- Description: Statistics anxiety is a well-documented phenomenon amongst students which is a result of negative attitudes towards Statistics. This is especially prevalent in the Social Sciences with Psychology students, where research indicates a relationship between attitudes and achievement in Statistics courses. This research project aimed to investigate this relationship. My study took the form of a meta-analysis comparing Psychology students’ attitudes towards statistics using the SATS, to their achievement in statistics/quantitative research methods courses. Results indicated a statistically significant relationship between the attitudes of Psychology students (r = 0.226, p is less than 0.05), quantified by their reported Affect, self-perceived Cognitive Competence, measure of Value and degree of Difficulty of Statistics, and their subsequent achievement in Statistics. The strongest correlations were noted for Affect (r = 0.247, p is less than 0.005) and Cognitive Competence (r = 0.29, p is less than 0.005) SATS scores. Heterogeneity was noted in Affect (I² = 30.998%) and Difficulty (I² = 54.248%). The study possessed limitations in the integration of other factors into the meta-analysis, availability of studies, and understanding of meta-analysis. Future Statistics attitudes research should include achievement measurements for more investigation into this relationship. This research will hopefully lead to more support in both quantitative research design and statistical training for postgraduate Psychology students at Rhodes University.

A Systematic Review of Literature examining the efficacy and effectiveness of the Developmental, Individual-Difference, Relationship-Based Model (DIR)/Floortime intervention for pre-adolescent children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders in majority world countries
- Authors: Hinz, Anja Stefanie
- Date: 2020
- Subjects: Psychology -- South Africa , Autism spectrum disorders -- Developing countries , Autism spectrum disorders -- Research -- Developing countries , Autism spectrum disorders in children , Autism in children -- Treatment , Play therapy , D.I.R.Floortime® , Systematic review
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Bachelor , BA(Honours)
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/185493 , vital:44391
- Description: The DIR/Floortime model focuses on the child as a holistic entity and views the treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders in much the same way, acknowledging that every child has a unique biological profile, with their own sensory, cognitive, and affective abilities and individual strengths and weaknesses. However, researchers have primarily conducted studies in minority world countries, and thus the results of previous research are not necessarily generalisable to majority world countries (see Appendix A). The objective of this systematic review was to consult published studies conducted in majority world countries to determine whether the DIR/Floortime interventions are effective and efficacious in the treatment of preadolescent children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders. As there is limited published literature on this topic, the methodological design of a systematic review was chosen, due to its ability to locate and highlight gaps in the literature for a specific topic. The findings highlight the need for more research to be conducted in other majority world countries and low-income and low-education families before determining whether the DIR/Floortime intervention is truly effective and efficacious in all majority world countries.

A Systematic Review of parent-adolescent interactions about sexuality in the African context
- Authors: Mfenyana, Anelisa
- Date: 2020
- Subjects: Psychology -- South Africa , Sex instruction for teenagers -- South Africa , Parent and teenager -- South Africa , Teenagers -- Sexual behavior -- South Africa , HIV infections -- Prevention , HIV (Viruses) -- South Africa , Communication and sex -- South Africa , Health risk communication -- South Africa , Systematic review
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Bachelor , BA(Honours)
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/185576 , vital:44400
- Description: Research Objective: to analyse knowledge that has been presented in recently published articles on parent-adolescent sexuality interactions in the African context. Methods: The research is undertaken through a systematic review, using a specific Boolean search in the EBSCOhost database. After the search and screening processes, 27 articles published between 2000 and 2020 were included in the review. Results: The dominant theme across the reviewed papers was HIV in general and its prevention more specifically. This over-riding theme is dealt with accordingly to four main sub-themes, namely: parents’ and adolescents’ knowledge about HIV/AIDs; sexuality communication between parents and adolescents; the association between the aforementioned communication and adolescent sexual behaviour; and the effectiveness of numerous specific HIV prevention interventions. The vast majority of the reviewed papers use a mainstream theoretical framework and utilise quantitative research methods. Their findings and recommendations are in line with mainstream hypotheses and assertions about HIV prevention. Conclusions: Strong global institutional forces and power relations generate the mainstream knowledge contained in the published work considered in this review, and that this knowledge in turn further entrenches these power relations. It would be useful to conceptualise the dimensions and implications of an alternative, critical approach to HIV prevention and parent-adolescent sexuality communication as well as a more comprehensive approach to sexuality education (which includes more than knowledge transfer about preventing HIV).

