In silico analysis of human Hsp90 for the identification of novel anti-cancer drug target sites and natural compound inhibitors

Specifically, Hsp90 aids in the folding of nascent proteins and re-folding of denatured proteins. It also plays an important role in the prevention of protein aggregation. Hsp90’s functionality is attributed to its several staged, multi-conformational ATPase cycle, in which associated client proteins are bound and released. Hsp90 is known to be associated with a wide array of client proteins, some of which are thought to be involved in multiple oncogenic processes. Indeed Hsp90 is known to be directly involved in perpetuating the stability and function of multiple mutated, chimeric and over-expressed signalling proteins that are known to promote the growth and survival of cancer cells. Hsp90 inhibitors are thus thought to be promising therapeutic agents for cancer treatment. A lack of a 3D structure of human Hsp90 however has restricted Hsp90 inhibitor development in large to in vivo investigations. This study, aims to investigate and calculate hypothetical homology models of the full human Hsp90 protein, and to probe these structural models for novel drug target sites using several in silico techniques. A multi-template homology modelling methodology was developed and in conjunction with protein-protein docking techniques, two functionally important human Hsp90 structural models were calculated; the nucleotide free “v-like” open and nucleotide bound closed conformations. Based on the conservation of ligand binding, virtual screening experiments conducted on both models using 316 natural compounds indigenous to South Africa, revealed three novel putative target sites. Two binding pockets in close association with important Hsp90-Hop interaction residues and a single binding pocket on the dimerization interface in the C-terminal domain. Targeted molecular docking experiments at these sites revealed two compounds (721395-11-5 and 264624-39-7) as putative inhibitors, both showing strong binding affinities for at least one of the three investigated target sites. Furthermore both compounds were found to only violate one Lipinski’s rules, suggesting their potential as candidates for further drug development. The combined work described here provides a putative platform for the development of next generation inhibitors of human Hsp90.

In vivo and In vitro investigations to elucidate the associations of B-N-methylamino-L-alanine with proteins

This neurotoxin bioaccumulates and biomagnifies with increasing trophic levels in ecosystems by associating with proteins. It has been suggested that these associations with host proteins also serve as a reservoir from where BMAA is slowly released with normal protein catabolism, resulting in a continuous low level exposure. However, the nature of these associations remains poorly defined. The widely accepted hypothesis regarding the nature of these associations is that BMAA associates with proteins through primary incorporation into proteins with specific replacement of serine. In addition to excitotoxicity, BMAA misincorporation has been proposed as a potential mechanism of toxicity because of its link to protein tangle diseases. Interactions between BMAA and proteins that are not the result of misincorporation, have also been observed. However, the nature of these non-primary associations has not been investigated. This study focussed on establishing whether BMAA is misincorporated into host proteins with consequent toxicity, and on elucidating the nature of the BMAA-protein associations not linked to primary incorporation. In comparative studies between BMAA and canavanine, an arginine analogue known to misincorporate, exposure to BMAA did not result in any toxicity in prokaryotes or in an undifferentiated eukaryotic mammalian cell line, in contrast to what was observed upon canavanine exposure. Differentiation of the cell line with nerve growth factor to express glutamate receptors resulted in marked toxicity upon BMAA exposure, highlighting excitoxicity as the main mechanism of BMAA toxicity. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that BMAA interacts with free amino acids and proteins in the absence of de novo protein synthesis, causing enzyme inhibition and protein misfolding. It was concluded that BMAA does not interact with proteins through primary incorporation and that the observed associations are the result of an interaction between BMAA and amino acid side chains to form covalent bonds.

Income generating projects and poverty alleviation: the Baviaans Arts and Crafts Project

