- Description: The synthesis, spectroscopic characterization and photophysicochemical analysis of novel and known metallophthalocyanines are reported in this thesis. The novel lowsymmetry compounds were extensively studied. Selected phthalocyanines were conjugated to a variety of nanoparticles consisting of silver (AgNPs), gold (AuNPs) and zinc oxide (ZnO NPs) in order to improve their photophysical and photochemical behaviour. As with the phthalocyanines, the nanoparticles and phthalocyaninenanoparticle conjugates were thoroughly investigated. Research on the effect of the solvent used, as well as the influence of nanoparticle composition and shape on the properties of the phthalocyanines, were performed. The findings showed that there was a general increase in triplet quantum yields of the phthalocyanines in the presence of the nanoparticles. It was also noted that the use of different solvents directly affected the photophysicochemical properties. In the case of the nanoparticle conjugates, photophysical and photochemical changes were observed. Of significance were the gold nanostars, which decreased the degree of phthalocyanine aggregation in water, resulting in increased fluorescence lifetimes. The studies also revealed that the effect of the nanoparticle shape on the phthalocyanine properties was highly dependent on the nanoparticle material. The photodynamic antimicrobial activity of selected phthalocyanine-zinc oxide nanoparticle conjugates was investigated against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) in solution. The phthalocyanines alone exhibited remarkable growth inhibition, however the presence of the nanoparticles in the conjugates increased the photoinactivation of S. aureus.

The effects of a gradual shift rotation and a split shift nap intervention on cognitive, physiological and subjective responses under simulated night shift settings

This stems from the associated extended wakefulness, circadian disruptions and sleep loss from the inversion of the sleep wake cycle, which predisposes shift workers to reduced alertness, increased fatigue and decrements in performance capacity. These effects may be exacerbated over consecutive night shifts as a result of reductions in sleep length associated with attempting to sleep against the alerting signals of the circadian rhythm during the day. Although a variety of shift work countermeasures exist, new and innovative fatigue management strategies are needed to mitigate the effects of night work. This study proposed two night shift interventions; the Rolling rotation and a split shift nap combination. Aims: The aim of this study was to explore the effects of these interventions to a conventional Fixed night shift arrangement. Selected performance, physiological and subjective measures were applied to track any effects during a five-day shift work study. Methods: The study was laboratory-based and performance was quantified through the application of computer-based perceptual, cognitive and motor tests. Student participants (24 females and 21 males) partook in the study, which adopted a nonrepeated measures design and spanned five consecutive days. During this time, participants were required to perform a simple beading task over five 8-hour shifts. Participants were split according to sex and chronotype between four independent conditions; 1. Fixed night condition required participants to complete one afternoon shift (14h00 – 22h00) and four consecutive night shifts (22h00 - 06h00) 2. Rolling rotation condition gradually “rolled” participants into the night shift by delaying the start and end of an afternoon shift by two hours each day (16h00 – 00h00, 18h00 – 02h00, 20h00 – 04h00, 22h00 – 06h00) until the times matched that of the Fixed night condition. 3. The split shift nap system was made up of two independent groups, both of which completed one afternoon (14h00 to 22h00) and four night shifts. The Nap early condition worked from 20h00 to 08h00, napping between 00h00 and 04h00, while the Nap late condition worked from 00h00 to 12h00 and napped between 04h00 and 08h00 during the night shifts. Napping, the opportunity for which was 200 minutes occurred in the laboratory, but post shift recovery sleep, for all conditions, happened outside the laboratory. During each shift, six test batteries were completed, in which the following measures were taken: 1. Performance: beading output, eye accommodation time, choice reaction time, visual vigilance, simple reaction time, processing speed and object recognition, working memory, motor response time and tracking performance. 2. Physiological: heart rate, heart rate variability (r-MSSD, normalised Low frequency power: LFnu). 3. Self-reported measures: subjective sleepiness and reported sleep length and quality while outside the laboratory. Results: Analyses revealed that: 1. Measures of beading performance, simple reaction time, vigilance and object recognition, working memory, motor response time and control, all physiological measures, except LFnu and subjective sleepiness demonstrated the effects of time of day / fatigue, irrespective of condition. 2. There was no evidence of cumulative fatigue over the four night shifts in the performance and subjective measures and most of the physiological indicators. Beading output decreased significantly over the course of the night shifts, while reported post shift sleep length was significantly reduced with the start of the night shifts, irrespective of condition. 3. The majority of the physiological and performance measures did not differ significantly between conditions. However, there were some effects: the Rolling rotation condition produced the highest beading output compared to the Nap late condition; working memory was significantly lower in the Nap late condition compared to the other conditions. Furthermore, the nap opportunity in both the Nap early and Nap late conditions reduced subjective sleepiness, while napping during the night shift reduced post shift sleep length compared to the Rolling rotation and Fixed night conditions. There was also evidence of sleep inertia following pre-post nap test comparisons, which mainly affected visual perception tasks in both nap conditions. Sleep inertia possibly also accounted for an apparent dissociation between subjective and performance measures. Conclusions: Quantifying and interpreting the effects of night shift work in a laboratory setting has limitations. These stem mainly from the limited ecological validity of the performance outcome measures adopted and the characteristics of the sample that is tested. However, in order to fully understand the efficacy of any shift work countermeasure, the laboratory setting offers a safe, controlled environment in which to do so. The conclusions should thus be considered in light of these limitations. Night shift work negatively affected all elements of human information processing. The combination of reduced physiological arousal, extended wakefulness, increased perceptions of sleepiness and reduced total sleep obtained explained these decrements in performance. While cumulative fatigue has been reported as a challenge associated with night shift work, there was no conclusive evidence of this in the current study. In the case of the Rolling rotation, the gradual introduction to the night shift delayed the inevitable reduction in alertness and performance, which limits the viability of this intervention. The inclusion of the nap interventions was associated with reduced perceptions of sleepiness, which did not translate into improved performance, relative to the Rolling rotation and Fixed night conditions. Apart from considerations of how to manage sleep inertia post nap, the split shift nap intervention can provide an alternative to conventional night shift work arrangements.

