  • Description: The song is in praise of a man who has many lovers. This song and the following one were sung by a group of very beautifully dressed young people, the men dancers elegantly blanketed and beaded, the girls wearing pale ochre skirts with many rows of indigo blue braid and their headcloths of indingo blie wool were folded about their heads to form a tall tubular headdress rather like that of Queen Nefertiti. Before the recording started, but whilst the singers were "warming up" there was rather a curious little ceremony which forms part of the dance. One of the girls went around removing the men dancers's headcloths revealing their head bead ornaments. She put their headcloths on her own head, then returned to the line of girls and gave each girl her own young mans' headcloth, which was then tied round the girl's head. A stick specially decorated for dancing is called "Libunguza." Intolombe dance for young people with clapping.

The dancing was static, done by the mwn only, who used a single stamping step, but very stlised elegant gestures of arms and hands. They were holding decorated sticks. One man held up the two end corners of his blanket-skirt. His forearms were solidly encased in brass wire bracelets from wrist to elbow. Intlombe dances for young people with clapping.

  • Description: The girls who sang this song belonged to a group in the community half way between the sophisticated christians who have been to school and broken away from their background, and the so-called "Red blanket people", those who retain their African religion and customs including the red ochre coloured blankets, cosmetics and beads. They have been to school for a short while, wear European style clothes as far as possible and while falling short of the standards of the better educated consider themselves above and apart from the 'reds' who although 'un-schooled' are elegant in their traditional dress and beadwork.   • Description: This song was recorded by moonlight by a very gay and picturesquely dressed group of Xhosa people, young and old men and women. The garments were of pale ochre and yellow and many men and women were smoking pipes of great length, both bowl and stem. Clothes, tobacco pauches and necklaces all beautifully beaded. During the course of this song the owner of the nearest house shouted out: "Should not the owner of this place be paid?" When his voice came out loud and clear in the playback, all the people burst out laughing and he vanished amongst the crowd covered with embrrassment. Song for Mhlahlo dance, with clapping.

  • Description: This was a version of the dance often seen on the mines in Johannesburg where it is known as "Amakwenkwe." It is remarkable for two things. The strange guttural roaring made by flexing and unflexing the knee of the leg on which they happen to be standing. Bands of small bells worn across the chest make this peculiar feat audible as well as visible. The legs of the dancers are also shaken or made to quiver, as they walk round and on the mines the dancers wear rattles on their legs as well. Mbayizelo dance, with clapping and bells.
