- Description: Password authentication has become ubiquitous in the cyber age. To-date, there have been several studies on country based passwords by authors who studied, amongst others, English, Finnish, Italian and Chinese based passwords. However, there has been a lack of focused study on the type of passwords that are being created in Africa and whether there are benefits in creating passwords in an African language. For this research, password databases containing LAN Manager (LM) and NT LAN Manager (NTLM) hashes extracted from South African organisations in a variety of sectors in the economy, were obtained to gain an understanding of user behaviour in creating passwords. Analysis of the passwords obtained from these hashes (using several cracking methods) showed that many organisational passwords are based on the English language. This is understandable considering that the business language in South Africa is English even though South Africa has 11 official languages. African language based passwords were derived from known English weak passwords and some of the passwords were appended with numbers and special characters. The African based passwords created using eight Southern African languages were then uploaded to the Internet to test the security around using passwords based on African languages. Since most of the passwords were able to be cracked by third party researchers, we conclude that any password that is derived from known weak English words marked no improvement in the security of a password written in an African language, especially the more widely spoken languages, namely, isiZulu, isiXhosa and Setswana.

This is in the context of Zambia being a socially conservative patriarchal and Christian nation, where the legal and traditional practices focus on the authority of the man in relationships, particularly in marriages. The lens through which this study is conducted is provided by the media imperialism thesis and its critiques. The study explores the underlying proposition of the thesis that global media are uncritically received by people in the Third World which contributes to global cultural homogenisation. Drawing on ethnographic critiques of this position, my study provides a close examination of actual viewers in actual contexts in order to understand the complex relationships that often exist between global media and local audiences. Using qualitative methods rooted in reception analysis, the study explores the pleasures women get from these soap operas and in particular, the symbolic means that these soaps provide for what has been referred to as ‘symbolic distancing’. Symbolic distancing foregrounds the way local audiences use global media to distance themselves from the cultural confines of their local environments, exposing them to other worldviews and understandings from which they can critique their own lived conditions of existence. In line with this, the study evaluates whether the viewers’ perceptions and values have been changed by the viewing of these Latin soaps.

The exploration of influence as a leadership competency amongst emerging adult males

- Description: The association between leadership, influence and power is well developed in the literature. However, there is a notable lack of research on youth leadership development, especially as it pertains to their exercise of influence. This paper was borne out of the need to explore how youth - emerging adults’ males in particular - exercise influence as a leadership competency within their voluntary leadership positions. Using semi-structured face-to-face interviews and the Critical Incident Technique (CIT), the research primarily focused on influence tactics and how they were employed. This included assessing the related power bases and principles of influence that were manifest, as well as the learning and development that occurred when reflecting on the outcome of the influence process. Data was analysed using an open coding procedure. Incidents explored in the study were primarily interpersonal in nature. This was reminiscent of lateral influence that characterised the peer to peer contextual environment of the study. The study found that in their influence pursuits, emerging adults followed a rational approach to influence. The distinguishable power bases and their relative importance in application were context dependent (Krause and Kearney, 2006:59-86). In addition, various proactive influence tactics were employed with a leaning towards those perceived as positive, honest and non-manipulative in application, which was congruent with Head Student role expectations and the culture of the organization. The utilization of social media as a communication platform from which various tactics could be launched was a novel and notable finding. Consequently, the results were presented primarily under two themes, exploring how tactics of influence are used face to face and via the social media platform. In addition, the study emphasised the ethical implications of the exercise of influence in both of these platforms and related to this, the challenge of influencing friends or close associates, without undermining leadership integrity. Overall, the various influence incidents presented and their outcomes, evidently shaped leadership development by reinforcing tactics which worked and stimulating continuous reflection and learning, adaptive strategies and the development of new means to deal with resistance and non-compliance. All of these are critical to shaping future influence behaviour. Primary recommendations include the need for a proactive approach to educating youth on leadership and influence through formal programmes, if they were to be empowered with tools to develop and maximize their leadership potential. Equally, practitioners need to be sensitized to the significance of their role as catalysts in nurturing youth leadership development. In addition, the novel use of social media as a leadership influence platform was recognised as significant and as such, a candidate for further research. Beyond the limited scope of this study, other angles worthy of further research include, factoring in elements such as gender, cross-cultural differences and the aspect of voluntary versus incentivised (or paid) leadership positions. The research is presented in an academic paper format, and is structured in three sections. These sections are written up as relatively independent sections, but are complementary in covering the full scope of the research. Section One, which is essentially a paper in a format of an academic journal article, represent the primary section and covers the results of the study, together with discussions and recommendations. This is followed by a literature review (i.e. Section Two), which delves into all the relevant literature explored. Section Three covers the methodology, research design and research procedure pursued. As part of the addendum, a comprehensive summary of the incidents explored is presented. This gives insight into the nature of the various incidents, the influence tactics preferred, power bases and influence principles manifested, together with the outcomes of the incidents. Furthermore, lessons drawn in reflection are noted, which participants viewed as critical, in that they shaped the way they now intend to exercise influence and thereby reflects their personal leadership development.

