity, with 71% and 76% of Kowie and Goukou fish, respectively, visiting adjacent marine and estuarine environments. A total of 11 different neighbouring habitats (estuaries and ports) were visited by Kowie fish, while fish tagged in the Goukou Estuary only visited four adjacent habitats. These differences in connectivity could be attributed to the proximity of many more estuaries to the Kowie Estuary compared to the Goukou Estuary. Estuarine movements by acoustically tagged leervis in both estuaries followed a strong diel but a much weaker tidal pattern. A number of environmental variables significantly influenced estuarine movements and marine excursions (including river inflow, photoperiod and moon phase). However, water temperature (river and sea) had the most significant effects on these movements, with decreasing winter river temperatures coincident with a downstream shift in mean daily position of fish tagged in the Kowie Estuary, and movement into the marine environment from the Goukou Estuary. Interestingly, the area use patterns of juvenile leervis tagged in the Kowie and Goukou estuaries were different, predominantly using limited portions of each estuary. Kowie fish spent more time in the mouth region and lower reaches, while Goukou fish spent more time in the lower and middle reaches of the estuary. Therefore, should no-take Estuarine Protected Areas be implemented, inter-estuary differences would need to be considered to determine the most effective stretches of estuary to close to provide maximum protection for leervis. This study provided new information on the movement behaviour of juvenile leervis, the degree to which juveniles depend on estuaries as nursery areas, and the cyclical rhythms and environmental factors influencing their movements. The study therefore contributes considerably to our understanding of the role of estuaries in the life history of leervis, and provides essential information for the improved management of this over-exploited species.

Investigating the interplay between Grade 9 learners’ home visual literacy and their development of school visual literacy in English First Additional language classrooms

- Description: Visual literacy is one of the critical aspects that English First Additional Language teachers and learners battle with. The focus of this investigation was on developing learners’ performance in visual literacy and helping teachers improve teaching practice. This thesis reports on efforts in developing critical visual literacy in two Grade 9 classrooms; a rural and a township school in the King William’s Town District in the Eastern Cape. The research spread over four week, spending two weeks at each school as an ethnographic researcher, being assimilated to the culture of the each school. In understanding the kind of visual knowledge that these learners brought from home between the rural-urban divide, the learners displayed an interest in visual literacy, used the necessary language and appeared to design certain visual materials around the school. Data was collected in the form of questionnaires that learners filled, informal Facebook conversation screenshots, as well as the researcher’s field notes. Learner focus group discussions were conducted, tape recorded and transcribed. Two lessons each were observed with the two teachers, and these were recorded and transcribed. A camera was used to take shots in the classroom to show the interaction between the teachers and the learners. Also, semi-structured interviews were held with each teacher and these were recorded and transcribed. The data revealed that there were no major differences between rural and urban school learners. However, the research has provided a valuable insight into the mismatch between home visual literacy practices and school visual literacy teaching. Learners also displayed a low reading culture but the medium for reading has shifted considerably and learners developed communication skills through digital technology. Teacher agency in the classroom revealed that teachers need to first engage with the cognitive functions of the visual images that they teach by the prevalence of low level questions that they ask. Moreover, there is a place for translanguaging in visual literacy lessons. These indicate important areas for teacher development to promote the emergence of transformative agency.

- Description: Visual literacy is one of the critical aspects that English First Additional Language teachers and learners battle with. The focus of this investigation was on developing learners’ performance in visual literacy and helping teachers improve teaching practice. This thesis reports on efforts in developing critical visual literacy in two Grade 9 classrooms; a rural and a township school in the King William’s Town District in the Eastern Cape. The research spread over four week, spending two weeks at each school as an ethnographic researcher, being assimilated to the culture of the each school. In understanding the kind of visual knowledge that these learners brought from home between the rural-urban divide, the learners displayed an interest in visual literacy, used the necessary language and appeared to design certain visual materials around the school. Data was collected in the form of questionnaires that learners filled, informal Facebook conversation screenshots, as well as the researcher’s field notes. Learner focus group discussions were conducted, tape recorded and transcribed. Two lessons each were observed with the two teachers, and these were recorded and transcribed. A camera was used to take shots in the classroom to show the interaction between the teachers and the learners. Also, semi-structured interviews were held with each teacher and these were recorded and transcribed. The data revealed that there were no major differences between rural and urban school learners. However, the research has provided a valuable insight into the mismatch between home visual literacy practices and school visual literacy teaching. Other reasons given for the unattractiveness of the farm job included the seasonal nature of farm employment, which left workers with no source of income in the offseason, the redundancy associated with farm tasks, perceived poor treatment of workers and lack of information on UIF and Provident funds to farm workers. To address problems associated with the dislike of farm work, seasonality of on-farm employment and the reportedly relatively low income, farm managers, the local municipality and the Labour Department could possibly be involved in creating more communal agricultural projects and help provide local community members to venture into supporting alternative careers within the Hospitality, Ecotourism and Conservation Industries through training programmes. Farm managers may need to consider improving their working relationship with workers in communication and when assigning tasks. Farmers and the local municipality could also consider investing in training programmes for the unemployed residents to equip them with technical skills that can improve their chances of finding jobs.