- Description: South Africa has witnessed series of social unrest, many of which ended in violence by very poor communities who allege poor delivery of basic goods and services. The majority of South African citizens are poor and pervasive inequality exists between men and women and between black and white peoples of the country. The poverty alleviation strategies inequalities and the consequences of poverty amongst women in rural areas (Ozoemena, 2010). Cacadu District municipality has done a study analysis on poverty alleviation in 2009-2010 together with the Baviaans municipality to verify which areas was the most poorest in Baviaans municipality. The findings came as Vondeling and Riertbron which was the poorest area. The focus was on tourism side because Baviaans is the tourist area.Rietbron and Vondeling is part of Baviaans Arts and craft program that was previously funded by DEDEAT R500, 00 but only benefited after incorporated to Baviaans municipality as they were previously managed by Cacadu District Municipality before and the municipality decided to invest in this areas. The funding for DEDEAT was utilized for trainings, starting material and equipment’s and building of the Baviaanskoof Craft Shop for two projects which is Vondeling and Steytlerville and Rietbron did not benefit at that time. This study focuses on the income generating projects in Baviaans municipality with the view to describe the experiences of individuals who participate in these income generating projects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the contribution of income generating projects in addressing poverty alleviation. Steytlerville projects is using waste materials like old newspaper, raw material, broken cups to do jewellery .Vondeling and Rietbron project is an angel factory producing beaded wire angels by using materials locally produced merino wool, wire wool, beads and local products such as ostrich feathers .This study is based on a case study which gives a description of poverty and reflects an involvement process of beneficiaries or communities in an income generating project and how it is impacting on their livelihoods. Qualitative and quantitative methodology were used. According to Neuman (2000: 30), the quantitative data methods refer to the collection of data using numbers, counts and measures of things and qualitative research basically involves the use of words, pictures description and narratives”. Data was collected for interviews. In order to collect accurate information, an interview was conducted based on the author’s research questions. Research was conducted in different areas like Steytlerville, Vondeling and Rietbron. A questionnaire was used as a form of data collection for the three projects. These interviews were conducted formally in a focus group composed of the projects members. In Steytlerville they were 5 members, Vondeling 7 members and Rietbron10 members which make a sample of 22 members. These projects have two craft shop where they sell their product which is Willomore craft shop and Baviaanskloof craft shop. The craft shop has been established to create an outlet by which locally sustainably made craft can be displayed and sold. The craft shop has been developed in such a way that is a real life example of a green building and business .The craft shop is an example of how to be environmentally friendly and utilise nature in such a way that it is sustainable and does not destroy it. The research findings suggested that in certain instances, Baviaans Craft project has been successful in generating income for members. The market for these crafters is mainly tourists. From this research it came out clear that some of the project members were able to acquire skills which help them to find employment in well-established craft business. Despite the successful of Baviaans Craft project, the project members were somewhat constrained in managing and running the business. For example with response for special markets, they had to make use of external skills i.e. someone who made contacts with the export market and there after divide the profits amongst members. The project members were not adequately empowered in management skills.

- Description: The purpose of this case study research was to develop a model for management of the Cookhouse Wind Farm incorporating relevant socio-economic development initiatives for community development in the Cookhouse area. As a result of the REIPPPP’s socio-economic development requirements and the multiple project overlaps of the 50km radius for the beneficiaries of wind farms, management of the Cookhouse Wind Farm face the problem of using the funding to benefit the communities in a sustainable manner. The research started with a structured literature review, followed by a qualitative case study research design using embedded units of analysis and provided a useful insight into socio-economic development in the South African wind power industry. The outcome of the study was in the form of a sustainable socio-economic development model for Cookhouse wind farm management, which highlighted the following four key focus areas: Education, Welfare, Infrastructure and Health. The study concluded with practical recommendations for relevant and sustainable socioeconomic development projects under the four key focus areas. Since the completion of the study two additional renewable energy projects have been approved (Nxuba and Golden Valley) in the same area as Cookhouse which serve to further strengthen the studies purpose.

Influence of leadership styles on the business performance of family businesses in the Eastern Cape

