Description: With the growth in the use of technology in sports, there has been an improvement in sporting performances. Some may argue that the two go hand in hand, while others will write it off as coincidence. Nevertheless the use of technology in sport is seen on a daily basis. Cricket uses Hotspot, tennis uses Hawk-Eye and rugby uses slow motion video replays. In these sports codes, technology is already an aid to umpires. Little is known, however, about the technologies used to assist coaches in sports codes such as netball. This study investigated the factors impacting the introduction of information technology in the coaching of netball. The study commenced with using the term technology in the broader sense of the word to gain an understanding from netball coaches as to how technology could be incorporated into the sport. It was later narrowed down more specifically to computer technologies. The investigation was done at the Spar National Netball Championships in 2012, where coaches were surveyed about the preparation for the tournament of the provincial teams. The surveys included questions to coaches regarding the technologies used in preparation for a national tournament. The results obtained from the coaches were used to identify the current technologies used. Interviews were conducted after the analysis of the initial results to probe into the potential use of social media as a tool to assist coaches. Based on the results of the study, a number of factors that impact on the introduction of technology in the coaching of netball were identified. The factors and basic guidelines were validated through expert focus groups. Based on the findings from the experts, the factors and guidelines were refined. It is envisaged that the findings from this research can be used to assist netball coaches in deciding how to introduce the use of information technology into the sport.

The nanocrystals were characterized by UV–visible spectrometry, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The as prepared gold nanoparticles were then conjugated to a quaternized 2,(3)-tetra [2-(dimethylamino) ethanethio] substituted Al(OH) phthalocyanine (complex 1). The conjugation of phthalocyanines with gold nanoparticles resulted in a decrease in the fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes. Description: NaYF4:Yb/Er/Gd upconversion nanoparticles (UCNP) were synthesised and the photoemission stabilised by embedding them in electrospun fibers. The photophysical behaviour of chloro aluminium tetrasulfo phthalocyanine (ClAlTSPc) was studied in the presence of UCNPs when the two are mixed in solution. The fluorescence quantum yield value of ClAlTSPc decreased in the presence of UCNPs due to the heavy atom effect of UCNPs. This effect also resulted in increase in triplet quantum yields for ClAlTSPc in the presence of UCNPs. The fluorescence lifetimes for UCNPs were shortened at 658 nm in the presence of ClAlTSPc when the former was embedded in fiber and suspended in a dimethyl sulfoxide solution of the latter. Description: Using a methanol assisted thermal decomposition approach, sphere shaped NaYGdF4:Yb/Er upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) were successfully synthesized. The chemical, spectroscopic and fluorescence properties of the UCNPs were fully characterized. Characteristic upconversion fluorescence emissions were produced by the NPs in the green, red and NIR regions and the NPs were also shown to possess paramagnetic properties. The influence of the UCNPs on the spectroscopic and fluorescence properties of an aluminium octacarboxy phthalocyanine AlOCPc was investigated. Covalent conjugation to an AlOCPc resulted in a large blue shift of the phthalocyanine’s Q band, which was accompanied by a decrease in the Pc’s fluorescence lifetime in DMSO. By combining the phthalocyanine and upconversion nanoparticle, we present a system capable of multimodal imaging, using both the upconversion nanoparticle’s and phthalocyanine’s emission, and magnetic resonance imaging (as a result of doping the upconversion nanoparticles with Gd3+ ions). , Original publication is available at http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s10895-015-1539-8

Description: An estimated third of the 29 million tons of food produced annually in South Africa goes to waste (Oelofse, 2014). Fifty percent of this waste (by mass) occurs during the agricultural production and post-harvest handling and storage stages (von Bormann et al., 2017). At the same time 13 million South Africans routinely experience hunger, with malnutrition a serious concern for early childhood development (StatsSA, 2018). This disconnect between the need for food and the food that is available for consumption but being wasted, has profound social, environmental and economic impacts. This, in turn, suggests that there must be opportunities to create social, environmental and economic value through innovative and transformative initiatives that link food producers with food consumers in South Africa, particularly those in need. Food for Us is a sustainable food systems mobile phone learning pilot project initiated in 2017 by a consortium of partners in South Africa working with the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Lifestyles and Education Programme within the One Planet Network. The intention was to design and develop a mobile application (app) that could help reduce on-farm food surplus, while also supporting social learning. The initial phase of the project was 18 months. This publication shares what has been learned and can also be considered a springboard for the potential that is possible.
