- Description: Introduction-Motivation: Living, studying, traveling and working abroad can be an incredible, challenging experience or a nightmare, depending on how you interact with the local culture. Many things bring on culture shock: different food and ways of eating, shops and prices, attitude of people, customs and language problems. It is the strangeness, uneasiness or even fear we experience when we move from our home country and familiar surroundings, to live in a new and different society. Culture shock is now considered to be a natural part of the adjustment to studying abroad (Carmen, 1998:3). Although it can be disconcerting and a little crazy, the shock gradually eases as you begin to understand the new culture. It is useful to realize that often the reactions and perceptions of others towards you - and you towards them - are not personal evaluations, but are based on a clash of cultural values. The more skilled you become in recognizing how and when cultural values and behaviours are likely to come in conflict, the easier it becomes to make adjustments that can help you avoid serious difficulties. This research is aimed at identifying the most common differences between local South African and Chinese culture, and will investigate the experiences of Chinese students at the University of Port Elizabeth (UPE), South Africa, as well as a local Chinese family in order to develop a strategy to minimize culture shock. Research Problem: Chinese students at UPE experience various difficulties in adjusting to local university life. These problems range from practical difficulties regarding transport, accommodation and finances to less easily defined issues related to language and culture. While the “practical” difficulties are often prioritized and solved (or at least alleviated), those relating to culture are not adequately addressed. Chinese students at UPE consequently find it difficult to socialize with local students; they find it difficult to interact during lectures, and they are unsure about forming student-teacher relationships. All of this impedes academic progress, increase worry/fear of failure, and lead to homesickness and ultimately depression. Local Chinese business people have, through trial and error, learnt to adapt to the idiosyncrasies of South African culture (in its diverse forms). This is apparent from interviews which were conducted with a local Chinese businessman and his family who have successfully adapted to the local environment in order to identify the major obstacles to cultural acclimatization, as well as useful strategies, communicational ones among others, that enabled them to adapt.

- Description: This study addresses the fact that the current Cadbury investment appraisal process does not adequately address the strategic implications of many capital investment decisions. Although attempts are made to quantify, in financial terms, the strategic benefits from a given investment, it appears that many perceived benefits are left out of the appraisal process because they lack precise financial quantification, resulting in managers placing greater reliance on the qualitative dimensions of their investment decision-making such as judgement and intuition. The current Cadbury process is based on the unequivocal advice that academics give to organisations and to managers about how to appraise largescale capital investment projects. The use of discounted cash flow techniques, based upon the discounting of decision contingent cash flows at the organisations opportunity cost of capital is regarded as the definitive investment appraisal technique. On this, the academic literature is clear. Whilst there are strong theoretical justifications for the use of discounted cash flow based models, managers continue to use non-DCF appraisal techniques such as payback irrespective of their theoretical shortcomings. The lack of use of a sophisticated risk assessment model is also disappointing, with Cadbury ignoring individual project risk and adopting a naive approach. Finally, this study indicates that Cadbury managers need not be forced into choosing either an economic/normative approach or a strategic/managerial approach to capital-investment decision-making but that rather a hybrid approach, including both the economic and strategic dimensions of choice, is more applicable for effective strategy incorporation.

- Description: The research problem in this study was to identify how successful the methods are that organisations use within the Manufacturing Engineering and Related Services Education and Training Authorities (MERSETA) chambers to develop, implement and maintain learnerships. To achieve this aim a literature examination to determine the aspects of workplace learning were explored, including the various perspectives of learning, together with an investigation into workplace learning. Further, apprenticeships, traineeships, learnerships were discussed; including the concepts vocational education and training standards, and competence explored. Finally a process model for effective learnership implementation was presented based on international approaches together with the South African models and current practices. - v - The process learnership model served as a basis for drawing up a survey questionnaire to establish the extent to which organisations agreed or disagreed with the learnership model developed. The survey was limited to the “automobile” and “new tyre” chambers of the MERSETA. The results obtained from the empirical study indicted a high degree of agreement with the process model for effective learnership implementation. The results obtained from the quantitative data, and qualitative data were used to adapt the learnership process model, and produce a six-phase integrated learnership model. From the survey it become evident that organisations needed to be sensitised and educated as to learnerships before considering more seriously learnership implementation. Further, it emerged that learnerships cannot only be effective within a process approach, and that it should also take place within a positive “organisational learning culture”. Organisations and Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs) can now use the six-phase integrated learnership model with confidence, as there was a high degree of agreement with the learnership model that was developed as part of this research study. The six-phase integrated learnership model has been comprehensively developed and surveyed by organisations that are currently implementing learnerships on a large scale. Organisations and SETAs can now give effect to the Skills Development Act No. 97 of 1998, and contribute to the National skills Development Strategy of 2001, which aims to improve the workplace skills of all South Africans.

