Choreographies of protest performance as recruitment to activism and the movement of perception during the 2015 re-emergence of student activism at Rhodes University

- Description: It has been argued that individuals participate in activism due to an identification with the preferences and interests of an emerging group of actors or in solidarity with a pre-existing network that has resorted to a number of protest repertoires in order to make claims or demands. Additionally, an emerging instance of protest is often linked to an image of previous protest events through the employment of a combination of master frames which function as discursive articulation of the encounter in familiar terms, creating a frame resonance which recruits adherents and constituents. To understand why some bystanders to protest transcended to actors in protest and the development of frames within a protest cycle, a performance ethnography is employed to observe and analyse choreographies of protest which took place at an institution of higher education in South Africa during the 2015 re-emergence of wide-spread student activism. It is found that in encountering an atmosphere of protest there emerged a relation of feeling, referred to as “feeling the vibe or atmosphere”, which those who became protest performers resolved in ways which increased their capacity to act in favour of co-constituting that atmosphere. During the encounter between the bystander body and the atmosphere of protest, non-linear somatic communication, characterised by active and passive gestures and postures, occurred through which protest performers developed contact and connection with other bodies as a result of the displacement of space. This thesis suggests that participation in activism can be about going with the flow of movement in an uncertain and ambiguous moment and is not limited to an identification with the pre-existing organization of preferences and interests as a frame of resonance emerges to signify somatic communication which differentiated bodies in the duration of protest performance. Therefore, this thesis uses the theory of affect to situate student activism in-between the politics of performance and the performance of politics whereupon the rhythm of song creates an opening for the kinaesthetic to create form from spontaneous movement of the body as an event of the movement of perception and the perception of movement.

- Description: In South Africa, freshwater ecosystems are under pressure due to increasing anthropogenic factors degrading river systems. The Cape Fold, the lower Southern Temperate Highveld and the Amatolo – Winterberg Highlands freshwater ecoregions contain some of the heavily impacted river systems in the country. One such river system is the Great Fish River system, which has been affected by anthropogenic modification (hydrological modification, water pollution and invasion by non-native fish species). These modifications have raised conservation concerns on an imperilled anabantid fish, the Eastern Cape rocky Sandelia bainsii that is confined to the Kat and Koonap rivers, which are tributaries of the Great Fish River. Historically, the species was reportedly common and abundant, with a range spanning across seven river systems (Kowie, Great Fish, Keiskamma, Igoda, Gxulu, Buffalo and Nahoon rivers) in the Eastern Cape Province. However, surveys have indicated that the species has experienced decline in population size and distribution range, with localised extirpations being reported. This resulted in its listing on the IUCN Red List of threatened species as Endangered. The proposed shale gas exploration and potential infrastructure development in the Karoo basin, which encompasses the headwaters of the Kat River, represent a potential future threat to the remnant populations of this species. The aim of the present study was to review the past and present distribution range of S. bainsii, determine the habitat associations and assess the conservation of S. bainsii in the Great Fish River system. This information is essential for informing conservation and management decisions for this species in the Great Fish River system. This study undertook a comprehensive survey of the Kat and the Koonap rivers in 2017, and augmented this information with data from more recent surveys that were conducted from 2009 - 2014 to map the distributions freshwater fishes in the Great Fish River system. Data from these recent surveys (2009 – 2017) were compared with historical records (1961 – 2005) obtained from the South African Institute for Aquatic Biodiversity to evaluate changes in distribution patterns of S. bainsii. Historical records indicated that S. bainsii occurred at 11 localities in the Kat River and three localities in the Koonap River. Data from recent surveys indicated that the species has persisted at these historical localities, except one locality in the Koonap River where no individuals of S. bainsii were captured, despite the use of multiple sampling approaches and gears. Although the species still persists at two of the three historical localities in the Koonap River, the population sizes have considerably declined as the species was reportedly in high abundance at these localities in the 1980s. Factors threatening the continued existence of this species in the Koonap River likely include non-native species, extreme drought conditions and the associated excessive abstraction of water which has resulted in the drying of some of the refugia pools where the species was historically common and abundant. In contrast to the Koonap River, the 2017 survey indicated that in the Kat River, S. bainsii had a similar distribution range compared to historical records. The species occurred at 11 of the 41 localities that were sampled in the Kat River, and the sampled populations consisted of all size classes. Sandelia bainsii occurred with other native fish species in the system, including Labeo umbratus, Enteromius anoplus and Glossogobius callidus. A comparison of historical and recent data indicates that non-native fishes have likely not expanded their ranges in the Kat River. This is likely due to the presence of weirs and dams that have prevented upstream movement of non-native fish species L. aeneus, C. gariepinus and T. sparrmanii which are now abundant in the lower Kat and mainstem Great Fish River. Surveys from the present study indicated that although S. bainsii still persists within the Kat River, there are a number of factors that pose a considerable threat to the continued existence of this species in the Great Fish River system. Chapter 3 evaluated the habitat associations of S. bainsii based on 10 physical and chemical variables and distribution data collected from 30 localities in the Upper Kat River and seven of its tributaries. A non-metric multidimensional scaling model was used to assess the distribution patterns of S. bainsii in relation to environmental variables. Furthermore, a negative binomial generalised linear model (GLM) was used to assess the relationship between the abundance of S. bainsii and environmental variables. Results from the present study indicated that S. bainsii was a habitat generalist as the distribution of this species showed no specific association with any of the habitat variables that were considered in this study. The species occurred in a wide range of habitats, including rocky sections in the upper Kat River and its tributaries as well as the mainstem sections. The GLM however indicated that the abundance of S. bainsii was negatively associated with increasing conductivity. In addition, the Kat River contains multiple weirs of variable sizes. Future studies should therefore evaluate the effects of these weirs on population fragmentation, gene flow and long-term evolutionary potential of S. bainsii through the application of techniques such as mitochondrial DNA and microsatellites.

