- Description: Since the adoption and implementation of the South African Schools Act of (1996), School Governing Bodies (SGBs) have been provided with the powers to recommend the employment of teachers in schools. Moreover, SGBs are also required to have an impact on the promotion of diversity in schools through the employment of teachers in a non-discriminatory way. However, two decades since SASA of 1996, Foundation Phase teaching remains dominated by females. Literature in the South African context posits that gendered schooling practices still exist in the differentiated opportunities of the employment of teachers. Particularly male teachers eager to teach in the foundation phase in the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and North West Province. The study sought to explore the perceptions of SGB members towards foundation phase male teachers in the Eastern Cape schools. This study employed Participatory Visual Research Methodologies (PVRM), as its research design and was underpinned by the critical paradigm. It utilised a participatory method, collages and a focus group discussion to generate data with five SGB members from three purposively selected schools in the Eastern Cape. The study utilised a feminist post-structural theory in the analysis of findings. The findings revealed three themes, which are; (1) Males are not seen as good caregivers, (2) Foundation phase male teachers are seen as multifaceted and lastly (3) Male teachers are seen as not suitable for Foundation Phase teaching. Each of the above findings offers recommendations to the following stakeholders, the Department of Basic Education (DBE), Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and for future research.

Studies have proven that national cultures play an important role on the nature and extent of user disclosure (Krasnova & Veltri, 2010; Lewis, Kaufman, & Christakis, 2008). However, no similar research has been undertaken in South Africa, and currently we do not understand South African SNS users’ self-disclosure behaviour in terms of the privacy calculus theory. The primary objective of this study is to understand the perceptions of South African SNS’S users regarding the perceived benefits, costs, moderating factors and self-disclosure, using the Privacy Calculus Theory. To achieve this objective, we initially undertook a detailed literature review to understand the concept of information privacy, privacy calculus, information privacy policy and legal framework, SNS’S and self-disclosure and the various factors affecting self-disclosure. We then proceeded to validate the theoretical framework by collecting data from two South African universities, namely the Nelson Mandela University (NMU) and Walter Sisulu University (WSU (NMD Campus – Former University of Transkei)), by adopting the same methodology and instrument used in the original study (and the isiXhosa translation). The theoretical framework used for this study is based on the Privacy Calculus theory, which argues that users conduct a cost-benefit calculus before deciding to self-disclose their personal information. This analysis is further influenced by other moderating factors like trust, control and awareness. All these factors have been incorporated into the theoretical framework and the instrument, adapted from the original research was used to collect data from the participants. The data from 239 respondents, who finally qualified for analysis was collated and proceeded with the analysis of that data. The data was analysed in four stages using established statistical tests. The first three phases were used to determine the actual value placed by the users on selfdisclosure, its determinants and moderating factors, and the last phase concentrated on how each of the constructs included in the theoretical framework influenced the other constructs. The results obtained from the analysis provided valuable insights into the self-disclosure behaviour of South African SNS’S users. Entertainment was the primary benefit the students derived from using SNS like Facebook, followed by relationship maintenance and those who enjoyed the platform more tended to Self-Disclose more. Those who tended to derive more benefits from the platform were found to trust the platform and the other users of the network. The theoretical framework was validated and it was determined that privacy paradox exists within the South African SNS’S user community, meaning that even with high privacy concerns, these SNS users are willing to self-disclose their personal information.

Exploring the psychosocial effects of removing teenagers from their homes to places of safety

- Description: The child welfare system investigate over 2 Million children each year for parental abuse or neglect, yet little is known about the psychosocial effects of removing teenagers from their homes and placing them in the place of safety. Although an abusive family would undoubtedly be harmful to children, removing a child from his or her family can be just as traumatic. Long term outcome are rarely observed, and teenagers placed in the place of safety are likely differ from those not placed. Hence this study took a microscopic scrutiny at the effects of the teenager`s removal from their home environment to a place of safety. In carrying out this research qualitative method of data collection was used. The study outlined the factors that lead to removal of teenagers from their home environment to the place of safety. The study found that some of the teenagers who were removed from their home environment were due to poverty, maltreatment, negligence and child abuse at home. The study also revealed that the placement of the teenagers in the places of safety expose the teenagers to psychological, physical, emotional and behavioural negative experiences. The teenagers that participated in the study mentioned that they are stigmatised by the community and peers at school, some also cited that they have lost contact with their families. It was also found out that; the professionals who participated in the study also too experience some challenges in rendering services to the teenagers as sometimes they don`t get informed about the children`s situation on their arrival in the centre. On the other hand, another professional declared that they are trying by all means to cater for all the needs of the children, but they are failed by the case managers and other stakeholders, such as department of social development who delay the process of obtaining court orders which makes it difficult for the child to be funded and also the process of reunifying the child with the biological family.

