A critical analysis of the role of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) in the democratisation process in Zimbabwe from 2000 to 2016

In characterising the Zimbabwean state as a semi-authoritarian regime with a defiant ruling party, the thesis identifies and examines the significant challenges faced by the MDC in seeking democratisation, including within the realms of electoral, constitutional and legislative change. At the same time, the MDC suffered from significant internal problems including major splits, with the original MDC becoming MDC-Tsvangirai (MDC-T) in 2005. In focusing on the MDC and democratisation over the entire course of the party’s existence, the thesis is able to identify any important differences between the pre-GNU period, the GNU period and the post-GNU period. As well, it is able to consider the changing relationships between the MDC and the pro-democracy forces from which it first emerged, namely urban civil society and trade unions. The thesis concludes that the effectiveness of the MDC in bringing about democratisation has been highly uneven across the realms of electoral, constitutional and legislative change, and that any changes are necessarily tentative and subject to reversals given the ongoing semi-authoritarian regime in which the ruling ZANU-PF party has in effect fused with the state. Though there has been some evidence of democratic transition in Zimbabwe under the influence of the MDC (and MDC-T), more far-reaching democratic consolidation remains elusive. The fieldwork for the thesis is in large part based on a qualitative research methodology, involving key informant interviews, observations, primary documentation, and participation in political rallies and public lectures.

Since the beginning of the water hyacinth biological control initiative, the impact of biological control agent herbivory on water hyacinth’s population growth and fitness have been well documented; however, very few investigations have been conducted to determine whether herbivory elicits insect-induced responses by water hyacinth. Studies were conducted to determine the presence and function of water hyacinth insectinduced responses, using the plant activator, BION®, in attempt to determine the plant hormone-mediated pathways regulating the final expressions of insect-induced defences in response to herbivory by the phloem-feeder, Eccritotarsus catarinensis (Carvalho) (Hemiptera: Miridae) and the leaf chewer, Neochetina bruchi Hustache (Coleoptera: Curculionidae). BION® (Syngenta, acibensolar-S-methyl (benzothiadiazole)) is a dissolvable, granular formulation that contains a chemical analogue of the plant hormone, salicylic acid (SA), which typically regulates defences against pathogens. The application of BION® results in the induction of the SA-mediated defence pathways in plants (activation of defences against pathogens), and consequently the inhibition of the jasmonic acid (JA)- mediated defence pathways (de-activation of defences against insect herbivores). To test for induced defence responses in water hyacinth, plants treated with BION® and then subjected to herbivory, were compared to un-treated plants that were also subjected to herbivory, BION®-only treated plants and control plants. The application of BION® did not confer resistance against the two insect herbivores, as herbivory, reductions in chlorophyll content and plant growth (leaf production and second petiole lengths) significantly increased in comparison to non-BION® treated plants. Furthermore, palatability indices significantly increased (>1.00) in BION® treated plants, reflecting increased weevil preferences for SAinduced water hyacinth plants. This concluded that SA-mediated defences are not effective against insect herbivory in water hyacinth plants, but are in fact palatable to insect herbivores, which reflects ecological and physiological costs of SA-mediated defences (pathogen defences) in water hyacinth. Biochemical analyses of leaves exhibited increases in nitrogen content in BION® treated plants. These elevated levels of nitrogenous compounds account for the increases in mirid and weevil preferences for BION® treated plants. The increases in nitrogenous compounds are probably structural proteins (e.g. peroxidises), because leaves treated with BION® increased in toughness, but only when exposed to herbivory. Regardless, insect herbivory was elevated on these leaves, probably because the nitrogenous compounds were nutritionally viable for the insects.

- Description: The purpose of this research was to explore the ways in which a small, purposefully sampled group of Grade One isiXhosa-speaking children began the process of becoming literate in English as their second language. The research looked specifically for evidence of strategic behaviours in reading and writing which, according to Clay (200 I, 2005), form the foundation for self-extending systems and have the potential to accelerate learning. The research was guided by the principles of Clay's early intervention Reading and Writing Recovery. By Clay's definition, self-extending systems are literacy processing systems that work, that is, they enable children to continue to learn to read by reading and to write by writing. Within this context, the research explored the role of oral language in learning to read and write in English. Consideration was given to the potential for transfer of the principles that underlie Reading Recovery to South African mainstream classrooms in an attempt to raise literacy outcomes for all. This is a particularly urgent need in South Africa where many attempts to tum around poor trajectories of literacy learning do not seem to have the desired long term effects. The results of the research showed that the children began to actively engage in their English literacy learning within a network of strategies, primarily motivated by making meaning of their texts. The findings of the research suggested that a mismatch of needs and instructional procedures was evident here in this formative stage of second language literacy learning. The results suggested that children who were already educationally at risk for a multitude of reasons, were being set back even further by instructional approaches that were unresponsive to their linguistic needs.

