System analysis of fatigue in pilots and co-pilots executing short-hall flight operations

- Description: Background: This study was conducted as part of Denel’s South African Regional Aircraft (SARA) development project. Regional aircraft have a maximum flight time of 60 minutes. Hence, the study focuses on matters pertaining to the short-haul flight context. Pilot fatigue has been recognised as a safety concern in the aviation industry. It impacts on pilot performance across the board, not least in the short-haul context. However, the specific factors that lead to pilot fatigue in short-haul operations have not been well researched. Research Aim: To identify and examine the factors which influence pilot/co-pilot fatigue in short-haul aviation contexts. Method: Fatigue is multifaceted, and has multiple definitions and descriptions. It is acknowledged as a complex phenomenon, the development of which is dynamically influenced by various factors. Thus, a systems approach based on the work system model by Smith and Carayon-Sainfort (1989) was adopted for this study. A systems analysis was conducted in two parts: 1) a literature analysis, and 2) expert interviews. Results: Both the literature analysis and the interviews indicated that pilot fatigue in short-haul flight operations represent composite system outcomes influenced by various factors. The factors identified were structured (systematised) into categories, namely organizational factors, task-related factors, environmental factors, factors linked to technology and tools, and non-work-related factors specific to the individual pilot. An example of a task-related factor would be the performance by pilots of multiple take-offs and landings; organizational factors include work time arrangements and duty scheduling (e.g. unpredictable schedule, early starts/late finishes, number of flight sectors in a shift, extended working hours, numerous consecutive work days, standby duties, flight, duty and rest limitations (regulations and guidelines); and short turnaround periods); environmental factors might include the small pressurised cockpit environment, movement restriction, very low humidity, low air pressure, vibrations, high noise levels, low light intensity light, and inclement weather); there are many examples of how tools and technology utilized by pilots might affect their fatigue levels; and finally, pilot-specific non-work-related factors would include things like the pilot’s age, health (lifestyle), family stress, work experience and sleep environment. All of these factors were identified during the literature analysis and have a significant bearing on how fatigue could present in short-haul pilots/co-pilots. Other important fatigue-related factors revealed during the expert interviews included, organizational culture, time management, health implications of fatigue, and management of fatigue. Conclusions: Pilot fatigue is a complex and multi-factorial physiological condition. There are many interacting components which contribute to pilot fatigue in short-haul operations. These should be viewed from an integrated perspective and holistic, systems-based approaches should be taken to manage these issues, particularly in the context of short-haul operations. This would optimize pilot performance and well-being and, most importantly, improve the safety of the work environment to enhance overall operation safety. Limitations: The study does not quantify the contributions made to pilot fatigue by the various factors explored. Therefore, care needs to be taken when designing and implementing interventions based on this research.

- Description: Aquatic insects are the most numerically abundant and diverse group of organisms found in lotic ecosystems in South Africa and the world over. They play vital roles in freshwater ecosystem functioning, processing nutrients and in turn forming integral links in stream food-webs. This thesis focussed on examining the macroinvertebrate fauna within three reaches of headwater streams of the Keiskamma River system: reaches that were considered to be fishless; reaches that were invaded by non-native salmonid species; and reaches that were dominated by native fish. I described the effects of predatory fish presence through detailed examination of macroinvertebrate assemblage composition; macroinvertebrate drift timing and density; and through niche utilisation determined from stable isotope data. Patterns in the macroinvertebrate assemblages of the headwaters of the Keiskamma River appear to be driven more strongly by flow rate and seasonal influences, but fish presence and biotope availability were also significant drivers. Niche shifts due to predator presence were not easy to detect and, while patterns of influence may have been evident, they were not found to be significant. However, I demonstrated that salmonids selectively feed on native fish species when the opportunity is presented, occupying significantly higher trophic levels when co-occurring with native fish than in invaded reaches where native fish are absent. Drift timing and density were demonstrated to be significantly different between reach for specific macroinvertebrate species from the Ephemeroptera and Plecoptera, under differing fish predation regimes, in agreement with what has been observed from studies in rivers elsewhere. In freshwater ecosystems of South Africa and worldwide, mitigation of negative effects of alien fishes through their removal using piscicides may also affect non-target organisms. To better understand the effects of just such a removal operation, employed for the first time in the history of freshwater conservation in South Africa, macroinvertebrate communities were assessed for non-target effects of rotenone. The fish eradication operations were demonstrated to have a short-term negative effect on the macroinvertebrate assemblage, through water quality index measurements and alteration of densities of macroinvertebrate taxa collected from stone surfaces. However, no long-term detrimental impact was observed as macroinvertebrate faunas returned to a comparable pre-treatment state within a year of each rotenone application.