A guiding policy was developed and endorsed in 2014, but still excludes how these human resources functions are to be decentralised. Centralised human resources services is an impediment in the transformation process of improved health care services for the Basotho Nation (Morgan–Javis, 2015).Ulrich’s (1998) HR model formed the theoretical model of study.This study aimed to explore how the Human Resources (HR) functions support the decentralisation in the Ministry of Health. Exploring working with Grade 6 Elementary Agricultural Science teachers on how to integrate local knowledge in food preservation

- Description: Many scholars have reported that science teachers are grappling with linking science to learners’ everyday life experiences and Namibian science teachers are no exception. As a result, learners are finding that scientific concepts often remain decontextualised and abstract. In light of this, the Namibian National Curriculum indicates that teaching and learning should start with the knowledge and experiences of learners from home. It also encourages teachers to integrate local knowledge into their science lessons but does not give proper guidelines on how science teachers should go about enacting this. This tension between curriculum formulation and implementation triggered my interest to carry out an interventionist research study aimed at exploring working with Grade 6 Elementary Agricultural Science teachers on how to integrate local knowledge on food preservation in particular. This study is underpinned by an interpretive paradigm, within which a qualitative case study was employed. It was conducted with three Grade 6 Elementary Agricultural Science teachers from three different schools in the Oshana region of Namibia. I used semi-structured interviews, document analysis, workshop discussions, participatory observation and reflections to gather data. Vygotsky’s socio-cultural theory together with Shulman’s pedagogical content knowledge theories was used as lenses to analyse my data. The findings of the study revealed that the sample teachers understood what indigenous knowledge is and its benefits but struggled to integrate it in their lessons. The findings of the study further revealed that the presentations by the expert community members enabled these teachers to identify possible science topics that they could teach, using some of the traditional practices such as food preservation. The study thus recommends that teachers need to be supported on how to integrate local knowledge or indigenous knowledge in their classrooms. Teachers should therefore be involved in professional learning communities that will help them share their difficulties they encounter during their teaching practices and to collaboratively come up with strategies to overcome such difficulties. Community members who are custodians of the cultural heritage should be invited to share their indigenous knowledge with science teachers so that they can link it from community members to classroom science.

Extraction, Isolation and Biological studies of Pentanisia prunelloides and Hippobromus pauciflorus