The effects of land use on the avifauna and its conservation in a Kenyan coastal forest ecosystem, and the significance of the Arabuko Sokoke Forest to the local community

- Description: This study examines the effects of land use on the bird community of Arabuko Sokoke Forest, the largest area of coastal forest remaining in East Africa and a major Important Bird Area in mainland Kenya. Bird species diversity in three land use types (primary forest, plantation and farm lands) was compared using multivariate analysis to determine the response of different feeding guilds to habitat characteristics. The effect of habitat characteristics on overall bird diversity and specific feeding guilds was tested using linear mixed models. A total of 2600 bird observations were recorded during point counts, representing 97 bird species including 25 fruit-eating birds, 17 nectar feeders; and 60 species belonging exclusively to other feeding guilds. Land use had a significant effect on overall bird diversity and abundance. The distribution of frugivorous birds was primarily influenced by the presence of fruiting trees rather than land use type, while nectarivores were significantly affected by vertical habitat heterogeneity and vegetation type. Although the distribution of insectivorous birds is influenced by many habitat factors, proximity to natural forest, habitat heterogeneity, and the presence of large trees and fruiting trees appear to be most important to this guild. The natural forest has the greatest avian diversity and a distinctive community compared to plantation and farmlands. Patterns of habitat use by birds in the area suggest that vertical vegetation heterogeneity and complexity is especially significant in sustaining diverse and abundant bird populations, if they are in close proximity to native forests. Improvement of conservation management for the plantation and farmlands is thus critical for connectivity with other remnant primary forest patches in the area. Socio-economic data was collected from 109 forest adjacent households to determine the value of the forest to the local community and their perception of conservation issues. Arabuko Sokoke Forest is important in supplementing the livelihood needs of the local community. However, the community lacks information on the forest management plan and many people have little knowledge of local birds, which could limit their capacity to participate in conservation projects. Drivers for local community participation in conservation projects are primarily a sustainable income and the fulfillment of basic household needs. Community conservation education is needed to promote local knowledge of forest biodiversity, as well as clear frameworks for the active involvement of the local community in forest management. Support of community based projects is vital to achieve both the conservation and livelihood objectives of the Arabuko Sokoke Forest management plan.

The efficacy of a community based eccentric hamstring strengthening program in peri-urban Black South African soccer players

- Description: Introduction: Hamstring injury prevalence in soccer remains a major concern. Research in this context has focused on Caucasian populations with little attention given to other ethnic groups. The compatibility and applicability of such research to the South African context, particularly at an amateur level, may be minimal due to fundamental differences in physical characteristics, as well as complexities with regards to implementation. The aim of this investigation was therefore twofold. 1) Identify the lower extremity strength and performance profile of Peri-urban Amateur South African Players, and 2) Assess the efficacy of a community based intervention through the use of the Nordic Hamstring Exercise. Methods: 19 Black male Eastern Cape amateur players participated in a 12 week randomly controlled trial (9 = Control, 10 = Intervention). All participants completed regular training, while the intervention group, in addition, performed the Nordic Hamstring exercise post warm up. The incremental program design was taken from Mjolsnes et al. (2004), with a progressive increase in both sets and repetitions. Compliance was defined as completion of the required exercises for that session. Isokinetic strength evaluations (at 60°.s-1 and 180°.s-1) including assessment of peak torque and total work, as well as performance measures of countermovement and squat jump, were completed pre and post intervention, with the profile of the Peri-urban player the combined responses of both groups at baseline. Additionally, both the functional ratio (Eccentric Hamstrings/Concentric Quadriceps) and eccentric utilization ratio (Countermovement Jump/Squat Jump) were calculated. Results: Concentric quadriceps peak torque at baseline reported values of 195 (±22) Nm and 141 (±21) Nm at 60°.s-1 and 180°.s-1. Values of 162 (±21) Nm were observed for peak torque of the eccentric hamstrings at 60°.s-1, while 157 (±18) Nm was indicated at 180°.s-1. Mean functional ratio responses were observed as 0.83 (±0.11) and 1.12 (±0.16) for 60°.s-1 and 180°.s-1 respectively. Additionally, the eccentric utilization ratio responses were recorded as 1.04 (±0.08). Regarding the intervention, concentric quadriceps total work of the dominant limb significantly improved over the time course of experimentation within the intervention group. Other quadriceps variables, concentric hamstrings, squat jump capability and performance measures all reported no significant changes (p>0.05) over the course of assessment when compared to the control. Eccentric hamstrings peak torque observed significant improvements (p<0.05) of between 5.72 and 12.82 % within the intervention group, while the countermovement jump indicated a significant 15.59 % increase (p<0.05). Additionally, the functional ratio and the eccentric utilization ratio both indicated no significant changes (p>0.05), with a 2.48-7.66 % and 5.33 % improvement noted following completion of assessment. Conclusion: Isokinetic responses at baseline observed decreased quadriceps strength, and increased hamstring strength when compared to both amateur and professional populations examined in previous studies, for both isokinetic testing speeds. Additionally, performance measures indicated similar responses to other amateur populations. Regarding the intervention, significant improvements in eccentric hamstring peak torque and countermovement jump indicate the partial success of the present intervention. Additionally, while the functional ratio and eccentric utilization ratio reported no significant changes, improvements were noted within the intervention group while the control noted no change. The Nordic hamstring lower therefore resulted in strength improvements within the eccentric hamstrings, reported as a significant factor for injury risk, however, such changes were not sufficient to significantly impact the functional ratio. It can be concluded that community based programs within South Africa have the potential to be effective; however, there are many barriers to implementation, including, language, ethnic and cultural differences, while a lack of resources and infrastructure play a significant role in a lack of development. More research of this nature is required to provide scientific support for structures and guidelines for the peri-urban community based South African player, to ensure the efficacy of internationally successful interventions such as the Nordic exercise.

