- Description: Sagittaria platyphylla (delta arrowhead) is an emergent aquatic macrophyte native to southeastern United States of America that has been introduced into Australia and South Africa as an ornamental pond and aquarium plant. Compared to plants in the native range, S. platyphylla in the introduced range have greater reproductive capacity and form extensive infestations that dominate shallow waterbodies. One explanation for the invasive success of S. platyphylla in introduced countries is that plants are devoid of biotic pressures that would regulate population abundance in their native range (the enemy release hypothesis). We previously reported on field surveys that documented the number of pathogens and insect herbivores associated with S. platyphylla in native and introduced ranges. Here, we quantify the damage caused by these natural enemies to S. platyphylla in the two ranges. As predicted, damage to plants caused by pathogens and insect herbivores was much greater in the native than the introduced range at both the plant and population level. In introduced regions herbivory was low (less than 10%) in every plant part, while in North America insect damage to fruiting heads was 46% (of fruiting heads attacked), damage to leaves was between 33 to 57%, and internal herbivore damage to petioles and the inflorescence scapes was 56% and 43% respectively. Pathogen damage to leaves was between 39 to 57% of leaves per plant affected, compared to 9% in Australia and 8% in South Africa. This lack of biotic resistance from herbivores and disease may have facilitated S. platyphylla invasion in Australia and South Africa.

Based on our observations and ringing at this site (2007–2017), as well as concurrent data from the South African Bird Atlas Project (SABAP2), we suggest that in this region only three species, the African Dusky Flycatcher Muscicapa adusta, White-starred Robin Pogonocichla stellata and Barratt's Warbler Bradypterus barratti, are regular altitudinal migrants. For two other species, the Grey Cuckooshrike Coracina caesia and Yellow-throated Woodland Warbler Phylloscopus ruficapilla, local movements apparently occur, but these may take place within the coastal zone rather than between the coast and inland forests.

The quinolone-based compounds bearing an INH moiety attached via a hydrazide–hydrazone bond were synthesised and evaluated against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv (MTB). The compounds were also evaluated for cytotoxicity against HeLa cell lines. These compounds showed significant activity (MIC90) against MTB in the range of 0.2–8 μM without any cytotoxic effects. Compounds 10 (MIC90; 0.9 μM), 11 (MIC90; 0.2 μM), 12 (MIC90; 0.8 μM) and compound 15 (MIC90; 0.8 μM), the most active compounds in this series, demonstrate activities on par with INH and superior to those reported for the fluoroquinolones. The SAR analysis suggests that the nature of substituents at positions −1 and −3 of the quinolone nucleus influences anti-MTB activity. Aqueous solubility evaluation and in vitro metabolic stability of compound 12 highlights favourable drug-like properties for this compound class.

The partial heating procedure reveals that each of the TL peaks consist of several overlapping components. The TL in each case was analysed for kinetic parameters. The initial rise analysis carried out on the rising edge of the overlapping components shows that the activation energy of the component peaks corresponding to beta irradiation is consistent at (0.59 ± 0.01) eV. In comparison, activation energies corresponding to optical excitation increases with the partial heating temperature from (0.71 ± 0.01) eV to (0.76 ± 0.01) eV. The activation energy of (0.59 ± 0.01) eV is ascribed to an oxygen vacancy whereas the range of activation energies between (0.71 ± 0.01) eV and (0.76 ± 0.01) eV is ascribed to the 4 f levels of the Nd dopant.

The sensitivity of the red corundum reaches a maximum after annealing at 900 °C whereas that of the blue corundum increases with annealing up to the maximum annealing temperature of 1200 °C used in this study. Both samples have a complex glow curve between 30 °C and 500 °C. The composite nature of the glow curves is deduced to be due to a continuum in the trap distribution in the crystal. The activation energy of the traps vary between 0.70 eV and 1.15 eV. The dose response of the red corundum under TL is linear within 100‒1000 Gy whereas that of the blue corundum is superlinear for the same dose range. The TL of both samples is reproducible but the signal fades with time between irradiation and measurement. Both samples produce OSL under 470 nm blue light stimulation. The dose response of the OSL is superlinear within 100‒1000 Gy. It is found that the samples also produce thermally-assisted OSL (TA-OSL) at elevated temperature. The TA-OSL intensity of the red corundum increases with dose up to 400 Gy and saturates thereafter. On the other hand, the intensity of the blue corundum increases consistently with dose from 100 Gy to 1000 Gy.

- Description: Herein, we propose novel quinolones incorporating an INH moiety as potential drug templates against TB. The quinolone-based compounds bearing an INH moiety attached via a hydrazide–hydrazone bond were synthesised and evaluated against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv (MTB). The compounds were also evaluated for cytotoxicity against HeLa cell lines. These compounds showed significant activity (MIC90) against MTB in the range of 0.2–8 μM without any cytotoxic effects. Compounds 10 (MIC90; 0.9 μM), 11 (MIC90; 0.2 μM), 12 (MIC90; 0.8 μM) and compound 15 (MIC90; 0.8 μM), the most active compounds in this series, demonstrate activities on par with INH and superior to those reported for the fluoroquinolones. The SAR analysis suggests that the nature of substituents at positions −1 and −3 of the quinolone nucleus influences anti-MTB activity. Aqueous solubility evaluation and in vitro metabolic stability of compound 12 highlights favourable drug-like properties for this compound class.

