Selected stakeholders’ views on the use of tablet computers in learning and teaching – a South African case study at a university

- Description: The popularity of mobile technologies has greatly influenced the people of all ages, especially adolescents. Tablet computers as part of mobile technologies, were launched in colleges and universities in many countries to supplement and complement learning and teaching. However, research reports based on the effectiveness of the use of tablet computers in higher education institutions in South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province are scarce. In order to address the deficiency, this study examined the views of stakeholders such as students, lecturers and managers on the use of tablet computers for learning and teaching in one of the Eastern Cape universities. The research adopted the Post-Positivist paradigm and mixed method approach. The theoretical frameworks were Constructivism and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge. The sample consisted of (a) 155 students from a population of 254 extended-stream National Diploma students in Information and Communication Technology and National Diploma Electrical Engineering cohorts; (b) 14 lecturers from a relevant population of 25; and, (c) 16 managers from a population of 20. Three separate questionnaires as well as interview protocols for each of the stakeholder cohorts provided the core data. All members in the sample were surveyed. The researcher opted to be an outsider and received assistance from a few qualified trained academics to administer the questionnaire to students in different cohorts in order to minimise data bias. Only 18 students, five lecturers and nine managers were interviewed. Quantitative data were captured manually into Statistical Package for Social Sciences (version 24) and they were analysed using descriptive and inferential analysis: Analysis of Variance and Independent Samples t-test. Qualitative data were transcribed and analysed using thematic analysis to generate major themes and sub themes for the sub-research questions. Main strengths of using tablets from the findings of the study were (a) tablets motivated students in learning and lecturers in teaching (b) students understood the different styles of learning (c) enhanced students’ engagement and collaboration in learning. Main weakness of using tablets were students’ use of tablets for personal work and social networking during class hours was causing distractions to lecturers and other students. Generally, the evidence shows that strengths were greater than the weaknesses. It should also be noted that all stakeholders were positive and not statistically significantly different from each other in their views towards the use of tablets for learning and teaching in university classroom. However, students had views different from lecturers on the advantages and disadvantages of using tablets. The variance could be due to new students or new lecturers’ ignorance in the effective use of tablets and this might change as their familiarity in the use of the device improves. The research report makes a few recommendations which include training to all students and lecturers on the effective use of tablet computers for learning and teaching and installation of relevant applications before the commencement of each academic year. Moreover, the Information and communication technology technical staff must prevent students from visiting unwanted and restricted sites by keeping a network based tracker and blocker software application.

The study revealed that Life Orientation teachers experience challenges, lack of training, lack of support by different stakeholders, the negative attitude towards the subject by both learners and Life Orientation teachers, the shortage of Life Orientation teachers, the subject is not valued like other subjects, poor parental involvement by parents and constant rotation of Life Orientation teachers. As a result, learners were not fully equipped in terms of knowledge and skills to choose the right subjects for specific careers and instead, some relied on their intuition while others relied on their peers. The study recommended that the Department of the Basic Education should appoint competent staff to address the unique academic/educational, psycho-social and career/vocational problems faced by learners in school, and for them to train the Life Orientation teachers as well. The subject should be taught by permanently by qualified teachers without being shifted to other subjects and to ensure that such teachers gain experience in the subject. This would add status and value to the subject.

Differentiating engagement of opportunity identification: a grounded theory study of Chinese immigrant entreprenuers

- Description: The aim of this study was to develop a substantive grounded theory describing how Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs who own and operate small retail businesses in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa identify opportunities in the business environment. The substantive grounded theory was developed using the prescripts of grounded theory proposed by Strauss and Corbin (1990). In this respect, a substantive grounded theory called differentiating engagement of opportunity identification was developed from a sample of 41 qualitative interviews conducted with Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs. The study found that Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs identified various opportunities (startup, sales, operational, relational) in the business environment through their dynamic interactions and relationships with different stakeholders. These stakeholders mainly included family members, local employees and customers. The Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs displayed two interactional processes in their interactions with stakeholders, namely engaging in and disengaging from interactions. These interactional processes enabled the Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs to identify opportunities and operate their small businesses in the business environment. Assumptions held about the interactions and relationships with stakeholders in the host community were central to the interactional processes displayed by the Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs. As they operated their small businesses, the Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs would engage in interactions with customers who were perceived as favourable (approachable). From these interactions with favourable (approachable) customers, the Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs were able to identify opportunities (gaining customer insight of opportunity), whereas they would disengage from interactions with customers perceived as unfavourable (unapproachable). In this respect, they would delegate their local employees (actions of delegation in business) with the responsibility of interacting with unfavourable and hostile customers. Additionally, the Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs would engage in interactions with local employees to gain insight into local indigenous products and identify opportunities in the host community. In order to identify other opportunities (operational, relational), the Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs would disengage from interactions with local employees and engage in interactions with other stakeholders such as family members. The varying differentiated interactions and relationships established by the Chinese immigrant entrepreneurs with different stakeholders created a relational context which enabled the identification of opportunities in the host environment. Thus, the findings of the present study and the substantive grounded theory developed (differentiating engagement of opportunity identification) are discussed from the perspective of social capital, social exchange theory and Chinese cultural values. Finally, the theory developed in the present study contributes to the understanding of the processes of how social capital and relationships contribute to the process of identifying opportunities and operating a small business by immigrant entrepreneurs within a host environment.