In the course of my analysis, I also evaluate the suitability of Badiou's ethic as a standpoint from which to engage with literature on revolution. Ultimately, then, the aesthetic I construct not only contests the notion that radical transformation is always destructive, but also renders one sensitive to revolutionary literature's excessive and supplementary dimensions.

Thermoluminescence of natural quartz

- Description: The kinetic and dosimetric features of the main thermoluminescence peak of quartz have been investigated in unannealed as well in quartz annealed at 500˚C for 10 minutes. The main peak is found at 92 and 86˚C respectively for aliquots of unannealed and annealed samples irradiated to 10 Gy and heated at 5.0˚C/s. For each sample, the intensity of the main peak is enhanced with repetitive measurement whereas its maximum temperature is unaffected. The peak position of the main peak in each sample is independent of the irradiation dose and this, together with its fading characteristics are consistent with first-order kinetics. For low doses, typically between 2 and 10 Gy, the dose response of the main peak in each sample is linear. In the intermediate dose range from 10 to 60 Gy, the growth of the main peak in each sample is sub-linear and for greater doses, in the range from 60 Gy to 151 Gy, it is linear again. The half-life of the main peak of the unannealed sample is about 1.3 h whereas that of the annealed sample is about 1.2 h. The main peak in each sample can be approximated to a first-order glow peak. As the heating rate increases, the intensity of the main peak in each sample decreases. This is evidence of thermal quenching. The main peak in each sample is the only peak regenerated by phototransfer. The resulting phototransferred peak occurs at the same temperature as the original peak and has similar kinetic and dosimetric features. For a preheat temperature of 120˚C, the intensity of the phototransferred peak in each sample increases with illumination time up to a maximum and decreases afterwards. At longer illumination times (such as 30 min up to 1 h), no further decrease in the intensity of the phototransferred peak is observed. The traps associated with the 325˚C peak are the main source of the electrons responsible for the regenerated peak. Radioluminescence emission spectra were also measured for quartz annealed at various temperatures. Emission bands in quartz are affected by annealing and irradiation. A strong enhancement of the 3.4 eV (~366 nm) emission band is observed in quartz annealed at 500˚C. A new emission band which grows with annealing up to 1000˚C is observed at 3.7 eV (~330 nm) for quartz annealed at 600˚C. An attempt has been made to correlate the changes in radioluminescence emission spectra due to annealing with the influence of annealing on luminescence lifetimes in quartz.