FSSWs have been done without the keyhole being eliminated. Elimination of the keyhole would result in the process being more commercially viable. This dissertation focuses on an attempt of eliminating the keyhole using a retractable pin tool as well as a comparison of the weld integrity of a FSSW to that of a conventional Resistance Spot Weld (RSW). Welds were conducted on aluminium alloy 6063 T4. Comparisons between different weld procedures were done. Further analysis of the weld integrity between FSSW and RSW were conducted, comparing tensile strengths, microstructure and hardness. For the above welding procedure to take place, the current retractable pin tool, patented by PE Technikon, was redesigned. Problems associated during the welding process and the results obtained are documented. Reasons for the keyhole not being eliminated as well as recommendations for future work in the attempt to remove the keyhole are discussed.

- Description: The need for successful management of a guest house in the increasingly competitive hospitality industry in South Africa, compels guest house owners to understand their customers’ needs and deliver service of acceptable quality. The objective of the research is to find out what business travellers expect from a guest house and how these expectations compare with the perceptions of guest house owners in Port Elizabeth. Conclusions drawn from this research would also benefit guest house owners in other parts of the country. A literature review was conducted to provide an understanding of the nature of service and the role “evidence of service” can play in the perception of quality. The empirical study aimed at comparing business travellers’ expectations of guest house service with guest house owners’ perceptions of their guests’ expectations. The empirical findings showed that business travellers deemed secure parking and professionalism of staff as the most important attributes, while guest house owners thought it would be friendliness of front desk staff and efficient handling of complaints. Moreover, both groups indicated that cleanliness of rooms and services performed by staff adequately the first time, were of particular importance. It was also found that the importance rating of the different service dimensions were not significantly influenced by the business travellers’ gender, managerial position, nights of stay or by the guest house grading. The study proposes that guest house owners continue to focus on strategies for training and developing competent employees, simplify the steps of service delivery and improve on the standards of the servcie to ensure that business facilities are in line with the expectations of business travelers.

- Description: Information security is crucial to the continuous well-being of modern orga- nizations. Humans play a signfiicant role in the processes needed to secure an organization's information resources. Without an adequate level of user co-operation and knowledge, many security techniques are liable to be misused or misinterpreted by users. This may result in an adequate security measure becoming inadequate. It is therefor necessary to educate the orga- nization's employees regarding information security and also to establish a corporate sub-culture of information security in the organization, which will ensure that the employees have the correct attitude towards their security responsibilities. Current information security education programs fails to pay su±cient attention to the behavioral sciences. There also exist a lack of knowledge regarding the principles, and processes, that would be needed for the establishment of an corporate sub-culture, specific to information security. Without both the necessary knowledge, and the desired attitude amongst the employee, it will be impossible to guarantee that the organi- zation's information resources are secure. It would therefor make sense to address both these dimensions to the human factor in information security, using a single integrated, holistic approach. This dissertation presents such an approach, which is based on an integration of sound behavioral theories.

- Description: This study aimed at exploring the developmental profile of HIV positive/AIDS infants and children (three to 35 months) over a period of 11 months in the Nelson Mandela Metropole, utilising the Revised Extended Griffiths Scales of Mental Development (GSMD). The purpose was to generate information about the development of HIV positive/AIDS infants and children, highlighting developmental strengths and weaknesses to ultimately aid the custodians of these children with their interventions. A non-probability purposive sampling method was applied, and a longitudinal profile was generated as participants were assessed twice. Participants were all outpatients at Kwazakhele Day Clinic, Dora Nginza and Livingstone Hospitals in the Nelson Mandela Metropole, and were located for the study through their caregiver’s attendance of an HIV support groups at the Dora Nginza Hospital. Data was analysed statistically using descriptive statistics and Hotelings-T² tests. Results indicated a significant difference between first and second assessment on the General Quotient and on two of the six subscales, namely Eye-Hand Co-ordination (D) and Practical Reasoning (F). It was deduced that development declined or did not improve as participants aged.