Structural analysis of proteases from South African HIV-1 (subtype C) patients undergoing Lopinavir treatment, using comparative modeling, ligand-docking and molecular dynamics

Representatives from this class of inhibitors are gradually losing their efficacy due to development of resistance mutations from HIV-1. In this study, compounds from the South African Natural Compound Database (SANCDB) were screened against HIV-1 protease models generated from protease protein sequences belonging to 11 South African HIV patients before and after treatment with Lopinavir. The effect of Lopinavir on the alteration of drug-binding affinity before and after treatment is investigated by molecular docking of the protease against other FDA-approved drugs and detection of mutation types using the HIVdb tool. A network representation of hydrogen bonding between docked ligands and their receptor proteases has been developed and a profiling method of visualizing receptor-ligand docking energies at the local level is presented. Four potential HIV-1 protease inhibitors were identified from the list of 599 natural compounds on the basis of receptor conformation and binding free energy. Ligand stabilities were monitored by 20ns molecular dynamics runs using the GROMACS software.

The role of strategic leadership on competitive advantage and innovation performance are investigated within this. Research purpose: To determine whether strategic leadership has an effect on competitive advantage and innovation performance in SMMEs. Secondly, to determine if innovation performance has an effect on competitive advantage. Motivation for the study: Contradictory views still exist on the concept of strategic leadership and its effect on competitive advantage and innovation performance and the effect of innovation performance on competitive advantage in SMMEs. This study contributes to these views within the South African SMME context. Research design, approach and method: A cross-sectional survey design was used and a questionnaire self-administered to a sample of 275 SMMEs in the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality drawn through simple random sampling from a population 950 SMMEs available from the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC) database. Main findings: The result showed that strategic leadership have a positive effect on competitive advantage and innovation performance in SMMEs. Furthermore, the results showed that there is a positive effect of innovation performance on competitive advantage in SMMEs. Practical implications: More is needed to develop strategic leadership. This can be done through leadership training and development, support from government of leaders of SMMEs and finally, a leader can take personal efforts to acquire competencies that allow them to make better decisions in managing the small business. Contribution: The study advances theory on leadership by showing its role on competitive advantage and innovation performance.

The design allows using both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods to elicit implicit and explicit information from the same case through pattern-matching; a technique linking several pieces when a holistic and in-depth investigation is required. The sample of the study consisted of 24 school principals, 24 HoDs, 24 SGB members, 24 educators, 24 educators‟ union members and 24 learners who were conveniently selected from 24 secondary schools across Vhembe District. Survey data were obtained from school principals, HoDs, SGB members, educators, educators‟ union members and learners regarding the ways and degree to which participants are involved in school incidents, decision-making processes, and their own experiences regarding safe, caring and child-friendly schools. In terms of data analysis, validation indicates concurrent and construct validity obtained by combining participant‟s responses from interviews and self-report questionnaires based on experiences of incidents from their schools. Statistically significant results point the way to validating the approaches taken as best practices. The findings reveals among others that the factors contributing to learner aggression include family factors, environmental factors and school-related factors, whilst the most common forms of learner incidents in schools are verbal violence, physical violence and bullying. The results also indicate that a safe school climate is not enough for learners to speak freely and report unwanted sexual experiences. The study concludes with the role that the school, parents and the Department of Education can play in addressing learner problems in schools.