- Description: Enormous amounts of drugs or drug components have been found with the use and help of ethnobotanical knowledge of plants by the indigenous civilisation of that region. The primary reason that plants are chosen as a potential source of new medicines is that they are readily available to researcher and the public either free of charge or at a low and affordable cost in the rural majority community in the developing world. The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical content of two commonly used medicinal plants of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa and to explore their antioxidant potential. Crude extracts of Hippobromus pauciflorus and Pentanisia prunelloides were obtained by means of sequential solvent extraction followed by evaluation of the phenolic and flavonoid content of extracts and the anti-oxidant ability of the both plant samples and also their ability to hinder lipid peroxidation. For the H.pauciflorus sample, different masses of crude extracts were obtained with Dichloromethane (0.817 g) yielding the smallest mass and the 70% Ethanol (120.196 g) extract yielding the largest mass. The total phenolic content of the plant sample extracts were measured using the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent. The Methanol extract (133.019 ± 0.003 μgGAE/mL) exhibited the largest content while the EtOH extract (13.981 ± 0.001 μgGAE/mL) exhibited the least content. The MeOH extract exhibited the highest flavonoid content (46.005 ± 0.001 μgQE/mg extract) while the Hexane extract (19.000 ± 0.008 μgQE/mg extract) exhibited the least. 4 Final Submission of Thesis, Dissertation or Research Report/Project, Conference or Exam Paper Frap assay was performed with the Ethyl Acetate extract displaying the least anti-oxidant ability (10.284 ± 0.014 AAE/mL) while the Hex extract (204.705 ± 0.119 AAE/mL) displayed the highest anti-oxidant ability. 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay was performed with the hexane, methanol and ethanol extracts exhibiting an anti-oxidant property with IC50 values of 3.594x10-3 ± 0.133 mg/mL, 0.185 ± 0.019 mg/mL and 0.011 ± 0.002 mg/mL respectively. Inhibition of lipid peroxidation at 150 μg/mL was performed where the Dichloromethane extract showed the highest inhibition percentage (-75.000 ± 0.119%) while the Hex extract (-41.667 ± 0.021005%) showed the lowest inhibition percentage at 300 μg/mL; only the DCM extract (-3.051 ± 0.018%) displayed inhibition ability. For the P.prunelloides sample, different masses of crude extracts were obtained with EA extract (0.348 g) yielding the smallest mass and the MeOH (47.941 g) extract yielding the largest mass. Phenolic content was evaluated with the DCM extract (122.827 ± 0.010 μgGAE/mL) exhibited the largest content while the MeOH extract (48.788 ± 0.001 μgGAE/mL) exhibited the least content. Flavonoid content was evaluated with the DCM extract (88.543 ± 0.005 μgQE/mg extract) exhibited the largest content while the EtOH extract (19.254 ± 0.001 μgQE/mg extract) exhibited the least content. FRAP assay was performed with the DCM extract (13.021 ± 0.008 AAE/mL) displaying the least anti-oxidant ability while the MeOH extract (217.758 ± 0.025 AAE/mL) displaying the highest anti-oxidant ability. DPPH assay was conducted with EA and methanol extracts exhibiting antianti-oxidant ability and having IC50 values of 0.579 ± 0.021 mg/mL and 0.006± 0.001 mg/mL respectively. Inhibition of lipid peroxidation at 150 μg/mL was performed with the n-Hex extract (-36.395 ± 0.015%) showing the highest inhibition percentage while the DCM extract (-17.647 ± 0.005%) the lowest and at 300μg/mL the EA (- 12.881 ± 0.018%) and DCM (-0.847 ± 0.009%) extracts displayed inhibition. - Description: Enormous amounts of drugs or drug components have been found with the use and help of ethnobotanical knowledge of plants by the indigenous civilisation of that region. The primary reason that plants are chosen as a potential source of new medicines is that they are readily available to researcher and the public either free of charge or at a low and affordable cost in the rural majority community in the developing world. The aim of this study was to evaluate the chemical content of two commonly used medicinal plants of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa and to explore their antioxidant potential. Crude extracts of Hippobromus pauciflorus and Pentanisia prunelloides were obtained by means of sequential solvent extraction followed by evaluation of the phenolic and flavonoid content of extracts and the anti-oxidant ability of the both plant samples and also their ability to hinder lipid peroxidation. For the H.pauciflorus sample, different masses of crude extracts were obtained with Dichloromethane (0.817 g) yielding the smallest mass and the 70% Ethanol (120.196 g) extract yielding the largest mass. The total phenolic content of the plant sample extracts were measured using the Folin-Ciocalteau reagent. The Methanol extract (133.019 ± 0.003 μgGAE/mL) exhibited the largest content while the EtOH extract (13.981 ± 0.001 μgGAE/mL) exhibited the least content. The MeOH extract exhibited the highest flavonoid content (46.005 ± 0.001 μgQE/mg extract) while the Hexane extract (19.000 ± 0.008 μgQE/mg extract) exhibited the least. 4 Final Submission of Thesis, Dissertation or Research Report/Project, Conference or Exam Paper Frap assay was performed with the Ethyl Acetate extract displaying the least anti-oxidant ability (10.284 ± 0.014 AAE/mL) while the Hex extract (204.705 ± 0.119 AAE/mL) displayed the highest anti-oxidant ability. 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay was performed with the hexane, methanol and ethanol extracts exhibiting an anti-oxidant property with IC50 values of 3.594x10-3 ± 0.133 mg/mL, 0.185 ± 0.019 mg/mL and 0.011 ± 0.002 mg/mL respectively. Inhibition of lipid peroxidation at 150 μg/mL was performed where the Dichloromethane extract showed the highest inhibition percentage (-75.000 ± 0.119%) while the Hex extract (-41.667 ± 0.021005%) showed the lowest inhibition percentage at 300 μg/mL; only the DCM extract (-3.051 ± 0.018%) displayed inhibition ability. For the P.prunelloides sample, different masses of crude extracts were obtained with EA extract (0.348 g) yielding the smallest mass and the MeOH (47.941 g) extract yielding the largest mass. Phenolic content was evaluated with the DCM extract (122.827 ± 0.010 μgGAE/mL) exhibited the largest content while the MeOH extract (48.788 ± 0.001 μgGAE/mL) exhibited the least content. Flavonoid content was evaluated with the DCM extract (88.543 ± 0.005 μgQE/mg extract) exhibited the largest content while the EtOH extract (19.254 ± 0.001 μgQE/mg extract) exhibited the least content. FRAP assay was performed with the DCM extract (13.021 ± 0.008 AAE/mL) displaying the least anti-oxidant ability while the MeOH extract (217.758 ± 0.025 AAE/mL) displaying the highest anti-oxidant ability. DPPH assay was conducted with EA and methanol extracts exhibiting antianti-oxidant ability and having IC50 values of 0.579 ± 0.021 mg/mL and 0.006± 0.001 mg/mL respectively. Inhibition of lipid peroxidation at 150 μg/mL was performed with the n-Hex extract (-36.395 ± 0.015%) showing the highest inhibition percentage while the DCM extract (-17.647 ± 0.005%) the lowest and at 300μg/mL the EA (- 12.881 ± 0.018%) and DCM (-0.847 ± 0.009%) extracts displayed inhibition. Fabrication of a photocatalytic PAN supported C-TiO2-CFA nanocomposite for use in water treatment

