- Description: This thesis describes observations of the flne structure in Jovian decametric radiation made at Grahamstown during the 1967-68 apparition. It was found that pulses with duration less than 0.5 milliseconds were common during fine structure storms. The restrictions placed on the source for different theories of origin of the short pulses are discussed. The variation of the probability of occurrence from year to year is analysed on the assumption that the radiation is found in directions fixed with respect to the planet's magnetic field. It is concluded that there is a factor other than the declination of Earth and the Io effect which controls the probability of occurrence. A detailed analysis suggests a beam width of 3° in latitude at Jupiter but further work is necessary to check this.

- Description: The behaviour of very low frequency (V.L.F.) radio waves propagating in an ionlzed medium, such as the ionosphere and exosphere, may exhibit markedly different characteristics from those of frequencies such as are used for communication in the short-wave bands. The anisotropy introduced into the medium by the presence of the earth's magnetic field has a significant effect, while at frequencies below about 5KHz the presence of heavy positive ions may further affect propagation. In particular it is found that, under suitable conditions, V.L.F. signals may propagate along paths closely following the lines of force of the earth's magnetic field. The study of such signals has a practical interest in that, from consideration of their propagation times and dispersion properties, they can provide an inexpensive method of determining electron densities at well beyond the range of satellite investigation. For this reason, if for no other, theoretical investigation of the paths traced in a model exosphere may indicate how closely the model exosphere approximates the true one. A powerful method of tracing out these paths is by the use of "ray-tracing", provided the properties of the medium vary slowly in space, a condition not always fulfilled in practice. It has been the subject of this thesis to carry out ray-tracing studies, in particular noting the effects of the positive ions in the exosphere; effects which have not received much notice before as they were thought to be unimportant. - Description: Fibres used in textiles can be classified broadly into natural fibres and synthetic fibres. Natural fibres can be either animal, such as wool, mohair and camel hair, or vegetable such as cotton, flax and hemp. In the development of synthetic fibres numerous polymers have emerged which have no real natural counterpart and are unique in their mechanical and chemical behaviour. Often the synthetic counterpart of a natural fibre has properties with certain advantages from the textile point of view, but, simultaneously, may exhibit other properties which have disadvantages. Nylon 6 and nylon 6-6, for exemple, are extremely strong and generally easier to dye than animal fibres. On the other hand, they absorb relatively little water vapour and therefore do not give the buffering action characteristic of hygroscopic fibres, once they are woven or knitted into cloth. All textile fibres belong to the chemical class of polymers, i.e. they are made up of repeating molecular units which are linked together to form long chains. In wool the chains are made up of amino-acids which cluster together to form protein chains. Three of these protein chains, coil around each other to form what is termed a proto-fibril. The proto-fibrils make up the micro-fibrils, each of these consisting of eleven of the three chain proto-fibrils. The micro-fibrils, in turn, pack together in bundles which run parallel to the length of the wool fibre and are termed macro-fibrils. Sulphur rich amino-acids fill up the spaces between the micro-fibrils forming a matrix which binds the system into a continuous material. Intro., p. 1.

- Description: This thesis describes the investigation carried out on the propagation of radio pulses of frequency 4.73 Mc/s between Grahamstown and Durban. The thesis is divided into two sections - A and B. Section A consists of two chapters. The introductory chapter gives a brief account of how the existence of the ionosphere came to be known. Then follows a description of the different layers of ionization and a review of the theories that have been propounded on the formation of these layers. Chapter 2 deals with the apparatus which includes the transmitter in Grahamstown and the receiving apparatus in Durban. The receiving apparatus comprises: i) a superheterodyne receiver whose gain was high (between 130 and 140 dbs); (ii) a time delay calibrator which could measure time differences of 100 μsec fairly accurately; (iii) a 310 A Tektronix oscilloscope; (iv) a continuously running 35 mm recording camera. Section B is made up of three chapters and is concerned with the actual analysis of the data recorded. The theory of propagation of radio waves in the ionosphere is discussed in Chapter 3. The effects of the magnetic field are neglected since it is found that the error introduced would not make the results unacceptable. Chapter 4 contains the analysis of the data recorded. One summer day and one winter day are discussed in detail in order to obtain the pattern of the diurnal variations for both summer and winter. Some interesting phenomena are also dealt with. An attempt to do ray tracing was successful and the paths followed by a Pedersen and a lower ray from Grahamstown to Durban have been drawn. New topics for further research are discussed in Chapter 5. There are two appendices. Appendix I gives the time delays of all the pulses recorded and their possible identifications. An overall picture of the propagation via the various layers throughout the day (both for summer and for winter is presented in Appendix II.