- Description: Given the importance of family businesses with regard to the economic growth of South Africa, and the fact that their high failure rates have a negative influence on the country’s economy, this study focused on ineffective leadership among family businesses and the influence thereof on business performance. People’s perceptions of leadership are changing, and an ethical, people-centred, character-orientated approach to leadership may be what businesses require. In addition, innovation and employee well-being are being given high priority, and leadership that is ethical and caring is of great importance. The primary objective of this study was twofold, firstly to establish the levels of Ethical, Authentic, Participative and Servant leadership displayed by family business owners and employees in the Eastern Cape, and secondly to establish the influence on the Perceived business performance of the family business of displaying these styles. Poor leadership was identified as a major challenge that family businesses are faced with, and a challenge that contributes to their high failure rate. The literature dealt with the nature and importance of leadership, and both traditional and contemporary leadership styles were elaborated on. The traditional leadership styles identified were autocratic, laissez-faire, transactional, transformational and participative leadership, while the contemporary styles identified and discussed were ethical, authentic and servant leadership. From the literature it was evident that a more ethical, people-centred, character-orientated approach to leadership may be what businesses require to be successful today. The literature highlighted Ethical, Authentic, Participative, and Servant leadership as the more character-orientated leadership styles that positively influence the performance of any business, including family businesses. These leadership styles formed the main focus of this study. In this study a quantitative research design was adopted and a descriptive study of a cross-sectional nature was undertaken. A convenience sampling technique was used owing to the inaccessibility of a family business database. The sample size in this study consisted of 250 small family businesses. A survey was undertaken and a structured, self-administered questionnaire was used to gather the necessary data. The measuring instrument was developed by sourcing items from several existing studies. Family business owners and employees working in the family business were approached by fieldworkers and asked to participate in the study. In total, 266 questionnaires were usable, 133 from family business owners and 133 from family business employees. An effective response rate of 53.20 percent was achieved. The validity and reliability of the measuring instrument were confirmed by means of an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and by the calculation of Cronbach’s alpha coefficients. Descriptive statistics were calculated in order to summarise the sample data, while t-tests were used to determine whether the differences in mean scores returned by the family business owner and employee sample groups for the leadership styles under investigation, were significantly different from each other. Pearson’s product moment correlations were used to assess the associations between the variables under investigation. A multiple regression analysis (MRA) was used to assess the relationships between the independent variables and the dependent variable Perceived business performance. Lastly, the relationships between selected demographic variables and leadership styles displayed by family business owners were tested by means of an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Five factors were extracted from the EFA, four of which were considered for further analysis. The four usable factors extracted could be identified as the theoretical dimensions of Ethical leadership, Participative leadership, Perceived business performance and Servant leadership. The items measuring Ethical and Authentic leadership did not load as expected, as several items measuring the two factors loaded onto one factor. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients returned for the four usable factors extracted from the EFA were greater than 0.7, and thus the scales measuring the independent and dependent variables provided satisfactory evidence of validity and reliability. The findings of this study show that for both the family business owner and employee sample group, Ethical leadership returned the highest mean score, followed by Servant and Participative leadership. The great majority of the family business owners therefore agreed that they adopted these leadership styles. In addition the majority of family business employees agreed that the family business owner, for whom they worked, adopted these leadership styles. T-tests were conducted to assess whether the differences in mean scores returned by the two sample groups were statistically significant. Significant differences were found between the means scores returned by both sample groups with regard to the level of Ethical and Servant leadership displayed by the family business owner. No significant difference was found between the mean scores returned by both sample groups for Participative leadership. This finding was not surprising, given that socially desirable bias occurs when individuals describe or rate themselves in a manner that is untruthful or in a way that they feel may be viewed favourably by others. From the MRA, no relationships were reported between the independent variables (Ethical, Participative and Servant leadership) and the dependent variable Perceived business performance. The results of ANOVA revealed that there was no relationship between the Gender, Age, Ethnicity, Tenure, Generation, Number of employees and the Nature of the family business and the Ethical, Participative, and Servant leadership styles. However, the results show that family business owners with a tertiary qualification are more likely to adopt a Participative leadership style. Despite no significant relationship found in this study, it is well supported in the literature that the leadership styles investigated have a positive influence on business performance. Family business owners should take cognisance of this, and measures should be taken to ensure that the leadership style implemented in their businesses is ethical, participative and servant-orientated. This study has attempted to enlarge the body of knowledge available on leadership, especially concerning the servant, ethical, people-centred and character-orientated leadership styles. The results of the study differ somewhat from existing literature, and therefore add to the body of knowledge on leadership. Furthermore, this study has addressed a gap in the current literature regarding the influence of leadership on business performance among family businesses in a developing economy such as South Africa.

