Barriers to, and enablers of urban tree planting in low-cost housing areas: lessons from participatory learning processes in South Africa

- Description: The recent pronouncement of low-cost housing areas as sustainable human settlements came with an expectation for their development in line with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11. Unfortunately, the historical legacy and various socio-economic, socio-political, and socio-cultural dynamics characteristic of these areas have proven it challenging for them to conform to all requirements of urban sustainability, as evidenced in part by the virtual lack of greenspaces and urban trees. Through a three-tier inquiry of urban tree planting in low-cost housing areas using inductive and deductive mixed methods approaches, the aim of this research was to investigate the barriers to, and enablers of, tree planting in low-cost housing areas, and explore participatory learning opportunities to address the challenges and enhance the enablers. In the first segment, a participatory urban forest governance conceptual framing lens was used to situate the various actors in the development of the low-cost housing area urban forest and the dynamics of their involvement in that regard. Inquiry focused on an overview of tree planting across South Africa using key informant interviews, observations and document analysis. Secondly, distribution of trees, and barriers and enablers of tree planting in selected low-cost housing areas in the Eastern Cape province using household surveys, observations, key informant interviews and document analysis were investigated. Finally, drawing on interventionist methodology and adoption of Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), the third segment tested scenarios of tree planting in three different small towns through focus group discussions and knowledge-sharing awareness events about trees and tree planting using an activity systems approach. Findings from the first segment ascertain the national Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries (DEFF) as the custodian of forestry, and by extension urban forestry in South Africa. Municipalities are tasked with implementing greening plans and strategies for public space planting, while private businesses collaborate with entities to contribute to tree-planting as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). Civil society, including residents and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) also contribute, especially for private space planting. However, there are currently very few initiatives implemented in low-cost housing areas. An assessment of ten tree planting initiatives revealed that the DEFF is the most common partner and stakeholder, and normally provides resources such as funding and trees. Most programs reported having undertaken community engagement before and during the tree planting. The general outcomes of these initiatives were centred on the survival rate of trees, job creation, and development of parks and gardens. Findings from the first part of the second segment, conducted in eight small-medium sized towns in the Eastern Cape, revealed a general lack of trees along streets of both the newly developed and old low-cost housing areas. In the private spaces, most households (52 %) reported having at least one tree in their yard, with households in the older suburbs (60 %) reporting more trees than the newer ones (44 %). Most of these trees (66 %) had been planted as opposed to natural regeneration. Previous participation in urban tree planting programs was low, but 75 % of residents expressed willingness to participate in the future. Municipal officials from these towns corroborated that they do not host tree planting events or initiatives, which was demonstrated by the limited incorporation of urban forestry and urban greening in municipal Integrated Development Plans (IDP). In the second part of the second segment, three groupings of barriers and enablers into biophysical, social, and resources revealed that the most mentioned barriers for the private space were resource barriers. The most prominent barriers were limited space in people’s yards, insufficient funds for tree purchases and associated resources, the lack of equipment, and damage to planted trees. Private space enablers of tree planting suggested include the availability of funds, allocation of space, and changes in attitudes towards trees. According to residents, the most prominent barriers to public space planting include the perceived incompetence of municipalities, limited space on the street, insufficient funds for tree planting programmes, damage to trees in public spaces, crime associated with street trees, and politics. Additionally, municipal officials reported that their efforts to plant trees were hindered by lack of communication and coordination between municipal departments. Residents suggested that enlisting the skills of residents for tree planting, engaging in education and awareness initiatives about trees and tree planting, and changing attitudes towards trees could enable tree planting. Municipal officials opined that education and awareness, revisions to and implementation of Environmental Management Plans, and inter-departmental collaborations and partnerships could improve the prospects for public space planting. Drawing on key findings from the second segment, an intervention to involve communities in tree planting using a case study approach in three towns ensued. Here an activity systems analysis of participatory tree planting initiatives was used. Findings revealed an array of multi-activity systems with multiple and partially overlapping objectives related to tree planting. Residents demonstrated that, with support, they can champion urban tree planting for their suburbs. However, contradictions and tensions within and between various activity systems emerged, creating opportunities for the expansive transformation of an activity that was previously not a priority. This study highlights the current distribution of power and resources in the governance system of the urban forest, ascertains the spatial heterogeneity of urban trees in areas of a similar socio-economic context, and provides lessons for best-practice in tree planting that involves multiple actors. It provides in-depth insights into what constrains tree planting, and highlights the importance of residents in the governance system of urban forests and how this can constrain or advance tree planting. Further research in participatory urban forest governance for a developing country, low-income context could utilize an expansive learning platform as this will provide first-hand experiences into learning what is not yet there, and provide communities with the opportunities to explore and devise localized solutions to the lack of trees in their residential areas.

