Description: Caption "Common or Outeniqua Yellowwood, P. falcatus in garden of Prof. J. V. L. Rennie, 7 Oatlands Road, Grahamstown. May 1977. The stone wall hides the lower trunk but helps show size. Sapling was dug by the Rennies at Pirie Forest, King Williams Town, in 1945 when about 30cm high. Thus, in about 22 years in photo in 1977. The bole diameter at 1 metre from the ground was 304mm. Photo taken from the corner of Oatlands Road.”

Rennie, 1977.04.11, said that the tree had been planted by a Dr. Louw, local dentist who wanted a tree in front of his house. Rennie knew the tree to have been planted soon after he came to Grahamstown in 1931, say 1932-34. Thus in photo is about 43-45 years old. Tree might have bee topped by municipal workers at some time. Bole diameter at 1 metre to the ground = 406 mm on 10.05.1977.”

Planted in 1935, along with the Kaffirboom, Erythrina caffra, to the right by Mr C. Griffin Mullins, housemaster and later headmaster of the school, when his son R. Lorraine G. Mullins was born. An old friend, Mr F. H. Holland, brought Mr. Mullins a small yellowwood seedling so small that it fitted into a matchbox. The kaffirboom seedling was not much larger. Information from Mr. Griffin Mullins himself. The photo taken 1977, shows the trees after 42 years growth. The yellowwood's trunk one metre from the ground was 784 mm in diameter, the Kaffirboom's; 1, 219 mm.”

Garnet Tuberville, in photo, in 1956 when it was about 220 mm tall. Thus about 21 years in photo, 1977. Diameter of trunk 1 metre from ground - 51 mm with tree 2,1 m. tall. A second was planted by the Turbervilles at the same time on the east side of the house. In April 1977 this was 2,4 m. tall with a bold diameter of 52 mm. The saplings were brought from a small forest patch on Highlands farm at the back of Highlands mountain and next to Carl's Rust.”

Description: Caption: "Two of five magnificent Aloe Bainesii at entrance to Mr. Basil Gowie's property in Oatlands, Grahamstown, July 1977, the site of the old firm of W.C. Gowie & Sons, nurserymen & seedsmen."The scar at the base of the lefthand tree occurred in June 1977 when this whole section of the tree 'calved' from the main stem on its own. Two other large A.bainesii trees, almost as large grow to the left, out of the picture, and a fifth can be seen in the near distance behind the two figured. These pictures may prove to be significant in that trees of comparable size nearby in Oatlands are gradually collapsing as if having reached their limits."