The traditional leadership styles identified were autocratic, laissez-faire, transactional, transformational and participative leadership, while the contemporary styles identified and discussed were ethical, authentic and servant leadership. From the literature it was evident that a more ethical, people-centred, character-orientated approach to leadership may be what businesses require to be successful today. The literature highlighted Ethical, Authentic, Participative, and Servant leadership as the more character-orientated leadership styles that positively influence the performance of any business, including family businesses. These leadership styles formed the main focus of this study. In this study a quantitative research design was adopted and a descriptive study of a cross-sectional nature was undertaken. A convenience sampling technique was used owing to the inaccessibility of a family business database. The sample size in this study consisted of 250 small family businesses. A survey was undertaken and a structured, self-administered questionnaire was used to gather the necessary data. The measuring instrument was developed by sourcing items from several existing studies. Family business owners and employees working in the family business were approached by fieldworkers and asked to participate in the study. In total, 266 questionnaires were usable, 133 from family business owners and 133 from family business employees. An effective response rate of 53.20 percent was achieved. The validity and reliability of the measuring instrument were confirmed by means of an exploratory factor analysis (EFA) and by the calculation of Cronbach’s alpha coefficients. Descriptive statistics were calculated in order to summarise the sample data, while t-tests were used to determine whether the differences in mean scores returned by the family business owner and employee sample groups for the leadership styles under investigation, were significantly different from each other. Pearson’s product moment correlations were used to assess the associations between the variables under investigation. A multiple regression analysis (MRA) was used to assess the relationships between the independent variables and the dependent variable Perceived business performance. Lastly, the relationships between selected demographic variables and leadership styles displayed by family business owners were tested by means of an Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). Five factors were extracted from the EFA, four of which were considered for further analysis. The four usable factors extracted could be identified as the theoretical dimensions of Ethical leadership, Participative leadership, Perceived business performance and Servant leadership. The items measuring Ethical and Authentic leadership did not load as expected, as several items measuring the two factors loaded onto one factor. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients returned for the four usable factors extracted from the EFA were greater than 0.7, and thus the scales measuring the independent and dependent variables provided satisfactory evidence of validity and reliability. The findings of this study show that for both the family business owner and employee sample group, Ethical leadership returned the highest mean score, followed by Servant and Participative leadership. The great majority of the family business owners therefore agreed that they adopted these leadership styles. In addition the majority of family business employees agreed that the family business owner, for whom they worked, adopted these leadership styles. T-tests were conducted to assess whether the differences in mean scores returned by the two sample groups were statistically significant. Significant differences were found between the means scores returned by both sample groups with regard to the level of Ethical and Servant leadership displayed by the family business owner. No significant difference was found between the mean scores returned by both sample groups for Participative leadership. This finding was not surprising, given that socially desirable bias occurs when individuals describe or rate themselves in a manner that is untruthful or in a way that they feel may be viewed favourably by others. From the MRA, no relationships were reported between the independent variables (Ethical, Participative and Servant leadership) and the dependent variable Perceived business performance. The results of ANOVA revealed that there was no relationship between the Gender, Age, Ethnicity, Tenure, Generation, Number of employees and the Nature of the family business and the Ethical, Participative, and Servant leadership styles. However, the results show that family business owners with a tertiary qualification are more likely to adopt a Participative leadership style. Despite no significant relationship found in this study, it is well supported in the literature that the leadership styles investigated have a positive influence on business performance. Family business owners should take cognisance of this, and measures should be taken to ensure that the leadership style implemented in their businesses is ethical, participative and servant-orientated. This study has attempted to enlarge the body of knowledge available on leadership, especially concerning the servant, ethical, people-centred and character-orientated leadership styles. The results of the study differ somewhat from existing literature, and therefore add to the body of knowledge on leadership. Furthermore, this study has addressed a gap in the current literature regarding the influence of leadership on business performance among family businesses in a developing economy such as South Africa.

Formal equality presupposes that all persons are equal bearers of rights and that inequality can be eliminated by extending the same rights to all. Formal equality is blind to social and economic differences between groups and individuals. Substantive equality, on the other hand, is receptive to entrenched, structural inequality, meaning that the equality clause of the Constitution must be read as founded on a substantive concept of equality. An employer can utilise the defence of an inherent requirement of a job in the case of an unfair-discrimination claim since the defence is available in terms of both the Employment Equity Act, in respect of employment discrimination, and the Labour Relations Act in respect of discriminatory dismissals. The defence is narrow in that only essential duties of a particular job will be taken into account to determine inherent requirements of a particular job. Reported judgments where this defence is used are scant. What makes the defence more onerous is that an employer has to show that the particular employee could not be reasonably accommodated, before the inherent-requirement defence will succeed. It is integral to the determination of whether there was unfair discrimination and whether such discrimination was justifiable. An important debate in our discrimination law relates to the question of whether any significance should be attached to the fact that only unfair discrimination is outlawed. Neither of the aforementioned pieces of legislation clearly state that affirmative action or an inherent requirement of a job are the only defences available to employers. Where these two defences are found to be not applicable, may the fairness be decided in terms of a general fairness defence? This question is also addressed in the present treatise. It is submitted that foreign law is a valuable interpretive tool, provided it is used wisely, in that judgments originating from courts and tribunals in the United Kingdom and Canada may assist to provide an understanding of the issues central to employment discrimination law and the parameters of the defence of inherent requirements of the job. Thus, in developing employment discrimination law in South Africa, consideration of foreign jurisprudence may prove informative.