- Description: From introduction: Jupiter is the largest planet in the solar system. Its distance from the Sun is five times that of the Earth and its mass is nearly two and a half times that of all the other planets added together. Jupiter turns about its own axis rather rapidly, once in just under ten hours, and it completes one revolution about the Sun in just under twelve years. Thus Earth has to pass almost directly between the Sun and Jupiter once every thirteen months. When this happens Jupiter is said to be in "opposition", as its position is then opposite to that of the Sun, when viewed from Earth. Around this time the planet will be most favourably placed for observations, as it is at its closest to Earth and up in the sky for a large part of the night. During the day observations on radio frequencies are more difficult, as the Sun is a source of great interference. Besides being an emitter of thermal electromagnetic radiation, as one would expect, Jupiter also emits two kinds of non-thermal radiation, one in the decimetre wavelength range and the other in the decametre wavelength range. A large number of scientists have worked on the problems of decimetre and decametre radiation. This thesis deals with some aspects of decametre radiation.

- Description: From Introduction: The minimum in the scalar magnitude of the geographic total field, which lies off the coast of Brazil, allows the mirror points of trapped particles to dip low into the atmosphere over the South Atlantic Ocean, resulting in two regions of maximum intensity of preciptated particles in that region, one from the inner belt and one from the outer. High charged particle fluxes have been observed at low altitudes over these regions by satellites Sputnik 5 and 6 (Ginsburg et al, 1961) and Discoverer 31 (Seward and Kornblum, 1963) amongst others. The more southerly of these two regions acts as a sink for electrons from the outer radiation belt and will be referred to in what follows as the Southern Radiation Anomaly. Gladhill and van Rooyen (1963) predicted that the energy deposited in the upper atmosphere by these charged particles would be sufficient to give rise to enhanced geophysical effects such as auroral emission, X-rays and ionization and heating of the upper atmosphere in this region. Although some of these effects have been correlated with precipitated electrons, no definite relation had until now been established between ionospheric effects and precipitated particles. The aim of this thesis was to investigate such a relationship and the results were extremely successful. It will be shown conclusively in what follows, that the precipitation of electrons can account for the ionospheric disturbances defined by a disturbance criterion at all stations around L=4. Part I describes the exploration of the radiation belts and the magnetosphere with rockets and satellites. The resulting theoretical models based on the observations are discussed. A brief review is given of the work that has been done to date to derive equations for the loss and replenishment of particles in the belts. Because of the complexity of these and the number of doubtful factors involved, a simple model of injection of electrons into the outer belt is devised, giving average values of trapped and precipitated electron fluxes at any point around L=4. In Part II, this model is employed together with the disturbance criterion of Gledhill and Torr (1965) to examine the relationship between ionospheric disturbances and electron fluxes. Also the energy range of the precipitated particles is examined.

In the course of routine vertical incidence soundings, it was noticed with some surprise that the frequency of occurrence of ionospheric blackouts was unexpectedly high. Initially this aroused considerable concern about the reliability of the equipment. In fact it has been · observed that some stations lying in and near the Southern Radiation Anomaly report such occasions as records lost due to non-ionospheric reasons. Coincidently, however, Gledhill and van Rooyen (1963), also of Rhodes University, predicted ionospheric irregularities and other geophysical phenomena in a region around Sanae where Ginsburg et al. (1962) observed high intensities of charged particles with Sputniks 5 and 6.

- Description: From introduction: The Fluorescence Excitation Spectrum or anthracene is known to vary considerably with the age and condition or the crystal. This thesis represents an attempt to improve the understanding of these variations. To put the problem on a quantitative basis it was found necessary to know both the ultraviolet reflection and absorption spectra. Reports of the reflection spectrum appear to have been confined to the case of polarised incident light. In addition the reflectivity measurements are always reported for a freshly cleaved surface. For these reasons the reflectivity of anthracene for various conditions of the reflecting surface was measured with unpolarised light. These varying reflectivities were used to further knowledge of the chemical processes at the crystal surface, as well as being used directly in the calculation of fluorescence excitation spectra. Reflection spectra with a- and b- crystallographic axis polarisations were also obtained. Since such spectra are reported in the literature it was possible, by comparison, to conclude that the experimental methods used in this thesis yielded valid results. The polarised measurements were used to obtain optical constants for the crystal. In the interests of readability most of the complicated process of converting the reflectivities to optical constants is dealt with in three appendices to the thesis.

