The company adopted a branding approach and used internal branding activities to implement a change intervention, which was unconventional and a unique approach, making it worthy of investigation. The primary aim of the study was, therefore, to analyse how a change in brand ideology (i.e. encompassing the business mission, vision, goals and shared values) shaped the senior leadership behaviour at KM and also led to the development of an improved performance management system. A case study research method was used. Data was collected through face-to-face and online interviews with the leadership team and combined with relevant company documents. A deductive thematic approach was used to analyse the data. The study revealed that brand ideology can impact leadership behaviour and performance if implemented deliberately. When the new CEO was appointed, his starting point was to change the KM brand ideology. The study revealed that, because of greater clarity in brand ideology, leadership behaviour improved. There were shifts in the manner in which leadership behaved and how they handled performance as a result of entrenching the new brand ideology. The study also revealed that the development of brand ideology necessitated changes in the performance management system. Brand-centred performance management systems contributed towards building a performance culture. In essence, developing a clear brand ideology was central to changing leadership behaviour and the revision of the performance management performance system. While limitations of the study are acknowledged, it has contributed by offering a unique perspective of an internal branding driven change and demonstrates how a change in brand ideology can impact leadership behaviour and performance management. The primary aim of this research is to explore how Chemin utilizes both tangible and intangible resources to support incubates throughout the incubation process. Through a meticulous examination of resource allocation strategies, this study seeks to uncover the impact of these resources on the success of incubated ventures. Adopting a qualitative research design, the study employed a single case study approach, which enabled the researcher to explore in depth the resource utilization and allocation processes at Chemin. The research was conducted within the interpretivist paradigm, focusing on understanding the experiences of incubates and the management team. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 15 participants, including five entrepreneurs who successfully completed the incubation process, five entrepreneurs currently undergoing incubation, and five members of the management team. Additionally, document analysis of official Chemin documents provided secondary data to supplement the primary data collected through interviews. The research objectives included analyzing the allocation of resources to meet enterprise development goals, exploring the role of resources in determining incubate success at different stages of incubation, and identifying instances where resource allocation posed challenges to incubate success. Thematic analysis was used to analyze the collected data, identifying key themes and patterns related to resource allocation and its impact on incubate success. The findings of this study shed light on the multifaceted nature of resource utilization within the business incubation context. Tangible resources, including physical assets and financial support, were found to be instrumental in providing startups with essential infrastructure and funding networks. Additionally, intangible resources such as mentorship, networking opportunities, and business advisory services emerged as critical factors in nurturing entrepreneurial talent and fostering innovation. Moreover, the study identified key areas where resource allocation strategies could be optimized to enhance incubate success. By addressing these challenges, business incubators like Chemin can further bolster their support for startups, contributing to economic development and entrepreneurial growth. Lastly, this research adds valuable insights to the field of business incubation, offering practical recommendations for enhancing the effectiveness of resource allocation strategies. - Description: This research study set out to analyse the barriers and drivers of small business survival in rural areas of Centane. Small and Medium sized Enterprises (SME’s) are considered a crucial element in achieving economic growth as well as job creation. These businesses play a pivotal role in the improvement of rural economy and livelihood and their existence is intricately linked to the survival of the local communities. Hence, the study seeks to analyse the barriers experienced by rural SME’s, resources and interventions required to be successful, was conducted in Centane, a rural town situated in Mnquma Local Municipality, Amathole District Municipality, Eastern Cape Province, The Resource based theory framework was employed to better understand the selected case study. A semi-structured questionnaire was developed in English then translated into isiXhosa the local vernacular to easy the information flow and ensures the respondent confidence during the face-to-face interview. The interviews were randomly conducted to fourteen (14) key informants (SME’s). The data was analysed using thematic analysis. Results indicated that the inadequate infrastructure, lack of skills and training as well as funding and support from the government are the key barriers experienced by the SME’s. Furthermore, results showed that critical skills such as business, records, financial management as well as marketing are required to ensure the