- Description: The ionosphere is an important factor in high frequency (HF) radio propagation providing an opportunity to study ionospheric variability as well as the space weather conditions under which HF communication can take place. This thesis presents the validation of HF propagation conditions for the Ionospheric Communication Enhanced Profile Analysis and Circuit (ICEPAC) and Advanced Stand Alone Prediction System (ASAPS) models over Africa by comparing predictions with the measured data obtained from the International Beacon Project (IBP). Since these models were not developed using information on the African region, a more accurate HF propagation prediction tool is required. Two IBP transmitter stations are considered, Ruaraka, Kenya (1.24°S, 36.88°E) and Pretoria, South Africa (25.45°S, 28.10°E) with one beacon receiver station located in Hermanus, South Africa (34.27°S, 19.l2°E). The potential of these models in terms of HF propagation conditions is illustrated. An attempt to draw conclusions for future improvement of the models is also presented. Results show a low prediction accuracy for both ICEPAC and ASAPS models, although ICEPAC provided more accurate predictions for daily HF propagation conditions. This thesis suggests that the development of a new HF propagation prediction tool for the African region or the modification of one of the existing models to accommodate the African region, taking into account the importance of the African ionospheric region, should be considered as an option to ensure more accurate HF Propagation predictions over this region.

- Description: Members of the zinc binuclear cluster family are important fungal transcriptional regulators sharing a common DNA binding domain. Da181p is a pleotropic zinc binuclear cluster protein involved in the induction of the UGA genes required for the γ-aminobutyrate nitrogen catabolic pathway in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The zinc binuclear cluster domain is indispensable for function in Da181p and little is known about other domains in this protein. The aim of the study was to explore the zinc binuclear cluster protein family using comparative bioinformatics as a complement to biochemical and structural approaches. A database of all zinc binuclear cluster proteins was composed. A total of 118 zinc binuclear proteins are reported in this work. Thirty nine previously unidentified zinc binuclear cluster proteins were found. Four homologues of Da181p were identified by homology searching. Important sequence motifs were identified in the aligned sequences of Da181p and its homologues. The coiled coil motif found in the Ga14p zinc binuclear cluster protein could not be identified in Da181p and its homologues. This suggested that Da181p did not dimerise through this structural motif as other zinc binuclear cluster proteins. Solvent accessible site that could be phosphorylated by protein kinase C or casein kinase II and the role of such sites in the possible regulation of Da181p function were discussed.

Investigation of the larval parasitoids of the false codling moth, Cryptophlebia Leucotreta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), on citrus in South Africa

- Description: The study examined the larval parasitoids of Cryptophlebia leucotreta (Meyrick) on citrus in South Africa and aimed to improve the existing rearing techniques of C. leucotreta with a view to mass rearing of biological control agents. The biological characteristics of Agathis bishopi Nixon (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) were studied, with an emphasis on parasitism rates in the field, host stage preference, developmental rate, life span and offspring sex ratios. Two larval parasitoids, A. bishopi and Apophua leucotretae (Wilkinson) (Hymenoptera: Ichneumonidae), and an egg parasitoid, Trichogrammatoidea cryptophlebiae Nagaraja (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), were recorded on C. leucotreta on citrus. A. bishopi was the more abundant of the larval parasitoids and exhibited density dependent parasitism. The highest parasitism rates were observed in December with up to 38% in Sundays River Valley and 34% in Gamtoos River Valley, at a time when the highest false codling moth infestations were observed. Agathis bishopi was recorded only in the Eastern Cape Province. The sex ratio of A. bishopi was biased towards females throughout the study (77% in Gamtoos River Valley and 72% in Sundays River Valley). Agathis bishopi is a solitary, koinobiont, larval-pupal endoparasitoid. The species showed a preference for 1st and 2"d instar hosts. Females regulate the sex of their progeny according to the size and larval stage of the host, ovipositing unfertilised eggs in younger, smaller larvae (1st instars) and fertilised eggs in older, larger larvae (2nd instars). The developmental rate of A. bishopi is in synchrony with that of the moth and adults emerge when adult moths that have escaped parasitism emerge. Agathis bishopi and T. cryptophlebiae compliment each other because they have different niches and strategies of attack. Integrating A. bishopi and T. cryptophlebiae into the management of citrus orchards has potential to suppress false codling moth. Larger rearing containers seemed ideal for large-scale rearing of false codling moth. A higher percentage of adults was obtained from larvae reared in larger containers than in smaller ones. The width of the sponges used as stoppers prevented escape of the larvae. Media prepared in larger containers are easier and simpler to prepare than in smaller ones, thus eliminating many precautions otherwise necessary to prevent contamination. Moth production was greatly reduced by the high concentration of Sporekill used for egg decontamination.