The long road to Rhodes University: narratives of African first-generation students whose mothers are/were domestic workers

- Description: First-generation African students contend with psychosocial, structural, educational background and financial struggles to gain access to university. The first-generation students exercised their available resources and power, agency and acquired skills to negotiate their journey and entrance to university. They had to figure out for themselves how to navigate a daunting and complex path to university without relying on the knowledge and informative engagement with previous older familial generations who had the experience of attending university. They are a testimony of a generation of young people who have the resilience and grit to compensate for the structural deficits they have and experienced through their disadvantaged educational systems and their financially disadvantaged backgrounds. Although one would expect that teachers would automatically be the first encounter a high school student has of acquiring information on how to gain access to university, many of the previously disadvantaged school teachers are simply too inundated with work to be able to facilitate this process. First-generation students found themselves mostly having to look beyond the parameters of the classroom to acquire these resources. Following a qualitative approach of narrative enquiry, five African students with life experience of being first-generation Rhodes University students whose mothers were or are domestic workers, narrated their personal stories. A first-generation student’s agency, negotiation and navigation through obstacles, struggles and setbacks in the backdrop of having mothers who were/are domestic workers who socialised their children in a specific ideology to value and pursue education are the foundations for this narrative enquiry. This research provides a framework for investigating the concept of adequate and appropriate university preparedness to address the inadequate resources that previously disadvantaged schools have in terms of preparing their students to compete (in often times with more advantaged students) to gain access to university. These first-generation students did not come from educational environments where career counselling or aptitude tests are done to better equip them for entrance into university and appropriate subject and degree choice. Several common traits emerged that give perspective to the narrative of the journey that first-generation students’ had to endure and overcome to gain access to university.