sustainability of the SME’s in this area. Through the integration of Resource-Based-Framework, the study revealed the significance, and the availability of both the tangible and intangible resources in shaping the competitive-edge, survival and the sustainability of SME’s in Centane. The involvement of local government and other related development agencies is recommended to actively participate and play a more active role in ensuring the development, survival, sustainability and success of the SME’s in this area. - Description: The aim of the mini-thesis titled: “Sustainable Business Models and Organisational Resilience: A Case Study of Spier Wine Farm in South Africa” was to explore the relationship between sustainable business models and organisational resilience. Sustainability in wine makers extends beyond wine making techniques into other areas of the wine business to include hospitality, choice of glass and selecting suppliers of grapes. Spier Wine Farm, located outside the town of Stellenbosch in the Western Cape of South Africa, has been making wine since 1692. Spier has made a concerted effort in developing a sustainability strategy and introduction of sustainability into the business model. The South African wine industry is of importance to social and environmental sustainability in South Africa, creating over 270 000 jobs. Sustainability involves taking future generations into account when meeting the needs of the current generation, considering the triple bottom line of: environmental, social and economic value creation. The sustainable business model is thus an adaptation of a traditional business model to include creating and sustaining environmental and social value, in addition to traditional economic value. Resilience theory is centred around change in adaptive systems, focussing both on the role of change and the source of change. Making use of a deductive approach based on existing literature, a case study method allowed for an in-depth understanding of the relationship between sustainable business models and organisational resilience. Through semi-structured interviews and pattern matching data analysis, themes were identified. The research findings determined that a causal linkage between a sustainable business model and improved organisational resilience, in the South African context is likely to exist. The key themes that were considered to be contributing to this finding were: access to more sales markets, improved brand equity, reduced staff turnover and more efficient use of resources. An interdependence between sustainable business models and organisational resilience was found to likely not exist as a causal relationship between organisational resilience and sustainable business models was not found. The findings noted that sustainability was considered a contributing factor towards organisational resilience, but the relationship is not that of dependency as other ways to become resilient exist. - Description: Leaders have an impact on followers' ethical behaviour at lower levels by ingraining their standards and presumptions into the visible indicators of an ethical culture. Put differently, when a leader demonstrates ethical behaviour, it is reasonable to assume that followers will follow suit and create a shared understanding of what constitutes proper behaviour. This study investigates the relationship between ethical leadership and organisational culture, focusing on the mediating roles of organisational citizenship behaviour (OCB) and unethical pro-organisational behaviour (UPB) within the context of a financial services company in Africa. In this context, the research aims to address the significant gap in the literature. To this end, the literature review evidenced, amongst others, that no empirical study has been performed on how OCB and UPB mediate the relationship between ethical leadership and organisational culture. The study employs a quantitative research methodology, utilising a survey distributed electronically to a diverse sample of participants from a financial services company. To this end, the results of the research affirm that ethical leadership is positively and significantly related to organisational culture, where ethical leadership is posited to enhance organisational culture by fostering trust and collaboration among employees. Furthermore, OCB was found to mediate the relationship between ethical leadership and organisational culture. This indicates that promoting OCB is essential for fostering a favourable organisational culture. On the other hand, the study’s results show that UPB does not mediate the relationship between ethical leadership and organisational culture. - Description: Dynamic capability-enhancing technology, Subject Matter Experts (SMEs), System Experts (SEs) in planning and forecasting, and big data used for sensemaking combine to enable knowledge-based management decisions in interdisciplinary teams, increasing competitive advantage. This research extended Contingent Resource-based Theory CRBT by focusing on visualization’s role in this process. SMEs and SEs configure assumptions, with visualizations, in an interdisciplinary team to enable planning within the context of legal practice management systems. The study employed a mixed-method sequential explanatory design. An initial quantitative component determining which types of decision-making information technology contribute to the competitiveness of a firm was undertaken. Niche systems were found to increase technological dynamic capability through their highly configurable workflow tools, which provide customization capabilities and the ability to react to a changing environment quickly. Niche systems differentiated