- Description: The purpose of this study is to look at instilling discipline of learners at schools after corporal punishment was abolished by identifying causes of disciplinary problems, alternatives to corporal punishment, and the attitudes of learners, teachers and parents towards alternatives. Data were collected through questionnaires, interviews and observation. Data were collected from learners, teachers and parents. Two neighbouring schools in the Mthatha District of Education were used. A qualitative research approach was used in the study. Findings reveal and support literature consulted that there is a wide range of causes of disciplinary problems at schools. According to the findings, the outstanding difference between respondents on causes of disciplinary problems was on home background. Learners are not in agreement with literature, teachers and parents who all agree that background is the cause of misbehaving of learners at school. The study reveals that learners, teachers and parents hold different views about alternatives to corporal punishment. While teachers, parents and literature are in agreement on using parental involvement as an alternative to caning, learners do not want parents to be involved. Teachers, the findings reveal, are not in favour of alternatives that need to be supervised by them. The final outcome of this study focuses on positive alternatives to corporal punishment. These include parental involvement, manual work, the application of school rules and enforcement of the code of conduct. Learners would also like to be disciplined and parents are in favour of being involved in the maintenance of discipline in schools.

- Description: This study focuses on the concept or phenomenon of nihilism, given the regularity with which it manifests itself (to anyone who is aware of it in more or less theoretical or philosophical terms) in all kinds of cultural artifacts such as films, television shows or series, books such as novels or philosophical texts, and magazines. Most of these artifacts can be grouped together under the heading of the media in the present era. The objective of the study is to use the concept of nihilism to identify and analyse selected cases in contemporary media -- in the form of films and television series – to answer the question, with what kinds of nihilism people would come face to face if they knew how to recognize them. The study begins with an outline of a theoretical framework concerning the concept of nihilism. A number of thinkers’ work is used to come to grips with the complex phenomenon, but mostly it is Nietzsche whose thought seems to be valuable for present purposes. In the second chapter the spotlight falls on what is called (in this study) ‘capitalist nihilism’, which seems to belong with what Nietzsche called ‘passive nihilism’, but also seems to exhibit some aspects of ‘active nihilism’. The third chapter is an examination of nihilism in a foreign (Japanese) culture by concentrating on Japanese anime, to test the differences between Western (historically Christian) culture and one with a different cultural and religious history. The last chapter consists of the analysis of a specific (Western) film, I ‘heart’ Huckabees, which was selected because of the variety of ‘nihilisms’ found in it. The study seems to confirm that nihilism is indeed widespread in contemporary, postmodern culture.

Metabolic effects brought about by tricyclic antidepressants and the contribution of a medicinal plant in alleviating high fat diet induced insulin resistance in male wistar rats