The prepared nanocomposite (C-TiO2-CFA) was immobilized on poly(acrylonitrile) membrane to address the drawback of recovering the nanosized photocatalyst from water after photodegradation experiments. The C-TiO2-CFA nanocomposites were fabricated using a modified sol-gel method, while the C-TiO2-CFA/PAN membranes were prepared via the phase inversion technique. The nanocomposites were fully characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM-EDX, TEM, DRS, and BET surface area analysis. The prepared C-TiO2-CFA/PAN membranes were evaluated in the photodegradation of methyl orange and the golden yellow dyes, as well as the photoreduction of lead and cadmium heavy metals in synthetic wastewater. UV-Visible spectroscopy was used to follow the changes in the concentration of organic dyes, while inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy was used to follow changes in the concentration of the heavy metals. FTIR analysis confirmed the presence of functional groups expected on the prepared C-TiO2- CFA/PAN membranes and EDX analysis accounted for the elements expected. The prepared membranes all exhibited an asymmetric structure as depicted by cross-sectional view study via SEM analysis. TEM and SEM analyses revealed that the prepared C-TiO2-CFA nanocomposite was roughly spherical in shape with an estimate particle size of 10.94 nm according to TEM and 11.62 nm according to XRD using Scherrer equation. The incorporation of carbon into the lattice structure of titanium dioxide resulted in a reduction in bandgap from 3.19 eV to 2.78 eV through introduction of mid-band states, allowing visible light utilization. The best nanocomposite was obtained by doping TiO2 with 4% carbon and having a C-TiO2 to CFA ratio of 4:1 respectively. The C-TiO2-CFA nanocomposite exhibits a crystalline structure with a mixture of rutile and anatase phases. The parameters investigated in the evaluation of photocatalytic performance of C-TiO2- CFA/PAN were effect of photocatalyst load on PAN membrane, initial dye concentration, pH and light source in the activation of photocatalyst. For both dyes (methyl arrange and golden yellow), it was observed that photodegradation efficiencies increased with an increase in catalyst load. In the photodegradation of MO and GY using the membrane with 1% C-TiO2- CFA, removal efficiencies of 73.3% and 59.99% were attained respectively, while the membrane with 2% C-TiO2-CFA achieved MO and GY photodegradation efficiencies of 99.8% and 99.2% respectively. Photodegradation efficiencies of MO and GY were observed to decrease with an increase in dye concentration. Low pH (3) was observed to favour the photodegradation of MO and GY azo dyes. Photodegradation efficiencies of 99.8% and 99.2% were attained where obtained at lower MO and GY initial concentration. The modified photocatalyst (C-TiO2-CFA/PAN) exhibited better photoactivity under sunlight irradiation compared to strict UV light irradiation. Factors Affecting Archives and Records Management in The City of Johannesburg Municipality

The use of old records management strategies is posing serious challenges in most African countries and it is affecting the development of archives and records. Literature shows that most municipalities in Southern African countries have not adapted advance records management strategies like Integrated records management and Cloud systems for the realization of benefits of effectiveness and efficiency in records management. The history of Johannesburg municipality and the significance of records management in terms of leveraging effective service delivery raised critical concerns over the development of archives and records management. Proper management of records is the foundation of any government needs to provide services, to fulfil its obligation of accountability towards its citizens and protect their rights. According to the continuum model, the archivists and records managers need to be involved together with information systems designers in the creation of records keeping systems. The records continuum model emphasizes advanced records management strategies and systems in order to ensure the systematic preservation, retrieval and disposal of records. As the records management systems shift from the narrow physical records management as well as imaging into the broader electronic records world there is need for the municipality to embrace more advanced records management strategies like Outsource/Cloud service and integrated records management systems. In order to get a deeper understanding of the factors that affect the development of archives and records management; this study combined both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The census method was used to select all the 80 members of the records management department in the metropolitan municipality. An in-depth interview schedule was conducted with 4 records managers in order to collect qualitative data. Questionnaires were distributed to 76 personnel in the records management department. Without an operational and effective policy in the department of records, there is no vanguard against unlawful records and archives access and corruption, which is affecting archives development and records management in the long run. The study established although email backups and archiving of files are important strategies, more effective and modern strategies like Integrated Records Management system across the entire organization and the cloud system have not been put in place. This is attributed to the lack of funding and IT expertise. The study concluded that that although training and skills development programs are being ii implemented, skills transfer is not fully taking place due to lack of; equipment, time, managerial support and post-training interventions as well monitoring and evaluation systems. The study recommends an integrated records management system, operationalization of the records management system, effective skills transfer programs, the competency-based model.