through process automation were found to be the aspect to focus on in a qualitative research study. A knowledge-sharing process model was developed from the literature, and this was overlayed with visualization as the new knowledge-sharing enabler. Then, a thematic qualitative study of interviews focusing on SMEs' and SEs' use of visualization in legal and financial system implementation was employed to establish the extent to which this process occurs in legal financial transformation projects. Seven subject matter experts and four system experts in legal transformation implementations were interviewed regarding using visualization to facilitate communication, verification, and process configuration during the knowledge-sharing process. The research illustrated how (1) low code systems data, (2) people, and (3) data enable the creation, sharing, and configuration of knowledge in practice in the legal practice management context. Recommendations for further research were made to automate refining budgeting and forecasting assumptions. This enables management to arrive at more accurate forecasts by refining assumptions and producing the resultant profit and loss reports visually in heat maps depicting variance between the forecast and actual profit and loss reports. The SMEs provide feedback, and the system cycles between multiple assumption iterations, reducing the variance and enhancing management decision-making. Visualization was found to assist the knowledge-sharing process through (1) verification, (2) process enablement, and (3) communication for decision-making. - Description: The manufacturing sector is a significant economic multiplier due to its strong connections to the economy's downstream and upstream output sectors. It supports the notion that manufacturing drives industrialisation and can serve as the primary engine for growth and employment creation. Despite its importance, the manufacturing sector has challenges associated with diminishing size and lack of competitiveness, especially in countries such as South Africa. These challenges are exacerbated by prevailing operational uncertainties that negatively impact manufacturing firms. Literature on operational uncertainty, fourth and fifth industrial revolution technologies and organisational learning show several interrelated theoretical and methodological gaps, highlighting three empirical and theoretical gaps as well as two methodological gaps. Six propositions were developed to investigate the research objectives. This was done using a multi-method quantitative design based on the post-positivist paradigm, with data collected from 22 experts (expert survey) and 262 firm representatives (firm survey). The results of the study confirmed that operational uncertainty is a multi-dimensional construct with a reflective model for dimensions and reflective-reflective for higher-order construct. This means that for the dimensions, the indicators can be added or excluded in the formation of the dimension. The same is also true for construct, operational uncertainty. The results of the present study also confirm that operational uncertainty is a norm in the manufacturing industry with a Manufacturing Operational Uncertainty Index (MOUI) = 0.752, indicating the range of futures. This posits that it is difficult to divide these futures into a discrete and exhaustive set of possibilities due to the complexity of conditions (variables) at play. Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technologies and their capabilities can manage the operational uncertainty dimensions with these technologies capable of scenario planning and supply chain integration (SPSI), flexible production and mass customisation (FPMC), real-time system and process monitoring and response (RPMR), root cause analysis and sustainable solutions (RCAS). These technologies are mainly artificial intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), big data analytics (BDA) and to a less extent advanced robotics (ARB), blockchain and augmented and virtual reality (ARVR). Organisation learning is also an effective causal condition to incorporate in managing operational uncertainty with Industry 4.0 and 5.0 technologies. The study has both theoretical and methodological contributions. In theory, it advanced the modified neo-configuration theory, while the methodology provided an Manufacturing Operational Uncertainty Index and integrated fsQCA with fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL), and structural equation modelling partial least square (PLS-SEM). This research study is important since the recognition and dissemination of subjects within the field of operations management hold great significance for firms, which is contingent upon their sector of operation. - Description: Women business leaders are generating a tremendous impact in their markets, industries and communities through innovation, job creation and economic growth. However, their contributions are often lost in the prevailing narrative that women are over-represented among the poorest and most vulnerable entrepreneurs globally. A review of the extant literature has postulated challenges that women entrepreneurs faced several challenges in the ecosystem in which it operates. Women entrepreneurs have access to limited capital as compared to its men counterparts, fewer opportunities to network and build relationships with other entrepreneurs, investors, and mentors, which affects their access to resources and knowledge. Due to the issue of gender-based stereotypes and biases that women entrepreneurs constantly face, they are unable to meet mentors who can provide them with guidance and support to grow their business. These women-specific