The EPR paradox: back from the future

- Description: The Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) thought experiment produced a problem regarding the interpretation of quantum mechanics provided for entangled systems. Although the thought experiment was reformulated mathematically in Bell's Theorem, the conclusion regarding entanglement correlations is still debated today. In an attempt to provide an explanation of how entangled systems maintain their correlations, this thesis investigates the theory of post-state teleportation as a possible interpretation of how information moves between entangled systems without resorting to nonlocal action. Post-state teleportation describes a method of communicating to the past via a quantum information channel. The resulting picture of the EPR thought experiment relied on information propagating backward from a final boundary condition to ensure all correlations were maintained. Similarities were found between this resolution of the EPR paradox and the final state solution to the black hole information paradox and the closely related firewall problem. The latter refers to an apparent conflict between unitary evaporation of a black hole and the strong subadditivity condition. The use of observer complementarity allows this solution of the black hole problem to be shown to be the same as a seemingly different solution known as “ER=EPR", where ‘ER’ refers to an Einstein-Rosen bridge or wormhole.

The aim of this study was to gain an in-depth understanding of the lived experiences of individuals recovering from a substance use disorder. An interpretive phenomenological method was used to elicit the fundamentals of recovery as experienced by the participants. Random purposeful sampling was used and guaranteed that appropriate participants were selected. The exploration of a relationship between leadership styles and organizational commitment of Richards Bay Coal Terminal employees

RBCT recognizes that its lifeblood is the human capital it retains and that achieving a competitive edge equitably and fairly through its people is a priority (du Preez, 2012). In the modern organization operating in an environment of uncertainty and constant change, employee’s commitment to the organization can be a critical determinant of its success or failure in anchoring a competitive advantage (Ulrich, 1998). The current study explored a relationship between the full range leadership styles of supervisors and the organizational commitment of the subordinates to the organization. The literature reviewed in the study includes two models; the first model is by Bass and Avolio and is referred to as the full range leadership model (FRL). This is the independent variable of the research. The dependent variable is organizational commitment, which belongs to the three component model by Meyer and Allen. These models each contain an instrument which was used on a sample of 120 non-supervisory employees. The independent variable used an instrument called the multifactor leadership questionnaire (MLQ) and the dependent used the organizational commitment questionnaire (OCQ). The data collected with these two questionnaires was then subjected to statistical scrutiny. A two-tailed Pearson correlation analysis was conducted to ascertain the strength and direction of the linear relationship, but most importantly to, at 95%-99% confidence, ascertain the statistical significance of the relationships. The findings of the study reflected no statistically significant relationships between transactional leadership and all of the three components of organizational commitment. The two components; affective and normative commitment, both reported a significant relationship with laissez-faire, whilst continuance commitment reflected insignificance. A positive significant relationship between transformational leadership and affective commitment was evident. This leadership style demonstrated no statistically significant relationship between it and continuance and normative commitment. The combined findings suggested that transactional leadership style of supervisors is somewhat unrelated to the subordinate’s need, desire and or sense of obligation to remain employed. A more transformational style of leadership appears to inspire a desire to sustain employment and affectively commit to the organization, whilst this style bears no relation to the need and sense of moral obligation of the subordinate to maintain employment. Laissez-faire reported a weak insignificant negative relationship with continuance commitment. The result suggests the independence of the subordinates’ need to maintain employment to the lack of leadership presence of the supervision. The significant relationship between laissez-faire and normative commitment may be accepted as indicative of how the absence of leadership is related to the employee’s recognition of no developmental intentions demonstrated by the supervisor. Although weak, the relationship between laissez-faire and affective commitment entails that the more prevalent the non-leadership (absence of leadership) style of the supervisor, the less desire do subordinates demonstrate to remain employed.

The gendered appropriation of the mobile phone for online health information by youths in Zimbabwean tertiary learning institutions