Development and in vitro evaluation of a clobetasol 17-propionate topical cream formulation

- Description: One of the primary contributing factors to the escalating costs of health care is the high cost of innovator pharmaceutical products. As a consequence, health authorities in various countries and in particular in the developing world have identified generic prescribing and generic substitution as possible strategies to contain the escalating costs of health care provision. There is therefore a need for formulation scientists in developing countries to invest more time in the research and development of generic formulations. Clobetasol 17-propionate (CP) generic cream formulations containing 0.05% w/w of the drug were manufactured and characterized using in vitro testing. Formulation development studies were preceded by the development and validation of an RP-HPLC with UV detection for the quantitation and characterization of CP in innovator and generic cream formulations during formulation development and assessment studies. Furthermore the in vitro release ates of CP release from innovator and generic cream formulations were monitored using a validated in vitro release test method developed in these studies. The formulation of CP cream products was accomplished using a variety of commercially available mixed primary emulsifiers, such as Estol® 1474, Ritapro® 200, Emulcire® 61 WL and Gelot® 64. Successful formulations were selected based on their ability to remain physically stable immediately after manufacture and for 24 hours after storage at room temperature (22°C). Estol® 1474 was found to produce an unstable cream and was therefore not investigated further. The other three emulgents produced stable creams, but only the in vitro release profile of CP from a cream manufactured to contain Gelot® 64 was found to be statistically similar to that of the innovator formulation. Therefore the cream containing Gelot® 64 was selected as the most appropriate prototype generic cream formulation and was characterized in vitro in terms of CP content, viscosity, pH and in vitro release rate. Data generated from these studies were compared to those of the innovator product, Dermovate® cream, using statistical methods. The CP content, pH and in vitro release rate data of the CP formulation were similar to those of the innovator product, however the intrinsic viscosity of Dermovate® cream was almost three (3) times greater than the intrinsic viscosity of the test formulation developed using Gelot® 64. The CP cream formulation developed in these studies was stored for 4 weeks at 40 ± 2°C and 25 ± 5% RH in an incubator and the formulation was found to be stable. A formulation has been developed and assessed and found to be suitable for use as a topical semi-solid dosage form for CP.

- Description: Models that are used for predicting species' potential distributions are important tools that have found applications in a number of areas of applied ecology. The majority of these models can be classified as correlative, as they rely on strong, often indirect, links between species distribution records and environmental predictor variables to make predictions. Correlative models are an alternative to more complex mechanistic models that attempt to simulate the mechanisms considered to underlie the observed correlations with environmental attributes. This study explores the influence of the type and quality of the data used to calibrate correlative models. In terms of data type, the most popular techniques in use are group discrimination techniques, those that use both presence and absence locality data to make predictions. However, for many organisms absence data are either not available or are considered to be unreliable. As the available range of profile techniques (those using presence only data) appeared to be limited, new profile techniques were investigated and evaluated. A new profile modelling technique based on fuzzy classification (the Fuzzy Envelope Model) was developed and implemented. A second profile technique based on Principal Components Analysis was implemented and evaluated. Based on quantitative model evaluation tests, both of these techniques performed well and show considerable promise. In terms of data quality, the effects on model performance of false absence records, the number of locality records (sample size) and the proportion of localities representing species presence (prevalence) in samples were investigated for logistic regression distribution models. Sample size and prevalence both had a significant effect on model performance. False absence records had a significant influence on model performance, which was affected by sample size. A quantitative comparison of the performance of selected profile models and group discrimination modelling techniques suggests that different techniques may be more successful for predicting distributions for particular species or types of organism than others. The results also suggest that several different model design! sample size combinations are capable of making predictions that will on average not differ significantly in performance for a particular species. A further quantitative comparison among modelling techniques suggests that correlative techniques can perform as well as simple mechanistic techniques for predicting potential distributions.

Complex interactions involving the Cape fig, Ficus sur Forsskål, and its associated insects