- Description: Increasing numbers of medicines are being used by pregnant South African women in the public sector during pregnancy, for the treatment of different biomedical and supernatural disease states and conditions. The motivation for the research is to support the development of more local pregnancy registries in order to strengthen evidence for the safety and efficacy of medicines used in pregnancy. A mixed methods approach was used. Women in their ninth month of pregnancy in a public sector setting, and four community pharmacists were identified. The women who met the inclusion criteria were recruited. One in-depth semi-structured interview was conducted with each woman before giving birth and data on their pregnancy outcomes were collected after labour. Coincidentally, the mother of one of the participants was found to be a traditional healer. She was also interviewed on the topic. A structured questionnaire was administered to the pharmacists. Ten pregnant women between the ages of 19 to 39 who had used or were using a traditional medicine during the pregnancy were recruited. All the participants had had at least one antenatal check up during their pregnancy with one having attended five times. No abnormal results were reported from any of the check ups or tests done during the visits. All of them had been to school and had at least Standard 8/Grade 10 education. Ten babies were seen between one and four days postpartum and no birth defects were obvious or were reported for any of them. The traditional healer did not provide additional information to what the women had said and confirmed that some of the practices the women reported were known to her as traditional medicine practices. All four pharmacists indicated that they considered complementary and alternative medicines (CAMs) to be “somewhat effective” and sold them at their pharmacies although none of them were aware of whether or not they were registered with the MCC. None of the pharmacists appeared to have an in-depth knowledge of traditional, complementary and alternative medicines (TCAMs). All four pharmacists said that it is important to have a basic understanding of TCAMs before using them, although they did not agree on the reasons for this. All of them felt that pharmacists have a professional responsibility to provide information on TCAMs (especially herbal preparations) and two felt that providing this information is part of a medical doctors’ responsibility. No harm from taking TCAMs could be shown. However herbal medicines have numerous ingredients some of which are unknown and taking these medicines is risky. The pharmacists in this sample were unsure whether they were accessing unreliable CAM information. Reliable sources of information and reference materials on CAMs to assist pharmacists and other healthcare professionals are needed. The apparent widespread use of TCAM in pregnancy indicates a need for documentation about its efficacy and safety. The establishing of TCAM pregnancy registries should seriously be considered. Due to the increase in CAM use, CAM education during pharmacists’ training as well as continuing professional development (CPD) in CAM for pharmacists in practice should be encouraged.

- Description: In 1998, South Africa introduced outcomes-based education to affect the shifts in pedagogy considered necessary following the move to democracy in 1994. Across the globe, the use of the portfolio to assess learners is increasingly being promoted as a form of progressive pedagogy. Hence, its adoption by the country as a new form of assessment practice was warranted. However, how the portfolio is constructed and perceived by educators within the classroom can become problematic in practice. This was apparent in the South African context and justifies research into how the portfolio is constructed as an assessment method in educational policy and by educators in the classrooms. The Curriculum Guide Directive text and the transcripts of twenty-one interviews carried out in three Eastern Cape schools served as the source of data for this study. Discourses make up a powerful framework of spoken, written and symbolic texts of institutional bureaucracies. Within these institutions human subjects are defined and constructed. Therefore, discourse construction acts as institutional forms of knowledge which can exude power over the individual if not made transparent. I used critical discourse analysis to uncover the discourses that were embedded within the Curriculum Guide Directive and to identify the discourses entrenched within the educators’ perceptions of the portfolio. The discourses in the Curriculum Guide Directive suggest the construction of the portfolio as a method of surveillance to track whether the educators are preparing learners for the school leaving examination and instructing the educators to provide evidence in the form of a portfolio. Analysis of the transcripts of the twenty one interviews with educators from three schools in the Eastern Cape indicated that the portfolio was not seen as a form of assessment by the educators, but as a form of discipline put in place by the Department of Education to ensure that they are preparing the learners for the school leaving examination and are able to produce proof of this preparation in the form of a portfolio. The discourses from the research highlighted that the school leaving examination is hegemonised into South African educational pedagogy as a form of traditional assessment and is not challenged even when it is no longer bringing about the dominant ideological goals. The portfolio was not seen as an assessment method by the educators nor represented as such in the Curriculum Guide Directive. Therefore, the job of the portfolio became that of a policing tool. Thus, a school curriculum which has been introduced with the intent of furthering social justice can become exclusive in practice, even with the best intentions.

- Description: In 1998, South Africa introduced outcomes-based education to affect the shifts in pedagogy considered necessary following the move to democracy in 1994. Across the globe, the use of the portfolio to assess learners is increasingly being promoted as a form of progressive pedagogy. Hence, its adoption by the country as a new form of assessment practice was warranted. However, how the portfolio is constructed and perceived by educators within the classroom can become problematic in practice. This was apparent in the South African context and justifies research into how the portfolio is constructed as an assessment method in educational policy and by educators in the classrooms. The Curriculum Guide Directive text and the transcripts of twenty-one interviews carried out in three Eastern Cape schools served as the source of data for this study. Discourses make up a powerful framework of spoken, written and symbolic texts of institutional bureaucracies. Within these institutions human subjects are defined and constructed. Therefore, discourse construction acts as institutional forms of knowledge which can exude power over the individual if not made transparent. Cross-tabulations have been used to further explore the relationship between the variables mentioned above. It was found that a statistically significant correlation exists between the BDI, BHS and YSQ. Maladaptive cognitive schemas were found to have a strong positive correlation 4 to depression, whereas hopelessness was found to have a less significant role in Unipolar Mood Disorder. The most significant schemas found in relation to hopelessness, were the Social Isolation, Unrelenting Standards and Pessimism schemas. With regards to depression, the most significant schemas were found to be Mistrust, Practical Incompetence, Vulnerability, Subjugation, Self-Sacrifice, Emotional Inhibition, Unrelenting Standards, Entitlement, Insufficient Self-Control, Admiration, Pessimism and Self-Punitiveness. All the above mentioned variables proved to have a statistically significant relationship. The findings of this research study are for the most part consistent with the literature on depression, hopelessness and cognitive vulnerabilities, and all of the above mentioned concepts have been found to be related.