- Description: The study uses domestication of technology and Cultural Studies theories to investigate how youth in three institutions of tertiary learning in Harare, Zimbabwe are accessing health-related information online using their smart phones. The study critically examines how youths deploy these digital media technologies to construct their identities in a context where social and political power is unevenly distributed. To understand these issues, the study uses a triangulated research design comprising a social survey, in-depth individual interviews and field observation for data collection. Results from this data gathering showed that the use of digital media technologies differ across gender, at least in terms of the distribution of online health seeking practices between male and female youths. According to the survey results, more women tend to use their mobile phones to access health-related information. Data from the individual in-depth interviews showed that the most significant site of social change (social disruption) relates to how digital media facilitates emerging new identities (i.e. identity in the broader sense as well as health-related and sexual health identities). For both young men and young women, mobile phones are used precisely for image management, peer acceptance and the desire to define respective feminities and masculinities within their social networks. Both male and female youths assert they are able to access a variety of information online, and some of this information would not easily accessible when sought from traditional structures such as their parents. This way, youth feel that digital media technologies allow them to cultivate their own preferred identities outside the purview of parental authority and social control. Drawing on postmodern literature, such emerging identities are predicated on cultural volatility, unpredictability, decentralisation and refusal to fixation and conformity to socially constructed identities about being a youth, or being a young Zimbabwean woman or man, for example. Thus, the use of mobile phones and mobile Internet by youths in Zimbabwe to access health-related information has sociopolitical significance, because it allows young people to fashion preferred identities that resists entrenched regimes of social power. For young people in Zimbabwe, online health seeking practices precisely reflects attempt towards negotiating with and circumvent the structural limitations of either an expensive health care system or the general curiosity associated with growing up. That way, it is arguable that youth use digital media technologies to help them exercise some level of social autonomy and agency in dealing with everyday life. Individual in-depth interviews demonstrated that mobile phones and mobile Internet can thus be seen as opening up more spaces for youth to learn more about issues about growing up, sexuality and adolescents that a conservative society such as Zimbabwe traditionally consider as ‘inappropriate’ for youth consumption. They argued that the inability of parents to discuss with them issues about growing up often result in them “finding out on our own” using digital media technologies to satisfy the desire to wean themselves from what they view as arbitrary and asymmetrical social power. The study demonstrated that youth use the mobile phone to challenge the social world of adults and to show resistance to it, thereby strengthening a subculture as well as constructing an identity. However, despite the positive attributes of social capital, connectivity and personalised experience afforded by the mobile phone, the mobile phone is sometimes a source of conflict in relationships between young men and women; that is, between unmarried partners. Young women reported that their boyfriends often force them to disclose who they communicate with using their mobile phones. They also reported that their boyfriends often did some random surveillance of their social media contacts and activities. Thus, whilst one of the mobile phone’s most powerful attribute is its ability to offer personalised experience, as well as offer synchronised and unlimited access to distant connections, results from in-depth interviews showed that some unwritten expectations and norms dictated that young men closely watch their ‘girlfriends’ social media activities, including their online search activities. As a result, privacy as well as the much touted relationship between mobile phone and women’s autonomy becomes contested arenas. Even at young ages, and before marriage, women are socialised to show subservience to their partners by allowing them access to their mobile phones.

The impact of three different footwear conditions on individual biomechanical, physiological and perceptual responses during running.

- Description: Background: Despite the introduction of running footwear in the 1970’s, running injury rates continue to be unacceptably high. The subsequent revival of barefoot running and the introduction of minimalist footwear occurred, in an attempt to reduce injury rates and increase performance. There is much contention in the literature around the effectiveness of these footwear conditions. Furthermore individual responses have recently been proposed to provide more accurate and reflective conclusions than the use of mean data. Objectives: Twofold: a) to compare the biomechanical, physiological and perceptual responses between the shod, minimalist and barefoot footwear conditions and b) to assess and compare individual responses under these footwear conditions. Methods: 26 well-trained, male, habitually shod endurance runners, aged between 18 - 30 years completed three experimental sessions on an indoor runway and motorized treadmill. Each session was completed in either the shod, minimalist or barefoot condition, running at 15km.h-1. Variables assessed included stride rate, stride length, impact peak, vertical impact and average loading rate and strike time (biomechanical); heart rate, oxygen consumption and electromyography (physiological); and rating of perceived exertion and body discomfort (perceptual). Results: Biomechanics – Stride rate and stride length showed a significant (p<0.001) increase and decrease respectively when running in the minimalist or barefoot conditions versus shod. Running barefoot versus the minimalist and shod conditions resulted in a significantly (p<0.001) greater vertical impact loading rate. Strike time was significantly (p=0.008) reduced running in the minimalist and barefoot conditions versus shod. Physiology – Running barefoot versus shod resulted in a significantly (p=0.02) reduced heart rate and Tibialis Anterior activity (p=0.005). There was a large variability in individual responses for many variables, with responders and non-responders seen. Conclusion: The study suggests that there are significant differences between all three forms of running for some variables. It was further noted that there is support for the proposal that individual responses are highly variable and should be analysed accordingly

The influence of introduced forest management practices on transformative social learning in a selected social-ecological forest community : a case of PFM and REDD projects at Pugu and Kazimzumbwi Forest Reserves in Tanzania