- Description: On 4 August 1983, a thirty-three year-old army captain seized power in Burkina Faso and embarked on what can be described a revolutionary journey. Over the next four years, until his assassination in 1987 the government, led by Captain Thomas Sankara, attempted to redeem Burkina Faso from the clutches of neo-colonialism. Through popular mobilisation and organisation, infrastructure (schools, hospitals, bridges) was built, millions of children were vaccinated and diseases such as river blindness were eliminated. Women, long-subjugated by patriarchal systems took up space and led their own initiatives in freedom, including holding senior roles in the public service. On the international stage, practical solidarity was extended to countries either fighting or threatened by neo-colonialism despite the fact that Burkina Faso was poor and was itself threatened by France and her lackeys. What Sankara inherited in August 1983, twenty-three years after Burkina Faso’s independence, was a fragile neo-colonial state which was not allowed by dominant imperialist interests to set an example of what true independence means. So, in just four years, it was all over. Sankara was assassinated by his comrades and the revolutionary project he had led came to a halt. The tragedy of Sankara was the tragedy of all those attempts at revolution which occur before mass movements have had the opportunity to develop and organise themselves independently of the state. Despite this, it is apparent today that Sankara has been influential on current political movements and parties in Africa, from Burkina Faso to South Africa. One of these political movements is the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in South Africa. This half-thesis is an investigation of Sankara’s political thought. It also examines the extent to which his answers to questions of nationalism and pan-Africanism both matched and differed from his predecessors. To accomplish the latter, a brief but critical analysis of the writings of Amílcar Cabral, Frantz Fanon, Kwame Nkrumah is made.

Making meaning of reality television celebrities: the reception of South African Idol by young adults in Joza, Grahamstown

- Description: Reality television or “factual entertainment” is a hybrid of old television formats and factual programming in order to create a “new” entertaining show designed to draw the attention of audiences and increase viewership ratings. South African Idol is one popular local example. Adapted from the British programme Pop Idol, the show promises upward mobility for the young star who wins the competition. This show has become a subject of conversation amongst young people in South Africa who aspire to the “success” and “celebrity” status that is produced by participating on the show. This paper uses a Cultural Studies framework in order to examine the relationship between texts and audiences as an aspect of the “circuit of culture,” with its interrelated moments of production, texts, consumption and lived experience. My research focuses on the text and audience “moments” of this circuit. Audience studies research suggests that we should situate television viewing and the meanings made of TV programs in the natural setting of the home, and that this setting should be taken seriously as a unit of analysis. This study therefore, seeks to understand the ways in which audiences make meaning of this television programme within the domestic context.

Audience studies research suggests that we should situate television viewing and the meanings made of TV programs in the natural setting of the home, and that this setting should be taken seriously as a unit of analysis. This study therefore, seeks to understand the ways in which audiences make meaning of this television programme within the domestic context.

South Africa has been an immigrants receiving country for decades, where most immigrants are from neighbouring countries within the South African region. It was the trade unions that empowered workers to gain back some of their basic rights during the apartheid era, and they did this for all workers who worked in sectors where they were exploited and mistreated by the apartheid regime on the basis of their skin colour. This research aims to understand how trade unions respond to xenophobia in the workplace, and the ways their strategies increase inclusion of immigrants in the trade unions. This research focuses on the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (NUMSA), seeking to find whether they have strategies and planned ways to respond to xenophobia in South African workplaces. This research also looks at the impact of nationalism in South Africa on immigrants. It shows that whilst the concept of nationalism is to protect South Africans, it does exclude immigrants because it places South Africans before immigrants when it comes to benefiting from the resources of the country. This shows that protecting one section of the working class over another weakens the working class movement. To get views from the trade unions, trade union officials were interviewed and from the interviews, common themes were picked out. From the interviews, it can be identified that trade union officials believe that immigrants should be included in the trade unions, and they should be treated with dignity. However, there are some conflicting themes, which highlight the view that South African locals deserve to get the resources of the country, such as housing, before immigrants. The themes will be discussed in the research to highlight the different perspectives that came from the trade union officials.