Abortion counselling in South Africa: A systematic review of the research
- Authors: Hussey, Megan Rose
- Date: 2020
- Subjects: Psychology -- South Africa , Abortion counseling -- South Africa , Reproductive rights -- South Africa , Unplanned pregnancy -- South Africa , Contraception -- Failures -- South Africa , Abortion -- Moral and ethical aspects -- South Africa , Abortion -- Psychological aspects , Nurses -- Attitudes , Systematic review
- Language: English
- Type: Thesis , Bachelor , BA(Honours)
- Identifier: http://hdl.handle.net/10962/185598 , vital:44402
- Description: The purpose of this systematic review is to unearth themes, using a thematic analysis, from research written on abortion counselling in South Africa. The rationale behind this study is to contribute to a larger project that involves operationalizing guidelines for abortion counselling. Searches were conducted using Google scholar and Science Direct. A total of 17 articles were found to be of relevance to the study. Braun and Clarke’s thematic analysis was applied to these articles. Six broad themes arose from the data namely: experiences of women; nurses’ responses to abortion and objection to abortion services; failed contraception and repeat abortions; counselling methods: one size does not fit all; contextualizing abortion narratives and difficulties nurses face in implementing family planning. Overall, these themes were linked by a theme of ambiguity and contradiction in experiences. This was not only in-line with findings of other research in the field of abortion but further points to issues of standardization and deficits in abortion counselling guidelines. The lack of concrete guidelines may be linked with themes of nurses evaluating abortion seekers based on their own moral framework and values. Furthermore, deficits in counselling were found to be linked to barriers to access such as time constraints and structural issues. Lastly, counselling in almost all articles for analysis revealed that clinics and nurses treat counselling as synonymous with information sharing. This underlines that counselling guidelines are ambiguous and vague causing confusion between the difference between mandatory information sharing and non-mandatory counselling.

- Description: The discipline of psychology, and the profession of clinical psychology in South Africa has made marked strides over the nearly 30 years since the end of the apartheid era. However, there is little known about the professional identity and experiences of clinical psychologists in South Africa. This study involved conducting a critical incident analysis of the experiences of 410 clinical psychologists in South Africa, in order to identify possible commonality in experiences and what meaning these experiences have for the professional identity of clinical psychologists in South Africa. Findings suggest that professional identity is greatly influenced by experiences involving interactions with mental health care users, and experiences working within multidisciplinary teams. These findings are discussed in connection with existing literature that details concepts of professional identity and South African psychology, in order to establish clarity on the professional identity of clinical psychologists in South Africa.

- Description: Objective: This project aims to study alcohol consumption patterns of female University students at Rhodes University in South Africa. Method: Online survey completed by 503 first-year female and male students in 2015; the survey had demographic questions, AUDIT, and 9 item Drinking Context Scale. Quantitative analysis using independent t-test and chi-square test was used to find statistical significance in gender differences. Results: There are more women alcohol abstainers than men. Of the women who drink, a higher proportion of them drink more hazardously than men. The main consequence of Heavy Episodic Drinking (HED) in women is negative emotions after drinking, however, the overall consequence score of drinking for women and men is not the same. Additionally, men are statistically more likely to drink beer more than women and there is a low significant association between more women drinking wine than males. There is a low significant correlation between higher pocket money women get and high AUDIT Consumption score. Women are most likely going to drink excessively in social events with people they trust but are least likely to drink like that with their intimate partners or using alcohol to cope with negative emotions. Conclusions: Women engage in a lot of binge drinking at social gatherings with close friends and then regret the event after the festivities, thus healthier convivial drinking habits must be encouraged.