- Description: Type II diabetes is becoming a growing problem in developed countries worldwide. The median age for diagnosis was around sixty, but recent surveys have shown that the entire age distribution curve shifting left. The incidence of type II diabetes is thought to be parallel with the growing rate of obesity associated with an unhealthy western diet. Type II diabetes is an expensive disease to manage, it is for this reason that cheaper medication needs to be investigated in the form of traditional plants, such as Sutherlandia frutescens. Prescription medication, such as tricyclic antidepressants, may also increase body weight thereby playing a role in obesity. The cause of weight gain in such cases may go unrecognized or lead to cessation of the medication with or without the practitioner’s knowledge or approval. It is therefore necessary to investigate the causative agents responsible for the excessive weight gain. Drinking water containing extracts of S. frutescens or metformin was administered to two groups of eleven insulin resistant male Wistar rats. The insulin resistant control group received water without any medication. Rats were sacrificed after 8 weeks allowing for fasting blood glucose, insulin and tissue glycogen content determination. Glucose uptake was also determined using [3H] deoxyglucose. The effect of the medication and the diet on muscle post receptor insulin signaling proteins was determined through Western blots. Liver proteomics was also performed using 2-D electrophoresis. In a separate experiment 26 male Wistar rats were exposed to strepotozotocin toxin, 7 of these rats received intravenous insulin treatment, 7 rats received S. frutescens extract and 7 rats received a combination of both medications, the remaining 5 received no treatment and served as the control. Rats were sacrificed after 6 days allowing for fasting blood glucose, insulin and tissue glycogen content determination. Two groups of 14 male Wistar rats received amitriptyline or trimipramine (common tricyclic antidepressants) in their drinking water, the control group (30 rats) received water without any medication. The rats’ weight and food consumption was monitored throughout the trial and their oxygen consumption was also determined. Rats were sacrificed after 6 weeks or 14 weeks of medicinal compliance allowing for fasting blood glucose, insulin and tissue glycogen content determination. Glucose uptake was also determined using [3H] deoxyglucose. S. frutescens treatment normalized circulating serum insulin levels and significantly increased the rate of glucose clearance. Certain post receptor insulin signaling proteins were also significantly increased relative to the insulin resistant control group. 2-D electrophoresis identified the normalization of protein levels associated with the urea cycle. S. frutescens was also able to, independently; maintain normoglycaemic levels in the strepotozotocin treated group. The tricyclic antidepressants significantly increased blood glucose levels while significantly reducing tissue glycogen levels for both sacrifice periods. Serum insulin remained unchanged while a significant increase in insulin degradation and insulin degrading enzyme levels were found for both antidepressants. S. frutescens shows promise as a low cost antidiabetic medication for future use. Although the antidepressants did not promote weight gain, the increase in blood glucose levels may be cause for concern in patients with a pre-disposition toward developing diabetes.

Monitoring and intelligent control for complex curvature friction stir welding

- Description: A multi-input multi-output system to implement on-line process monitoring and intelligent control of complex curvature friction stir welding was proposed. An extra rotation axis was added to the existing three translation axes to perform friction stir welding of complex curvature other than straight welding line. A clamping system was designed for locating and holding the workpieces to bear the large force involved in the process between the welding tool and workpieces. Process parameters (feed rate, spindle speed, tilt angle and plunge depth), and process conditions (parent material and curvature), were used as factors for the orthogonal array experiments to collect sensor data of force, torque and tool temperature using multiple sensors and telemetry system. Using statistic analysis of the experimental data, sensitive signal features were selected to train the feed-forward neural networks, which were used for mapping the relationships between process parameters, process conditions and sensor data. A fuzzy controller with initial input/output membership functions and fuzzy rules generated on-line from the trained neural network was applied to perceive process condition changes and make adjustment of process parameters to maintain tool/workpiece contact and energy input. Input/output scaling factors of the fuzzy controller were tuned on-line to improve output response to the amount and trend of control variable deviation from the reference value. Simulation results showed that the presented neuro-fuzzy control scheme has adaptability to process conditions such as parent material and curvature changes, and that the control variables were well regulated. The presented neuro-fuzzy control scheme can be also expected to be applied in other multi-input multi-output machining processes.

- Description: Performance management systems help align individual goals and objectives with those of the organisation. The system engages employees and thereby directs them toward achieving the strategic goals of the organisation. The purpose of this research study was to conduct an investigation at a manufacturing jeweller in the Western Cape to establish whether a performance management system would facilitate the achievement of the organisation’s strategic goals and objectives. Preliminary investigations showed that the organisation was using a performance appraisal process which was not effective in facilitating the organisation’s strategic objectives. Based on the initial investigation, this study was undertaken. To achieve the goals of this study, 33 employees of the organisation were presented with a questionnaire based on important key elements of performance management. Responses were received from 31 employees, of which one was from senior management, two from management, three from supervisory staff, and 25 from general staff members. Their responses to the questionnaire were analysed and evaluated and, based on the findings, recommendations were made. The results of the study showed that problems exist in the organisation which impede achievement of its strategic goals. A performance management system would assist the organisation in many of these areas to overcome the identified problems. The results of the study will enable the management of the organisation to design and implement a performance management system to facilitate the achievement of the organisation’s strategic goals.