- Description: This thesis analyses conflicts in the role of business as a social partner in the South African economy by studying skills development in the Border-Kei Region. Skills development is a key component of the South African government’s programme of labour market regulation and is founded on a participatory approach. The skills development framework requires the participation and co-operation of multiple social partners but relies heavily on the role of business in the attainment of national and sectoral skills development objectives. Unfortunately, however, there are significant conflicts in the role which business is expected to play which consequently hinder the efficiency of the framework and the likelihood that that these objectives will be realised. One of the most pertinent examples of these conflicts is the voluntary nature of the skills development framework, which incentivises but does not compel organisations to invest in training and development. Other conflicts include dissonances between national and employer led strategies and organisational disincentives to engage in training and development. This qualitative study uses an interpretive approach to study how and to what extent the Skills Development Act is implemented in selected organisations in Buffalo City as well as studying the issues pertaining to the implementation process. By using a purposive sampling approach, this research includes both primary data in the form of semi-structured interviews and secondary data in the form of documentary sources. The data represents the perspectives of business, labour and government and provides significant depth of insight into the discussions and issues surrounding skills development in Buffalo City. This dissertation argues that South Africa’s vocational training system, institutionalised through appropriate legislation, may not be sufficient to mobilise social partners, and of primary concern in this research – business – to invest in skills development. It suggests that extensive reliance on business is an insufficient way in which to upskill the labour market. However, with few alternatives to this approach, it is subsequently essential that business is encouraged to buy into the collective interest of skills development objectives. - Description: A study to assess the potentials of some commensal bacteria that belong to Staphylococcus, Acinetobacter and Stenotrophomonas genera as reservoirs of antibiotic resistance determinants in the environment of Nkonkobe Municipality of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa, was carried out using standard microbiological and molecular techniques. A total of 120 Staphylococcus isolates which consisted of Staphylococcus haemolyticus (30%), Staphylococcus aureus (23.3%) from pig; Staphylococcus capitis (15%) from goat; Staphylococcus heamolyticus (5%) and Staphylococcus xylosus (15%) from cattle and other Staphylococci (11%) from dead chicken and pigs were isolated. About 23.3% of these isolates were coagulase positive and 76.7% were coagulase negative. This difference in prevalence along coagulase production divide was statistically significant (p < 0.05). Eighty-six Acinetobacter species (Acinetobacter baumannii/calcoaceticus and Acinetobacter haemolyticus) were also isolated from Alice and Fort Beaufort towns samples, while 125 Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolates were from grass root rhizosphere (96%) and soil butternut root rhizosphere (4%). Between 75-100% of the Staphylococccus species were resistant to Penicillin G, tetracycline, sulphamethaxole and nalidixic acid; about 38 % were methicillin resistant, consisting of 12.6% methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) from pig and a total of 12% vancomycin resistant were observed. Also, 12% of the isolates were erythromycin resistant while 40.2 % were resistant to the third generation cephalosporin, ceftazidime. The antibiotic resistance genes vanA, VanB, eryA, eryB, eryC were not detected in all the phenotypically resistant Staphylococccus species, but mec A gene and mph genes were detected. In the Acinetobacter species, a wide range of 30-100% resistance to penicillin G, ceftriazone, nitrofurantoin, erythromycin, and augmentin was observed. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) revealed the presence of Tet(B) and Tet(39) genes in these species, while Tet (A), Tet(M) and Tet(H) were absent. Also, 9.3% of the Acinetobacter species showed phenotypic production of extended spectrum beta lactamases (ESBLs) while 3.5% were positive for the presence of blaCTX-M-1 genes. The Stenotrophomonas maltophilia isolates showed varying resistance to meropenem (8.9%), cefuroxime (95.6 %), ampicillin-sulbactam (53.9%), ceftazidime (10.7%), cefepime (29.3 %), minocycline (2.2%), kanamycin (56.9%), ofloxacin (2.9%), levofloxacin (1.3%), moxifloxacin (2.8%), ciprofloxacin (24.3%), gatifloxacin (1.3%), polymyxin B (2.9 %), cotrimoxazole (26.1%), trimethoprim (98.6%), aztreonam(58%) and Polymyxin B (2.9 %). The isolates exhibited significant susceptibility to the fluoroquinolones (74.3-94.7 %), polymycin (97.1%) and meropenem (88.1%). Only sul3 genes were the only sulphonamide resistance gene detected among the trimethoprim-sulphamethoxazole resistant isolates. The observed multiple antibiotic resistance indeces (MARI) of >2 for Staphylococcus species, Acinetobacter species and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia suggest that they have arisen from high-risk sources where antibiotics are in constant arbitrary use resulting in high selective pressure. The presence of tetracycline resistance genes in Acinetobacter species justifies the observed phenotypic resistance to oxytetracycline and intermediate resistance to minocycline. High phenotypic resistance and the presence of some resistance genes in Staphylococcus species is a possible threat to public health and suggests animals to be important reservoirs of antibiotic resistance determinants in the environment. Indiscriminate use of antibiotics induces this kind of antibiotic resistance and should be discouraged. Personal hygiene is encouraged as it reduces the load of Acinetobacter species contacted from the environment that may be difficult to control. Commensal Stenotrophomonas maltophilia are as important as their clinical counterparts due to their roles in opportunistic infection, antibiotic resistance and their associated genes, especially sul gene. Personal hygiene is hereby advocated especially when in contact with soil, plants and plants’ rhizospheric soil.