A young person can learn various subjects and facts in schools that would be life-long remembered. Schools can thus be regarded as an important instrument contributing to the positive development of young people.These young people are born into families and in addition to the school the family is regarded as the basic source of strength, nurturance and support for its individual members as well as ensuring stability and generational continuity. Families also play a key role in the development of young people. However, many families struggle with socio-economic issues like poverty, substance abuse and conflict amongst parents and caregivers. The focus of this study is on factors within the school environment that enhance the resilience of high school learnerswhere their experiences of the family’s less than ideal socio-economic situation and challenges create barriers to learning. Literature shows that the school is a place where learners spend the largest portion of their time per day. When learners leave homeforschool, they become the responsibility of the teacher. Teachers in high schools are thus challenged to facilitatereal support to vast number of learners who facedifficult issues in their personal lives. The researcher was interested to know what these young people regard as the factors in school that enhance their resilience despite difficult family circumstances. This study employed a qualitative research approach, embedded in an explorative anddescriptive research design.The sample of the study was drawn from young people who have successfully completed high school. A non-probability, volunteer sampling technique wasemployed to recruit ten young people. They were interviewed using semi-structured interviews. The research ethics such as voluntary participation, informed consent, confidentiality and principle of no harm to participants were adhered to. To ensure the trustworthiness of the data, the researcher observed aspects of credibility, transferability, dependability and conformability. The findings of the study couldcontribute to local knowledge and an increased understanding of aspects of the school that supportresilience-building for young people from challenging circumstances. Young people interviewed in the study came from backgrounds where they experienced various socio-economic challenges, they were able to reflect on strengths in their family systems, personal strengths and how it influences their choices. They also spoke about the positive role the school played in building their resilience and made valuable contributions about how the school can be responsive to students with varying strength-sets.

- Description: The MeerKAT is the most sensitive radio telescope in its class, and it is important that systematic effects do not limit the dynamic range of the instrument, preventing this sensitivity from being harnessed for deep integrations. During commissioning, spurious artefacts were noted in the MeerKAT passband and the root cause was attributed to systematic errors in the digital signal path. Finite precision arithmetic used by the Polyphase Filterbank (PFB) was one of the main factors contributing to the spurious responses, together with bugs in the firmware. This thesis describes a software PFB simulator that was built to mimic the MeerKAT PFB and allow investigation into the origin and mitigation of the effects seen on the telescope. This simulator was used to investigate the effects in signal integrity of various rounding techniques, overflow strategies and dual polarisation processing in the PFB. Using the simulator to investigate a number of different signal levels, bit-width and algorithmic scenarios, it gave insight into how the periodic dips occurring in the MeerKAT passband were the result of the implementation using an inappropriate rounding strategy. It further indicated how to select the best strategy for preventing overflow while maintaining high quantization effciency in the FFT. This practice of simulating the design behaviour in the PFB independently of the tools used to design the DSP firmware, is a step towards an end-to-end simulation of the MeerKAT system (or any radio telescope using nite precision digital signal processing systems). This would be useful for design, diagnostics, signal analysis and prototyping of the overall instrument.