Participants were all outpatients at Kwazakhele Day Clinic, Dora Nginza and Livingstone Hospitals in the Nelson Mandela Metropole, and were located for the study through their caregiver’s attendance of an HIV support groups at the Dora Nginza Hospital. Data was analysed statistically using descriptive statistics and Hotelings-T² tests. Results indicated a significant difference between first and second assessment on the General Quotient and on two of the six subscales, namely Eye-Hand Co-ordination (D) and Practical Reasoning (F). It was deduced that development declined or did not improve as participants aged.

Most employees, who were not interested in seeking a supervisory position, indicated that there were no factors that would motivate them to want to become supervisors. Amongst the four content theories of motivation, the most relevant theory in interpreting the results was the Herzberg’s two factor theory. He stated that “employees are motivated by their own inherent need to succeed at a challenging task”. This is exactly what was also found in this research. One of the interesting findings is that Herzberg’s hygiene factors played almost no role as a motivator or demotivator for either current supervisors or employees. The significance of the findings for managers is that they should not strive to motivate employees to become supervisors, but rather select people who already have a high level of internal self-motivation. If they are simply looking for good workers, they should select a different type of employee who does not have a high need for achievement.

The PMD of all fibres tested showed changes in the PMD when the environmental temperature was changing, but remained constant for constant temperatures. This is explained by the structure and thermal coefficients of the materials used to make up the fibres. It is found that the temperature gradient has a large effect on the magnitude of the PMD fluctuations. Field measurements were conducted on buried and aerial cable. It is shown that the PMD of aerial cables shows a higher degree of scatter than the PMD of buried cables. The scatter seen in the PMD can be attributed to changing environmental temperature as well as movement of the cable. The PMD of the deployed fibre is in all cases found to be considerably higher than the PMD of laboratory fibre. Age of the fibre, deployment conditions and installation procedures are believed to be responsible for the higher value. Long term monitoring of the PMD is also found to be critical when testing fibres. Over- or underestimations of the average PMD are often made in the field due to only a limited number of readings being taken. Having a large test ensemble of input states of polarization is shown to increase the accuracy of the results. For aerial cables, movement of the cable has the same effect as scrambling the input SOP and hence the results will be more accurate. Buried cables on the other hand show little movement and hence only one input SOP is often tested. Scrambling the input SOP will therefore increase the accuracy of these results.

As the relationship between consumerism and patriarchy continues to dominate global economic and social practices, this appropriation points to a denial of the social and political importance of the feminist movement. An acknowledgement of our own complicity in the perpetuation of a sexist, racist and classist ideology – along with an understanding of the complicity of the media – is crucial in explaining relations of domination within our society (Thompson 1990). A study of television advertising practice allows us to “explore meaning as a social product, enmeshed in webs of power” (Jordan and Wheedon 1995:543). Consumer ‘freedom’ is the compulsory freedom (Slater 1997), as we buy as many symbols as products. This study shows that for all the ‘strides’ feminism has made, media images of women are largely traditional, prescriptive (although an ironic distance is often implied) or overtly sexualised. Feminism is never mentioned, as women’s gains are presented as ahistorical in a ‘post-feminist’ world. Third wave feminism is an attempt to embrace all feminisms and feminists, working to inject some substance and truth behind advertising’s feminist veneer.