- Description: The inadequacy of arbitrarily classifying interactions between species as antagonistic, neutral or mutualistic has become clear in recent years. Both direct and indirect interactions between species can vary between mutualism and antagonism, depending on the intrinsic and extrinsic contexts of the interaction. This study investigated the characteristics of an ant-plant-homopteran interaction in southern Africa. The polyphagous homopteran Hilda patruelis (Tettigometridae) feeds primarily on the trunk-borne fruiting branches and figs of the Cape fig tree, Ficus sur, and produces honeydew which attracts tending ants. Ten of the sixteen ant species/species groups present on F. sur tended H. patruelis, with Pheidole megacephala the most frequent attendant. Ants attracted to F. sur by H. patruelis honeydew or other liquid food sources also preyed on insects on the tree, including adults of the small agaonid fig wasps whose larvae feed on the ovules in the developing figs. One fig wasp species (Ceratosolen capensis) is also the tree's only pollinator. No benefits to H. patruelis from being tended by ants were detected, either in terms of reduced parasitism, or predation by a lycaenid caterpillar. A P. megacephala colony foraging on a F. sur tree was found to receive a high proportion of its likely energy requirements from the tree, mainly in the form of H. patruelis honeydew, during periods when it was bearing fruit. It is probable that the H. patruelis-P. megacephala interaction constitutes a direct mutualism at times, but that benefits to the homopteran are intermittent or weak. Both H. patruelis and ants benefitted from F. sur, directly or indirectly, through the provision of food (and for some ants, nesting sites). The removal of phloem sap by H. patruelis did not detectably reduce the trees' reproductive output, either in terms of pollinator or viable seed production. The indirect effects of ant and H. patruelis presence on the F. sur trees were on average positive, as ants preyed disproportionately heavily on fig wasp species parasitic on or competing with the pollinator, thus increasing pollinator production. Effects of ant presence on seed production were not investigated, but have been demonstrated as beneficial elsewhere. However, there is great varatlon both in the composition of the wasp fauna arriving to oviposit at different crops, and in ant densities per fig, on several temporal and spatial scales. This results in high variability in the effects of ants on the pollinator and, through it, the tree, from positive to zero and potentially even negative. Despite this conditionality of beneficial outcomes for the tree, the mean effect of ants on the F. sur population studied was to increase pollinator production by up to nearly 20%. This study is among the few to have demonstrated an overall benefit to a plant of having homopteran-tending ants present on it.

- Description: The inadequacy of arbitrarily classifying interactions between species as antagonistic, neutral or mutualistic has become clear in recent years. Both direct and indirect interactions between species can vary between mutualism and antagonism, depending on the intrinsic and extrinsic contexts of the interaction. This study investigated the characteristics of an ant-plant-homopteran interaction in southern Africa. The polyphagous homopteran Hilda patruelis (Tettigometridae) feeds primarily on the trunk-borne fruiting branches and figs of the Cape fig tree, Ficus sur, and produces honeydew which attracts tending ants. Ten of the sixteen ant species/species groups present on F. sur tended H. patruelis, with Pheidole megacephala the most frequent attendant. Ants attracted to F. sur by H. patruelis honeydew or other liquid food sources also preyed on insects on the tree, including adults of the small agaonid fig wasps whose larvae feed on the ovules in the developing figs. One fig wasp species (Ceratosolen capensis) is also the tree's only pollinator. No benefits to H. patruelis from being tended by ants were detected, either in terms of reduced parasitism, or predation by a lycaenid caterpillar. A P. megacephala colony foraging on a F. sur tree was found to receive a high proportion of its likely energy requirements from the tree, mainly in the form of H. patruelis honeydew, during periods when it was bearing fruit. In situ community grazing rates were measured from January 1983 to March 1985 using 14C-Iabelled Chlorella . Zooplankton succession and community grazing rates are examined in relation to food quantity and quality. Experiments measuring species-specific filtration rates on labelled Chlorella and Microcystis colony fractions revealed low filtration rates for small-bodied cladoceran species on cyanophyte colonies. Daphnia fed significantly on Microcystis colonies up to 60-100 ).μm but Daphnia filtration rates on Chlorella were suppressed by ~707. during the mid-summer increase in Microcystis abundance. Filtration rates of small cladoceran species were not suppressed by MicpocystisJ which was not an important food resource . Cladoceran filtration rate:body length models were developed for Chlorella and Microcystis colony fractions as food. Multiple regression models explained variance in filtration rates on these foods as a function of body length, food type and size, grazer species and temperature (in order of significance). Inclusion of food quality factors such as cyanophyte colony size seems justified in models of plankton feeding in eutrophic or hypertrophic lakes. Methods for in situ measurement of zooplankton filtration rates on 'H-thymidine-Iabelled natural bacteria were improved for use under hypertrophic conditions, and associated isotope-adsorption errors were measured. Community, species-specific and length-specific filtration rates on bacterioplankton were measured (late-spring to late-summer 1986-87) . Ceriodaphnia exhibited no preference for bacteria or Chlorella. Other cladocerans preferred the algal food . Algal/bacterial selectivity coefficients of the zooplankton community revealed an increased algal preference following the mid-summer shift to phytoplankton dominance by largely inedible Microcystis. This implies that bacterioplankton is not an important food resource for the summer cladoceran community. Estimates of the contribution of bacterial carbon to the daily zooplankton carbon requirements are low. The implications of all results are discussed in relation to seasonal succession, the clear-water phase', and biomanipulation in this hypertrophic reservoir.