- Description: This research investigates the influence of introduced forest management approaches on transformative social learning in the community surrounding the Pugu and Kazimzumbwi forest reserves in Tanzania from 2000 to 2015. The term transformative social learning reflects an understanding of learning processes that emerge through conscious changes in the perspectives of individuals or communities while interacting with forest management practices. The investigation explores the learning (if any) that occurred in the community and how and why the learning occurred. It also explores whether the learning was social and transformative and examines the conditions that enable or constrain transformative social learning at the Pugu and Kazimzumbwi community. Thus, the three concepts of social learning, transformative learning, and social practices are central to the research. Participatory Forest Management (PFM) emerged globally in the early 1980s to mobilise rural capabilities and resources in development and environmental stewardship. The Pugu and Kazimzumbwi community was introduced to Participatory Forest Management (PFM) projects by the late 1990s. The recent global focus on empowering communities around forests has drawn attention towards transformational adaptation to climate change impacts and building resilience capacities. As a result, in 2011 the Pugu and Kazimzumbwi community started working with a project for Reduction of Emissions through Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD), which forms a key focus in this study as the most recently introduced PFM with embedded social learning assumptions. This research is designed and conducted as a qualitative case study. The research seeks to study the complex object of socially and contextually constructed learning through a systemic exploration of learning,using semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, analysis of documents and archival records as well as observations and a reflexive workshop. Supportive information throughfield notes and audio voice and video recording was also generated. A contextual profile of the research site was conducted in March 2012, prior to the actual data collection in 2013 and 2014. Field explorations during the contextual profile helped to describe the research site and promote initial understanding of the context. During data collection, field inquiries based on interactive relationships between a researcher and participants stimulated practice memories and people’s living experiences with forestry and the introduced PFM projects under examination. Analysis of data employed analytical modes of induction, abduction and retroduction. Thick descriptions of learning obtained from fieldi based interactionswere produced before re-contextualising data through theoretical lenses. The research employed realist social theory by Archer (1995), under-laboured by critical realism, and practice theory advanced by Schatzki (2012) and Kemmis et al. (2014). The research process as a whole was underlaboured by the layered ontology of critical realism which proposes emergence of phenomena in open systems as shaped by interacting mechanisms which in this study were both material / ecological and social /political /economic /cultural. - Description: This research investigates the influence of introduced forest management approaches on transformative social learning in the community surrounding the Pugu and Kazimzumbwi forest reserves in Tanzania from 2000 to 2015. The term transformative social learning reflects an understanding of learning processes that emerge through conscious changes in the perspectives of individuals or communities while interacting with forest management practices. The investigation explores the learning (if any) that occurred in the community and how and why the learning occurred. It also explores whether the learning was social and transformative and examines the conditions that enable or constrain transformative social learning at the Pugu and Kazimzumbwi community. Thus, the three concepts of social learning, transformative learning, and social practices are central to the research. Participatory Forest Management (PFM) emerged globally in the early 1980s to mobilise rural capabilities and resources in development and environmental stewardship. The Pugu and Kazimzumbwi community was introduced to Participatory Forest Management (PFM) projects by the late 1990s. The recent global focus on empowering communities around forests has drawn attention towards transformational adaptation to climate change impacts and building resilience capacities. As a result, in 2011 the Pugu and Kazimzumbwi community started working with a project for Reduction of Emissions through Deforestation and forest Degradation (REDD), which forms a key focus in this study as the most recently introduced PFM with embedded social learning assumptions. This research is designed and conducted as a qualitative case study. The research seeks to study the complex object of socially and contextually constructed learning through a systemic exploration of learning,using semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, analysis of documents and archival records as well as observations and a reflexive workshop. Supportive information throughfield notes and audio voice and video recording was also generated. A contextual profile of the research site was conducted in March 2012, prior to the actual data collection in 2013 and 2014. Field explorations during the contextual profile helped to describe the research site and promote initial understanding of the context. During data collection, field inquiries based on interactive relationships between a researcher and participants stimulated practice memories and people’s living experiences with forestry and the introduced PFM projects under examination. Analysis of data employed analytical modes of induction, abduction and retroduction. Thick descriptions of learning obtained from fieldi based interactionswere produced before re-contextualising data through theoretical lenses. The research employed realist social theory by Archer (1995), under-laboured by critical realism, and practice theory advanced by Schatzki (2012) and Kemmis et al. (2014). The research process as a whole was underlaboured by the layered ontology of critical realism which proposes emergence of phenomena in open systems as shaped by interacting mechanisms which in this study were both material / ecological and social /political /economic /cultural. It was revealed that nurses often used sentimental work and emotion work in performing their tasks as this made their work easier. Lastly, the research revealed that external factors like overcrowding and shortages in personnel, accompanied by the emotional demands on nurses’ work has adverse effect on nurses work environment. The dissertation has contributed to the limited body of knowledge about emotional labour in the South African context and the lived experiences of nurses deploying their labour to patients.

Although the assessment of GD practical work exemplifies these pressures and objectives, its characteristics and practices set it apart from many of the more standard forms of assessment found in HE. Not only is GD practical work predominantly visual rather than text-based, but complex achievements and tacit knowledge are assessed. This form of assessment traditionally relies on panel or group marking by connoisseurs who consider what is commonly termed ‘person’, ‘process’ and ‘product’ when making value judgements. Therefore, in GD assessment knowledge, the design product, the graphic designer and what the graphic designer does may all be valued. GD assessment, where outcomes are not easily stated, relies on the tacit expertise of assessors and can often be perceived to be subjective and unreliable. It therefore sits uncomfortably with results-driven HE and institutional priorities. In light of this context and the complex and social nature of GD assessment, a critical realist approach provided the guiding metatheory for this case study. Critical realism considers the unseen but real mechanisms that exist and interact within a context to create a phenomenon such as an assessment practice. In this case study the knowledge-structuring theories of Basil Bernstein and Karl Maton were used to uncover these mechanisms. Bernstein and Maton propose that new knowledge, the curriculum and pedagogy, which includes assessment, communicate the valued disciplinary knowledge and who controls these communications. For this study the institutional documents and voices of assessors provided insight into the GD assessment practice; data was generated through a lecturer survey, the study guides and assessor conversations at both the formative and summative assessment stages. Given the significance of both knowledge and expertise in GD, Specialisation, one of the Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) dimensions, provided the conceptual tool whereby the generated data were analysed and categorised, and the underlying valued knowledge-knower structures, or specialisation codes, were identified. The identified specialisation codes revealed a number of code clashes, matches and shifts, which highlighted instances of mixed or conflicting communication regarding what was valued and used in GD assessment. These clashes, matches and shifts have significant implications for curriculum design, pedagogy and assessment. As a result the findings may have relevance for students, lecturers and assessors who work in practice-based fields which require the assessment of complex achievements and rely on a specialised gaze to judge standards. Informed by the findings of this study, I argue that there is a fundamental conflict between what is valued within the broader national South African Higher Education system and Private Higher Education institutional context, and the nature of GD assessment. The broader structures, guided by a techno-rationalist approach to assessment and the pressures of massification, success, compliance and institutional efficiencies, value explicitly-stated outcomes and criteria, propositional knowledge and a positivist ideal of one correct mark for any one assessment, while the GD assessment practice values the more social and tacit elements of procedural knowledge and a specialist knower as evidenced in a largely tacit GD gaze that assessors possess and students aim to develop. The uncovering of the knowledge-knower structures used in GD assessment has the potential to make the assessed gaze more explicit to lecturers, assessors and ultimately to students. My findings offer a deeper understanding of the assessment of knower code disciplines which require a specialist gaze for the judgement of student work, and the pressures experienced in this type of assessment in a HE context.