The experiences, challenges, motivations and coping strategies of informal caregivers in a Grahamstown township

- Description: The health care system in South Africa is currently under strain and it does not cater for everyone's needs. This has left a gap in society whereby you will find that the poor citizens of the country are not being catered for in terms of getting access to adequate healthcare. With this existing gap, there are Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in some of the poor communities in the country. These NGOs have volunteer caregivers who go around the community and taking care of the sick people. Research has often ignored these volunteer caregivers, this current research study investigated the experiences of these volunteer caregivers. The goals of the research study were to investigate the experiences of the caregiver, the motivations of the caregivers and the challenges that they encounter and how they cope with the challenges that arise while performing their caregiving duties. The study was based on the phenomenological paradigm. This paradigm believes that the subjective experience of the individual is an essential source of information. In-depth interviews were conducted with the four participants who took part in the study. An interview guide was utilised to help guide the interview process. Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) was used in analysing the data. IPA is a way of analysing data, which investigates how a person, in a given setting understands an experience. The findings showed that the caregivers had both negative and positive experiences. They experienced the care recipients as being appreciative of them. However, they experienced the family members of the care recipients as being uncaring; financial constraints were also a negative experience. Several challenges were stated by the participants, including a lack of government support, alcohol abuse by the care recipients and challenging working conditions. The participants were motivated to volunteer as caregivers by a number of things. Altruistic motivation was the first, which included the love for the community and the poverty in the community. Reciprocity was another motivating factor, as well as religious duty and career advancement. In this research study there was one coping strategy that came out; the participants stated that they seek advice and consult with someone or go for supervision within the organization when they are faced with a difficult situation. The findings in the research study were similar to those found in previous research. One notably different finding was that in previous research, the caregivers have been found to abuse alcohol in order to cope with stress. However, in this research study, the care recipients are the ones who are abusing alcohol. The research recommends that the government assists the informal caregivers, either financially or with infrastructure.

- Description: Integrative Summary: Small to Medium Business Enterprises (SME's) are widely recognised as the driver of economic growth. SME's are responsible for employing large sections of the working population and, in doing so, facilitate the development of skills for many thousands of workers. Whilst SME's may differ (according to various definition criteria such as size or turnover) from other types of organisation, they share one common denominator across all organisations: their overall effectiveness depends largely on the individual and collective people that make up the organisation -their employees. In this context the central question relevant to the research is "how do SME's retain their valued employee managers?" A quantitative research method was applied in the research. Data was collected by way of a structured self-administered survey questionnaire designed from a post positivist paradigm. The survey was constricted by way of modifying and adapting previous surveys designed to investigate factors that influence staff retention, to be relevant to managers employed by SME's. The sample consisted of 35 managers employed by SME's in and around East London in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The results of the research give rise to a number of clear indicators on the key retention factors of employee managers. Based on the research results SME's that want to have the best chance of retaining their employee managers need strong and effective leadership within the organisation, must address soft organisational factors that are conducive to an open and trusted working environment and the roles of managers must have inherent job factors that allow a sense of freedom to plan and execute tasks autonomously. Economic factors such as pay and financial benefits were identified through the research as being the least important factor when it came to manager retention. These conclusions provide SME owners and senior managers with insight into the factors that are most likely to influence their ability to retain employee managers.