- Description: Part I. (1) An elementary treatment of the motion of charged particles in a magnetic field is presented. The concept of guiding centre motion is introduced, and is used in outlining the theory of particle drifts. (2 ) The motion of charged particles in the geomagnetic field is discussed, and the concept of adiabatic invariance introduced. (3) Mc Iliwains coordinates for mapping the distribution of charged particles trapped in the geometric field are defined and briefly discussed. (4) A survey of present knowledge of the Van Allen radiation zones is made. Particular attention is given to the distribution, characteristics, and variability of the trapped radiation. (5) The Cape Town magnetic anomaly, the Brazil radiation anomaly and the South Atlantic radiation anomaly are discussed. The electrons entering the South Atlantic radiation anomaly are shown to be those monitored over Iowa by the US satellite Injun I. Part 11. (1) It is shown how the geomagnetic field can, at high altitudes and over relatively short distances, be approximated by the field of a monopole. A new method is developed which enables one to plot the energy absorbed from an electron (which moves in a monopole field in the atmosphere) against altitude, given the initial energy and pitch angle of the electron. Some numerical computations using this method are described, and the results discussed. These results are used, in conjunction with US satellite Injun I for the Iowa region, to estimate the energy inout to the atmosphere in the South Atlantic radiation anomaly. The main approximations and simplifying assumptions made in this treatment, are discussed. (2) Geophysical effects generally recognized to be connected with the precipitation of charged particles are discussed. In the course of this discussion the two main theories of the connection between the radiation zones and the auroras are examined. (3) A preliminary discussion, based on the work summarized in point (1) of detectable geophysical events associated with the precipitation of electrons into the South Atlantic radiation anomaly is given. It is concluded that auroral emission, X-ray bursts, and ionospheric ionization in the E region should be more frequent and pronounced in the South Atlantic radiation anomaly than in any other region of comparable invariant latitudes and that the effects of atmospheric heating by precipitated electrons should be detectable over the anomaly. (4) An assessment is made of the value of the method referred to in point (1). Suggestions for its modification and extension are put forward. It is suggested that if more extensive rocket and satellite data on the low energy component of the electron flux become available, this method can be employed in a rigorous theoretical investigation of the South Atlantic radiation anomaly. - Description: This thesis describes the investigation carried out of the radio noise emitted by the planet Jupiter on 18 Mc/s and 22 Mc/s. Chapter I gives a brief introduction and outlines radioastronomical as well as astronomical ideas concerning Jupiter. A detailed survey of the research done to date including some of the hypotheses formulated by previous workers is presented in Chapter II . Chapter III deals with the apparatus used in this research. Two similar sets of apparatus were used. The aerials were folded dipoles. The signals were fed to the receiver, an R 206 , via a 300 ohm impedance line. To increase the gain an extra I -F. stage was included. This gave a gain of better than a 120 dB. To match the signals into the recorder a cathode follower was used. The operating procedure appears in the fourth chapter. The results obtained are discussed and tabulated at the end of the chapter. They agree with the findings made by previous workers, within the experimental limit. Histograms of the occurrence probability versus the revised System III coordinates are presented for each frequency and compared to previous ones. The final chapter contains the author ' s interpretation of the observed effects. A model based on a radiation analogous to the Cerenkov effect is found to be not inconsistent with the available data . Ending the chapter suggestions for further research are made.

- Description: The present work was initially aimed at providing an explanation for some of the phenomena that occur in the ionosphere at sunrise. The approach that was taken was to determine the changes that take place on a theoretical model of the ionosphere and then to compare these with observations. A prerequisite for this approach was a theoretical model that would show, among other things, a bifurcation of the F layer during daytime without making unjustified arbitrary assumptions. The absence of such a model, particularly as far as non-equilibrium conditions are concerned, resulted in the present attempt to provide such a model for the F1 region.

- Description: Summary: A recording spectrometer for the measurement of fluorescence excitation spectra in the visible and ultra-violet regions of the spectrum is described. A direct method of modulating the hydrogen light source of the spectrograph is presented, whereby the discharge is driven by an A.C. power oscillator. The use of tuned amplifiers in the detecting unit is investigated as a means of eliminating the D.C. component of the dark current. Aspects of the modulation method are discussed. Fluorescence and energy transfer in aromatic hydrocarbon is discussed with particular regard to anthracene. Some absorption, fluorescence, excitation and reflection spectra of anthracene obtained by previous workers are presented9 together with Tables listing the wavelengths of principal maxima for the above spectra published in the literature. Features of the excitation spectrum of anthracene are discussed and are related to its absorption and fluorescence spectra. The role of surface effects, defects and impurities are discussed in relation to the fluorescence of anthracene. The method of A.C. detection was unable to resolve the excitation spectrum of anthracene due to the high noise level associated with the method. However, peaks in the ultra-violet region of the hydrogen molecular spectrum were recorded at a modulation frequency of 400 Kc/sec. The noise level is explained and ways of improving the signal to noise ratio of the A.C. detection system are suggested. It is concluded that D.C. detection is a simpler and more direct way of measuring excitation spectra. No modulated signals were detected when the hydrogen discharge was excited at 6·5 Mc/sec. Signals were recorded at modulation frequencies of 400 Kc/sec . The degree of modulation at 400 Kc/sec. increased with decrease in the pressure of the hydrogen discharge.