The contract terminates upon an agreed or ascertainable date determined by the parties and the conclusion of the contract. Section 186(1)(b) of the Labour Relations Act 1995, however, defines the failure to renew a fixed term contract on the same or similar terms where the employee reasonably expected the contract to be renewed, as a dismissal. In this treatise the scope and content of this provision is considered with reference to relevant case law. The factors and considerations that establish a reasonable expectation are highlighted and considered. The question as to whether or not this provision also provides for the situation where an employee expects indefinite employment is also considered and critically discussed. The author concludes that the provision should not be interpreted in such a manner that an expectation of permanent employment is created.

On the characterisation of copper indium diselenide based photovoltaic devices

- Description: Photovoltaic (PV) modules based on thin film systems of CuInSe2 (CIS) and its alloys on low cost substrates are promising candidates to meet the long term efficiency, reliability and manufacturing cost goals. The attention to the CIS solar cell technology is because of the high absorption coefficient of the solar cell absorber layer. Solar cells and PV modules are conventionally assessed by measuring the currentvoltage characteristic of the device. This thesis presents an assessment procedure developed capable of assessing the device parameters with reference to I-V measurements. This thesis then characterizes the performance of the CIS based solar cells and modules in conjunction with other PV modules of different technologies such as crystalline Silicon modules by analyzing the light and dark I-V measurements of the devices. The light and dark I-V characteristics of PV devices were investigated and device parameters were extracted from the I-V data. The extraction and interpretation of these device parameters has a variety of important applications. It has been proven that the device parameters can be used for quality control during production and to provide insights into the operation of the PV devices, thereby improving the efficiency of the devices. The assessment comprises light I-V measurements at standard test conditions (STC), irradiance dependence measurements, parasitic series and shunt resistances measurements and the dark I-V measurements of the PV devices. The PV modules assessed comprise different technologies, namely, thin film based modules (CIS and a-Si) and multicrystalline Si and Edged-defined Film-fed Growth Si (EFG-Si). The dark I-V measurements results showed that the EFG-Si module has acceptable shunt (900 W) and series (0.4 W) resistances, thereby leading to the higher power output depicted from the light I-V measurements. The low quality cells of a-Si module were so low that the fill factor was the smallest (43%). In addition, the dark I-V measurements results revealed that CIS modules are less dependent to temperature at high voltages.

- Description: The need for alternative strategies for the prevention and treatment of diabetes is growing rapidly as type II diabetes is reaching epidemic status in our society. This need was the basis for the creation of this study, as it was necessary to start looking towards medicinal plants as potential antidiabetic treatment and no comprehensive in vitro model existed. In creating a model for determining the effects of alternative traditional medicines as antidiabetic potentiates, it was necessary that two metabolic pathways, namely glucose uptake and insulin secretion, which play a significant role in glucose homeostasis, be at the centre of our investigations. The objective of this project was to optimize the methodology required to screen and ultimately determine the effectiveness of the plant extracts Kankerbos and MRC2003, as antidiabetic potentiates, through observing their effects on glucose utilisation and insulin secretion. If these medicinal plants are going to make a positive contribution to the health of type II diabetic South Africans, then the determination of their efficacy is essential. The cell lines used in this study included 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, Chang liver, C2C12 muscle and INS-1 rat pancreatic cells. Each cell line represents a different in vivo organ that is known to have an influence on glucose homeostasis in our bodies, each with its own unique metabolic pathways and mechanisms of activity, thereby making each one a vital component in the study. The positive controls for the two models were insulin and metformin (glucose utilisation) and glibenclamide (insulin secretion). Insulin was shown to provide a significant increase in the amount of glucose taken up in C2C12 muscle and Chang liver cells for acute conditions. Chronic treatments with metformin provided a significant increase in glucose utilised by Chang liver cells. Glibenclamide was an effective positive control for stimulating insulin secretion by INS-1 cells under acute conditions as there was a significant increase in the amount of insulin secreted. MRC2003 did not show any significant antidiabetic activity. Sutherlandia frutescens (Kankerbos) showed biological activities comparable to some of the more recognized antidiabetic compounds throughout the study. With regards to the glucose utilisation model, Kankerbos was seen to have both acute and chronic effects in different cell lines. In the C2C12 muscle cell line, Kankerbos significantly increased glucose uptake when they were exposed to acute conditions. Kankerbos also had a significant effect on the Chang liver cells as it was observed that under both acute and chronic conditions, this plant extract induced the uptake of glucose into these cells. With respect to the insulin secretion model involving INS-1 cells, no significant effect was seen during acute exposure with Kankerbos treatment. However during chronic exposure, an increase in insulin secretion was initiated by this plant extract. Overall, the results of this study suggest that Kankerbos has a twofold mechanism of action for its glucose-lowering effects. Given that Kankerbos is widely available in South Africa, this study was valuable as it provided an indication that Kankerbos has antidiabetic activities and could possibly be used as an alternative antidiabetic medication.