First responders’ perceptions of secondary traumatic stress and the screening and referral of trauma survivors at risk of developing posttraumatic stress

This also means that several professional helpers termed first responders, will have frequent contact with individuals who have been traumatized. Working with trauma survivors could have both negative and positive outcomes. On the one hand, first responders’ interaction with trauma survivors provide them with the opportunity to detect when a survivor may be at risk of developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Unfortunately, this exposure also puts them at risk of developing secondary traumatic stress with symptoms like those of the trauma survivors they assist. Secondary Traumatic Stress (STS) is relatively well studied among certain helping professions such as therapists, counsellors, social workers and even advocates who work with trauma survivors. Research concerning STS among emergency unit first responders is, however, limited (especially in the South African context). Furthermore, literature investigating emergency unit first responder’s perception of secondary traumatic stress and the screening and referral of trauma survivors at risk of developing PTSD in a South African context appears to be non- existent. The current study aimed to explore and describe first responders’ perceptions of STS and the screening and referral of trauma survivors at risk of developing PTSD. A qualitative design was employed using semi-structured interview questions. The researcher employed a purposive sampling method. As such, only first responders in the emergency unit of general hospitals who regularly work with trauma survivors will be considered for the current study. The data from the interviews was analyzed using thematic analysis based on the principles proposed by Braun and Clark (2006). The findings from this study indicated that while first responders are at risk of developing STS due to the high frequency exposure to traumatic material, very few considered the effects of working with trauma on their mental health. Furthermore, participants in this study reported having inadequate knowledge of PTSD and did not feel confident in screening for trauma survivors at risk of developing PTSD. In addition, participants reported that, while they have previously screened and referred trauma survivors who may be at risk, there was no standard protocol for screening and referring such patients. That being said, the participants did state that should they consider a patient a risk, the hospitals in which they worked did have psychologists on-site.

Flammability of indigenous and invasive alien woody plants in coastal fynbos and thicket

- Description: Globally, extreme fires have become more common in wildland-urban interface areas, and more recently, along the southern Cape coast of South Africa. The 2017 Knysna fires prompted greater understanding of the flammability of, and the fire risk posed by, different vegetation groups, which is essential to develop fire risk mitigation strategies. In this study, I experimentally assessed flammability of 30 woody plant species from the vegetation groups indigenous fynbos, thicket, and invasive alien plants (IAPs) that occur along the southern Cape coast. Live plant shoots were sampled across varying fire weather conditions and burnt experimentally to measure flammability in relation to fire weather conditions, fuel moisture, and fuel load. Flammability measures considered were: burn intensity, completeness of burn, time-to-ignition, and the likelihood of spontaneous ignition. I further assessed the flammability of partially dried plant material as a crude proxy for drought effects, to ascertain whether drying of fuels would differentially affect the flammability of the vegetation groups. I used generalized linear mixed-effects models to assess flammability measures in relation to the predictor variables: fire weather, fuel moisture, fuel load, vegetation groups, and species (as a random factor). Results showed that increasing severity of fire weather significantly increased flammability through increasing burn intensity, increasing completeness of burn, increasing the likelihood of spontaneous ignition, and also reducing time-to-ignition. Increasing fuel moisture significantly decreased burn intensity, completeness of burn, and the likelihood of spontaneous ignition. Fuel load significantly increased burn intensity and time-to-ignition. Flammability was highest in IAPs, intermediate in fynbos, and lowest in thicket. IAPs and fynbos showed significantly higher ignitability, and thus present risks under moderate and high fire weather conditions, whereas thicket presents lower risks under low and moderate fire weather conditions. The drying out of fuels considerably increased flammability equally in the three vegetation groups, and by implication, fire risk due to an increase in dead:live ratio. Flammability was furthermore assessed in relation to fuel traits, i.e. the proportion of fine fuels, coarse fuels, and dead fuels, fuel bed porosity, fuel load, and fuel moisture, using multiple regression analysis and stepwise selection of factors. This revealed that fuel moisture was the most important factor affecting flammability in terms of all the flammability measures. Results further showed that the increase in v the proportions of fine fuels increased flammability by increasing completeness of burn. Lastly, vegetation groups were compared (using Kruskal Wallis) in terms of their flammability and fuel traits. I found that fynbos and IAPs exhibited greater flammability on account of higher completeness of burn and more rapid ignition than thicket species, but no clear distinction was evident between fynbos and IAPs. Fynbos’ high flammability was attributed to high proportions of fine and porous fuels. Thicket’s low flammability was attributed to high proportions of coarse and dense fuels. Little distinction in fuel traits could be made between fynbos and IAPs, except that fynbos had a greater proportion of fine fuels. There is a potential risk posed by the IAPs in terms of increased flammability and fire severity, on an indigenous landscape that is invaded. Fire managers need to encourage the prioritization of the management of IAPs that present high flammability as an attempt to reduce fire risk along the southern Cape coast of South Africa.

