BODIPY and porphyrin dyes for direct glucose sensing and optical limiting applications

- Description: A series of BODIPY dyes functionalised with boronic acid in the 3,5-positions were successfully synthesised and characterised by using various analytical techniques. The dyes were prepared through a slight modification of the conventional acid catalysed condensation method. Phenylboronic acid moieties were added as styryl groups at the 3,5-positions of the 1,3,5,7-tetrametylBODIPY cores using a modified Knoevengal condensation method. The addition of the styryls resulted in the main absorption band of the dyes red-shifting to the 630−650 nm region. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these dyes were studied to determine whether the dyes are suitable for use in the fluorescent, colourimetric and electrochemical detection of glucose. Boronic acid moieties were added as bioreceptor recognition elements because they have an affinity for carbohydrates and therefore would be able to bind and “detect” glucose. The series of BODIPY dyes did not show a “turn-on” fluorescence effect upon addition with glucose at the physiological pH. This was attributed on the basis of molecular modelling to the absence of an MO localised on the boronic-acid-substituted styryl moieties that lie close in energy to the HOMO and LUMO that facilitates the formation of an intramolecular charge transfer state. However, colourimetric changes that are visible to the naked eye are observed at basic pH when glucose was added to the dye solutions. The dyes exhibited favourable electrochemical behaviour and were able to detect glucose directly in this context when glassy carbon electrodes are modified through the drop dry method. A series of Sn(IV) porphyrins with thienyl and phenyl groups at the meso-positions were successfully synthesised and characterised. Pyridine and tetrabutyl axial ligands were added to the porphyrins to limit aggregation. The optical limiting properties of these porphyrins and three styrylated BODIPY dyes were studied in benzene and dichloromethane. Dyes were also embedded in polystyrene and studied as thin films to further gauge their suitability for use in optical limiting applications. Second-order hyperpolarizability, third-order susceptibly, non-linear absorption with reversible saturable absorption and the optical limiting threshold, were the parameters studied. Three of the four porphyrins and the three styrylated BODIPY dyes showed favourable optical limiting behaviour, which was further enhanced when the dyes are embedded in polymer thin films.

- Description: The purpose of this study was to identify and analyse in an historical context the major changes to the United States’ Internal Revenue Code during the period 1981-2001. This qualitative study relied on historical and legal interpretative approaches to better understand the political forces, personalities, and interactions that helped shape the legislative changes during this time period. The study focused on deep analysis of primary sources that best illuminated the latent narrative of four major tax actions: The Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981, the Tax Reform Act of 1986, The Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act of 1993, and The Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001. Archives, periodicals, and political rhetoric were examined in order to help shape the historical narrative. In addition, this study sought to identify major trends and paradigm shifts in the way United States tax policy was formed during the time period examined. The study identified several key trends that emerged in United States’ tax policy during this period: the use of budget deficits as political tools; factors associated with accomplishing tax reform; gaps between political rhetoric of individual politicians and their political action; and the virtual disappearance of a political middle ground in United States budget politics. The study concluded by noting the economic and political significance of budget deficits and stressing the need for fundamental changes in voter responsibility in helping achieve lasting, broad-based tax reform and budgetary responsibility in the United States.

Visual narratives of division in contemporary Palestinian art and social space

- Description: This study analyses artworks by contemporary Palestinian artists that respond to visual narratives of division in social space from a perspective grounded in a South African context. The state of Israel is built on Historic Palestine. Political Zionism has created an ideological narrative of division that positions people of the Jewish faith as the rightful heirs to the land on which Palestinians have lived for centuries. In order to execute their vision of an exclusively Jewish nation state, the founding pioneers of political Zionism colonised and ethnically cleansed Historic Palestine, establishing Israel in 1948. To sustain the exclusive claim to Palestinian land, Israel has divided the space and the people in it at every possible level. The greatest testament to these efforts is the Israeli apartheid wall and checkpoint security system that can be described as a monumental visual narrative of division. With each second that passes, Israel claims more Palestinian land and expands on existing fences, walls and barriers. It is no secret that the Occupied Palestinian Territories are rapidly transforming into open-air prisons. Israel has stolen the Palestinian horizon line and replaced it with a concrete wall that blocks out light, vision and optimism. Within the shadows of these conflicted, traumatised sites of division, Palestinian artists seek openings, cracks and loopholes that signal the possibility for physical and psychological transgression of these seemingly impenetrable structures of division. I have developed a creative methodology that can be understood through the metaphor of ‘looking with the skin’ as a way to identify and analyse visual narratives of division and artistic responses to sites of division in Palestinian social space. Looking with the skin combines aspects of participant observation (specifically the emphasis on engaged fieldwork) from the discipline of Anthropology with the method of visual analysis from the discipline of Art History. In my application of this method through primary fieldwork conducted within the Occupied Palestinian West Bank Territory from 2013 and 2014, I have learnt that Israel’s colonisation, military occupation and system of apartheid directly impacts the ability of Palestinian artists to make and disseminate their work as well as the choice of content within their artwork. The artworks analysed in this thesis by the artists Khaled Jarrar, Y ael Bartana, Larissa Sansour, Hasan Darahgmeh, Fareh Saleh and Emily Jacir can be positioned in relation to artworks by artists based within a South African context, namely Thando Mama, Serge Alain Nitegeka and Doung Anwar Jahangeer. In this thesis I present a combination of my own photographic documentation of sites of division with the West Bank OPT in relation to the specific artworks made by the artists mentioned above. In my analysis of the photographic documentation and the artists’ work I highlight similarities, parallels, threads and intersecting narratives that connect different artists to one another and to the sites of division they are responding to within their artistic practice. This study carves a small conceptual pathway through ideological and physical walls from South Africa to Palestine through the study of contemporary art and visual culture.

- Description: From Foreword by Dr Saleem Badat: Rhodes University has positioned itself as a research university that, alongside excellence in undergraduate teaching, also takes scholarship seriously. This has strongly shaped the intellectual identity of the university and, today, research income and expenditure are significant components of the university’s finances. Rhodes University values the scholar-teacher model of combining research with teaching and learning, and other scholarly activities. This has a strong influence on the quality of intellectual endeavour at the University, and is critical in advancing the University’s pursuit of a strong postgraduate trajectory. This is an opportunity to briefly reflect on research at Rhodes over the eight years of my Vice-Chancellorship. It is gratifying to see that scholarship and publishing has continued to blossom at Rhodes, and has also occurred over a wider academic base, and that there has also been increased enrolments of postgraduates, as part of overall University strategy. Postgraduate enrolments increased from 24% (1 397) in 2006 to 30% (2 302) in 2013, with considerable increases in the numbers of Masters and Doctoral students. Between 2006 and 2013, Honours and Postgraduate Diploma graduations increased from 453 to 719, Masters graduations increased by 73% (from 171 to 296) and Doctoral graduations by 70% (from 46 to 78). Concomitantly, there was an increase in the numbers of black and women PhD graduates.
