The registration of generic topical corticosteroid formulations in South Africa: a report

- Description: [From the text]Topical corticosteroid formulations are used widely for a variety of skin conditions such as psoriasis and eczema. The most commonly used formulation types are cream, ointment, lotion and scalp application, with some mousse formulations being released recently onto the market for scalp application. The type of formulation used depends on the condition being treated. Dry lesions are normally treated with ointments and wet lesions with creams. Cosmetically, cream formulations are more acceptable as they can be rubbed in, thus leaving no residual oiliness. Scalp applications have to be less viscous to allow the formulation to pass through the hair and contact the scalp. Occlusion with plastic wrapping hydrates the stratum corneum and facilitates the passage of the corticosteroid through this barrier to the basal layer where the therapeutic effect is required.

In 1990, with the strong support of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor, Dr Derek Henderson, he instigated the Certificate in Change Ringing (Church Bell Ringing) in the Rhodes University Department of Music and Musicology - the first such course to be offered in Africa. Since that date he has lectured in the basic theory, and taught the practice of change ringing. He is the Ringing Master of the Cathedral of St Michael and St George, Grahamstown, South Africa. , The first ring of bells in Africa was installed in Grahamstown Cathedral in 1879 at the instigation of Frederick Henry Williams. Williams was Dean of Grahamstown from 1865 until his death in 1885. He was born in County Fermanagh, Ireland, not far from Enniskillen, where an octave was installed in the Cathedral when Williams was an impressionable 12-year old. Grahamstown's bells were also an octave, cast by John Warner and Sons of London. They were hung in the newly built tower, designed by the English architect, George Gilbert Scott.

- Description: [From introduction] The recent completion of the South African National Land-Cover Database and the Vegetation Map of South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho, allows for the first time a comparison to be made on a national scale between the current and potential distribution of ‘natural’ vegetation resources. This article compares the distribution and location of woodland-type vegetation categories defined within the National Land-Cover data and the equivalent ‘Savanna-thicket Biomes’ class defined within the Vegetation Mapdata. Significant differences were found, both in terms of the total areal extent, as well as the actual spatial distribution of these two data sets. These differences are a measure of the inherent mapping accuracies of each source, but rather an illustration of boundary delineation distinctions that are a result of different data sources, mapping objectives and information classes, that must be noted when comparing two essentially similar information sets.

- Description: Practical experience in porting a large virtual reality system from C/C++ to Java indicates that porting this type of real-time application is both feasible, and has several merits. The ability to transfer objects in space and time allows useful facilities such as distributed agent support and persistence to be added. Reflection and type comparisons allow flexible manipulations of objects of different types at run-time. Native calls and native code compilation reduce or remove the overhead of interpreting code.Problems encountered include difficulty in achieving cross-platform code portability, limitations of the networking libraries in Java, and clumsy coding practices forced by the language.

- Description: The strike is over! Two days of picketing and marching by thousands of Eskom workers across the country forced management back to the table to negotiate things they said “would never be negotiated!” Eskom agreed to: an increased wage offer. All workers are guaranteed a 7% increase while those on the minimums will get a 9% increase. From January 2002, all workers will receive a guaranteed 0.5% increase with those on the minimum rates receiving a guaranteed 1% increase both calculated on June 30, 2001 rates of pay. Fully paid maternity leave for 4 months with 30% for the 5th month. Negotiate further on the issue of a bargaining council for the sector and investigate inequities in the benefits. Management has also agreed to discuss the issue of only giving ‘market-related’ increases. These increases have resulted in massive gaps between the lowest paid and highest paid on each grade. Numsa is committed to closing these gaps.