- Description: Doctor Trudy Thomas is a leader that served; as a medical doctor and as a public servant over five decades during and after the apartheid era in South Africa. The aim of this qualitative study was to identify the leadership characteristics that are evident in Doctor Thomas, the former MEC for Health for the Province of the Eastern Cape; as a leader and to explore how they developed over five decades, given her role within healthcare in South Africa. The first requirement of a servant-leader according to Robert Greenleaf (the contemporary pioneer of servant-leadership) (Greenleaf, 1977), is that the leader is a servant first and starts with a desire to serve. Doctor Thomas started her professional life as a medical missionary doctor, a profession that by its nature is serving and ultimately healing, in the poor rural communities of the Eastern Cape. Her leadership grew out of her initial concern for her patients and their communities and by the opportunities that she was presented with to apply her skills to serve. She was able to identify the deeper needs within these communities and was able to envision practical solutions to these problems, enlisting the assistance of others. Throughout her leadership journey she exhibited humility, and many other trademarks of a servant-leader. She did not see herself as a leader, believing rather that it was a privilege to serve and help people. This study was therefore able to conclude that the leadership that Doctor Thomas has exhibited is that of a servant-leader and that her leadership journey was unintentional and grew out of her desire and ability to serve. This thesis consists of three separate yet interrelated sections. Section One, The Academic Case Study is a holistic, biographical academic case study on an individual. The outcomes of this research are presented as an academic paper, which includes a condensed literature review, results and discussion, as well as recommendations for future research. It also presents recommendations regarding the application of servant-leadership in service industries like Healthcare in South Africa. The presentation of the results is predominantly qualitative with some quantitative aspects. Section Two, The Literature Review presents an extensive review of literature that relates to the phenomena of leadership; servant-leadership; leader and leadership development; servant-leadership development through service and finally servant-leadership in South Africa. Other aspects like Ubuntu and Unintentional leadership are examined. The literature review conducted serves as a broad foundation for understanding servant-leadership but does not purely focus on the issues of this individual study. Section Three, The Research Methodology is an outline of the research aim and objectives, and the research paradigm that has been adopted. The discussion also details the research methodology; the case study method; an inductive approach; an intersubjective position; the individual researched; data collection techniques and analysis; objectivity; issues of quality; ethics; and the limitations of this research.

The mediating processes within social learning: women’s food and water security practices in the rural Eastern Cape

- Description: The focus of this study was to explore the implicit and explicit mediating processes within the social learning of women’s food and water security practices in the rural Eastern Cape, South Africa. The study was undertaken in response to a growing problem of learning resources being decontextualised and therefore being of little relevance or use to the everyday practices of the people they were developed for. The central thesis of this study is that if the mediating processes that shape practice and learning are understood then these practices and learning can be better supported. One of the main foci of this study therefore is the concept of mediation and the importance of understanding the implicit and explicit mediating processes that shape learning and practice within the context of rainwater harvesting and food gardening practices of rural women. The study interprets these as social learning processes after the work of Lev Vygotsky and post-Vygotskian learning and activity development research, which recognises that all learning is socially mediated. This study also attempts to show that ontological factors also shape social learning processes via structural mediations (which are often also socially structured over time in history). Working within the broad framework of change oriented social learning, education for sustainability and the southern African water and food nexus the study is focused around two central research questions: 1) What are the mediating processes evident in and surrounding the learning of rainwater harvesting in the context of women’s water and food security in rural communities? And 2) How can a question-based learning resource extend the learning practices in this context? Drawing on three sensitising concepts of dialectics, reflexivity and agency, the study worked with Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), underpinned by critical realism, to reveal how the learning of rainwater and food gardening practitioners is constrained and enabled by mediating processes. The theory of mediation provided a useful theoretical lens with which to examine data generated. A case study approach was used in two sites in the rural Eastern Cape. The first was Cata village in the Amathole district and the second was a peri-urban settlement called Glenconnor in the Cacadu district. Each case study is constituted within a networked activity system. The study also used a narrative inquiry approach in order to bring to life the case studies, activity systems and some of the dynamics of social learning within the study. The methodological tools of document analysis, observations, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions were used to explore the implicit and explicit mediating processes that shape research participants’ rainwater harvesting and food gardening practices and their learning. Inductive, abductive and retroductive modes of inference were used to analyse data in and across case studies. One of the first findings of this study is that learning is embedded in and emergent from context in that it is mediated by implicit and explicit processes within each context. This makes such learning social, in the sense of social used by Vygotsky. The second finding showed that implicit and explicit mediation processes are constantly interacting in a dialectical process whether people are conscious of this interplay or not. This is an important dynamic to understand when trying to bring about societal transformation through education. Understanding the interaction between the implicit and explicit alerts researchers to the sociocultural dynamics inherent within social learning processes and therefore informs how learning resources and educational and development programmes should be designed and implemented. This study contributes to new knowledge in the environmental education field and the water knowledge sector. It makes a theoretical and empirical contribution to the body of knowledge concerned with socially mediated learning and situated learning approaches. The study illustrates how learning is embedded in context and also how learning emerges in relation to context via interactions between implicit and explicit mediation processes, and considers what this means for learning and development in the rural nexus of water and food security practices. This study also contributes to the growing body of post-Vygotskian social learning research in southern Africa that is being developed in the context of cultural historical activity theory as it shows the dialectical relationship that exists between implicit and explicit forms of mediation as these are embedded in, emergent from, and are externally mediated into activity systems in rural community contexts. This study contributes to a second area of knowledge: the water sector. With a background in anthropology which sensitised the researcher to contextual factors and approaching the study through an educational lens, the data has been worked with to surface and present the nuanced mediating processes that shape the learning and knowledge around water issues. This way of working and this focus on the socio-cultural is relatively new in the water sector in South Africa and gains significance in the light of an emergent interest in more complex social studies in the water sector which has traditionally been dominated by natural sciences and engineering. The significance of this study for rural South African women’s lives is that by understanding and taking account of their history, context, struggles and experiences, their learning and practices can be better supported through more relevant learning resources and programmes.