Implementing the CoSaWoE models in a commercial workflow product

- Description: Workflow systems have gained popularity not only as a research topic, but also as a key component of Enterprize Resource Planning packages and e- business. Comprehensive workflow products that automate intra- as well inter-organizational information flow are now available for commercial use. Standardization efforts have centered mostly around the interoperability of these systems, however a standard access control model have yet to be adopted. The research community has developed several models for access control to be included as part of workflow functionality. Commercial systems, however, are still implementing access control functionality in a proprietary manner. This dissertation investigates whether a comprehensive model for gain- ing context-sensitive access control, namely CoSAWoE, can be purposefully implemented in a commercial workflow product. Using methods such as an exploratory prototype, various aspects of the model was implemented to gain an understanding of the di±culties developers face when attempting to map the model to existing proprietary software. Oracle Workflow was chosen as an example of a commercial workflow product. An investigtion of the features of this product, together with the prototype, revealed the ability to affect access control in a similar manner to the model: by specifying access control constraints during administration and design, and then enforcing those constraints dynamically during run-time. However, only certain components within these two aspects of the model directly effected the commercial workflow product. It was argued that the first two requirements of context-sensitive access control, order of events and strict least privilege, addressed by the object design, role engineering and session control components of the model, can be simulated if such capabilities are not pertinently available as part of the product. As such, guidelines were provided for how this can be achieved in Oracle Workflow. However, most of the implementation effort focussed on the last requirement of context-sensitive access control, namely separation of duties. The CoSAWoE model proposes SoD administration steps that includes expressing various business rules through a set of conflicting entities which are maintained outside the scope of the workflow system. This component was implemented easily enough through tables which were created with a relational database. Evaluating these conflicts during run-time to control worklist generation proved more di±cult. First, a thorough understanding of the way in which workflow history is maintained was necessary. A re-usable function was developed to prune user lists according to user involvement in previous tasks in the workflow and the conflicts specified for those users and tasks. However, due to the lack of a central access control service, this re- usable function must be included in the appropriate places in the workflow process model. Furthermore, the dissertation utilized a practical example to develop a prototype. This prototype served a dual purpose: firstly, to aid the author's understanding of the features and principles involved, and secondly, to illustrate and explore the implementation of the model as described in the previous paragraphs. In conclusion the dissertation summarized the CoSAWoE model's compo- nents which were found to be product agnostic, directly or indirectly imple- mentable, or not implemented in the chosen workflow product. The lessons learnt and issues surrounding the implementation effort were also discussed before further research in terms of XML documents as data containers for the workfow process were suggested.

Tools exist that can provide users with a choice of anonymity or pseudonymity. However, many Web transactions require the release of personally identifying information, thus rendering such tools infeasible in many instances. Since it is then a given that users are often required to release personal information, which could be recorded, it follows that they require a greater degree of control over the information they release. Hippocratic databases, designed by Agrawal, Kiernan, Srikant, and Xu (2002), aim to give users greater control over information stored in a data- base. Their design was inspired by the medical Hippocratic oath, and makes data privacy protection a fundamental responsibility of the database itself. To achieve the privacy of data, Hippocratic databases are governed by 10 key privacy principles. This dissertation argues, that asides from a few challenges, the 10 prin- ciples of Hippocratic databases can be applied to log ¯les. This argument is supported by presenting a high-level functional view of a Hippocratic log file architecture. This architecture focuses on issues that highlight the con- trol users gain over their personal information that is collected in log files. By presenting a layered view of the aforementioned architecture, it was, fur- thermore, possible to provide greater insight into the major processes that would be at work in a Hippocratic log file implementation. An exploratory prototype served to understand and demonstrate certain of the architectural components of Hippocratic log files. This dissertation, thus, makes a contribution to the ideal of providing users with greater control over their personal information, by proposing the use of Hippocratic logfiles.

This study reports findings on the effectiveness of oxyfluorinated polypropylene fibres to control plastic shrinkage cracks, and the effect the addition of ultra-fine material has on the formation and/or propagation of these cracks. Findings indicate that low volume dosages (2 kg/m³), of oxyfluorinated polypropylene fibre significantly reduced the formation of plastic shrinkage cracks under test conditions. Furthermore, that the addition of ultra-fine material in excess of 63 kg/m³ increased the formation and/or development of plastic shrinkage cracks.