Opportunity and constraint : historicity, hybridity and notions of cultural identity among farm workers in the Sundays River Valley

- Description: This thesis focuses on relationships of opportunity and constraint among farm workers in the Sundays River Valley (SRV), Eastern Cape Province. Relationships of 'constraint' include those experiences of displacement and forced removal and war, including forced removals by the apartheid state in 1960 and 1970. Relationships of 'opportunity' include the ways in which residents in the SRV have contested their experiences of upheaval and domination, and the formation of a regional sense of place and belonging/ investigate how farm workers actually draw elements of locality and identity from their experiences of upheaval, and how displacement bolsters feelings of belonging and place. Instead of viewing displacement as a once-off experience, this thesis investigates displacement in historical terms, as a long-term, 'serial' experience of human movement, which is continued in the present- specifically through the creation of the Greater Addo Elephant National Park. I concentrate on developing a spatialised and cultural notion of movemenUplacement. 'Place' is investigated as a term that refers to rather indeterminate feelings of nostalgia, memory and identity, which depend on a particular connection to territory (ie: 'space'). I emphasise that elements of place in the SRV are drawn from and expressed along dualistic lines, which juxtapose situations of opportunity and constraint. In this way, farm workers' sense of connection to farms and ancestral territory in the SRV depends on their experiences of stable residency and work on farms, as well as their memories of removal from land in the area. I emphasise that those elements of conservatism (expressed as 'tradition' and Redness) among Xhosa-speaking farm workers are indications of a certain hybridity of identity in the region, which depend on differentiation from other groups (such as so-called 'coloured' farm workers and 'white' farmers), as well as associations between these groups. This thesis lays emphasis upon those less visible and definable 'identities' in the Eastern Cape Province, specifically by shifting focus away from the exhomeland states of the Ciskei and Transkei, to more marginal expressions of identity and change (among farm workers) in the Province. I point out that labourers cannot solely be defined by their positions as farm workers, but by their place and sense of cultural belonging in the area. In this sense, I use the idea of work as a loaded concept that can comment on a range of cultural attitudes towards belonging and place, and which is firmly embedded in the private lives of labourers - beyond their simple socio-economic conditions of farm work. I use Bourdieu's conception of habitus and doxa to define work as a set of dispositions that have been historicised and internalised by workers to such an extent, that relationships of domination are sometimes inadvertently obscured through their apparent 'naturalness'. Moreover, I point out that work can be related to ritualised action in the SRV through the use of performance and practice-based anthropological theory. Both work and ritual are symbolic actions, and are sites of struggle within which workers express themselves dualistically. Rituals, specifically, are dramatic events that combine disharmonious and harmonious social processes - juxtaposing the powerlessness of workers (on farms), and the deep sense of belonging and place in the SRV. I argue that the deep historical connections in the SRV have largely been ignored by conservationists in the drive to establish new protected zones (such as the Greater Addo Elephant National Park), and that a new model of shared conservation management is needed for this Park.

- Description: The study is about a Zulu male vocal tradition called isicathamiya performed by 'migrants' in all night competitions called ingomabusuku. This is a performance style popularized by the award winning group Ladysmith Black Mambazo. Isicathamiya, both in its symbolic structure and in the social and culturalpractice of its proponents has much in common with the ritual practices of Zionists. And Zionists are worshippers who integrate traditional beliefs and Christianity. This study will reveal that isicathamiya performance and Zionists are linked in three major areas:in the sqcial bases and practice of its proponents, in the structural properties of their performances and tn the meanings attached to these practices. Firstly, Zionists, who are also called a Separatist or African Independent church, and isicathamiya performers have minimal education and are employed in low income jobs in the cities. Most groups are formed with 'homeboy networks'. Furthermore, performers, unlike their brothers in the city, cling tenaciously to usiko [custom and tradition]. Although they are Christians, they still worship Umvelinqangi [The One Who Came First], by giving oblations and other forms of offerings. Amadlozi [the ancestors] are still believed to be their mediators with God. Also commonplace in this category is the practice of ukuchatha, [cleansing the stomach with some prepared medicine]; and ukuphalaza [taking out bile by spewing, which is also done as a way of warding off evil spirits]. These are rural practices that have meaning in their present domiciles. The second area of similarity consists in the structure of the nocturnal gatherings that form the core of the ritual and performance practices among isicathamiya singers and Zionists. Thus, a core of the ritual of Zionists is umlindelo [night vigil] which takes place every weekend from about 8 at night until the following day. Likewise, isicathamiya performers have competitions every Saturday evening from 8 at night until about 11 am the following day. Although Zionists night vigils are liturgical and isicathamiya competitions secular, the structures of both isicathamiya choreography and Zionists body movements appear the same. These movements are both rooted in a variety of traditional styles called ingoma. Thirdly, the meanings attached to these symbolic correspondences must be looked for in the selective appropriation of practices and beliefs taken to be traditional. Using present day commentaries in song and movement, ingoma and other rural styles performed in competitions and Zionists night vigils reflect a reconstruction of the past. Isicathamiya performers and Zionists see themselves as custodians of Zulu tradition, keeping Zulu ethnicity alive in the urban environment. This is why in this study we are going to see rural styles like ingoma, isifekezeli [war drills], ukusina [solo dancing] that were performed on the fields, now performed, sort of feigned and 'held in' as they are p~rformed in dance halls with wooden stages.