- Description: The mandatory and voluntary carbon markets have both developed around the increasing trade of carbon offsets. In order to add legitimacy to an otherwise intangible commodity there has been a rise in the development of third party carbon certification standards, particularly in the voluntary market. These standards aim to provide independent, third party certification to projects that are developed specifically to generate and sell carbon offsets. South Africa has the opportunity to engage with these markets, but current participation in and certification of projects is sluggish. These projects have not taken off mainly due to the high transaction costs and lag times surrounding the current certification of projects', complex baseline methodologies, accounting uncertainty and the often bureaucratic systems surrounding the current voluntary carbon certification standards and methodologies. In order to overcome these pitfalls this project aimed to address these challenges through initiating the development of a preliminary South African voluntary carbon standard. This was done by: a) undertaking a critical assessment of the development of current carbon markets, with a particular focus on voluntary markets and third party certification, b) critically analysing the current voluntary carbon certification standards for best practices, pitfalls and weaknesses. To provide a better understanding of the historical development of voluntary certification standards, various established certification standards were evaluated, including the Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC), Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and ISO 14000 standards. This analysis focussed on the challenges they faced in acceptance and in particular how they have managed to operationalize sustainable development within the certification process. In order to explicitly ensure the incorporation of a sustainable development assessment of projects under the proposed standard, an expert workshop was held with 14 experts from a wide variety of disciplines. These experts identified the crucial sustainable development challenges facing South Africa. They identified 12 sub-themes and 44 indicators that could be used to measure and incorporate sustainable development indicators into the certification process. These were then further developed through using the 'Input – Output – Outcome – Impact' framework model which allowed the indicators to be organised and understood and thus practical. The analysis of the voluntary certification standards and the development of the sustainable development indicator framework were ultimately incorporated into the development of the proposed South African voluntary carbon standard. The key approach to this standard is the incorporation and focus of the proposed standard to ensuring the generation of net SD benefits and placing them at the same level as carbon within the project design and development, validation and verification process. The full and effective integration of these has been missing within current fully fledged voluntary carbon standards, as they often rely on a mixture of project design standards to achieve this. Offering the inclusion of all components into one standard, specifically designed for South Africa, will not only assure SD credentials but also increase transparency and understanding, and reduce costs. This thesis allowed for the development of innovative new ideas and process focussed specifically at including and mainstreaming South Africa’s developmental challenges into the certification process. This is the hoped that the standard will effectively certify South African based landscape restoration projects, but also decrease costs and increase efficiencies in order to encourage the development of these projects. The career development of adolescents in a children's home: a career systems perspective

- Description: Adolescents in a children’s home are exposed to unique experiences from an early age. These adolescents develop in a system with early deprivation experiences, which may result in developmental and adjustment problems that impact on several spheres of their lives, including their career development. Given the lack of South African career research on adolescents, the present study aimed to explore and describe the career development of adolescents in a children’s home. Specifically, this exploration takes the perspective of the systems theory framework of career development which is comprised of three interrelated systems, namely the individual, social, and the environmental/societal systems. The research approach was exploratory and descriptive in nature and was conducted both within a qualitative and quantitative framework. A workbook titled My System of Career Influences (McMahon, Patton, & Watson, 2003a), was used to collect the data. A non-probability, purposive sampling technique was employed to obtain the sample which consisted of 16 English-speaking adolescents, aged between 13 and17 years. Age, gender and culture were not considered in this study. The qualitative data was subjected to content analysis to identify themes, while frequency counts were used for the quantitative data. The results indicate that the present sample of adolescents is presently in the process of exploring and crystallizing their career choice, therefore fitting well within Super’s (1990) theoretical career stage of Exploration. The majority of the adolescents indicated that their present career situation involves making choices regarding schools, subjects, and participation in activities. Quantitative findings indicate that all influences within the three interrelated career systems have an influence on the career development of adolescents in a children’s home. Based on frequency counts, individual system influences such as personality, health, interests and abilities were identified as prominent influences. Within the social system, prominent xi influences included parents, friends, teachers and reading. Within the environmental/societal system, influences such as financial support, location of universities, availability of jobs, and opportunities to work overseas were identified as prominent influences. In addition, adolescents were able to reflect on their personalized diagram of system influences and thus to examine the inter-relatedness of the three systems. The present study highlights the applicability of both the systems theory framework and the My Systems of Career Influences measure in exploring and describing the career development of adolescents in the unique contexts within which they live. Limitations and recommendations for future research based on the present findings are suggested.