challenges have become barriers limiting the growth of women entrepreneurs, however insufficient reports highlight how these hindering factors can create opportunities for the growth of women entrepreneurs. Dwelling on the Process theory, the study explored the impact of Ghana’s entrepreneurial ecosystem on women’s entrepreneurial performance with the moderating role of entrepreneurial identity. The study was a cross-sectional quantitative research design with data collected from 413 women entrepreneurs in the Greater Accra Region using structured questionnaire collected using the survey monkey online tool. The data was analyzed using IBM SPSS v.25 and the PLS-SEM v.4.0. The first objective was examined through 12 hypotheses, while the second was analyzed using 2.The study finds that access to finance has positive and insignificant effect on the entrepreneurial performance of women in Ghana. Likewise, education and training have a negative and insignificant effect on the market and operational performance of women entrepreneurs in Ghana. The results of the study postulated that the availability of infrastructure and resources has a negative but significant effect on both the market and operational performance of Ghanaian women entrepreneurs. The results of the study further reported a positive but insignificant impact of network and social capital on the market performance and operational performance of women entrepreneurs in Ghana. The results of the study in relations to the regulatory environment and women entrepreneurial performance indicates an insignificant relationship between regulatory environment and market performance and regulatory performance whilst cultural and social factors within the Ghanaian ecosystem negatively but significantly influence the entrepreneurial performance of women in Ghana but innovation and knowledge spillover have a positive and significant impact on both the market performance and operational performance. Furthermore, the findings of the study suggest that Ghana's entrepreneurial ecosystem may not have a substantial direct impact on women's entrepreneurial performance in Ghana. - Description: While there are natural changes in climate over time, the climate change phenomenon of global warming that the Earth is currently experiencing is human-induced. The impact of human-induced climate change has led to unprecedented global warming and has become evident as there have been increases in the frequency and intensity of extreme weather events such as inter alia, heatwaves, droughts and floods. This climate change trajectory poses a risk to the Earth’s ability to continue providing sustainable ecosystem services necessary to sustain life on Earth. Therefore, considering the risks and impacts of climate change, there is a need to strengthen the global response to the threat of climate change, and hence, there is a need for climate change adaptation (CCA). Some benefits of CCA include the reduction of risks to nature and people, biodiversity conservation, food security, livelihoods and human well-being. Through a CCA lens within the biodiversity and conservation sector, underpinned by Resilience Theory, this research study sets out to identify and evaluate the CCA plans of a provincial conservation authority. By reviewing the current literature for CCA, the insights gained allowed for the emergence of key characteristics for good CCA in the biodiversity and conservation sector, and the evaluation of CapeNature’s (a provincial conservation authority situated in the Westen Cape of South Africa) CCA plans against these key characteristics that emerged for CCA and resilience planning in protected areas and ecosystems. Qualitative data was gathered via focus groups and individual semi-structured interviews with seven key knowledge holders of CapeNature’s CCA planning processes, plans and management approaches, and through document analysis of the entity’s CCA plans, whereafter it was evaluated against the key characteristics. Challenges towards CCA and opportunities that can be explored for CCA were identified as well. This research study has revealed that CapeNature does not have a single all-encompassing CCA plan but has various CCA approaches that consider the key characteristics necessary for good CCA. However, the entity faces various challenges regarding its intention to implement these approaches over the long term. Challenges ranged from a fragmented approach to CCA to compromised capacity and capability to implement their CCA plans over time. A recurring challenge was the lack of financial resources, and this, combined with the entity’s current inability to secure sustainable financing, was emphasised as the key factor to be addressed towards facilitating the success of the entity’s CCA plans. It also emerged that CCA approaches are interdependent and linked as in various instances, when one key CCA characteristic was compromised, it had a detrimental effect on other CCA approaches. - Description: This study delves into the intricate factors contributing to the rising public debt in South Africa between 2009 and 2019, while also scrutinising the efficacy of public debt expenditure during this period. By examining data sourced from the SA National Treasury of South Africa and the South African Reserve Bank (SARB), the research endeavours to elucidate the underlying causes behind the burgeoning public debt and assess the impact of expenditure patterns on economic outcomes. The global financial crisis of 2008/2009 marked a pivotal juncture for South Africa's economy, precipitating a series of fiscal challenges that reverberated throughout the subsequent decade. Against this backdrop, this study embarks on a dual