Genetic studies and physiological responses to ultraviolet radiation in the Bacteroides fragilis group

- Description: The contents of this thesis have been divided into 2 parts . The first part deals with genetic studies carried out on 36 strains belonging to the Bacteroides fragilis group. A number of mutants were isolated from several of the strains. A notable feature of the methods used was the low yield of mutants obtained and the marked sensitivity of these organisms to the mutagenic agents. Variations in colonial morphology was found to be a common feature amongst these organisms. In a few strains this phenomenon was clearly visible, in the remainder it was much weaker, and often could only be seen with the aid of a microscope . Colonial variation was found to be due to the ability of a proporti on of the cells to pruduce capsules or slime layers. The variants were found to segregate at high frequency and different growth conditions were found to have little effect on the segregation frequency or capsule formation . A number of phages specific for B. fragilis and B. t hetaiotaomicron were isol ated. All these phages were virulent and attempts to induce lysogenic phages were unsuccesful . The use of these phages in attempts to obtain transduction proved unsuccessful. A phage carrier state was found to occur in the majority of the phage-host cell systems, which seemed to be due to the presence of phage-resistant encapsulated cells in the population. Bacteriocins were produced by about half the strains, these inhibited the growth of a high proportion of the 36 strains tested. The bacteriocins were released into the growth media at the end of the growth period in the 2 bacteriocins tested. A link between the mode of action of one bacteriocin and rifampicin-resistance was investigated. All the bacter iocins tested were found to be inactive against some rifampicin-resistant mutants of a susceptible strain, suggesting a common mode of action. The presence of capsules in some cells appeared to confer bacteriocin-resistance on these variants. The second part of the thesis deals with a study of the physiological responses of a single strain of B.fragilis to ultraviolet radiation. This strain was found to be more sensitive to ultraviolet radiation under aerobic conditions. The amount of pyrimidine dimers formed after irradiation under anaerobic and aerobic conditions, was not found to differ significantly, indicating that the increase in sensitivity under aerobic conditions was not due to an increase in DNA damage. The use of repair inhibitors and the survival characteristics indicate that this difference was due to decreased repair capabilities under aerobic conditions. Liquid holding recovery in B.fragiZis was found to occur under aerobic conditions . This process was brought about by excision repair and appeared to be due to a decrease in repair efficiency under aerobic conditions. Under anaerobic conditions, where full repair capabilities were present, liquid holding recovery was inhibited. Both minimal medium recovery and fluence dependent filament formation were found to occur in irradiated B.fragiZis cells. The survival kinetics of a number of irradiated B.fragiZis phages were determined and a number of phage reactivation processes were investigated. Little or no host cell reactivation appeared to occur in the strains investigated, however, some ultraviolet reactivation and multiplicity reactivation was found to occur, but only under anaerobic conditions. Photoreactivation was found to be absent in this organism, but an excision repair system was present . The excision repair system was partially characterized and was found to resemble short patch excision repair in E.coli. Evidence was found which suggested that a second mode of repair which was sensitive to oxygen, also occurred in this strain. This repair system which appeared to be responsible for error-prone repair, and the systems which were responsible for ultraviolet reactivation and multiplicity reactivation, seemed to be dependent on a recombination function' which was inhibited by oxygen. The significance of this finding for future genetic studies was discussed.

- Description: The contents of this thesis have been divided into 2 parts . The first part deals with genetic studies carried out on 36 strains belonging to the Bacteroides fragilis group. A number of mutants were isolated from several of the strains. A notable feature of the methods used was the low yield of mutants obtained and the marked sensitivity of these organisms to the mutagenic agents. Variations in colonial morphology was found to be a common feature amongst these organisms. In a few strains this phenomenon was clearly visible, in the remainder it was much weaker, and often could only be seen with the aid of a microscope . Colonial variation was found to be due to the ability of a proporti on of the cells to pruduce capsules or slime layers. The variants were found to segregate at high frequency and different growth conditions were found to have little effect on the segregation frequency or capsule formation . A number of phages specific for B. fragilis and B. t hetaiotaomicron were isol ated. All these phages were virulent and attempts to induce lysogenic phages were unsuccesful . The use of these phages in attempts to obtain transduction proved unsuccessful. A phage carrier state was found to occur in the majority of the phage-host cell systems, which seemed to be due to the presence of phage-resistant encapsulated cells in the population.