- Description: The interest in this study was initiated by the rapid global transition of paper usage to digital systems in teaching and learning at tertiary institutions, particularly those that are signatories to the Talloires Declaration, which include Rhodes University (RU). It was discovered that there are two earlier studies (Leslie et al. 2009; Amutenya et al. 2009) that investigated and proposed recommendations towards sustainable paper usage at Rhodes University (RU). This study then investigated the response of RU to the proposed recommendations of the above mentioned studies and evaluated the conditions that promote and constrain sustainable paper usage in teaching and learning, and the attitudes of users thereof.

- Description: The interest in this study was initiated by the rapid global transition of paper usage to digital systems in teaching and learning at tertiary institutions, particularly those that are signatories to the Talloires Declaration, which include Rhodes University (RU). It was discovered that there are two earlier studies (Leslie et al. 2009; Amutenya et al. 2009) that investigated and proposed recommendations towards sustainable paper usage at Rhodes University (RU). This study then investigated the response of RU to the proposed recommendations of the above mentioned studies and evaluated the conditions that promote and constrain sustainable paper usage in teaching and learning, and the attitudes of users thereof.

In fact, the only region, where the practice of using a middleman in the supply chain of tyre production, for a certain primary manufacturer, is in South Africa. Tyre producers in other world regions, similar in market complexity to South Africa, have experienced the elimination of the middleman. Hence the question of this research, why is the middleman in the supply chain of tyre production in South Africa still a better option than that of direct business models? To begin with, the thesis stated that the middleman in the supply chain of South African tyre producers delivers better value than that of the direct business model. To prove/disprove this thesis, the principle that value is a trade-off between what you get for what you give was the basis of this research (Zeithaml, 1998). Further, a model was developed, from secondary literature, to conceptualise this trade-off to provide evidence to prove/disprove that the middleman provides greater value than value from the direct business model. From this point, the research approach was to collect data through interviews to find out the most important aspect of value created by the middleman. Data collected were analysed, using the structure of the model as a guide, to find evidence of the trade-off. This analysis provided evidence that the relationship between the middleman and the tyre producers in South Africa and between the middleman and primary product supplier is the value that the direct business model cannot replace.

As more and more black executives are climbing the corporate ladder, it is becoming all the more necessary to explore how their effective leadership development can occur with private organisations in South Africa. There are many challenges and constraints associated with the leadership development of these executives. This can be expected as they are entering an environment which has been largely white-dominated. As a result they find themselves facing the challenges of succeeding amidst negative perceptions they have experienced from their superiors and subtle pressures from subordinates. Therefore, it can only be expected that if organisations are to maintain a competitive advantage they need to understand how to effectively develop this new breed of leaders. Hence, the researcher has used a qualitative approach to investigate the complexities of the experiences of black executives in private organisations. In terms of the theoretical framework, the research focuses on some of the new approaches to leadership. It was discovered that leadership development is essentially a process that goes beyond mere training sessions, and largely involves the relationships one has within the organisation. This involves relationships with superiors, peers, and subordinates. The research indicates that if these relationships are managed effectively, leadership development is enhanced. Whilst the role of formal training programs appeared somewhat downplayed, it was clear that these programs had a strong role in terms of their psychological impact on participants. They certainly affected their perception of the organisation and their own self-efficacy. The research, therefore illustrates how there are a variety of individual and organisational attributes that form a basis for effective leadership development of blacks in private organisations. The researcher argues that if these are implemented, organisational well-being is enhanced.