- Description: The objective of this research was to establish a means to assist, and ultimately encourage, small and micro building contractors to develop and submit a Workplace Skills Plan (WSP) that both qualifies for levy grant recovery and provides strategic value to the organisation. Targeted contractors are those who do not have the know-how necessary to develop such a WSP. Thus the need for a basic approach or model that will, through its simplicity and ease of application, assist and encourage such contractors nonetheless to undertake the process. Achieving this objective required a detailed examination of relevant literature and legislation, to identify the basic or minimum requirements for developing a strategic WSP and for meeting grant recovery regulations respectively. Newly released grant recovery regulations were examined to identify the implications thereof, and to establish the minimum legislative requirements, for the WSPs of small and micro contractors. Existing relevant general training and training needs assessment models were examined to identify the requirements for developing a strategic WSP. To establish the minimum strategic requirements it was necessary to firstly identify all the requirements proposed by the different models for identifying and meeting the training needs of an organisation, and thereafter reach a decision regarding which could be considered as minimum requirements. The decision rule for selection as a minimum strategic requirement was inclusion in all the surveyed models. To enable a less subjective analysis than relying solely on the opinion of the researcher, a content analysis was selected as the research technique, as the steps of a typical content analysis include a number of measures to increase objectivity. The legislative and strategic requirements identified by the study were converted into a series of simple sequential action steps to formulate a practical model that would guide the targeted contractors through the process of developing a value-adding WSP.

Public sector pharmacists' perception of the public sector performance management system

- Description: Performance Management aims to develop the employee and ensure that the work which the employee does is in line with organisational goals. However, many managers and employees do not like performance management systems and very often, for this reason, such a system does not succeed in meeting the organisation’s goals. The aim of this study was to determine the perceptions towards the performance management system of pharmacists working in the public sector. A questionnaire was compiled and pharmacists working in all public sector hospitals, provincial and municipal clinics and medical depots were asked to complete the questionnaire. The response rate was 66 percent. Seventy three percent of respondents had never undergone a performance evaluation, 75 percent stated it did not motivate them, 62.5 percent felt it did not improve poor performance, 90.6 percent felt the Performance Appraisal System did not reward good performance sufficiently and 63.6 percent felt it did not help with career progression. Seventy eight percent believed that the Performance Appraisal System did not effectively measure the pharmacists’ performance, and 82 percent felt that the System needed to be developed further. At least four evaluations should have been completed per year, yet 85 percent of respondents had experienced three or fewer evaluations since the System had been introduced. The analysis of the responses indicated that there was great dissatisfaction with the current performance management system. A few of the reasons are that the system in place did not effectively measure the pharmacists performance, that additional work done was not recognised, and that the process was extremely time-consuming. It may be concluded that the government needs to address the current problems being experienced with this system, as at present, it is not meeting the objectives it was intended to meet.