- Description: The nature and scope of this thesis can be divided into four categories: • FORMING PARAMETERS • Identification of various laser forming parameters in order to produce specimens of similar dimension (radius of curvature). • TEMPERATURE AND MICROSTRUCTURE • To study the effect of maximum temperature reached during the forming operation on the microstructure of the various specimens. • FATIGUE LIFE • Compare the fatigue life of the specimens produced by various laser parameters to that of the original material, and also the fatigue life of mechanical formed specimens. • RESIDUAL STRESS PROFILE Determine if the laser forming process induces detrimental residual stress magnitudes in the specimens. The main objective of this thesis was to gain an understanding of the way in which laser forming affects the fatigue performance and residual stress magnitude / distribution of dual phase steel. Although lasers have been used successfully in various manufacturing processes (welding, cutting, marking, etc.), little information is available on the influence of laser forming on many automotive alloys such as dual phase steel. The first part of the work involved a literature review of the process and factors affecting the laser forming process. It became clear from the literature overview that laser forming of sheet material thicker than 1mm is complex in nature. The variables that can influence the process are complicated and their interaction with each other is not easily controlled. The main parameters that were thus controlled in this study are as follows: • Laser power (P) • Laser head travel speed (v) • Laser beam size (mm) The chapters that follow the literature review, deals with the laser forming process of dual phase steel and the production of fatigue specimens using various laser parameters. It was found that the following laser parameters resulted in specimens with approximately the same radius of curvature: Laser power KW Beam diameter mm Interval spacing % Overlap Scanning velocity m/min Line Energy J/m 5 20 10 50 2,5 2000 3,1 14 10,5 25 2 1550 1,5 7,5 7,5 0 1,2 1250 From the results obtained from fatigue testing specimens produced with the above settings, it is clear that the laser forming process has the potential to be employed as a production stage in the manufacture of wheel centre discs while maintaining adequate fatigue strength. Large beam diameters which cause heat penetration through the thickness of the specimen and hence microstructure breakdown should be avoided, since it was shown that these specimens exhibited impaired mechanical properties than those produced with a smaller laser beam diameter. The microstructural changes observed during the forming process needs to be considered since the mechanical properties of the material changes with a change in microstructure. A dramatic change in microstructure was observed; therefore it is of crucial importance that microstructural evaluation plays an important part in deciding optimum laser parameters for the forming process of ferrous alloys. During residual stress analysis, trends were observed between measurements taken at the same location of the samples; regardless whether measurements were taken on the laser irradiated side or the reverse side of the specimen. The only difference was the magnitude of the relieved residual stress. In most cases the obtained relieved residual stress was much smaller in magnitude than that of the original plate (in the bulk of the material). The surface indicated a slight tensile residual stress for most samples evaluated. A good correlation in distribution profile was obtained between microhardness and relieved residual stress distribution at the ‘middle of sample’ location. This indicates that an increase in hardness indicates an increase in residual stress magnitude for the laser formed specimens. In conclusion, this research has proved that it is possible to deform metal plate of a 3,5mm thickness with a CO2 laser system. The research also established the effect of process parameters on the final product’s shape/bend angle and characterised the effect of the laser forming process on the material’s mechanical properties and structural integrity.

- Description: The nature and scope of this thesis can be divided into four categories: • FORMING PARAMETERS • Identification of various laser forming parameters in order to produce specimens of similar dimension (radius of curvature). • TEMPERATURE AND MICROSTRUCTURE • To study the effect of maximum temperature reached during the forming operation on the microstructure of the various specimens. • FATIGUE LIFE • Compare the fatigue life of the specimens produced by various laser parameters to that of the original material, and also the fatigue life of mechanical formed specimens. • RESIDUAL STRESS PROFILE Determine if the laser forming process induces detrimental residual stress magnitudes in the specimens. The main objective of this thesis was to gain an understanding of the way in which laser forming affects the fatigue performance and residual stress magnitude / distribution of dual phase steel. Although lasers have been used successfully in various manufacturing processes (welding, cutting, marking, etc.), little information is available on the influence of laser forming on many automotive alloys such as dual phase steel. The first part of the work involved a literature review of the process and factors affecting the laser forming process. It became clear from the literature overview that laser forming of sheet material thicker than 1mm is complex in nature. The variables that can influence the process are complicated and their interaction with each other is not easily controlled. The main parameters that were thus controlled in this study are as follows: • Laser power (P) • Laser head travel speed (v) • Laser beam size (mm) The chapters that follow the literature review, deals with the laser forming process of dual phase steel and the production of fatigue specimens using various laser parameters. It was found that the following laser parameters resulted in specimens with approximately the same radius of curvature: Laser power KW Beam diameter mm Interval spacing % Overlap Scanning velocity m/min Line Energy J/m 5 20 10 50 2,5 2000 3,1 14 10,5 25 2 1550 1,5 7,5 7,5 0 1,2 1250 From the results obtained from fatigue testing specimens produced with the above settings, it is clear that the laser forming process has the potential to be employed as a production stage in the manufacture of wheel centre discs while maintaining adequate fatigue strength. Large beam diameters which cause heat penetration through the thickness of the specimen and hence microstructure breakdown should be avoided, since it was shown that these specimens exhibited impaired mechanical properties than those produced with a smaller laser beam diameter. The layers were assessed by X-ray diffraction, electron and optical microscopy, photoluminescence and Hall measurements. Furthermore, the influence of hydrogenation and annealing on the electrical and optical properties of GaSb was investigated. It is shown that the growth temperature and the V/III ratio play a vital role in the resulting surface morphology of homoepitaxial and heteroepitaxial InAs layers. Growth at low temperatures is found to promote three-dimensional growth in both cases, with improvements in the surface morphologies observed for higher growth temperatures. All the investigated epilayers are n-type. It is shown that the electrical properties of heteroepitaxial InAs epilayers are complicated by a competition between bulk conduction and conduction due to a surface accumulation and an interface layer. The low temperature photoluminescence spectra of homoepitaxial InAs are dominated by two transitions. These are identified as band-to-band/excitonic and donor-acceptor recombination. The incorporation efficiency of antimony (Sb) into InAs1-xSbx is dependent on the growth temperature and the V/III ratio. Under the growth conditions used in this study, the incorporation efficiency of Sb is controlled by the thermal stability of the two constituent binaries (i.e. InAs and InSb). Changes in the low temperature photoluminescence spectra are detected with increasing x. From temperature and laser power dependent measurements, the highest energy line is attributed to band-to-band/excitonic recombination, while the peak appearing approximately 15 meV below this line is assigned to donor-acceptor recombination. The origin of an additional “moving” peak observed for higher Sb mole fraction x is tentatively attributed to quasi-donor-acceptor-recombination, arising from increased impurity/defect concentrations and a higher compensation ratio in the material. However, the unusual behaviour of this peak may also be ascribed to the presence of some degree of ordering in InAsSb. The exposure of a semiconductor to a hydrogen plasma usually leads to the passivation of shallow and deep centres, thereby removing their electrical and optical activity. In this study, the passivation and thermal stability of the native acceptor in p-type GaSb is also investigated. It is shown that this acceptor can be passivated, where after improvements in the electrical and optical properties of GaSb are observed. Upon annealing the passivated samples above 300 °C, the acceptor is reactivated.