- Description: Salvinia molesta, a floating aquatic weed, is a global menace in many water bodies and waterways. The weed disrupts the ecological balance wherever it invades and also has wide ranging economic and health impacts. Its impact has resulted in the need to control it, and while chemical and mechanical control are often ineffective, biological control by the weevil Cyrtobagous salviniae is largely successful. However, in many parts of the world, including South Africa, biological control of S. molesta has been less effective where the weed grows as an understory species. Shallow and shaded waters characteristically found at the margins of water bodies provide a refuge for S. molesta. Therefore, the aim of the study was to determine the effect of shade on the efficacy of biological control of S. molesta. Investigations into the problems associated with control in the shade were carried out in a greenhouse and in the field. In controlled greenhouse experiments, plants were grown at high and low nutrient levels in individual mesocosms, at three varying levels of shade, where half the mesocosms were inoculated with C. salviniae. Plants in high nutrient conditions were significantly more productive in terms of biomass accumulation, compared to those grown at low nutrient levels, in both the absence and presence of herbivory at all levels of shade tested. Plants grown in the shade and in high nutrient conditions had significantly higher quality compared to the ones exposed to full sun. Higher plant quality in the shade consequently resulted in accelerated fecundity for C. salviniae resulting in significantly higher weevil populations. Furthermore, less damage was recorded on plants in the shade, possibly due to the high nitrogen concentrations which may have deterred grazing by C. salviniae. However, in the absence of shading, plants were of lower quality and consequently sustained more damage from herbivores despite lower weevil populations. In contrast to the greenhouse, there were no differences in biomass recorded in the field at two nutrient levels and in the presence of herbivory for both shade and open sites. Nutrients added to high nutrient treatment quadrats diffused evenly across the water body resulting in uniform nutrient distribution, hence uniform plant biomass and carbon-nitrogen ratio. Despite the lack of statistical differences, more weevils were found in the full sun plots, while modest populations were recorded in the shade. Higher weevil populations consequently led to more damage in the sun, a situation that has been observed in most field sites in South Africa. The results therefore suggest that nutrients were pivotal in plant growth compared to light regimes (amount of PAR). Plant quality significantly influenced weevil populations and plant damage in both studies, demonstrating that plant nitrogen plays a crucial role in the plant- herbivore system. Furthermore, in both the greenhouse and field, despite lack of statistical differences, plants exposed to full sunlight suffered more damage than shade plants, pointing towards better control in the sun compared to the shade, suggesting that there is greater preference of sun-exposed plants for grazing by the weevils. The results from this study add to the growing body of literature that plant quality is a major factor in determining the success of aquatic weed biological control programmes.

The influence of environmental variability on the catch of chokka, Loligo reynaudii, off the coast of South Africa

- Description: Globally, cephalopod fisheries are being relied on more heavily due to the depletion of longer-lived teleost species. The South African chokka squid (Loligo reynaudii) fishery is a case in point. Although previously numerous squid were often caught as bycatch, the fishery has officially been in place since 1985. Since the inception of the chokka fishery in South Africa, several studies have investigated the relationship between environmental drivers and annual chokka squid catch, with varying degrees of success. Recently, in 2013, chokka squid catches hit a record low, prompting resurgence in the topic of the squid environment-catch relationship. This study was initiated in an attempt to provide a quantitative relationship between the chokka squid catch and environmental variability, and to build a predictive model that could be used in fisheries management strategies. Historical data were obtained from various sources and included the mean and standard deviation in ocean bottom temperature; the mean and standard deviation in sea surface temperature; the maximum and minimum as well as the variation in wind speed; the mean, predominant and standard deviation in wind direction; the mean and standard deviation in atmospheric pressure; the mean chlorophyll concentration; the number of upwelling events; the hours of easterly winds blowing per day; and two large variation-in-climate indices, namely, the oceanic Nino index and the Antarctic Oscillation index. The monthly catch data were also provided. These data were initially analysed for inter-annual and intra-annual cyclic trends and followed by analysis of the delay in response of catch to the environmental variables, anticipating some impact on the different stages of the chokka life cycle. These lagged data were incorporated into a negative binomial generalised linear model, as well as a generalised additive model, which revealed a strong relationship (r²=0.707) between the catch and environmental variability. The inclusion of all the parameters was necessary; however, the mean bottom temperature and the standard deviation in sea surface temperature were the only parameters that had a significant effect on the catch. These results were used to build a predictive model that indicated that, although the relationship was strong, the ability of the model to predict catch was weak, particularly from the year 2005 onwards.