AM fungal colonisation and spores in relation to the soil properties were also analysed. Soil and root samples were collected from different rates of declining E. ingens trees at three sites in South Africa. AM fungal colonisation of the roots was assessed and fungal spores in the surrounding soil were enumerated. Soil phosphorus, mineral nitrogen and pH were analysed from the soil samples. The results showed that AM fungi are associated with E. ingens trees. AM abundance was influenced by site specific properties and not by E. ingens health. Moreover, the level of soil NO3− and soil texture significantly influenced AM colonisation in roots and the number of spores enumerated. These preliminary findings provide background information for further research into the large-scale decline of E. ingens populations in South Africa.

Wood of Ficus elastica Roxb. ex Hornem. aerial roots (Moraceae) and Selaginella vogelii Spring (Selaginellaceae) leaves were collected from two different sites in Cameroon. In vitro cell-growth inhibition activities were assessed on methanol extract of plant materials against Plasmodium falciparum strain 3D7 and Trypanosoma brucei brucei, as well as against HeLa human cervical carcinoma cells. Criteria for activity were an IC50 value 10 μg/mL. The extract of S. vogelii did not significantly reduce the viability of P. falciparum at a concentration of 25 μg/mL but dramatically affected the trypanosome growth with an IC50 of 2.4 μg/mL. In contrast, at the same concentration, the extract of F. elastica exhibited plasmodiacidal activity (IC50 value of 9.5 μg/mL) and trypanocidal (IC50 value of 0.9 μg/mL) activity. Both extracts presented low cytotoxic effects on HeLa cancer cell line. These results indicate that the selected medicinal plants could be further investigated for identifying compounds that may be responsible for the observed activities and that may represent new leads in parasitical drug discovery.

All the tested samples were determined to be non-toxic due to the low inhibitions observed. The most potent anti-HIV activity was observed for the methanolic extract of A. laxiflora root (ALR4) with an IC50 value of 0.21 ng/ml, which was more active than chicoric acid used as reference drug (6.82 nM). Roots, stem and leaves of A. laxiflora extracts exhibited antibacterial activities against most of the Gram-positive bacteria with the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC) ranging between 50 and 63 μg/ml. Compounds 1–5 displayed antibacterial activities against S. saprophyticus with MIC values as low as 4 μg/ml. The results inferred from this study demonstrate the potential of A. laxiflora root as a source for new anti-HIV drugs and scientifically validate the traditional use of A. laxiflora in the treatment of gastrointestinal, skin, respiratory and urinary tract related infections. We compared metabolic rate, evaporative water loss, evaporative cooling efficiency (calculated from evaporative water loss and resting metabolic rate) and body temperature in juveniles (n = 5) with adult birds (n = 10) to a ramped temperature profile (30–42 °C). Although juveniles exhibited no significant difference in cooling efficiency, they had higher evaporative water loss, resting metabolic rate and body temperature. This suggests that while juvenile birds show similar abilities to dissipate metabolic heat evaporatively, they face higher overall water and energy demands, and thus higher thermoregulatory costs in maintaining body temperature as overall temperatures continue to increase.

We compared metabolic rate, evaporative water loss, evaporative cooling efficiency (calculated from evaporative water loss and resting metabolic rate) and body temperature in juveniles (n = 5) with adult birds (n = 10) to a ramped temperature profile (30–42 °C). Although juveniles exhibited no significant difference in cooling efficiency, they had higher evaporative water loss, resting metabolic rate and body temperature. This suggests that while juvenile birds show similar abilities to dissipate metabolic heat evaporatively, they face higher overall water and energy demands, and thus higher thermoregulatory costs in maintaining body temperature as overall temperatures continue to increase.

For range-restricted species such as Cape Rockjumpers Chaetops frenatus, whose population declines are correlated with habitat warming, we identified juvenile physiological responses to high temperature as a potential gap in current knowledge. - Description: What is known today as the modern Internet has long relied on the existence of, and use of, IPv4 addresses. However, due to the rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT), and limited address space within IPv4, acquiring large IPv4 subnetworks is becoming increasingly difficult. The exhaustion of the IPv4 address space has made it near impossible for organizations to gain access to large blocks of IP space. This is of great concern particularly in the security space which often relies on acquiring large network blocks for performing a technique called Internet Background Radiation (IBR) monitoring. This technique monitors IPv4 addresses which have no services running on them. In practice, no traffic should ever arrive at such an IPv4 address, and so is marked as an anomaly, and thus recorded and analyzed. This research aims to address the problem brought forth by IPv4 address space exhaustion in relation to IBR monitoring. This study’s intent is to identify the smallest subnet that best represents the attributes found in the/24 IPv4 address. This is done by determining how well a subset of the monitored original subnetwork represents the information gathered by the original subnetwork. Determining the best method of selecting a subset of IPv4 addresses from a subnetwork will enable IBR research to continue in the best way possible in an ever restricting research space.