- Description: This work reports on the successful synthesis, characterisation and photophysical properties of new asymmetric metal free, magnesium and zinc phthalocyanines. The synthesis of symmetrical phthalocyanines is also reported. A selection of phthalocyanines have been conjugated, covalently linked, encapsulated or mixed with selected of drug delivery agents which include gold or silver nanoparticles, poly-L-lysine, liposomes and folic acid. The influence of delivery agent on the photophysical and photochemical properties of conjugated phthalocyanine is investigated. The studies showed that the Au nanoparticle significantly lowered the fluorescence quantum yield values of the phthalocyanines. The photodynamic activity of Zn phthalocyanine-ε-polylysine conjugates in the presence of nanoparticles towards the inactivation of Staphylococcus aureus showed high photoinactivation in the presence of silver nanoparticles. The presence of silver nanoparticels from the minimal inhibition concentration (MIC₅₀) studies showed remarkable growth inhibition for the tested conjugates even at low concentrations. The conjugate also showed no dark toxicity when evaluated using the chick choriallantoic membrane (CAM) assay. The efficiency of selected zinc phthalocyanine as photodynamic therapy (PDT) agents was investigated. The production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and phototoxicity of the photosensitizers were assessed. Healthy fibroblast cells and breast cancer (MCF-7) cells were treated with either free phthalocyanine or phthalocyanine bound to either gold nanoparticles or encapsulated in liposomes. Cell viability studies showed the optimum phototoxic effect on non-malignant cells to be 4.5 J.cm⁻². The PDT effect of the liposome bound phthalocyanine showed extensive damage of the breast cancer cells. Gold nanoparticles only showed a modest improvement in PDT activity.

An attempt to improve the quality of learning in EAS resulted in a research project at the University of Zimbabwe that aimed to transpose innovative constructivist pedagogy from a western context to a rural African one. This writer has used a definition of teacher change as social change and a belief that sustainable pedagogical change involves a transformative process. The research backs up previous findings that failure to recognise and deal with how people actually experience the change process, accounts for much failure of social change. This qualitative research has attempted to provide some understanding of the complex interrelationships of factors that affected expected change in teaching style. - Description: What has come to be labelled as 'the environment crisis' has roots in the structures and orientations of modern societies. True to our modernist ways we call on, or offer, education and research, experts and science, to address our socio-ecological concerns. This study set out to identify research priorities in environmental education from within the institutional setting of a university and within the context of environmental and political change in southern Africa and epistemological shifts in educational research traditions. The emergent research design allowed for a progressive clarification of theoretical vantage point: from an instrumental listing of priorities, through the participatory development of a critical and consensual framework for research, to a reflexive description of a landscape of shifting priorities. I collected data over a 3-year period, in inter alia 38 semi-structured interviews, workshops with some 150 participants, focus group discussions, documents and conferences. Participants' professional contexts included environmental education, natural resource management, social and biophysical sciences, development, formal and non-formal education, funding agencies, academic and non-academic settings. My engagement with the emerging discourses revealed patterns and inconsistencies in participants' views on research, environmental education, change and research priorities. I identified three orientations - Research for Management to Restore Order to Nature and Society, Research to Resolve Practitioners' and Communities' Problems, and Research for Radical Reconstruction - in the emerging landscape. These orientations were accompanied by change models and themes (discourses of difference and 'othering', instrumental views of education and research and accumulative knowledge, a conceptual theory-practice gap) which limited their potential for transformation towards sustainable living. They presented solutions cut from the same modernist cloth as the environment crisis. An emerging Reflexive perspective in and on environmental education research showed potential as a transitionary orientation outside modernist assumptions. I outline research priorities from this perspective. Reflexivity reveals the myths of expert-driven, instrumental and institutionalised research separated from environmental education and based upon rationalistic interpretations of science. It opens up possibilities for transformative knowledge emerging from 're-search' based versions of education as a process of, rather than a means to, social change.