- Description: The introduction of the new curriculum in South Africa has introduced a new approach to literacy in the early years of the Foundation Phase (Grade R – 1), which has a strong emphasis on emergent literacy. The National Curriculum Statement (NCS) for English – Home Language describes this approach as balanced “because it begins with children’s emergent literacy, it involves them in reading real books and writing for genuine purposes, and it gives attention to phonics”. For many teachers in South Africa, this means moving away from the “reading readiness approach” which held that children were not ready to read and write until they were able to perform sub-skills such as auditory discrimination and visual discrimination, and had developed their fine and large motor skills to a certain level. The purpose of this study was to trace and document children’s emergent literacy development in a Grade R class over a period of two months. More specifically, the intention was to investigate whether it was possible for trained, motivated teachers who have access to everyday resources in otherwise ordinary South African schools, to achieve the Assessment Standards set out in the NCS for Home Language in Grade R. In this school-based case study, the sample consisted of 4 children from 1 preschool in Queenstown, South Africa. The participants were selected according to gender and language because these appear to be significant factors in literacy development. The interpretive approach was used to collect and analyse data. Data were gathered from three main sources; (1) a research journal, (2) semi-structured interviews with the parents of the 4 participants, and (3) samples of the participants’ spontaneous writing. These were then triangulated to give credibility, objectivity and validity to the interpretation of the data. The findings revealed that: (1) Social class, language and to a lesser extent gender emerged as factors which impacted significantly on the children’s literacy development, resulting in some children progressing more quickly than others. In South Africa, language is an indicator of social class. The English-speaking children had a socioeconomic and language advantage which enabled them to make considerable strides in their literacy development. In contrast, the Xhosa-speaking children were disadvantaged by their socioeconomic and language circumstances, which made their literacy progress much slower. (2) The disparities between the English and Xhosa-speaking children in terms of the stability and structure of their families, had a considerable impact on their literacy performance. (3) Finally, teachers in English medium classes need to be aware of these factors. They need to design strategies and interventions to help those children who are learning in their additional language to achieve at similar levels to their English-speaking peers. If this is not done, the gap between the literacy achievements of the English-speakers and speakers of other languages will get wider and wider as time goes by.