- Description: For most individuals work is an integral part of life that serves the dual purpose of safeguarding survival and contributing to their self-defining process. However, through the ages society has created a clear division of what constitutes good and bad work (dirty work). This paper aims to locate gender equality in the discourse of what has been termed dirty work. It will argue that whilst we have made formidable strides in the equality of the sexes in the workplace, we must undoubtedly acknowledge that we still have a lot of work cut out for us. Ultimately, it is my aim to produce a systematic literature review that argues that this rings particularly true in the context of dirty work. It will therefore attempt to formulate a comprehensive understanding of the effect of being a woman in occupations that are marginalized and looked down upon by society. It will identify the gaps that need to be addressed through reviewing literature regarding gender and dirty work.

- Description: In recent years, research has shown that cognitive decline occurs in patients living with HIV and studies have brought into light the different treatment interventions are available to prevent the rapid decline of cognitive functioning in these individuals. Thus, it is crucial that the effect that treatment interventions on the executive function of HIV patients is studied. One such intervention is brain plasticity. Through understanding the model of brain plasticity following traumatic brain injury, and applying cognitive rehabilitation as a method of treatment, researchers believe that it is possible to ameliorate the cognitive deficits. In the present times, access to pharmaceutical treatments like antiretroviral treatment has been more accessible to persons living with HIV, however studies continue to show that as the virus progresses into its severe stages, even with the consistent use of antiretroviral treatment, cognitive domains such the executive function domain continue to become compromised. This means that the individual living with HIV will begin to show deficits in attention levels, memory and important thinking abilities as the virus spreads throughout the central nervous system. This study provides a meta-analysis wherein an array of scholarly articles have been used to measure the efficacy that the model of brain plasticity and the application of cognitive rehabilitation therapy has on the executive function of HIV patients. The findings show improvement in the attention span, cognitive flexibility, processing speed, inhibition, and working memory levels of patients living with HIV after the implementation of cognitive rehabilitation intervention.

- Description: Youth in South Africa experience significant sexual and reproductive health problems, including high rates of STIs, HIV, unwanted pregnancy and sexual violence. Life Orientation (LO) sexuality education has been identified as crucial in promoting young people’s well-being and equipping them to manage their sexual and reproductive lives in healthy ways. In this systematic review, a thematic analysis was conducted on 17 articles to identify and explore what themes were present in relation to the attitudes of educators in delivering sexuality education through LO and the influence of LO on youth attitudes to sex and sexuality. Of the 17 articles reviewed, six themes were identified and discussed. The findings highlight various shortcomings of LO in providing effective sexuality education and barriers that should be addressed to improve sexuality education in South Africa. To conclude, research that focuses on the attitudes of LO educators is important in order to identify areas in which they require increased support. In addition, research needs to continue to focus on the attitudes and experiences of youth through their own voices and perspectives in order to understand how sexuality education can meet their needs.

- Description: An icon is more than an image. It is a "sacramental form of presence" that makes present that which it signifies (Evdokimov 1976: 167). To come before an icon is to come before the presence of God. To gaze at an icon is to pray. Rublev's Holy Trinity icon (see frontispiece) is a theology in colour. Inspired by the story in Genesis 18, the icon depicts the three hypostases of the Trinity sitting around an altar with a chalice placed on top. The Biblical story is an account of the genuine hospitality that Abraham and Sarah shared with three pilgrims. This theme of hospitality is expressed by the three hypostases in the icon who invite the cosmos to share in their love-life. This research project investigates aspects of the spiritual significance that Rublev's icon has on our Christian living. To this end, an interpretation of the icon is offered in chapter two. Chapter three focuses on the relationship among the three hypostases in the icon. This chapter reflects on the meaning that trinitarian pericheresis could have on our spiritual living in the way we develop our relationships and the type of church and socio-political structures we adopt and support. The research project also explores the meaning that Rublev's icon could have for Methodists. The resource that Wesleyan spirituality offers to those who seek a deepened spirituality is the doctrine of Christian perfection. Perfection, in the Wesleyan model, is sought through the means of grace, nurtured through Christian koinonia and evidenced in social transformation. Christian perfection is discussed with reference to Rublev's icon in chapter four. Chapter five summarises aspects of the spirituality of the icon, postulates some implications that the icon has and unravels key issues arising out of this study.