- Description: This study evaluates fluid variations in hydrothermal quartz veins from gold deposits in Kamiuga, Lugushwa and Namoya, located in the Twangiza-Namoya Gold Belt (TNGB) of the Kibara Belt in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC. Petrographic, fluid inclusion (FI) microthermometric observations and Raman spectroscopy provided qualitative and quantitative fluid composition data on the hydrothermal and magmatic fluids and their evolution during mineral precipitation. The formational fluids, based on genetically specific characteristics, were categorized into six distinct FI Types. Type 1 to 4 FIs are common in all TNGB fluids. Type 1 and 2 FIs are high salinity halite bearing FIs that indicate formation fluids that are predominantly metamorphic-sedimentary in source. CO2 vapour-bearing and the aqueous-saline CO2 liquid-bearing Type 3 FIs commonly contain CH4 and/or N2. Type 4 FIs are saline aqueous and commonly co-genetic with Type 1 and 2 FIs. Type 5 CO2-rich FIs contain either sulphide crystals, amorphous or crystalline carbon. Type 3 and 5 FIs indicate fluid sources rich in organic materials. Type 6 single aqueous-liquid phase FIs have no apour bubble, lacked a visible phase change on heating and were not thermometrically evaluated. The data indicated a high correlation between fluid composition and gold grades. High Au grade veins correlate with CO2 bearing Type 3 and 5 FIs -predominantly liquid-bearing CO2 fluids and quartz veins and fluids that contain increased organic material and sulphides. The polyphase quartz veins show highly variable homogenisation and formational temperatures exceeding 400°C. Formation conditions indicate high trapping temperatures in relation to the pressures at which fluids were captured. The high depth-temperature gradients are likely associated with mesothermal orogenic go ld deposition. Mineralisation is interpreted to have taken place as a result of mobilisation of fluids during the Pan African orogeny. Based on fluid petrography and microthermometry, gold mineralisation is most likely associated with secondary fluid influx from metamorphic sedimentary sourrces such as metapelites. The correlation between high gold grades and secondary fluids containing sulphides, high depth-temperature gradients, elevated CO2, CH4 and organic materials suggest black shales as a possible primary fluid and gold source. The development of variable and multiple fluid influx events and interactions with host rocks and imported materials resulted in complex polyphase quartz veins; the product of which created viable gold deposits throughout the TNGB. The six FI Types provides evidence of the diversity in the formation and evolution of gold deposits in the TNGB.

The correlation between high gold grades and secondary fluids containing sulphides, high depth-temperature gradients, elevated CO2, CH4 and organic materials suggest black shales as a possible primary fluid and gold source. The development of variable and multiple fluid influx events and interactions with host rocks and imported materials resulted in complex polyphase quartz veins; the product of which created viable gold deposits throughout the TNGB. The six FI Types provides evidence of the diversity in the formation and evolution of gold deposits in the TNGB.

- Description: My thesis combines short stories and flash fiction and a short novella collection. Working between reality and fantasy. The collection both engage the strangeness of magic in everyday life and explore other worlds. The stories uses different points of view to highlight the impossibility of a single stable reality. The writing is heavily influenced by Amos Tutuola (The Palm-Wine Drunkard) for his big imagination and how he draws from Yoruba folklore and mixes myth to fiction. Mica Dean Hicks (Electricity and other dreams) he writes with simplicity and his settings always believable yet with one sentence everything becomes a different world of seen and unseen. Margarita Karapanou (Kassandra and the wolf) The tone of the book captured me, how she balances heavy social theme around a young girl, the tone changes from chapter to chapter - from surreal to hallucinatory to mythic to something in between all these modes. She writes rape, but not once has she mentioned rape, yet she is writing about rape. Some books that revolutionized the way I see stories are (Kintu) written by Jennifer Nansubuga Makumbi and (Homegoing) by Yaa Gyasi. They both draw from histories yet contemporize their stories. Which my thesis intends to do that in stories such ‘MoonEyed Maiden’ and Sorana. Flying Cows and Other Traumas is an exploration of female body, when the sacredness of the female body is dehumanized by social injustices. Each story is a stand alone; the structure holds the through-line of the collection which conditions the complexities, the rawness and bluntness of how imbalance our society is. When the body is tainted with unfairness and powered down- how does one come up from that? The collection deals with poverty, sexual assault, systemic injustice, and sexism and some stories draw from personal experiences and fears. The female body is used as a hostage of shame and commodity and the female protagonists in ‘Flying Cows & Other Traumas sharpen their own stuff and shields to face their own injustices through blurring lines of mundanity and fantastical with experimental tone.