The study investigates effective ways of teaching transformation geometry in grade 9, applying van Hiele’s theory (1986) of geometry teaching and learning and Kilpatrick’s model of mathematical proficiency. The teaching programme activities require consistent use of physical manipulatives by the teacher for effective teaching, learning and understanding of geometric concepts. The type of study is a case study. Data collection tools are: - baseline evaluation, teacher & learner interviews (pre & post programme intervention) and observation (pre & post) during the implementation of the teaching programme. Results were analysed both qualitatively and quantitatively. My research findings show some improvement of learner performance after the application of the programme. Baseline evaluation shows that some learners attained below and above 30%. Interviews showed that some learners had problems before the implementation of the programme and some problems were eliminated by the use of the programme activities and learning progression was evident. Learner performance showed that learners had acquired some knowledge and critical thinking and reasoning skills, reflection skills, communication through LOLT improved, commitment to activities of the programme and teaching practice had improved. Learner performance showed that a learner can be in two different levels at the same time. Consistent use of manipulatives resulted in effective teaching and learning of geometry in grade 9. The results of this research support other researchers’ views of teaching geometry using van Hiele’s theory (1986) and Kilpatrick et al. (2001). Shaw (2002) argues that teaching geometry with manipulatives enhances conceptual understanding by the learner. In my opinion, it also promotes immediate intervention by the teacher as soon as the learner picks an incorrect object. The project enhanced and improved levels of communication between the learner, teacher and others in the classroom.

- Description: Internationally, water resources are facing increasing pressure due to over-exploitation and pollution. Integrated Water Resource Management (IWRM) has been accepted internationally as a paradigm for integrative and sustainable management of water resources. However, in practice, the implementation and success of IWRM policies has been hampered by the lack of availability of integrative decision support tools, especially within the context of limited resources and observed data. This is true for the Crocodile River Catchment (CRC), located within the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. The catchment has been experiencing a decline in water quality as a result of the point source input of a cocktail of pollutants, which are discharged from industrial and municipal wastewater treatment plants, as well as diffuse source runoff and return flows from the extensive areas of irrigated agriculture and mining sites. The decline in water quality has profound implications for a range of stakeholders across the catchment including increased treatment costs and reduced crop yields. The combination of deteriorating water quality and the lack of understanding of the relationships between water quantity and quality for determining compliance/non-compliance in the CRC have resulted in collaboration between stakeholders, willing to work in a participatory and transparent manner to create an Integrated Water Quality Management Plan (IWQMP). This project aimed to model water quality, (combined water quality and quantity), to facilitate the IWQMP aiding in the understanding of the relationship between water quantity and quality in the CRC. A relatively simple water quality model (WQSAM) was used that receives inputs from established water quantity systems models, and was designed to be a water quality decision support tool for South African catchments. The model was applied to the CRC, achieving acceptable simulations of total dissolved solids (used as a surrogate for salinity) and nutrients (including orthophosphates, nitrates +nitrites and ammonium) for historical conditions. Validation results revealed that there is little consistency within the catchment, attributed to the non-stationary nature of water quality at many of the sites in the CRC. The analyses of the results using a number of representations including, seasonal load distributions, load duration curves and load flow plots, confirmed that the WQSAM model was able to capture the variability of relationships between water quantity and quality, provided that simulated hydrology was sufficiently accurate. The outputs produced by WQSAM was seen as useful for the CRC, with the Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency (IUCMA) planning to operationalise the model in 2015. The ability of WQSAM to simulate water quality in data scarce catchments, with constituents that are appropriate for the needs of water resource management within South Africa, is highly beneficial.