A study of the concept of the church in the Pauline Corpus and in Luke-Acts with special reference to the reasons for differences in their understanding

- Description: This essay consists of six chapters with an introduction and conclusion. INTRODUCTION: The introduction sets out the scope of the essay and states the methodology that is followed. CHAPTER I: THE PEOPLE OF GOD. This and the next two chapters deal with the Pauline conception of the Church. This chapter deals in particular with Paul's understanding of the continuity of the Church with Israel. The Old 'Testament terms and types that Paul uses are examined and their new application to the Church noted. The Church is examined as the "people of God", the "ekklesia" the "saints", the "elect" and the "temple of the Holy Spirit". CHAPTER II: THE WHOLE CHRIST. This chapter deals with the understanding of the Church as being "in Christ", as being "with Christ" in his redemptive acts. Here the close union between Christ and the Christian is examined, especially as it is conveyed by the "local" understanding of "in Christ" and the Christians' participation "with Christ" in baptism. The term fellowship (Koinonia) is also examined. The chapter concludes that Paul regards Christians as being "solid" with Christ. CHAPTER III: THE BODY OF CHRIST. Here the corporate understanding of the Church as the Body of Christ is examined. After a brief survey of various theories of origin it is suggested that the formula and concept itself was an original Pauline formulation. The "body of Christ" is closely identified with the actual redemptive acts, but it is exceeding the figures usage to regard the Church under this figure as the Iiteral physical body of Christ. While the term is used metaphorically, it is yet more than a metaphor. It expresses the corporate nature of the Christian Church, in its union with Christ. CHAPTER IV: LUKE, JESUS AND THE COMMUNITY. This chapter looks at Luke's treatment of Jesus' purpose. It seeks to answer the question as to whether Jesus intended to found a community. The question of eschatology and its relationship to the Lukan concept of the Church is examined. It is shown that Luke did have an interest in eschatology and that this did not prevent him conceiving of Jesus' founding a community. CHAPTER V: THE RESTORATION OF THE PEOPLE OF GOD (ISRAEL). We see in this chapter that Luke has an unique ecclesiology. For he does conceive of a Church, but one that is essentially Jewish, in fact the restored Israel. Luke only envisages one Israel, from which unbelieving Jews are cut off. This Israel, as part of its restoration, comprehends within itself both the Samaritans (who are viewed by Luke more as Jews than non-Jews) and the Gentiles. CHAPTER VI: THE APOSTLES, THE HOLY SPIRIT AND THE COMMUNITY. The Apostles are regarded by Luke as the regents of the restored Israel, not really as the guarantors of a Jesus tradition or as the first ecclesiastical officials. As such they are instrumental in showing the Church's continuity with Israel and the events of Jesus' Resurrection and Ascension. They are vital for the Lukan conception of the restoration of Israel. When this is done by the inclusion of believing Jews, Samaritans and Gentiles, they disappear from Luke's account. The Holy Spirit is viewed as Jesus' gift to the Church, which guides it into an understanding of its universal nature. The Holy Spirit is seen as essential in Christian initiation. Participation in the Holy Spirit, together with the Church's common origin, give the Church its unity and life. CONCLUSION. The conclusion sums up the Lukan and the Pauline concepts of the Church, noting both their similarities and the points wherein they differ. Reasons are advanced for these differences.