Much work has been undertaken on developing the technology for the commercial culture of the species inclusive of determining the nutritional requirements for cost effective feed formulation. However, digestible energy (DE) values for specific feed ingredients were unknown. As DE values are not interchangeable between species, this study set out to determine the DE values for conventional and unconventional feed-ingredients for the formulation of an optimal feed. The ultimate goal in feed formulation is to produce a diet that supports the maximum production at the least cost. The indirect method was found to be most suitable in obtaining DE values for the catfish. Feed samples were marked by adding 2% chromic oxide as an inert indicator. The fish were then force-fed and faecal samples were obtained from the hindgut by stripping the fish 10 hours after feeding as this was found to be when the hind-gut was at its fullest and the feed maximally digested. A linear based computer programme was used to formulate experimental diets using the established DE values as an additional variable. The formulated feed was tested and compared to a commercial catfish diet and a standard reference diet (H-440). All of the newly formulated feeds were found to be cheaper to manufacture (by between 5 and 10%). Statistically (ANOVA), all of the experimental diets resulted in higher specific growth rates (SGR) than the standard reference diet. The commercial diet also resulted in a lower SGR than those experimental diets with similar protein levels.

- Description: A portable infra red gas analyzer was used to investigate the interactive effects of light, temperature, and CO,jO, ratios under controlled environmental conditions in an attempt to model gas exchange characteristics of Coix Iachryma-jobi L. Plotting light response curves as a function of temperature (20, 25 30 and 35°C) revealed no sign of light saturation even at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) close to 2000 !Lmol m-' sol. High net assimilation rates (A) of approximately 24 !Lmol CO, m"s'! were realized at 30-35°C. Assimilation (A) versus internal CO, partial pressure (C,) curves showed a steep rise with increase in C, but saturated at approximately 150 (JLII-!) and all the results, either in the absence or presence of 0" showed a similar response under all temperature regimes. C. Iachryma-jobi exhibited low CO, compensation points cr ) between 0 and 10 JLlI-! under similar experimental temperatures and either at 0 or 21%0,. The slopes of double reciprocal plots of llA versus llCi, were nearly identical and crossed the yintercept at almost identical points under all 0, concentrations. These data indicate first; that there was no apparent 0, inhibition and second; indicated that the apparent inhIbitor constant (K,) for 0, at the site of carboxylation did not change with increase in [OJ from 0 to 21% oxygen. These observations were further confirmed by results obtained from the analysis of apparent carboxylation efficiency (CE, as defined as the slope of response of A to increasing CO,), as no inhibition of A with increase of [OJ occurred. These characteristics were consistent with typical features of C,photosynthesis. The absence of 0, inhibition and low r values indicated that an efficient CO, concentrating mechanism which eliminates photorespiration exists in C. Iachryma-jobi. At the light microscope level, leaf anatomy exhibited typical C, structure viz. bundle sheath with large chloroplasts and this sheath is further surrounded by a radiate Kranz mesophyU cells. Furthermore the anatomical features suggested that C. wchryma-jobi was an NADP-ME species. Stomatal conductance (g,) to assimilation (g,/A) indicated an increase in A with decrease in g" an essential feature of improving water use efficiency (WUE), but one which drastically reduces CO, diffusion rate. The physical lintitation (stomatal lintitation, t) to CO, diffusion under various [0,] and temperatures, but constant PPFD, did not exhibit statistically significant change in t values at either 0 or 21% a, within each temperature regime, however there was a marked decrease in t as the plant approached its optimum photosynthetic temperature.