mission: firstly, to decipher the drivers underpinning the surge in public debt, and secondly, to gauge the efficacy of public expenditure vis-à-vis economic growth and development objectives. From 2009 to 2019, fiscal analysis shows a clear pattern of growing budget deficits, with government spending surpassing revenue growth. South Africa's fiscal policy has heavily favoured deficit spending, relying on debt to cover revenue shortfalls and maintain expenditure growth. Most government spending goes towards current payments and social transfers, leaving little for capital formation. Despite the National Development Plan's emphasis on investing in productive assets, both public and private sector investments have consistently fallen below targets, hindering significant contributions to economic growth. The rising public debt in South Africa stems from numerous factors, including excessive spending on unproductive areas like government compensation and social transfers, alongside high borrowing costs. This consumption-focused economic approach, coupled with insufficient investment in productive assets, has hindered South Africa's economic progress compared to global counterparts. - Description: Sustainability has become a major topic for businesses, policy makers, government, and researchers. With the growing awareness of climate change, environmental and social problems, attention has turned to how businesses impact the environment, society, and economy. Sustainability, therefore, requires the integration of environmental and social issues into strategic decision making. Many organizations consider sustainability as an important issue for the business. However, some companies are struggling to combine business success and the success of other stakeholders, particularly those representing the interests of the environment and society. The purpose of this case study is to explore how sustainability is integrated into strategic decision making within some companies in the South African automotive industry. This study followed a qualitative approach, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten senior managers in the automotive sector in South Africa. The study used an inductive thematic analysis approach to analyse the data, and five main themes were generated: (1) Business profitability, (2) Organization culture, (3) Rationality, (4) Compliance, and (5) Corporate social responsibility (CSR). The findings of the study indicated that strategic decisions made considered business profitability first and foremost above environment and society. There is evidence that businesses engage in some sustainability activities, but this was related to the business objective to be profitable and to meet compliance requirements. The findings of the study also indicated that a rational decision-making approach was used predominantly, compared to intuitive and political approaches. This was due to the cautious approach of maintaining profit-making as a primary business objective. In terms of recommendations, this study recommends that automotive companies in South Africa integrate sustainability considerations into organizational/or business strategy to enable the industry to create shared value for the environment, society and economy. - Description: The National Arts Festival (NAF), an annual event held in South Africa, faced a significant challenge in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The traditional in-person format of the festival was no longer feasible due to government restrictions. In response, the NAF's CEO, Monica Newton, led her team in a rapid transition to a virtual platform. This decision-making process and the creation of the first virtual NAF (vNAF) occurred within a remarkably short period of 100 days. This teaching case study delves into the academic framework of crisis management, stakeholder theory, strategic thinking, strategic management, and business models, examining their application in the context of the NAF's transformation. To understand the decision-making process and challenges faced by the NAF, a qualitative research design was employed. Data collection involved two face-to-face interviews with Monica Newton, CEO of the NAF, and secondary sources. The teaching case is accompanied by a comprehensive note for educators, offering guidance on its classroom use. The note includes a case synopsis, intended audience, suggested learning outcomes, theoretical connections, teaching strategies, potential discussion questions, evaluation methods, and additional resources. - Description: The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa mandates municipalities to provide sustainable services to communities, particularly those responsible for water and sanitation. Despite this obligation, many communities in the Oliver Reginald Tambo District Municipality (ORTDM) face prolonged water interruptions due to challenges with infrastructure. This study has assessed the ORTDM’s efforts to integrate sustainability principles into its water supply distribution systems development programmes. Essentially, it aimed to evaluate whether and how ORTDM integrates social, environmental, economic, engineering, and project management sustainability principles into its developmental initiatives. Grounded in the backdrop of global sustainable development imperatives, particularly the Triple Bottom Line (TBL) concept, the research explored challenges and considerations within local government in pursuit of sustainability in water infrastructure development. Utilising a qualitative research approach within a post-positivism paradigm, the study employed semi-structured interviews and document analysis as primary data collection