Redress for victims of crime in South Africa: a comparison with selected Commonwealth jurisdictions

- Description: In terms of the Constitution every person has the right to freedom and security of the person. This includes the right to be free from all forms of violence from either public or private sources. The state is charged with the duty to protect the individual from such harm. While the Constitution refers to the protection of victims of crime in broad and general terms without indicating how these rights should be protected, it makes meticulous and detailed provision for the rights of arrested, detained and accused persons. This leads to the popular belief that the Constitution protects the criminal and not the victim, engendering public dissatisfaction with the status quo, which is amplified by the fact that South Africa’s current legal dispensation for victims of crime does not embody the requirements of ubuntu and African customary law, which the Constitution declares to be binding on South African courts. This study analyses the means that exist in South African law for the victim of crime to obtain redress for criminal acts and proposes effective avenues through which victims can obtain redress, should the existing machinery prove to be inadequate. The term restitution is used to indicate recompense obtained from the perpetrator, while the term compensation refers to recompense obtained from the state. A comparative study is conducted to ascertain how the legal position of victims of crime in South Africa compares with that of victims of crime in Great Britain, India and New Zealand, respectively. South Africa does not have a state-funded victim compensation scheme such as those which exist in most developed countries. The respective proposals of the South African Law Commission for a victim compensation scheme and revised legislation to deal with offender/victim restitution are considered critically, inter alia, in the light of the findings of the comparative study. Proposals are made regarding changes to the South African legal system to bring it in line with international developments regarding restitution and compensation to victims of crime, attention being given to the meaning, significance and implementation of the doctrine of restorative justice when dealing with the aftermath of criminal injury. In addition to a complete revision of South African legislation dealing with offender/victim restitution, this study recommends the consolidation of the Road Accident Fund and the Compensation Fund operating in terms of the Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act. These two bodies should be amalgamated to create a unified Compensation Scheme to compensate victims of crime, as well as victims of traffic and industrial injuries. General qualifying criteria for claimants would be drafted, with specific criteria applying in cases of traffic, industrial and crime related injuries, respectively.

- Description: The last decade has seen an exodus of South African nurses migrating to "greener pastures". As a result of this migration, the South African Healthcare Service has been drained of one of its most essential resources – nurses. Subsequently, the crippling flight of nurses has thrown the nursing profession into a state of crisis. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is one of the more popular destinations for South African nurses, the main reason being the attractive financial rewards. One agency reports that they send an average of thirty nurses a month to various hospitals within the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Saudi Arabia is an Islamic country. Due to the uniqueness of the enforcement of the Islamic faith and the Saudi culture, many restrictions are imposed, particularly on women. The challenges and problems facing the South African nurses were, therefore, unique compared to elsewhere in the world. This research study had a primary and a secondary objective: The primary objective of this study was to explore and describe the lived experiences of South African nurses related to living and working in Saudi Arabia; The secondary objective of this study was to develop orientation guidelines to support South African nurses working and living in Saudi Arabia. The researcher utilized a qualitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual design based on a phenomenological approach to inquiry, in an attempt to answer the question: "What are the professional and personal experiences of the South African registered nurses working and living in Saudi Arabia?" Eleven registered nurses were selected to participate by means of purposive sampling. These nurses had been living in Saudi Arabia between three and six months. Consent was obtained from participants and the ethics committee of both the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre. The central theme emanating from the study was recognized as being 'Cultural Diversity'. The sub-themes identified related to the registered nurses’: - Religious/spiritual adaptation - Environmental adaptation - Emotional/psychological adaptation - Professional adaptation Based on the identified themes, guidelines were formulated to assist South African registered nurses when migrating to Saudi Arabia. Utilization of these should assist the South African registered nurse in assimilating into both the cultural and working environment. However, in reality, the outcome showed that no one can be prepared fully for what awaits them in Saudi Arabia.