- Description: Climate change has become a discussion topic of exponentially increasing urgency and importance amoung world leaders of all disciplines. These changes are brought about by the emission of so-called Greenhouse gases from various human activities. The primary cause of CO2 emissions is the burning of the Earth’s supply of nonrenewable natural fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas. The world first agreed on the prevention of “dangerous” climatic changes at the Earth Summit in 1992. The Kyoto Protocol of 1997 was the first step toward protection of the atmosphere and prescribes restrictions on emission pollutants. Since then the vehicle gas emissions are being controlled by means of different gas emissions norms, like the European Union Norm in Europe. The automotive manufacturers and suppliers are collectively working on reducing overall vehicle emissions. They are focusing on several different emission limiting possibilities, for example improved engine design, special fuel development and exhaust gas treatment systems. The exhaust gas treatment process requires continuous controlling and management of the exhaust gas emissions while driving a vehicle. Certain factors such as high emission temperatures have a negative influence on the life span of these systems. Their functionality and durability is also known to be reduced by the presence of chemical poisoning species like sulphur, phosphorus, zinc and calcium. The chemical poisoning species are produced during combustion of fuel and engine oil. They are therefore contained in the exhaust emissions and can poison the catalyst when passing over it. Phosphorous poisoning is particularly problematic and should be reduced considerably. This study involves the investigation of the phosphorous poisoning process and aims to provide clarity regarding the influences of different fuel and oil compositions on the severity of the process. Engine oil and biodiesel are two major sources of phosphorous poisoning. The phosphorus contained in biodiesel fuel is a natural component and can be minimized during the refining procedure. In contrast to others studies, the biodiesel fuel used during this project was SME (Soya Methyl Ester) with a 20% biodiesel content. This choice of fuel was made because of the increasingly important role that this type of biodiesel is playing in the European market and the future tendency to increase the percentage of biodiesel in the mixture with standard diesel fuel. The phosphorus contained in engine oil is a necessary additive to retain the antioxidant and anti-wear properties of the oil. This study examined the poisoning influences from the most commonly used phosphorus containing oil additive, Zinc Dithiophosphates (ZDDP), as well as a Zn-free, phosphorus containing anti-wear oil additive. This formulation provides information about the phosphorus poisoning process as caused by the engine oil in the absence of Zn in the oil additives. The results show how the phosphorus content in biodiesel fuel affects the functionality of the exhaust gas treatment systems and the importance of reducing the permitted content of phosphorus contained in the fuel. Reducing the phosphorus content in the fuel will conserve the functionality of the exhaust gas treatment systems during their operational life and thereby protect the environmental from emission pollutants. Outcomes Based Education (OBE) encourages teachers to develop learner centred and active learning approaches. In this research I explore the development of how a School Environmental Policy can contribute to active learning in the context of the National Curriculum Statement for Grades R-9 (NCS R-9). I employed a participatory action research approach in which I worked with other teachers in my school to develop a School Environmental Policy, and then implement associated lessons. In cycle 1 this research focused on the School Environmental Policy development processes. In cycle 2 the research focused on designing and implementing three Lesson Plans in Makana Public Primary School (in three phases). I used a range of data generation strategies such as observations, use of a reflective journal, semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, a workshop, photographs and document analysis to generate data for the study. All participants collaboratively discussed and agreed upon the research , and the two teachers who developed the lessons with me also reflected on the process of Lesson Planning and active learning, but I was responsible for the final interpretation presented in this thesis. The research indicates that the School Environmental Policy led to the planning of active learning processes and that the School Environmental Policy and the active learn ing approach are consistent with OBE policy and philosophy. The study also indicates that the School Environmental Policy and the active learning approach strengthened the use of Learning Outcomes, but not necessarily Assessment Standards and that the active learning approach promoted enquiry in lessons. The research further indicates that the School Environmental Policy and active learning processes contributed to school improvement and work towards a healthy environment. The School Environmental Policy also encouraged educators to address school community environmental issues and build stronger links with parents. The study also led to a set of recommendations to improve the School Environmental Policy and active learning process in ways that address the NCS requirements for learning and assessment.

The research indicates that the School Environmental Policy led to the planning of active learning processes and that the School Environmental Policy and the active learn ing approach are consistent with OBE policy and philosophy. The study also indicates that the School Environmental Policy and the active learning approach strengthened the use of Learning Outcomes, but not necessarily Assessment Standards and that the active learning approach promoted enquiry in lessons. The research further indicates that the School Environmental Policy and active learning processes contributed to school improvement and work towards a healthy environment. The School Environmental Policy also encouraged educators to address school community environmental issues and build stronger links with parents. The study also led to a set of recommendations to improve the School Environmental Policy and active learning process in ways that address the NCS requirements for learning and assessment.