methods, emphasising triangulation for research validity and ethical considerations throughout the study. Although the initially planned sample size was 12 participants, the study successfully interviewed seven municipal officials from ORTDM’s water and sanitation services delivery department, achieving a participation rate of 58%, which aligns with qualitative research standards. Findings from document analysis and interviews were categorised based on identified sustainability principles, highlighting strategies adopted and challenges encountered by ORTDM, including opportunities available for ORTDM. The study reveals that while ORTDM has made efforts to integrate sustainability principles, numerous challenges, including financial and natural resource constraints, organisational capacity limitations, inadequate infrastructure planning and maintenance, and socio-economic challenges, have hindered desired outcomes. Additionally, issues like vandalism, theft, biodiversity loss, and fragmented water conservation strategies exacerbate sustainability integration challenges. To address these barriers, the study recommends prioritising management approaches to enhance sustainability integration in ORTDM’s water services. Drawing on resilience theory, the study further proposes integrating resilience principles into planning, design, and management processes to improve organisational and system resilience, thus ensuring reliable and sustainable water services. - Description: Water scarcity is a pressing global issue exacerbated by factors such as population growth, urbanisation, and climate change. This challenge is particularly acute in water-stressed regions where a substantial portion of the world's population resides. Desalination, particularly through reverse osmosis (RO), has emerged as a viable solution to address this demand, providing a stable and high-quality water supply without overburdening natural freshwater ecosystems. This research focuses on the sustainability impacts and opportunities of RO desalination plants, specifically examining the Cerebos SA plant in Gqeberha and the Amatola Water plant at Bushman's River, to provide insights into their environmental, social, economic, and governance impacts and opportunities from a life cycle perspective. In addition to investigate the key sustainability considerations relevant to RO desalination plants to potentially augment available water provision sources in the Eastern Cape. Ten participants were purposively sampled from Ndlambe Municipality, Cerebos S.A, and Amatola Water. Semi-structured interviews and document analysis were used to collect data. The research design was grounded in the post-positivism paradigm, emphasising the incorporation of diverse perspectives and the search for valid and reliable evidence within existing phenomena. Three strategies were used to ensure credibility data for this study, these were triangulation, diverse participant selection, and audio interview transcription using Otter.ai. The results from the research offered valuable insights into the sustainability impacts and opportunities of the RO desalination plants from the Life Cycle perspective, although the respondents demonstrated a clear understanding of sustainability, the concept of QBL was less familiar to many. Furthermore, the respondents unpacked QBL impacts and opportunities from a life cycle perspective and augmentation consideration for RO desalination plants. Key recommendations included conducting thorough environmental impact assessments, transitioning to renewable energy sources, energy recovery systems, inventory management, and enhancing community engagement and workforce training. Evaluating perceptions of co-management on small-scale fisheries in the Wild Coast of South Africa

- Description: Shared perceptions by stakeholders can improve the understanding of managing natural resources. This study aimed to evaluate stakeholders’ perceptions towards co-management of small-scale fisheries to improve the management of these resources. Eleven participants were purposively sampled from government agencies, non-profit organisations and community representatives from Coffee Bay, Port St Johns, Lusikisiki and Xolobeni on the Wild Coast of South Africa. Predetermined themes derived from the literature were used to develop the interview schedule. Semi-structured, one-on-one interviews were conducted to probe the participants’ understanding of the term “co-management” and its objectives, benefits, processes, and outcomes. Data were recorded and transcribed into text, and thematic analysis was used to detect themes that emerged from the data. The results indicated that all participants perceived co-management of Small-scale fisheries as beneficial. Securing access rights through fishing permits was a benefit that was exclusive to the fishers, whereas self-regulation, sharing of information, and mobilising and utilising the strengths of different stakeholders were the benefits noted by all stakeholder participants. Government representatives viewed the involvement of government in the co-management structures of SSF as necessary, whereas the other representatives’ views were that government should be excluded. Incorporating the traditional and government regulatory systems was recommended to manage fisheries resources effectively. - Description: Climate change and resource scarcity have become some of the world's most critical problems and are among the most significant megatrends influencing world leaders' agendas in decision- making (Rothkopf & Casey, 2014; International Social Security Association, 2014). Sustainable procurement has been identified as one of the strategic tools that can resolve these