The effect of teaching text organisation on reading in English as a second language

- Description: This research investigated the effect of teaching text organisation on reading in English second language to schoolgirls. All subjects underwent a training programme of five one-hour sessions on consecutive school days. The experimental group were trained in the use and recognition of top-level organisation as a reading strategy, based on work done by Bartlett (1978) and Carrell (1985). The control group were trained in unrelated grammar exercises. A pre-test was administered to each group before their programme began. Post-test 1 was administered immediately after the training was completed, and Post-test 2, three weeks later. These tests required a written recall of two passages once they had been read, and an answer to a question on their organisation. The null hypotheses stated that the experimental group's training in the use and recognition of top-level organisation as a reading strategy would make no difference in their ability to read and recall information or to recognise and use top-level organisation in their recalls. For the quantity of information recalled, no differences were found in the Pre-test and Post-test 1; a statistically significant difference was found in Post-test 2 in favour of the experimental group. For the quality of information recalled, the control group remembered more top-level idea units in the Pre-test; there was no difference in Post-test 1; the experimental group did better in three out of five levels in Post-test 2. There was no difference in the Pretest in either group's use of the passage's top-level organisation to structure recalls, but the experimental group did better in both post-tests. The control group did better in the Pre-test in recognising the passage's top-level organisation, but the experimental group did better in both post-tests. The null hypotheses were rejected as the experimental training made a difference, although this difference only became apparent three weeks later, and not immediately after the training. The experimental group's nullifying the control group's Pre-test advantage in Post-test 1 and surpassing it in Post-test 2, powerfully supports Bartlett's and Carrell's findings that teaching the strategy did make a difference and that this effect could be maintained over three weeks

The life history of a minnow, Barbus Anoplus, in a man-made lake in South Africa

- Description: Aspects of the life history strategy of Barbus anoplus Weber were studied in a turbid man-made lake (P.K. Ie Roux impoundment, Orange River system, South Africa). The minnow has successfully colonized the shoreline of the P.K. Ie Roux impoundment, where the preferred habitats of the chubbyhead barb are flooded stream beds, erosion gullies and flooded ruderal communities. B. anoplus reaches sexual maturity in one year, at a length of about 40mm FL. They have a multiple spawning habit, with the first spawn in November or December and the second spawn in February or March. A part of the adult population undertakes a spawning migration up inflowing tributaries, while the other part breeds along the shoreline. The eggs and young develop rapidly and a proportion of the protolarvae float near the water surface, where they are probably dispersed by water currents. Most of the males die off after their second summer, whereas many females live into a third summer. Females also attain a larger maximum size (73mm FL) than males (60mm FL). The importance of increasing the reproductive potential of B. anoplus by multiple spawning is discussed. Feeding studies indicate that B. anoplus are opportunistic predators on invertebrates. The feeding habits of minnows collected from four different habitats varied. Minnows collected in the open water fed mainly on zooplankton, while shoreline populations fed on chironomid larvae and zooplankton. The most varied diet was found in fish living in a well-vegetated tributary of the impoundment which was not subject to inundation. B. anoplus is basically an r-strategist (i.e. it is small in size, shortlived, males have bright colouration, high seasonal reproductive potential). These characteristics enable the species to colonize and successfully inhabit unstable environments and probably accounts for the fact that it is the most widespread species south of the Limpopo River system. It is recommended that B. anoplus be considered as a candidate in southern Africa for further studies on life history strategies.

- Description: [Preface] The detailed geological survey of the country described in this bulletin commenced in 1953 and was completed in 1956 with the mapping of 1,480 square miles of country. Information is supplied on 227 mines which produced mica alone or both mica and beryl, and 134 mines which produced only beryl. In addition, wolfram, gold, graphite, kyanite and rutile deposits and mines are described. Mineral outputs are given up to end of 1959. The field mapping and writing of the bulletin is entirely the work of Mr. Wiles. Mapping of the Field has established that, with a few exceptions, a metamorphic control has operated in the development of economic sheet mica and has led to the conclusion that very many of these pegmatites are composite bodies which have derived their material from two sources: one metamorphic and the other igneous. This conclusion was arrived at after a detailed petrographic investigation of the metamorphic rocks. The map at the end of this bulletin was drawn by Mr.A. H. Barrie and the diagrams are largely the work of Mr. D. O. L. Levy. Chemical analyses are by Messrs. A. J. Radford and E. Golding and were made in the Geological Survey Laboratory. Some of the photographs are by H. J. Cotterel of the Geological Survey while the remainder were taken by the Planning and Technical Services of the Federal Ministry of Home Affairs (formerly the Federal Information Department). It gives me pleasure to acknowledge the assistance and facilities offered the Department by mining men and residents in the district.