On the growth and characterisation of AIGaN alloys for optoelectronic applications

- Description: In this study the growth and characterisation of undoped and Si-doped AlxGa1-xN has been performed. The layers were grown using low-pressure metalorganic vapour phase deposition (MOCVD) on sapphire substrates. The optical and electrical properties of the AlxGa1-xN layers were studied using variable temperature Hall effect and photoluminescence measurements. AlxGa1-xN layers were grown over the entire composition range. Room temperature ultraviolet (UV) transmission measurements showed that the material quality was very good for layers with an Al content, x, of 0 _ x _ 0.5. However, the quality of layers of higher composition was seen to rapidly decrease with increasing x. The electrical and optical properties of AlxGa1-xN with x < 0.5 were also good, comparable to those reported on in literature. The study of the Si-doping of AlxGa1-xN was performed in two parts; firstly a series of Al0.23Ga0.77N samples was grown in which the doping level was increased from zero to n _ 3 × 1018 cm-3. A similar, albeit a less rigorous, study was performed for Al0.41Ga0.59N and Al0.5Ga0.5N. A second series of samples was then grown in which the doping level was kept constant, while the Al content was incrementally increased. Room temperature Hall effect measurements performed on Si-doped Al0.23Ga0.77N showed that the electron concentration did not scale linearly with the silane flow, as was the case in GaN. It was also seen that the electron mobility of the layers increased with slight Si-doping, possibly due to an improvement in the crystalline quality and/or a change in the conduction mechanism. It was also found that at higher compositions (x = 0.41 and 0.50) an increase in the doping level resulted in an increase in the mobility. Variable temperature Hall effect and photoluminescence measurements, performed on the Al0.23Ga0.77N samples, revealed a good correlation between the first PL activation energy E1 and the donor activation energy ED, prompting the conclusion that the first PL recombination channel in AlxGa1-xN is due to the delocalisation of excitons bound at neutral Si donors. Furthermore, E1 and ED were seen to decrease with n1/3, as is the case for GaN and other semiconductor materials. It was also observed that strong exciton localisation occurs in slightly Si-doped material, with the amount of localization becoming less at higher doping levels. Possible mechanisms responsible for the second PL recombination channel of activation energy E2 were also proposed. The electrical and optical properties of the second set of AlxGa1-xN samples was then studied. The PL properties of undoped AlxGa1-xN were typical of a homogeneous alloy system, with the increase in the PL FWHM and exciton localisation energies with x following the trend predicted by alloy disorder theory. The variation of the band gap energy with the Al content could not, however, be fitted over the entire composition range using a single bowing parameter. It was proposed that this was due either to an effect of the 9 7 valence band crossover, or due to exciton localisation at alloy disorder and/or impurities. As was the case for GaN and Al0.23Ga0.77N, all undoped material was highly resistive. As was mentioned earlier, the exciton localisation energies increased according to alloy disorder theory in undoped AlxGa1-xN. In the doped samples, however, a large increase in the donor localisation energy was measured for x > 0.3. The possibility that Si could become a DX-centre in AlxGa1-xN was then investigated. However, Hall effect measurements showed that the Si activation energy increased in good agreement with the model of a shallow effective mass state donor, with no sudden increase in ED being observed up to x = 0.4. It was then suggested that the increase in the E1 and E2 activation energies, as well as the exciton localisation energies, could be due to the 9 7 valence band crossover, which occurs at roughly the same composition. However, due to the scarcity of reports on the valence band structure in AlxGa1-xN no conclusions could be made at this stage as to the effect of the 9 7 valence band crossover on the PL properties of AlxGa1-xN.