- Description: Union Section of Rustenburg Patinum Mines is situated in the northwestern part of the Bushveld Complex, some twenty kilometres north of the Pilanesberg Alkaline Complex. The mining lease area covers a roughly triangular segment of Lower, Critical and Main Zone rocks, transgressed to the north and south by magnetite-bearing ferrogabbro of the Upper Zone. The Main Zone at Union Section is the focus of this study. The prime source of sample material for the study is the deep exploration borehole SK2, but additional, supplementary samples were collected on surface and underground, as well as from a second surface exploration borehole, SK4. In line with the recommendations of SACS (1980), the top of the Critical Zone, and therefore the base of the Main Zone, is taken to be the top of the Bastard Cyclic Unit. Sharpe (1985) suggested that the succession from the base of the Main is an isotopically separate entity Zone up to the Pyroxenite Marker from the rest of the Bushveld layered succession. This is not strictly true, as there is evidence that more than one parental magma was involved in the formation of this interval. It is, however, true that there are fundamental differences, particularly in isotopic makeup, between the Main Zone rocks below the pyroxenite Marker and those above (the latter having been assigned by Molyneux (1970) to subzone C of the Main Zone). Kruger et al. (1986, in press) suggested that the Pyroxenite Marker marks the base of the Upper Zone, and this convention is adhered to here. The implication of this is that the rocks which formerly constituted subzone C of the Main Zone are now considered part of the Upper Zone. The Main Zone rocks below the pyroxenite Marker were originally subdivided by Molyneux (1970) into two subzones, A and B. The results of the present study indicate that this subdivision is not justified. Instead, eight units have been distinguished in the Main Zone on geochemical, petrological and mineralogical bases. Each of these units is characterized by a coherent set, or progression, of chemical and petrological characteristics. The specific assignment of genetic connotations to these units has been deliberately avoided , at least until further studies of the Main Zone prove this to be justified. The demarcation of the eight units is illustrated in the composite diagram (Fig. 34) in the back pocket of this work, and the reasons for the subdivisions are listed in Table 6 (at the end of chapter 7 of this thesis). Until the late 1970's, it was thought that most layered cumulates formed by crystal settling (Wager and Brown, 1968). More recently, there has been a fundamental conceptual change, and many workers now believe that most cumulate rocks formed by in situ crystallization at the floor and walls of the magma chamber (McBirney and Noyes, 1979, Irvine, 1980a; Campbell, 1987). There is, however, some evidence for the physical separation of phases undergoing cotectic crystallization, particularly in the Upper Critical Zone and lower part of the Main Zone (Eales et al., 1986). This process, which has been alluded to in the past by various authors (Ferguson and Botha, 1963; Vermaak, 1976) involves the flotation of early-formed plagioclase crystals due to their positive bouyancy in tholeiitic liquids. The result is an apparent decoupling of the chemistry of pyroxene and plagioclase, as in unit IV of the Main Zone, where plagioclase becomes more anorthitic upwards, whilst pyroxene becomes more iron-rich. There is some substantial evidence, particularly in reversals in the strontium isotope initial ratio and the orthopyroxene Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratio , for multiple intrusion in the Main Zone. Although the largest and most important magma influx in the Main Zone was a high-R₀ aluminous tholeiite, as suggested by Sharpe (1985), the intrusive history of the Main Zone is believed to be far more complex than Sharpe (op. cit.) suggested. Significantly, there is strong evidence for small influxes of Upper Zone-type (Fe-rich tholeiite) magma in the upper reaches of the Main Zone. These are believed to be precursors to the major influx of Upper Zone-type magma at the pyroxenite Marker (Kruger et al, 1986, in press). The fate of intercumulus liquids in cumulate rocks has recently recieved substantial attention (Sparks et al., 1985; Morse, 1986; Barnes, 1986: Campbell, 1987). It is believed that the migration, or at least redistribution, of intercumulus liquids has played a vital role in modifying fractionation trends in the Main Zone. - Description: This thesis, which is intended for inclusion in "The Piano Sonatas of the 18th century in Austria" (Vol.3 in the publication series "Contributions the the development of the Piano Sonata") aims to evaluate Haydn's position within the history of the piano sonata. In spite of the widespread popularity of Haydn's sonatas among professional musicians and amateurs, surprisingly little has yet been published regarding the compositional aspects of these works. The main contributions of musicological value were written by Hermann Abert, Karl Geiringer, Walter Georgii and William S.Newman. The recent studies, published as Vol.l and Vol.2 in the above mentioned series, made it possible to trace in much greater detail the various formative factors that influenced the form and style of Haydn's piano sonatas. Moreover, it proved the composer's personal merits not only in the development of this specific genre but also in the creation of 'The International Viennese Language of the High-Classical Period'. The newly gained insight, in turn, should lead to an even higher appreciation of the great master, who utilized the achievements of his predecessors and contemporaries in an original and individual manner and thereby gained a position far superior to that of many other composers.