The eucharist in St John's Gospel : an examination of the extent to which it is justifiable to see allusions to the eucharist in St John's Gospel

- Description: This thesis shows that the incarnation of Jesus Christ is an ever present reality for St. John. Christ's abiding presence is known to those who are committed to him because he is their Saviour and Lord. This presence is especially real when his disciples, the believers, the Church gather for worship. In the eucharist, which is an act of worship, the meaning and purpose of the incarnation becomes apparent for St. Paul. By showing that aspects of John's understanding of the incarnation co-incide with the early Church's doctrine of eucharist (as portrayed by St. Paul) the conclusion is reached that we have eucharistic allusions in the gospel of John. Furthermore, John presents Jesus in contrast to the Old Covenant. Jesus supersedes the Old Covenant and establishes the new covenant of love. Just as the Old Covenant was celebrated in the Passover, so the eucharist re-enacts the new covenant. By alluding to the old sacrament, John shows how the eucharist fulfils the true meaning of Passover. After a brief examination of existing methodologies, I present the working hypothesis for this dissertation as outlined above. In a fairly detailed exegesis of Jn 6 (with digressions to other relevant passages in John) which is divided into three sections (In 6:1-21 6:22-48, 6:49-71), I have tried to show that John sees the eucharist as a celebration which emphasises the community of the church, which re-enacts God's great demonstration of love (typified especially in the death of Jesus) and which foreshadows that great heavenly banquet, when, all will be gathered to him. I reach the conclusion therefore that we are justified in finding allusions in the eucharist in the gospel of John.

- Description: Conclusion: The [Abrahamic] stories reveal a man caught up in the struggle of faith. But the God who took the initiative in establishing the Covenant shows that in spite of first appearances, He is faithful. The stories present various pictures of Abraham as a Covenant Mediator. Because he is in a sense Israel in microcosm it is not strange that he is described in the terms of Israel's most important institutions: prophet, priest, and king. Nevertheless the most significant Sitz im Leben is the family. While he is usually meant to be understood as an individual representing his immediate family, his descendants, and even all nations, at times, because he is the founding ancestor of Israel and therefore Israel in microcosm, he is best understood as a "Corporate Person". He and Israel are to be a source of blessing to the nations.

A comparison between the views of Jonathan Edwards and John Wesley regarding the sovereignty of God

- Description: The views of Edwards and Wesley regarding the sovereignty of God present a puzzle. On the face of things, both were successful evangelists while both held contrary doctrines of sovereignty. Does this mean that the doctrine of sovereignty is irrelevant? This thesis argues that the doctrine of sovereignty is crucial in evangelism and revival, and that the views of Edwards and Wesley regarding the sovereignity of God were in fact very similar. A useful framework for showing this is the Five Points of Calvinism, as well as the doctrines of justification by faith and the omnipotence of God.

Attitude and personal orientation differences between clergy of Anglican and Pentecostal denominations with particular reference to sexual ethics

- Description: The introduction provides a concise discussion of the confused condition of our Western sexuality. It is noted that this confusion has also manifested itself in ecclesiastical circles, and that the contribution of the church towards the resolution of 'moral' confusion in this sphere is in fact minimal. The study then proceeds to a more empirical investigation of certain phenomena which might enable us to demonstrate the close relationship which exists between the individual's psychological condition, or 'state of consciousness', and the type of theology or ethics he formulates or adopts. The present study was an investigation designed to determine whether Anglican clergy and Pentecostal pastors differed significantly with regard to theological orientation, level of self-actualization or the degree of flexibility they showed in the application of sexual values. Furthermore we were concerned to discover the inter-relation between these various traits. A third group of ordinands from St. Paul's College (C.P.S.A.) was also incorporated into the study. All forty eight subjects completed a series of tests and questionnaires which were scored according to eighteen different scales relating to selfactualzing traits, theological orientation and the application of sexual ethics. In brief the results showed that the Anglican clergy were significantly more self-actualizing, theologically liberal and more flexible in the application of sexual values than were Pentecostal pastors. Little difference was found to exist as a function of age and education, or between Anglican clergy and ordinands. Furthermore theological conservatism, general conservatism, dogmatism and inflexibility in the application of sexual ethics were all shown to correlate negatively with self-actualization. In the discussion of results the writer attempted to demonstrate the close relationship between the churchman's psychological make-up and the way in which he construes his world and formulates his theology and ethics. In the concluding discussion the writer once again widened the scope of concern in order to demonstrate how the findings of the present study can be fitted into the broader context of the life of the church. It has been suggested that the type of approach adopted by churchmen to problems of sexuality is very much determined by their psychological make up. Hence in this sense both the status of the church in modern society and the degree to which the church can assist in the resolution of our culture's problems in the field of human sexuality, is greatly dependent upon the 'states of consciousness' of our clergy.