- Description: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) is on the increase globally, with further increases expected in developing countries, such as South Africa. World Health Organization (Medical Chronicle, 2006:14) estimations indicate that the number of DM sufferers will double over the next 30 years. This increasing number of diabetics is expected to have enormous economical implications. One of the consequences of the increase in DM sufferers is the increase in deaths due to diabetes related complications. In 2000, 3.2 million people died of DM and diabetes related complications compared with 3 million who died from HIV/AIDS related illnesses (William & Pickup, 2004:64). Health services are financially burdened by DM complications that result in heavy demands in both direct costs of hospitalization and medication as well as indirect costs such as manpower of staff involved in the care of the patient (Leuner, 2000:410). Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a prominent life-threatening complication of type 1 diabetes mellitus and, if not treated medically, it can lead to coma and death. DKA accounts for 14 per cent of all diabetic related hospital admissions and has a mortality rate of 5 to 10 per cent (Pickup & Williams, 2003:1). Rapid identification of DKA is necessary to improve patient care. George- Gray and Chernecky (2002:96) suggest patient outcomes are affected by the nurse’s ability to recognize the clinical features of DKA. It is important, therefore, for the nurses to understand the signs and symptoms and treatment of this diabetes related complication. National health policies and treatment guidelines should be aimed at addressing DKA treatment through setting guidelines for diabetic care (Peters, 2004:22). The main goal of this study was to determine registered nurses’ knowledge of DKA and to develop guidelines to assist registered nurses in providing adequate and effective health care to prevent DKA reoccurrence. The research study is based pm Bergam’s model on quality of care and accountability. Bergman claims that several preconditions must be filled in order to be accountable, including: • Accountability • Responsibility • Authority • Ability (Bergman (1982:8) emphasizes that ability reflects the registered nurses’ accountability, which is composed of values, knowledge and skills.) The study was divided into two phases. Phase one determined registered nurses’ knowledge related to the management of DKA. Phase two of the study included the developing guidelines to assist registered nurses in providing adequate and effective health care to patients with DKA. The design of the study is quantitative, explorative, descriptive and contextual; a survey was performed using a questionnaire based on a literature study. Ethical principals were maintained throughout the study. Permission to the study was sought from the Local Health Authorities and the heads of department where the research was undertaken. Findings of the research were analysed and discussed in the research. The knowledge of the majority of the respondents was found to be average. Out of the thirty- two respondents 52.8 percent possessed adequate knowledge the management of DKA and 63.4 percent possessed adequate knowledge on the management of DM. Two recommendations to assist registered nurses in the implementation of guidelines of the recommendations were also provided.

- Description: The complex environment of an intensive care unit is associated with a considerable amount of stress. Intensive care nurses are confronted daily with increasing work demands, emanating from the growing numbers of critically-ill patients; the introduction of highly sophisticated technologies in the intensive care environment; increasing competition between health care institutions; increased work loads; and limited career opportunities caused by, among other things, budget cuts by the government (Janssen, De Jonge & Bakker, 1999:1360). Research has shown that such stressors can result in mental, physical and behavioural stress reactions among nurses (Demerouti, Bakker, Nachreiner and Schaufeli, 2000:454). The objective of this study is to explore and describe registered nurses’ perceptions of factors causing stress in intensive care environments of state hospitals. The main purpose of the study is to develop guidelines for a stress management programme, to assist registered nurses to cope with the stressors in an intensive care environment. The research design is placed within a quantitative, explorative and descriptive contextual framework. Validity and reliability in testing and evaluating the research questionnaire are discussed, as well as the ethical and legal considerations relating to this research study. Findings of the research study will be utilized to assist the researcher in developing guidelines for a stress management programme to assist registered nurses in coping with stress in an intensive care environment