A theoretical investigation of the effects of solar eclipses on the ionosphere

- Description: The behaviour of the ionosphere during a solar eclipse is of great interest because radiation from the sun is the cause of ionization in the upper atmosphere and it is useful to be able to conduct experiments where this radiation is cut off and restored in a known manner. Experimental results, especially those dealing with the F2 layer, have proved puzzling. Cusps which cannot be explained appear on the records obtained from ionosphere sounders and in the F2 region the electron density at a given height shows a maximum after the eclipse where one would expect it simply to rise to a steady value. An attempt is made in this thesis to explain some of the anomalies in terms of tilts in the ionospheric layers and minima of electron density or "valleys" between the ionospheric layers. The problem is attacked theoretically. Part I deals with the theoretical background to ionospheric physics in general and to this problem in particular. Standard methods of dealing with radio propagation in the ionosphere as well as some methods developed by the author are discussed. Part II deals directly with the effects of a solar eclipse on a theoretical ionosphere. Ionograms which would be obtained in the theoretical ionosphere are constructed. These are scaled by standard methods to show where errors may arise . It appears that tilts in the layers have only a small effect. The effect of the valley is, however, extremely important, giving rise to the apparent maximum of electron density in the F2 layer at a given height after the eclipse. This maximum does not in fact exist but arises from an error in the scaling method which ignores the possibility of a valley. Some records taken during the solar eclipse of 25 December, 1954 have been scaled. They support the conclusion reached theoretically.

- Description: The work of previous writers on the origin and propagation of solar radio noise, and particularly the correlation with visual events is reviewed, and then the construction of the author's 300 Mc/s receiver described. With a view to the author's project, absorption of electromagnetic radiation in the solar corona is quantitatively discussed, and a method for determining the intensity without absorption of a radio burst is evolved. The main project involves briefly the discovery of any possible relationship between the magnitude of a visual flare and the corrected intensity of an associated radio burst as measured at 125 Mc/s. It is concluded that no definite relation exists, but from this consideration an approximate shape of the instantaneous frequency profile of outburst elements is obtained. An extension of the theory to isolated bursts enables us to predict both this bandshape, and the velocity of an exciting agency moving radially through the corona.

Construction of a wide-frequency range double heterodyne conductance bridge and its use in the investigation of polarisation errors in conductance measurements

- Description: (1) Developments in a.c. conductance techniques during the past ninety years have been reviewed, and a brief outline is given of the older theories regarding electrolytic polarisation. (2) A conductance bridge - incorporating the double heterodyne principle - has been constructed, capable of giving resistance readings to an accuracy of 0.01% over a range of frequencies covering the best part of 100 kc/s. It has also been found possible to calibrate the oscillator so that frequency settings can be guaranteed to an accuracy of , at least, 0.1% in the range: 2 kc/S to 50 kc/S. (3) The Wheatstone Bridge Network has been slightly modified to enable measurements at the high frequencies. (4) Resistances in the measuring arm of the bridge have been calibrated 'in situ' by the method of intercomparison. (5) A brief description is given of the modern theories regarding electrode processes and modern methods of eliminating electrode effects. (6) Two types of conductance cells, with bright Pt electrodes, have been used to carry out measurements on potassium chloride solutions: (a) Thomas- Gledhill Cell (b) Nichol-Fuoss Cell. The latter incorporates concentric, cylindrical electrodes with the lead to the outer electrode acting as an electrical shield for the lead to the inner electrode. This cell was constructed and used for the first time in this laboratory. (7) From resistance-frequency graphs plotted, it is shown that the Jones and Christian extrapolation procedure cannot be applied (with any degree of confidence) to obtain the true resistance, when measurements are effected over an extended range of frequencies. (8) The method of resistance-reactance diagrams is discussed and applied to various networks of resistances and capacitances. (9) By drawing resistance-reactance diagrams for the experimental readings obtained, equivalent circuits have been derived - for all the solutions investigated in the N-F cell, and for the approx. O.OlD solution in the T-G cell - which approximate to cell behaviour in the range: 500 c/s to 75 kc/s. The less concentrated solutions in the T-G cell show peculiar behaviour at the high frequencies. - Description: [Summary] Chapter I . The general characteristics of solar radiation at metre wavelengths are described, with reference to data published in the literature. A brief description of some aspects of solar physics relevant to the study of solar noise is given, and the literature relating to the correlation of radio effects with solar disturbances is reviewed. Chapter II. A concise description of the apparatus constructed for the continuous recording of the flux density of solar radio noise at a frequency of 300 Mc/s is given, with some mention of difficulties experienced, and how these were overcome. Full circuit diagrams of electronic apparatus, and illustrative photographs, are supplied. Chapter III. The development of theories of the origin and propagation of solar noise radiation is historically reviewed and the success of each theory in explaining or predicting observed phenomena, is assessed. A working model is chosen from among these theories, and reasons for its adoption are given. Chapter IV. Observations made by the author of solar radiation at a frequency of 300 Mc/s are described, together with a description of the objects and methods, of analysis of the records. Chapter V. Phenomena observed by the author are compared with those observed by other workers. It is concluded that storm bursts are caused by transients similar to those producing Type II and Type ITI bursts, and a model for the production of storm bursts is tentatively suggested. Chapter VI. Suggestions for further research, including suggestions for methods of testing the author's conclusions, are made.