To assure the long-term survival of Telkom SA when moving into a competitive environment, the organisation must build a sustainable competitive advantage. In the face of increasingly fierce competition, the adoption of collaborative alliances between firms is becoming more and more common and the adoption of a world-class supply chain will be an ideal scenario for Telkom SA. A worldclass supply chain goes beyond the scope of the internal operations of an organisation, therefore the material distribution process was chosen for this study, which involved the internal operations in the organisation. The study included the availability of material up to the transportation of the material to the staging areas. The aim of this research was to identify the inefficiencies of the material distribution process of the Southern Region of Telkom SA to become worldclass. A quantitative technique was used to identify the inefficiencies. It was found that the availability and transportation of material were the inefficient categories, preventing the customer to receive the product or service on time. Communication, inaccurate forecasting and inefficient transportation of material were some of the reasons for not delivering material on time. Some of the recommendations included developing a model that could overcome the current inefficiencies in transportation, improving the communication channels, training and the development of employees at all levels.

- Description: The perceptions of both students and teachers are vital to improve performance and to ensure a positive teaching and learning climate at a college. This study examines the perceptions of staff at three recently merged campuses and students regarding student performance. The research focuses specifically on the performance of students registered for the Small Business Management N3 and NSC (National Senior Certificate) curriculum. A combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods was employed to investigate the desired result. Staff teaching the subject (Small Business Management) were given semi-structured interviews, while students who are currently studying the subject were given questionnaires to complete. Data was collected and analysed. This study reveals amongst other findings that management in FET institutions needs to take cognisance of the perceptions of staff and students regarding the improvement of student performance. Opinions, attitudes, insights and recommendations expressed concerning student performance can help institutions improve their culture of teaching and learning.

- Description: The perceptions of both students and teachers are vital to improve performance and to ensure a positive teaching and learning climate at a college. This study examines the perceptions of staff at three recently merged campuses and students regarding student performance. The research focuses specifically on the performance of students registered for the Small Business Management N3 and NSC (National Senior Certificate) curriculum. A combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods was employed to investigate the desired result. Staff teaching the subject (Small Business Management) were given semi-structured interviews, while students who are currently studying the subject were given questionnaires to complete. Data was collected and analysed. - Description: This study aims to discover the meaning that primary school children place on the loss of a parent and the impact it has on the children’s lives. As it is an emotive topic, and because of the difficulties of interviewing children, qualitative techniques of research data collection are considered the most appropriate. The study will explore, discover and describe children’s personal experiences of loss in a phenomenological and contextual manner. The sample in the study will be selected according to non-probability and purposive sampling techniques. Because children are being interviewed, the researcher will ethically approach gatekeepers for permission, and gain their informed consent. Data will be collected using semi-structured interviews, in which the researcher will interact with the interviewees in a natural setting. Data analysis will be done according to Tesch’s eight steps for analysing qualitative research data (Creswell, 1994:155). Once this process has been completed, the data will be verified against the four criteria that Guba (in Krefting, 1991:214-222) developed for testing the trustworthiness of qualitative research findings. The results of the study, as well as conclusions and recommendations drawn from the data, will be disseminated by means of a written report.