The holy spirit in the theology of St. Luke

- Description: The essay consists of five main chapters with an introduction and conclusion. This defines the limits of the essay and explains the methodology employed. These chapters are examined particularly with reference to the Spirit as the agent of fulfillment of the old, and the inaugurator of the new. 'The main text examined is Lk. 1.35. The Spirit is shown to be also used in a skillful linking and differentiation of John the Baptist and Jesus. Through a fairly detailed synoptic comparison, the peculiarly Lukan emphasis is brought to light. The Baptism is linked with 1.35 and the Transfiguration. Again both the Baptism and Temptation are shown to be seen in the light of the fulfillment of the Old Covenant. All the lines of fulfilment join together in the Spirit's descent on Jesus. The immediate result of this is the testing of his Messiahship, and Proclamation in the synagogue of Nazareth. This proclamation is coupled with the Luken rejection motif. The Spirit is seen to be especially involved in Jesus' ministries of exorcism and healing, but also in his preaching and teaching. The position of Lk 4.18-19 is seen to be of great importance. The main problem is the lack of specific reference to the Spirit. This is resolved in similar fashion to the question of the Messianic Secret. The relation of the apostles to the spirit is also discussed, since this is relevant to the ministry of the Church. Firstly the relation between the Transfiguration and Ascension is examined. This points to the fundamental centrality of the Ascension in Luke's theology. Pentecost is then seen as the fulfilling of the Ascension in the Church. Secondly, as a minor theme, the resurrection appearances are looked into and the similarities with Johannine thought are noted. This raises the question of the historicity of the Lukan schematization. In the examination of Pentecost itself the problem of the quotation from Joel and also the relation of Pentecost to the founding of the Church and the Gentile mission are raised. The Spirit is revealed to be active in two main areas : (1) the mission of the Church in evangelization - this is especialy seen in the areas of preaching, miracles and the life of the Church ; (2) the establishing and justification of the Gentile mission - this overriding concern is shown to obscure the other functions of the Spirit especially in the realm of Baptism and the Christian life of the individual. Thus Luke's historical sense is seen to be coupled with a theological desire to justify and bolster the Gentile mission. This draws out the various conclusions within the essay. The question of 'salvation-history' is raised and a solution found in terms of Luke's use of the Spirit. In broad outline the schema of Conzelmann is accepted. The Lukan eschatology is mentioned in an attempt to find a solution to questions raised by the comparison of Luke with Paul and John. This comparison is only meant to place the main conclusions of the essay within the context of the wider New Testament.

The nature of the community of the Dead Sea scrolls (with particular reference to the manual of discipline) and its relation to the church of the New Testament
- Authors: Draper, Jonathan A
- Date: 1977
- Subjects: Dead Sea scrolls Dead Sea scrolls -- Criticism, interpretation, etc. Apocalyptic literature -- History and criticism Qumran community

- Description: The scope of our examination of the ideas and beliefs of the Qumran sect and the Church of the New Testament is limited to what contributes to our understanding of the nature of the respective communities. No attempt is made to present a full theological examination of the concepts which arise. The aim is not an exhaustive treatment, but rather to suggest areas where the beliefs of the communities throw light on each other. Our method is to begin by establishing the beliefs of the Qumran sect in each case, with particular reference to the Manual of Discipline, and then comparing this with the corresponding concept in the New Testament. This avoids the danger of reading back later Christian ideas into our treatment of the Scrolls. In our examination of the New Testament texts, we shall not assume that they constitute a unity nor that they can be taken at face value, but that they bear the marks of the interests of the early Church and of the conflicting tendencies and practices which marked its development. Consequently the tools of Form, Source and Redaction Criticism are utilized where they can contribute to our purpose. Chapter 1, p. vi.