issues to help the world move towards a more sustainable and resilient future (World Bank, 2019). Through sustainable procurement practices, organisations can meet their demand and supply of goods and services while minimising environmental harm, maximising financial returns, and enhancing socioeconomic status (Villena & Gioa, 2020; Bonnemaison, Eldandsson, Ibach & Spiller, 2021). This qualitative research used an Eastern Cape-based higher education institution in South Africa as a case study to investigate factors that influence adopting and implementing sustainable procurement, with resilience as a theoretical foundation, in higher education. The research obtained approval from the participating university as a gatekeeper for the study; it began by drafting a research proposal and securing ethical clearance from Rhodes University. Semi-structured interviews were used with seven higher education procurement staff members to get the data working in procurement in higher education. The findings from the study revealed that managerial support and knowledge of sustainable procurement were determining factors for whether or not a university developed and implemented a strategy for sustainable procurement.Secondly, the participants mostly cited barriers as inadequate financial resources resulting in limitations for the university, therefore partially implementing sustainable practices. - Description: This research study aimed to improve the alumni awareness of FGS at Sol Plaatje University in order to enjoy a lifelong connection with their alma mater. Furthermore, this study provides recommendations to Sol Plaatje University on how engage first-generation students (FGS) and alumni more effectively in the future. This study used a mixed-method research design to collect and analyse data. The first phase of data collection used a quantitative research method in the form of a survey to obtain biographical information about the final-year students and to identify FGS as key participants for this study. The second data collection phase employed qualitative research to gain insight into alumni awareness among FGS through an alumni awareness workshop and a follow-up questionnaire. The survey findings revealed that students needed to be informed about alumni and related activities on campus. In addition, all were eager to attend the alumni workshop in the second phase of the study. The study findings revealed that FGS showed improved knowledge of alumni and related activities after attending the alumni awareness workshop. They also indicated their willingness to attend university alumni events such as reunions, homecoming, and fundraising events after graduation. Recommendations include suggestions for Sol Plaatje University to identify FGS at registration and tailor its extracurricular and support programmes to cater for such students. The university should also introduce alumni awareness workshops to prepare students for life after graduation as alumni and for the world of work. - Description: This research investigation is based on continuous improvement changes arising from - and related to - ISO 9001 implementation at Sundays River Citrus Company (SRCC), which is one of the biggest packers, marketers, and exporters of citrus fruit in South Africa. The Board of SRCC adopted ISO 9001 to ensure organizational efficiency and sustainability while improving quality control, customer service, teamwork and leadership. However, research indicates not all organizations that have Implemented ISO 9001 realize the intended benefits. While no research was available on the citrus agriculture industry, research in the tourism industry indicates that not only did some companies not realize the expected benefits, but also incurred substantial investment costs. It is estimated that approximately thirty to ninety percent of change initiatives fail to meet their objectives, and research studies also indicate that middle managers play a critical role that can influence the outcomes of a change project. However, Balogun (2003) indicates that middle managers play a complex role and are exposed to role conflict, which can influence the outcomes of change initiatives. In this context, this research study aimed to investigate the role conflicts experienced by middle managers during the process of an ISO 9001 continuous improvement change. The study draws on role theory, applying it to their management of change. The following role conflict types were investigated: (1) intra-sender conflict, (2) inter-sender role conflict, (3) inter-role conflict, (4) role ambiguity and (5) role strain. The research approach is qualitative, and has adopted a post-positivist paradigm, utilizing a deductive qualitative method. The study adopted a case study approach. Data was gathered mainly from interviews and supported by organizational documents. Semi structured interviews were conducted with questions formulated through the use of the coding manual (See Appendix C) to ensure alignment of data collection with the research propositions derived from literature. A deductive thematic analysis method was used to analyze the interview data. The research findings confirmed that during continuous improvement change, as middle managers strived to satisfy the incompatible expectations of role senders (mainly senior and junior managers), they experienced the five role conflict types. The study findings also indicate that middle managers experience conflicts due to the incompatible expectations of other role senders such as quality and marketing departments. The findings suggest that middle managers are managing these conflicts, but notes that they do require some assistance and support from senior management.