- Description: Since the Kennelly- Heaviside hypothesis in 1902 of the existence of a partially conducting layer in the upper atmosphere was proved to be true by the experiments of APPLETON and BARNETT (1925) and BREIT and TUVE (1926), this region has become known as the ionosphere. The ionosphere was soon discovered to consist of, not one but several layers (Fig. 1) (i) A layer at a height of just over 100 km. called the E layer. (ii) A layer at a height of approximately 300km. called the F₂ layer. (iii) A layer at a height of approximately 200 km. called the F₁ layer; this layer differs from the other two in that it is only present during the day time in Summer. (iv) Occasional intense reflections from a height of about 100 km. are found - these cannot be attributed to the normal E layer and have received the name "Sporadic E". The presence of two E layers (E₁ and E₂) has been suggested by HALLIDAY (1936) and BEST and RATCLIFFE (l978) but until recently most workers still seem to attribute these reflections to Sporadic E. Recent measurement by rockets of the electron density at E layer heights still do not confirm whether such bifurcation exists in the E region. The diurnal and seasonal variations of the first three layers indicate that the sun is the chief agent in their production. It is generally agreed that these layers consist of ionised molecules or atoms and free electrons produced by radiation from the sun. The origin of Sporadic E ionisation is still obscure, but it is thought that these sudden increases in ionisation which occur in E layer heights are due to passing meteors. Recently it has also been suggested by SEDDON, PICKAR and JACKSON (1954) from rocket measurements that Sporadic E might be due to a steep electron density gradient above the B layer.

An investigation of isolated bursts of solar radio noise

- Description: The literature on isolated bursts and possible mechanisms of origin has been critically reviewed, and observations point to a mechanism involving omission of electromagnetc radiation from plasma oscillations in the solar corona excited by outward travelling disturbances. Solar noise observations on 125 Mc./s. recorded at Rhodes University during the period November 26 1957 - February 6 1958 have been analysed by the author for isolated bursts, and these observations show the same general features reported by previous investigators. In interpretation of these records particular attention has been devoted to two aspects of isolated bursts; namely the preponderance on single frequency records of double-humped bursts, and the shape of isolated burst profiles. The authors suggests that a probable explanation of double-humped bursts observed on any frequency f is that the first hump represents omission at or near the level of zero refractive index for f radiation, and that the second hump corresponds to harmonic omission at the f/2 level. Source velocities may be calculated from the time delay between the peaks and an average value of 2 x 10⁴ km./sec. was obtained from an analysis of 21 double-humped bursts. This value is in very good agreement with that deduced by Wild (1950b) from the rate of frequency drift of peak intensity of isolated bursts. Simple isolated bursts had decay profiles which are approximatley exponential in shape, and this is usually interpreted in terms of the natural decay of plasma oscillations in the medium of origin. The author has verified that the exponential function is a good fit to the observed decay profiles, but shows that a relation of the form I - ¹/n (superscript) ⋉ t (where I is intensity and t is time) fits just as well. An alternative model is suggested which would lead to an exponential-like decay profile which is not determined by the natural decay of plasma oscillations. The work concludes with some suggestions for further research.