Structural habitat complexity was assessed in Zostera capensis (Setchell) seagrass and Spartina maritima (Curtis Fernald) salt marsh by sampling above-ground stem density and length, and total cover per unit area (Ct/At). Dimensionless habitat complexity indices such as the interstitial spatial index (ISI) at three magnifications and fractal geometry at two magnifications were used to further analyse habitat complexity. Above-ground biomass (P<0.05) in each season and canopy height (P<0.001) were significantly higher in salt marsh than in seagrass whilst stem density was significantly higher in seagrass than in salt marsh in each season (P<0.001). Each dimensionless index indicated that complexity is notably higher in seagrass than in the salt marsh. Using dimensionless indices that analyse complexity at different spatial scales provided a better analysis of habitat complexity than canopy height and biomass as it allowed for direct comparisons between habitat types. - Description: Particle precipitation involves the injection of energetic particles into the ionosphere which could increase the ionisation and conductivity of the upper atmosphere. The goal of this study was to examine the ionospheric response and changes due to particle precipitation in the region over South Africa, using a combination of groundbased and satellite instruments. Particle precipitation events were identified from satellite particle flux measurements of the Defence Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP). Comprehensive studies were done on the events of 5 April, 2000 and 7 October, 2000. Analysis of the data from the satellite instruments indicates that no particle precipitation was observed over the South African region during these events and that it is unlikely to occur during other such events. To validate the data, methods and tools used in this study, precipitation in the South Atlantic anomaly (SAA) region is used. Satellite ion density measurements revealed that strong density enhancements occurred over the SAA region at satellite altitudes during the precipitation events, but this did not occur in the South African region. The measurements also revealed how the ionisation enhancements in the SAA region correlated with geomagnetic and solar activities. Particle precipitation and convective electric fields are two major magnetospheric energy sources to the upper atmosphere in the auroral and the SAA regions. These increase dramatically during geomagnetic storms and can disturb thermospheric circulation in the atmosphere and alter the rates of production and recombination of the ionised species. Ionosonde observations at Grahamstown, South Africa (33.30S, 26.50E), provided the data to build a picture of the response of the ionosphere over the South African region to particle precipitation during the precipitation events. This analysis showed that, within the confines of the available data, no direct connections between particle precipitation events and disturbances in the ionosphere over this region were revealed.

- Description: Phylogeographic patterns of coastal organisms with different life histories and breeding strategies may reveal patterns not consistent with the current delineation of the biogeographic provinces around South Africa. The subdivision of the South African coastline into these three main climatological or biogeographic regions: namely the cool temperate west coast, the warm temperate south coast and the subtropical east coast, is based on average seawater temperatures and hydrological conditions. Genealogies of two estuarine fish species Atherina breviceps, a marine breeder, and Gilchristella aestuaria, an estuarine spawner, were reconstructed using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences. The study comprised two components, an assessment of a small dataset of both fish species to compare their population structure along the South African coastline and a more comprehensive investigation of the phylogeography of G. aestuaria collected from 21 estuaries around the coast. The comparative study of A. breviceps and G. aestuaria indicate different population distribution patterns along the South African coastline. Results of the A. breviceps analysis demonstrate substantial gene flow due to the random mixing of alleles, while the comparative G. aestuaria dataset indicates a more structured population and considerably less gene flow. The G. aestuaria population demonstrates geographic separation into four groups, namely the west coast (Great Berg), Bot (south coast), Seekoei (south coast) and east coast (Bushmans, Kasouga and Cefane). Results from the larger G. aestuaria dataset indicate that the phylogeographic patterns observed during this study do not conform to existing biogeographic boundaries along the southern African coastline. The delineation identified during this study between the warm temperate and subtropical regions is further south than originally perceived and this southward extension can be ascribed to the prevailing hydrology. The life history patterns and ecology of these two estuarine fish species appears key to understanding their population structure. These factors interact with environmental characteristics such as physical oceanography and the distribution of estuaries (along the coastline) to explain the observed distribution patterns and population structure of A. breviceps and G. aestuaria.