- Description: This thesis examines the problem of moral objectivity, which is constituted by the ontological, epistemological and motivational challenges. It gradually develops an account of moral objectivity that has the dual function of dealing with the enemies of moral objectivity as well as giving a positive account of what moral objectivity is. It establishes these aims by arguing for the following theses. The first set of arguments show that relativist theories of ethics provide us with no forceful grounds for being sceptical about moral objectivity. The second set of arguments deepens the response to those who are sceptical about moral objectivity. It does so by showing in greater detail how rationality plays a substantive role in our practical deliberation, our notion of agency as well as our reactive attitudes. These arguments provide further reasons why we should have faith in the possibility of developing an adequate account of moral objectivity. The last set of arguments provides the positive account of moral objectivity. This positive account ends with the discussion of a paradigmatic moral fact that gives full expression (to the features of moral objectivity that have been articulated and defended.

- Description: This study focuses on the issue of credit accessibility for the rural poor. Taking cognisance of the critical role played by innovative micro-lending mechanisms in the sphere of rural development, the study reaffirms the need to enhance access to financial services by rural communities. However, it also reveals the fact that there are numerous impediments to access to credit for the people living in parts of the Keiskammahoek District of the former Ciskei. Key among the impediments has been lack of awareness about the existence and the activities of micro-lending institutions. This has, in a large measure been blamed for many of the rural poor people's failure to approach such institutions for funding. As a result, the affected people's efforts to fully actualize themselves economically have to a certain extent been hampered. Consequently, as its core argument, this study views as crucial the need to tackle all the attendant impediments. It also suggests that as the first step, the government, NGOs as well as formal and informal lending institutions should endeavour to disseminate the requisite information on micro-financing and in enhancing the affected people's institutional capacity to effectively use credit obtained for commercially productive ventures. Without sorting out the basics first, credit extension even when easily availed may not have the desired impact. At worst, it may actually complicate the poverty situation as the people grapple with piling debts.

- Description: A new style of abstraction for program development, based on the concept of algorithmic skeletons, has been proposed in the literature. The programmer is offered a variety of independent algorithmic skeletons each of which describe the structure of a particular style of algorithm. The appropriate skeleton is used by the system to mould the solution. Parallel programs are particularly appropriate for this technique because of their complexity. This thesis investigates algorithmic skeletons as a method of hiding the complexities of parallel programming from the user, and for guiding them towards efficient solutions. To explore this approach, this thesis describes the implementation and benchmarking of the divide and conquer and task queue paradigms as skeletons. All but one category of problem, as implemented in this thesis, scale well over eight processors. The rate of speed up tails off when there are significant communication requirements. The results show that, with some user knowledge, efficient parallel programs can be developed using this method. The evaluation explores methods for fine tuning some skeleton programs to achieve increased efficiency.

- Description: Jointed Cactus, Opuntia aurantiaca Lindley (see frontispiece), is the most important weed plant in South Africa, infesting approximately, 1,2 X 10¹° M² and costing approximately R240 000 per annum. Tordon herbicide effectively kills jointed cactus bushes to which it is applied. However, apart from being expensive and damaging to beneficial vegetation, spray programmes have not successfully controlled the weed because most small O. aurantiaca plants are impossible to detect in the field. Biological control may provide a solution to the problem. Two insects, the cochineal bug, Dactylopius austrinus De Lotto and the pyralid moth, Cactoblastis cactorum Berg., already exercise a degree of control over the weed. The introduction into South Africa of other natural enemies such as Zophodia tapiacola (Dyar) from Argentina, South America, may reduce the density of jointed cactus to below an acceptable economic threshold. Any insect considered for release should not colonise and destroy beneficial plants of which the culivated spineless cacti are the most vulnerable. Pre-release studies on Z. tapiacola have shown that it can only colonise a few species of low growing cacti and that it will not damage the large spineless cacti or other desirable plants. Further, the moths are relatively fecund and each larva destroys significant amounts of O. aurantiaca during its development. Consequently, Z. tapiacola is not only considered safe for release but it has the potential to act as a successful biological control agent of O. aurantiaca in South Africa.