In South Africa, it mostly invades the sub-tropical eastern and northern range. Mechanical and chemical control options are expensive and ineffective. A biocontrol programme was initiated in South Africa in 1961. To date, 22 insect species, and a fungus have been introduced, of these 10, and the fungus have established. Three indigenous lepidopteran species and an exotic generalist pest mealybug are also associated with the weed. The variable success of some of the agents released on L. camara worldwide has been ascribed to a few factors. One important aspect is the large range of varieties encountered in the field. It is therefore essential to be able to predict the possible establishment and impact of agents on many varieties. Laboratory trials on five of the established agents showed clear varietal preferences. In the field, most of the biocontrol agents had limited geographic ranges, linked to altitudinal conditions, as higher populations were recorded at low lying warm summer rainfall areas. A pink and orange flower corolla lobe and throat colour combination and plants with few to medium leaf hairs were most abundant in South Africa. Most of the agent species had individual preferences towards different flower colour combinations, as the agents built up different population levels on varieties in the field, within the suitable geographic region for the insect species. Eight agents preferred smooth leaved varieties, while three preferred hairy leaves, and three had no specific preference to leaf hairiness. Varietal preferences thus did play a significant role in agent populations and accompanied impact achieved in the field. New candidate agents need to be proven specific under quarantine conditions and the results extrapolated to predict specificity in the field, while avoiding potential non-target effects. Many authors have questioned the validity of laboratory host specificity trials. The conventional wisdom is that insects portray a far wider host range in the laboratory than what they would do in the field. In other words, laboratory studies measure the physiological host range of an agent and are conservative and usually don’t reflect the ecological host range of agents in the field. To avoid unnecessary rejections of biocontrol agents, this study has made a retrospective study of the host specificity of agents established in the field. Their laboratory and field host ranges were compared and it was found that virtually all the agents reflect similar or less non-target effects in the field than predicted during multiple choice trials. Of the 14 agents, only one introduced species, Teleonemia scrupulosa, and the indigenous species, Hypena laceratalis and Aristea onychote were able to sustain populations on non-target species in the field in the absence of L. camara. Insect populations on non-target species were much reduced compared to that on L. camara. Furthermore non-target effects were only recorded on plant species closely related to the target weed. The multiple choice trials therefore predict field non-target effects accurately. Predictions of non-target effects of candidate agents can therefore be accurately predicted by laboratory studies, in terms of species likely to be affected and to what extent. One field that need further study though is the impact of non-target effects, especially on Lippia species by L. camara biocontrol agents.

This study investigated the effective immobilisation of sulphate reducing bacterial cultures and proposed that the disarticulation of the electron donor and carbon source supply using such systems would create the basis for their application in the treatment of ‘clean’ inorganic waste streams. A functional and stable sulphate reducing culture was selected and following evaluation using a number of techniques, was immobilised by encapsulation within a calcium-alginate-xanthum gum membrane to give robust capsules with good sulphate reduction activity. The concept of disarticulation was investigated in a swing-back cycle where the carbon source was excluded and the electron donor supplied in the form of hydrogen gas in a continuous up-flow capsule-packed column reactor. Following a period of operation in this mode (4-12 days), the system was swung back to a carbon feed to supply requirements of cell maintenance (2-3 days). Three types of synthetic ‘clean’ inorganic waste stream treatments were investigated, including sulphate removal, neutralisation of acidity and heavy metal (copper and lead) removal. The results showed: • Sulphate removal at a rate of 50 mg SO₄²⁻L/day/g initial wet mass of capsules during three 4-day cycles of electron donor phase. This was comparable to the performance of free cell systems; • Neutralisation of acidity where influent pH values of 2.4 and 4.0 were elevated to above pH 7.5; • Copper removal of 99 and 85 % was achieved with initial copper concentrations of 2 and 60 mg/L respectively; • Percentage lead removal values of 49 and 78 % were achieved; This first report on the application of the concept of capsular immobilisation and disarticulation in the treatment of ‘clean’ inorganic waste streams will require future studies in order to extend the development of the full potential of the concept.

Projects aimed at the development of arts and culture in South Africa have followed troubled paths. While projects aimed at establishing discourse for this development have succeeded on many levels, the imperatives of showcasing, rather than implementing cultural concepts appropriate to South African contexts, have tended to dominate. When the Dakawa Art and Craft Project was established by the ANC, in 1992, in Grahamstown, as the locus for the deve! opment of an arts and culture discourse in the liberated South Africa, all seemed set for success. Yet, less than four years after opening, the Project was closed. While speculatory reasons for closure tended to focus on financial and administrative problems, the basis for this closure had its roots in problems of cultural understanding manifesting themselves at the Project. These reflected a lack of cultural understanding on the part of the ANC and SIDA, the Swedish administrators sent to the Project, and the lack of clear cultural guidelines on the part of the trainees to the Project itself. These reasons for the Project's failure are integral to an understanding of arts add culture development and needs in South Africa today. As other projects, aimed at the same issues of development grow, an understanding of the history of the Project's failure is essential, for it poses questions still in need of answers. Part One examines the historical significance of the Dakawa Art and Craft Project between 1982 and 1994, recording the reasons for its establishment, the path of implementation it followed, and the cultural misunderstandings it posed to development.