- Description: Corporate scandals such as Enron, WorldCom and Parmalat, have focused recent governance efforts in the domain of financial reporting due to fraudulent and/or erroneous accounting practices. In addition, the ineffectiveness of the current system of controls has been highlighted, including that some directors have been weak and ineffective monitors of managers. This board of director ‘weakness’ has called for additional mechanisms for monitoring and controlling of management, focusing on financial reporting. This problem intensifies in that today companies function in real-time, and decisions are based on available realtime financial information. However, the assurances provided by traditional auditing take place months after the transactions have occurred and therefore, a trust problem arises because information is not verified in real-time. Consequently, the errors and fraud concealed within the financial information is not discovered until months later. To address this trust problem a conceptual causal model is proposed in this study based on the principles of systems theory. The emergent property of the causal model is increased trust and control. This study establishes that mutual assurances assist in building trust and that information security assists in safeguarding trust. Subsequently, in order to have a positive relationship between the company directors and various stakeholders, uncertainty needs to be contained, and the level of trust needs to surpass the perceived risks. The study concludes that assurances need to be provided in real-time to restore stakeholder confidence and trust in the domain of financial reporting. In order to provide assurances in real-time, continuous auditing is required to verify the integrity of financial information when it becomes available, and not months later. A continuous auditing process has its foundations grounded in information technology and attends to the challenges in real-time by addressing the standardisation of data to enable effective analysis, the validation of the accuracy of the data and the reliability of the system.

- Description: Managing cultural differences in today’s work environment has received the attention of researchers all over the world. What has received far less attention is the managing of the cultural differences between service provider workers and customers and how this is perceived to lead to achieving great service quality. This research project focuses on the cultural differences between culturally diverse South African service provider workers and South African customers, with some reference to international customers. The questionnaire used in this research includes questions embodying the service quality instruments developed by Parasuraman, Zeithaml, and Berry (1988) and Hofstede’s (1991) cultural dimensions. The questionnaire was completed by 81 students of the East Cape Midland College in the Nelson Mandela Metropole. A Pearson’s correlation coefficient was calculated for each service quality instrument and each cultural dimension. The resulting correlation coefficients were analysed and a positive or negative correlation between each service quality instrument and each cultural dimension is shown. The implications of each positive and negative correlation are shown and how it impacts on perceived service quality delivery. The implications for service quality management are shown, followed by recommendations for the management of a culturally diverse workforce.

- Description: The method of paired comparisons can be found all the way back to 1860, where Fechner made the first publication in this method, using it for his psychometric investigations [4]. Thurstone formalised the method by providing a mathematical background to it [9-11] and in 1927 the method’s birth took place with his psychometric publications, one being “a law of comparative judgment” [12-14]. The law of comparative judgment is a set of equations relating the proportion of times any stimulus k is judged greater on a given attribute than any other stimulus j to the scales and discriminal dispersions of the two stimuli on the psychological continuum. The amount of research done for discrete models of paired comparisons is not a lot. This study develops a new discrete model, the SL-model for paired comparisons. Paired comparisons data processing in which objects have an upper limit to their scores was also not yet developed, and making such a model is one of the aims of this report. The SLmodel is thus developed in this context; however, the model easily generalises to not necessarily having an upper limit on scores.

- Description: South Africa’s transition to democracy in 1994 has heralded a re-entry into the global economy. This has meant that for the first time in more than 40 years of isolation because of “apartheid” policies, South African companies are facing global competition. The South African automotive industry has undergone major changes over the past few years. All the assemblers are now either wholly or partially owned by overseas parent companies. Under globalisation, foreign ownership of locally owned suppliers has also been escalating. The Behr strategy and values were examined to determine whether they are consistent with companies operating in the international environment. The literature study was conducted by using textbooks, periodicals and the internet. The empirical study was conducted by means of a questionnaire addressed to the Behr executives. The results of this empirical study were then directly correlated to the theoretical aspects. Distinctive competences, market growth and product development strategies were identified and comparisons made with theory.