- Description: This study is based on the proposition that the respective philosophies of Nietzsche and Deleuze, including his collaborative work with Guattari, provide a way to rethink the underlying structures that inform ways of thinking about food and eating. In Nietzschean and Deleuzian terms, many of the dominant ways that humans currently think about food and eating are fraught with multiple anxieties that lead to passivity and despair, as well as obsessive concerns and feelings of guilt. This can be understood as various ways to say No to life and to difference‘. For the sake of overcoming (or at least addressing) such forms of eating-related nihilism, or life-denying attitudes, I argue that there is an urgent need for philosophical research that deals critically with the underlying food values‘ that lead to contemporary nihilistic ways of thinking about food. Further, I argue that critiquing contemporary dominant nihilistic food discourses and values from a Deleuzian and Nietzschean perspective, as well as exploring what produces nihilism, opens up Avenues/possibilities for shifts in approaching the problem of food and eating in a more life-affirming way. Specifically, Nietzsche‘s work on active and reactive forces, coupled with Deleuze and Guattari‘s account of concepts, allows for an exploration of what a starting point for overcoming nihilism might look like. - Description: The human immune deficiency virus (HIV) infection has been ranked as one of the most devastating microbial infections in the world. This status is a result of the HIV rapid genetic variation, which limits discovery of a vaccine. Use application of antiretroviral therapy (ARVT) in treatment of the disease caused by the HIV infection (known as acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, HIV-AIDS) is frequently compromised by several factors such as the low bioavailability and severe adverse effects associated with the existing antiretroviral drugs (ARVDs). This underlines the need for controlling the pharmacokinetics profiles of ARVD using effective vehicles that can modify drug biodistribution. The same is true for many other conditions, where delivery systems can determine the success or failure of treatment by controlling pharmacokinetic and dynamic properties. The mucosal linings of the oral cavities in addition offer adorable route of administration for systematic drug delivery, improving drug therapeutic performance and often preferred by clinicians and patients. Liposomes are tiny spherical sacs of phospholipid molecules enclosing water droplets, formed (artificially) to carry drugs or other substances into the tissues by crossing and targeting to specific organelles. This work therefore focused on preparation of liposomes and liposomal buccal films (BFs) for potential buccal delivery of efavirenz, an ARVD model endowed with poor solubility and several side effects. The liposomes were prepared by thin film hydration method using crude soybean lecithin (CL) and cholesterol. Efavirenz loaded liposomes were evaluated for particle size, Zeta potential (ZP), morphology, encapsulation efficiency (EE%) and release kinetics studies. The physiochemical properties of the liposomes were also evaluated using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersity spectroscopy (EDS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), while the formulation with the best encapsulation efficiency was used as the solvent medium for the buccal film formation. The buccal films were prepared using solvent casting method, where the liposomal suspension was used as the dispersing medium. The films were optimized for physical properties (thickness, weight variation and folding endurance) using digital Vernier calliper and digital weighing balance. The physiochemical properties of the selected BFs films made of Carbopol (CP) and its combination with Pluronic F127 (PF127) were further characterized using XRD, DSC, FTIR, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), EDS and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). The permeation study of the selected BFs was investigated using Franz diffusion cell. The BFs composed of CP alone or its combination with PF127 demonstrated much better bio-adhesive properties than the films made of other polymers (like Hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose, HPMC) alone or in combination with PF127. The developed liposome formulation showed high encapsulation 98.8 ± 0.01 % in CL to cholesterol mass ratio of 1:1 and total lipid to drug mass ratio of 2:1. The average particle size 104.82 ± 2.29 nm and Zeta potential -50.33 ± 0.95 mV of these liposomes were found to be attractive for targeted delivery to the HIV infected cells. The CP based BFs (without and with PF127) exhibited good film thickness 0.88 ± 0.10 and 0.76 ± 0.14 mm, with weight uniformity 68.22 ± 1.04 and 86.28 ± 2. 16 mg, satisfactory flexibility values 258 and 321, and slightly acidic pH 6.43 ± 0.76 and 6.32 ± 0.01. The swelling percentage was found to be 50 % for CP film alone and 78 % for CP film with PF127. The cumulative amount of drug that permeated through the buccal epithelium over 24 hours was about 66 % from CP film alone and 75 % from CP film with PF127. Since no evidence of the liposomal encapsulation of EFV have been reported to our knowledge, we find the insights from the present study valuable as a set of preliminary data to encourage further investigations of the encapsulation and delivery of EFV like antiretrovirals for enhanced solubility, site targeting and prolonged release using crude soybean lecithin and mucoadhesive polymers, which holds some added economical values as naturally occurring lipid and polymeric mixtures as a promising delivery systems for buccal delivery of ARVDs.