An empirical formula for estimating the water use of Scaevola plumieri

- Description: Transpirational water loss of Scaevola plumieri (L) Vahl. (= Scaevola thunbergii Eckl. & Zeyh.) (Goodeniaceae), a dune pioneer plant along the eastern and southern coasts of South Africa, was measured over a wide range of atmospheric conditions and related to the atmospheric vapour pressure deficit (VPD). A plot of leaf transpiration rate (E) against VPD yielded a curvilinear relationship (r[sup 2] = 0.88, P = 0.000). As both leaf and canopy E were found to be closely coupled to atmospheric conditions, this correlation was used to calculate canopy E for entire days. The bulk volumes of water transpired per day were related to the mean daily temperature as recorded at a nearby weather station and were strongly related (r2 = 0.71, P = 0.0037). This correlation allowed the bulk volume of water transpired by one square metre of a S. plumieri-covered dune to be calculated on a daily basis for an entire year. Transpirational losses (566 litres) in 1997 were then compared with rainfall (539 litres), indicating that rainfall was perhaps insufficient to support the plants that year. Similar deficits were calculated for 1996, suggesting that plants were possibly reliant on water stored in the sand or taped ground water. This species showed an unusual positive response of increasing leaf conductance to increasing VPD over the range 0-3 kPa.

Cape Town talks about sex workers

- Description: On Monday 25 September,, as- part of the One City Festival, the Black Arts Collective hosted a debate about sex work. Natasha from SWEAT spoke about the why the government should decriminalize sex work. Khadija Magardie, a journalist from the Mail and Guardian newspaper, sent a speech talking about how sex work should be abolished by changing the law to make the clients criminals, so they can be arrested for buying sex from sex workers. Members of the public came to the debate, and talked about their feelings about sex work, and asked questions and gave comments. Generally most people were supportive of the fact that sex workers deserve human rights, even if they didn’t like the idea that people sell sex for a living. The city is starting to talk about sex work and sex workers, which is very exciting. It is a chance for SWEAT to talk about the realities of the industry, and to break down some of the stereotypes that many members of the public have about sex workers and sex work. One element that is missing from these discussions is the voices of sex workers themselves. SWEAT points out that it is very difficult for sex workers to talk publicly because of the stigmatization they suffer, and because sex work is still illegal. If you are interested in talking to the public about your experiences and opinions, please contact SWEAT and let us know, so that next time there is a chance to speak to the public we can invite you along.

- Description: In the political vacuum that accompanies Africa's 'strategic marginalisation' and in a situation of fifteen conflicts, our continent finds itself in a state of flux. Here lies the challenge for inter-African diplomacy and regional initiatives by state and non-state actors seeking to indigenously define, manage and contain conflict. The intention must be a purposive one: to seek to normatively structure an environment 'paddocked' to provide security for states, civic society, communities, women, children and individuals.

- Description: A prominent vertical dolerite dyke, up to 30 m wide and which can be traced for over 100 km, is compositionally homogeneous along much of its length and shows no evidence of flow differentiation. Associated parallel dykes are compositionally distinct and are unrelated by closed-system processes. The main dyke has geochemical characteristics of the Maloti or Senqu Units in the upper part of the main Lesotho basalt sequence, whereas the parallel dykes are geochemically similar to the lower Mafika Lisiu Unit. On the basis of size and composition the main dyke may well represent a fissure which once fed effusions of Karoo basalt.

Regionalism in marine biology: the convergence of ecology, economics and politics in South Africa

- Description: The South African coast includes biogeographic provinces which are quite distinct in their abilities to sustain exploitation and in the types of exploitation they experience. As a result, no single region can act as a model for the management of living resources around the entire coast. Instead, appropriate management must rest on regionally based research. Past research in marine biology focused on the west coast with much less attention being given to the east and south coasts, where non-commercial, subsistence-level fisheries predominate. A partial decentralisation of research focus is essential. This requires commitment from national-level research bodies and some certainty about at least medium-term funding. This paper addresses the convergence of ecology, economics and politics in South Africa and illustrates the direct relevance that fundamental or basic research can have to socioeconomic problems. Recruitment of the resource; Geographical variation in biological processes; State of research policy; Promise of regulations.