Guibourtacacidin: a new Leuco-anthocyanidin from Rhodesian copalwood; (Guibourtia coleosperma)

The heartwood extractives were fractionated by enrichment procedures involving fractional precipitation and Craig partitioning, to give a high RF (subscript) low molecular weight fraction containing the above leuco -anthocyanidin. This was further fractionated by "preparative" paper chromatography . The leuco-anthocyanidin was amorphous and present in low proportion (0.004%) in the wood. On boiling with alcoholic hydrochloric acid the compound gave an anthocyanidin which was identified as 3,7,4'-trihydroxyflavylium chloride. The degradation products formed by alkali fusion, on a micro-scale, were resorcinol and ♭-resorcylic acid, and also p (underscore)-hydroxybenzoic acid. This indicated resorcinol and phenol A and B nuclei respectively. The formation of amorphous dimethyl ether and tetra-acetoxy derivatives indicated two phenolic and two alcoholic hydroxyl groups. The above indicates that the compound was 7,4'-dihydroxyflavan- 3:4- diol and a molecular weight estimation showed it to be monomeric. Comparison of the infrared absorption spectra of the natural dimethyl ether with synthetic (±) dimethoxyflavan- 3:4-diol, to which a tentative 2:3- trans- 3:4-cis conformation had been assigned (Phatak and Kulkarni 94), showed close identity. Crystalline (±)-7, 4 '-dihydroxyflavan- 3:4 - diol was synthesised by catalytic hydrogenation over platinum oxide of the corresponoing (±) -7,4'-dihydroxyflavanonol. The flavanonol was synthesised by sodium hyposulphite reduction of the 7,4 ' -dihydroxyflavonol. The infrared absorption spectra of the natural and synthetic diols were similar but not identical. Chromatographic evidence showed the apparent identity of the synthetic and natural flavan- 3:4- diols, and two possible configurations were assigned for the natural flavan-3:4-diol. The new leuco-anthocyanidin was observed to form an O(underscore)-ethyl ether derivative on manipulation in ethanol. A monomeric leuco- fisetinidin from the heartwood was identified, by two dimensional paper chromatography, as (+) - mollisacacidin. The condensed tannins found also in the heartwood of G.(underscore)- coleosperma appear to be polymeric forms of leuco - fisetinidin and leuco - guibourtinidin. These polymeric tannins form a large proportion of the heartwood extractives and furnish high yields of fisetinidin and guibourtinidin chlorides on boiling with alcoholic hydrochloric acid. Examination of some other members of the Guibourtia spp . by paper chromatography showed that only G (underscore). coleosperma contained the new leuco - anthocyanidin as well as a leuco - fisetinidin. G. (underscore) tessmannii and G. (underscore) demeusii heartwoods contained only leuco-fisetinidin and the related polymers and a close chemical relationship to G.(underscore) coleosperma is thus apparent. G.(underscore) arnoldiana on the other hand is not chemically interrelated with the above members since it appeared to contain only leuco - cyanidin. (±) - 7,4 ' -Dihydroxyflavan- 4-ol was synthesised by hydrogenation of the corresponding flavanone over platinum oxide. Observations were made regarding its reddenig and ease of condensation.

The new leuco-anthocyanidin was observed to form an O(underscore)-ethyl ether derivative on manipulation in ethanol. A monomeric leuco- fisetinidin from the heartwood was identified, by two dimensional paper chromatography, as (+) - mollisacacidin. The condensed tannins found also in the heartwood of G.(underscore)- coleosperma appear to be polymeric forms of leuco - fisetinidin and leuco - guibourtinidin. These polymeric tannins form a large proportion of the heartwood extractives and furnish high yields of fisetinidin and guibourtinidin chlorides on boiling with alcoholic hydrochloric acid. Examination of some other members of the Guibourtia spp . by paper chromatography showed that only G (underscore). coleosperma contained the new leuco - anthocyanidin as well as a leuco - fisetinidin. G. (underscore) tessmannii and G. (underscore) demeusii heartwoods contained only leuco-fisetinidin and the related polymers and a close chemical relationship to G.(underscore) coleosperma is thus apparent. G.(underscore) arnoldiana on the other hand is not chemically interrelated with the above members since it appeared to contain only leuco - cyanidin. (±) - 7,4 ' -Dihydroxyflavan- 4-ol was synthesised by hydrogenation of the corresponding flavanone over platinum oxide. Observations were made regarding its reddenig and ease of condensation.