- Description: The focus of this study was to explore the implicit and explicit mediating processes within the social learning of women’s food and water security practices in the rural Eastern Cape, South Africa. The study was undertaken in response to a growing problem of learning resources being decontextualised and therefore being of little relevance or use to the everyday practices of the people they were developed for. The central thesis of this study is that if the mediating processes that shape practice and learning are understood then these practices and learning can be better supported. One of the main foci of this study therefore is the concept of mediation and the importance of understanding the implicit and explicit mediating processes that shape learning and practice within the context of rainwater harvesting and food gardening practices of rural women. The study interprets these as social learning processes after the work of Lev Vygotsky and post-Vygotskian learning and activity development research, which recognises that all learning is socially mediated. This study also attempts to show that ontological factors also shape social learning processes via structural mediations (which are often also socially structured over time in history). Working within the broad framework of change oriented social learning, education for sustainability and the southern African water and food nexus the study is focused around two central research questions: 1) What are the mediating processes evident in and surrounding the learning of rainwater harvesting in the context of women’s water and food security in rural communities? And 2) How can a question-based learning resource extend the learning practices in this context? Drawing on three sensitising concepts of dialectics, reflexivity and agency, the study worked with Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT), underpinned by critical realism, to reveal how the learning of rainwater and food gardening practitioners is constrained and enabled by mediating processes. The theory of mediation provided a useful theoretical lens with which to examine data generated. A case study approach was used in two sites in the rural Eastern Cape. The first was Cata village in the Amathole district and the second was a peri-urban settlement called Glenconnor in the Cacadu district. Each case study is constituted within a networked activity system. The study also used a narrative inquiry approach in order to bring to life the case studies, activity systems and some of the dynamics of social learning within the study. The methodological tools of document analysis, observations, in-depth interviews and focus group discussions were used to explore the implicit and explicit mediating processes that shape research participants’ rainwater harvesting and food gardening practices and their learning. Inductive, abductive and retroductive modes of inference were used to analyse data in and across case studies. One of the first findings of this study is that learning is embedded in and emergent from context in that it is mediated by implicit and explicit processes within each context. This makes such learning social, in the sense of social used by Vygotsky. The second finding showed that implicit and explicit mediation processes are constantly interacting in a dialectical process whether people are conscious of this interplay or not. This is an important dynamic to understand when trying to bring about societal transformation through education. Understanding the interaction between the implicit and explicit alerts researchers to the sociocultural dynamics inherent within social learning processes and therefore informs how learning resources and educational and development programmes should be designed and implemented. The participatory development and implementation of a facilitator’s manual for the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding

Identification of facilitating and constraining factors which affect breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding practices is thus important. The promotion of exclusive breastfeeding is essential for improved infant health and development, especially if it takes into consideration the broader cultural and socio-economic aspects influencing these practices. This study follows up on an initial project conducted in Glenmore and Ndwayana, two rural communities in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The current study aimed at working with community care workers who are associated with two community based organisations, who work within three communities, Glenmore, Ndwayana and Grahamstown. The study objectives were to identify the factors that influence the adoption of exclusive breastfeeding in the communities researched, to conduct workshops with the community workers on exclusive breastfeeding practices, as well as to develop and implement a facilitator’s manual for the promotion of exclusive breastfeeding. Method: Using the community based participatory research approach and the PEN-3 theoretical framework to guide the research process, individual semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 community care workers to identify the factors that affect breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding. Through participatory involvement and a cyclical research process, a facilitator’s manual on breastfeeding was developed, which was used during the workshops in the training of community care workers on breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding practices. A pre and post intervention knowledge questionnaire was given to the community care workers to complete before and after the workshops. The facilitator’s manual was modified based on 14 months of consistent interaction with the community care workers, who provided feedback on improving the content as well as on how to enhance the cultural appropriateness of the facilitator’s manual during guided focus group discussions. Readability testing also guided further modification of the facilitator’s manual. Results:The major findings confirmed that exclusive breastfeeding for six months was no longer a common practice in these three communities. Factors affecting breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding were classified as perceptions (knowledge attitudes and beliefs), enablers (resources and facilities) and nurturers (people), in accordance with the PEN-3 model thematic categories. The knowledge questionnaire, semi-structured interview results, and data from the workshops showed that the community care workers were not sufficiently equipped with information on breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding. The facilitator’s manual development and modification was made possible by inputs from the community care workers and the community based organisation liaisons. A culturally appropriate, community specific facilitator’s manual for the promotion of breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding was produced. Conclusion: The factors affecting breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding were identified. These factors were useful in facilitating discussions on how to improve breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding practices in the communities researched. The facilitator’s manual and the workshops were useful in equipping community care workers with knowledge on breastfeeding and exclusive breastfeeding. The involvement of community based organisations will assist to ensure sustainability of breastfeeding promotion by community care workers by adopting the facilitator’s manual as part of their women and child development programmes.

The past in the present: race, gender and transnationalism in Zoë Wicomb’s October and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah

Wicomb and Adichie share an interest in representing the lives of people who have been historically marginalised by racial and gender classifications. This thesis will argue that historical and stereotypical ways of looking at people, particularly African people, are still prevalent in the twenty-first century. Wicomb’s interest is in the coloured community and the impact that apartheid ideology has had on it. She shows, as this thesis will argue, that notions of shame and respectability still influence the coloured community, post-1994, in the same ways they did under apartheid. Furthermore, the thesis will show that religion, which was used to justify apartheid, has been instrumental in maintaining racist and sexist norms in the coloured community in post-apartheid South Africa. Adichie’s novel, on the other hand, shows the impact of gender norms in Nigeria on her female characters. Unlike characters in Wicomb’s novel, Adichie’s mostly experience racial bias when they move to Western countries. This thesis will argue that many Western countries, which were the main beneficiaries of colonialism, continue to ‘other’ Africans, in spite of their claims to respect all human beings. Wicomb’s and Adichie’s novels depict characters that are moving between different continents, along with the impact that this has on them. In the twenty-first century, more people are moving between different spaces and, as a result, interacting with different cultures. These migrations, as this thesis will show, give rise to paradoxical circumstances: people are still being judged according to their race and gender, in spite of the freedom that these moves are supposed to lead to. Of central importance to both novels then is the question of home and belonging. Since people are moving between different continents, is it still possible to belong to one place? Is it in fact possible to belong at all? These are some of the questions that will be raised and answered in this thesis. Lastly, the thesis will look at the thematic representations of reading and writing in the novels under consideration. This is most evident in Adichie’s novel where her main character starts blogging as a way to express her dissatisfaction with the racist and sexist environment she encounters in the United States of America. The thesis will explore how Adichie examines blogging as a mode of communication that is unique to the twenty-first century. It will argue that it is perhaps through new media that historically subjugated subjects, such as African people and women, will be able to express themselves. Less hackneyed modes of communication might provide the necessary channels for those who have historically been denied voice to finally find it.

The phytogeography of Southern Mistbelt Forests of the Eastern Cape, South Africa

- Description: In the Eastern Cape, a moisture gradient (from west to east) exists along the Escarpment where patches of Southern Mistbelt Forests (SMF) occur. There is a notable profusion of plants in these forests, but the factors that drive plant species composition and abundance in these patches is poorly understood and such knowledge is critical if we are to address or mitigate the problems imposed by global change. Many of our ideas on plant community assembly are based on the premise that species differ in their environmental requirements for successful regeneration, especially when young. The aims of this study were to document the floristic diversity of poorly known patches of Southern Mistbelt Forests in the Eastern Cape and identify the environmental factors that influence plant community composition in these forest patches. Twenty six forest patches across the Eastern Cape were sampled. In each forest 400m2 circular plots were constructed. The diameter at breast height and stem counts for the tree species was taken and the % cover of the herbaceous species was recorded. General collections were also made to supplement the plot data in order to obtain a comprehensive flora for each forest patch. All sampling was done during the summer season of 2013 and 2014. Using plot data, Hierarchal Cluster Analysis and Multidimensional Scaling Analysis were done to compare similarities between patches. Plots from the same forest patch clustered which indicated that the species composition in each forest patch was unique. However, this pattern went down when only tree species were considered. Plant diversity also varied between patches; with those located in the east being generally more diverse than those in the west are. Clustering patterns in fragmented communities and differences in species diversity indicate evidence of species “nestedness”. Analysis of nestedness indicated that these forest patches were significantly nested. To identify which environmental variables might be correlated with both species diversity and nestedness, twelve environmental variables was selected for analysis using Canonical Correspondence Analysis and Principal Component Analysis. Results show that Mean Annual Precipitation, Mean Annual Potential Evapotranspiration, and percentage of Organic Matter of the soil were most strongly correlated with the patterns of diversity observed in these forest patches. Regression analysis indicated that Mean Annual Precipitation accounted for most of the variation in species diversity, especially for the herbaceous species. The herbaceous species thus show a greater sensitivity to “climate filtering” as a consequence of rainfall gradients. With the implementation of suitable monitoring programs, changes in abundance or even local extinction of these species can act as an early warning indicator of the possible long-term effects of climate change on forest communities.