- Description: It is the objective of this treatise to highlight and demonstrate the role that can be played by Traditional Leadership Institutions in the development of their communities, demonstrate and advance the extent to which they can enhance their image and restore their dignity by embarking on community development projects that will improve the quality of life of their subjects in their jurisdictional areas. However, as the number of Traditional Leadership Institutions that can be investigated and researched was so large, it became necessary to focus attention primarily on the Rharhabe Kingdom with its seat and headquarters at Mngqesha Great Place in King William’s Town. The Mngqesha Great Place, the seat of the Rharhabe Kingdom is a typical example of a Traditional Leadership Institution selected from the six existing Eastern Cape Provincial Kingdoms. Attention is invited to the following fields which had to be explored since they serve the basis for the evolution of Traditional Leadership Institutions in South Africa. A historical background to Traditional Leadership and Governance in South Africa and the Eastern Cape provides some key issues of governance, management and administration, position, place and status of the institution during the pre- colonial and colonial periods, the period under apartheid rule, the independence period of the former homelands of Ciskei and Transkei territories with reflections on Tribal and Regional Authorities and Local Government Bureaux. A synoptic perspective of the effect of changes on the functioning of the Institution of Traditional Leadership is provided in some detail. This part is concluded with a brief history of the Rharhabe Kingdom. An overview of Traditional Leadership and Governance in the new South Africa since 1994 to date indicates the recognition and important role that Traditional Leadership Institutions can play. In this regard, there is policy and legislation that is in place on Traditional Leadership and Governance with a clear vision for implementation. Since 1994, there are many initiatives that have been undertaken by government in creating and maintaining an enabling environment for the efficient management and administration of the institution, transfer payments for different projects like funding the building of various Great Places and Provincial Policy Initiatives on Traditional Leadership and Governance. Institutional arrangements for Traditional Leadership Institutions reflect on the hierarchy of Traditional Leadership, for example, the position of the King as head of a Regional Authority (Ikomkhulu), the Chiefs under Kings as Heads of Traditional Authorities (Inqila) and Headmen as heads of the various Administrative Areas (locations). In order to give meaning to Government’s recognition of the Institution of Traditional Leadership, to enhance the institution and give it a role at the National, Provincial and Local levels, the government has established a National and Provincial Houses of Traditional Leaders with clear roles and responsibilities and provision for accountability of Traditional Leaders and structures. Regarding the role of Traditional Leadership Institutions in Governance and Development, it is clear that over many years, these institutions performed various governance functions. The policy framework on Traditional Leadership and Governance besides legislation specifies the duties and functions of these entities. With regard to the King Sandile Development Trust and its role in community development, the research reveals visionary leadership on the part of the Kingdom, with the Trust, since its establishment in 1999 being at the centre of all development initiatives at the Great Place besides government initiatives. The King Sandile Development Trust is therefore a legal entity established and funded in terms of law. It has its constitution, vision and clear objectives, procedural arrangements on administration, management and financial arrangements. The development role of the trust is reflected in the Queen’s Programme of Action and Implementation, headed by the Queen mother, Queen Noloyiso Sandile, the wife of His Majesty King Maxhobayakhawuleza Sandile. Besides, there are established tourism chalets providing not only revenue but also employment opportunities to many local subjects of the Kingdom. Finally, the treatise concludes with some general conclusion and recommendations and challenges that demand that traditional leaders be appropriately trained, its institutions adequately resourced, appropriately run and administered based on the need to account publicly on their performance.