- Description: The study was conducted to explore the relationship between active learning processes emerging from the use of O’Donoghue’s (2001) active learning framework and a series of education quality indicators proposed by Nikel and Lowe (2010). To achieve this aim a professional educational intervention was conducted encouraging the use of this active learning framework in the Namibian Environmental Studies Curriculum, in order to strengthen educational quality within the Environmental Studies Curriculum. The research was conducted in the Windhoek region at the school where I am currently teaching. Four teachers took part in this study, including myself in the role of a participantobserver. The active learning framework was used to guide us in the planning and presentations of environmental learning lessons. The study was conducted within the interpretive paradigm and was qualitative in nature as well as focusing on a quantitative aspect to analyse some of the data (learners’ written work). The key findings of the study were that: a) prior to the intervention with the active learning framework the teachers who took part in the study did not ask learners to explore environmental issues in the environment or to respond to particular environmental issues; b) active learning processes have the potential to facilitate the exploration of environmental issues in the environment, and responses to particular environmental issues. Active learning also have the potential to strengthen all aspects of education quality indicated in Nikel and Lowe’s (2010) quality model, namely effectiveness, efficiency, equity, relevance, responsiveness, reflexivity and sustainability; c) the active learning framework encouraged teachers to use a variety of situated learning approaches, such as the collaborative method, the cooperative method, the problem-solving method and the enquiry method, in order to strengthen the educational quality in Environmental Studies classrooms; and d) teachers find the active learning framework useful as a tool for planning and presenting environmental learning lessons. The findings of the study have the potential to inform curriculum developers, materials developers and educators with an interest in improving education quality through environmental learning processes within the Environmental Studies Curriculum in Namibia. The intervention utilised a modified report writing template for engineering practical sessions which focused on argumentation, conceptual understanding, critical thinking and language literacies. Quantitative and qualitative data were generated via pre-post-analysis of the modified practical report template, Cornell Critical Thinking Test, questionnaires, as well as focus group interviews with students; and individual interviews with staff, on their perceptions of the SWH. The sample (n=56 matched pairs) was divided into three groups through convenience sampling. Group 1 (n=15) utilised an online intervention, Group 2 (n=20) utilised a paper-based intervention and Group 3 (n=21) utilised a standard paper-based laboratory report template. Statistically significant differences with large effect sizes were obtained between group scores from pre- to post-tests in terms of argumentation and language. No differences between the pre-post-test changes in terms of group conceptual scores (n= 91) were found and there was a drop in scores from pre- to post-test in terms of critical thinking (n= 56). Overall, the data indicates that the SWH approach improved students‟ argumentation and language literacies with large effect sizes. Focus group interviews revealed that students believed that the SWH approach made them “think deeper” and that they preferred the intervention (SWH) over the traditional approach. The apparent unawareness of the academics concerned in terms of argument-based inquiry provides a possible answer for their use of assessment strategies focused only on concepts. This study seeks to examine the factors affecting citizens ability to access e-government services in Nkonkobe Municipality in the province of Eastern Cape and come with recommendations of how to address the issue. E-government services should be developed on platforms with the consideration of devices that people can have access to. The study showed that in as much as one can have cell phone that has access to internet , some website services such as home affairs enquiry applications are not accessible on a phone with a general web browser that has no Java Script capacity but has acces to internet. Therefore developing Short Message Service (SMS) based services or Unstructured Supplementary Serviuce Data (USSD) code that is available on all Globile System for Mobile (GSM) cell phones can increase accessibility of most services at a cheaper cost. The study concludes that although e-government is the future for our country and in this era of technology, much still has to be done in areas like Nkonkobe Municipality in Eastern Cape, as the citizens have no or lack appropriate tools to access the internet, and sometimes citizens are not aware of e-government services available. The research indicates that most citizens have cell phones despite the differences in handset capabilities, which therefore means that applications developed for e-government services can be ported foe accessibility to ordinary GSM cell phone including those without internet access.

The lives of thousands of people have been improved and targets have already been met on reducing poverty, increasing access to safe water, improving the lives of slum dwellers, and achieving gender parity in primary education. Despite huge gains, progress towards the eight MDGs has been uneven, not only among regions and countries, but also between population groups within countries, with accelerated action needed in many areas (MDG, 2013). On the other hand poverty alleviation, when we look at poverty alleviation, Mbaku (2007) defines it as the creation of a social, economic, and political environment that enhances and promotes entrepreneurial activities particularly among the poorest and most deprived persons while at the same time eliminating the inequalities that have diminished their life chances.

It was notable that teacher knowledge and interest in environmental education influence how they include environmental learning and that assessment practices narrow the scope of environmental learning in ways that do not include critical thinking and problem solving skills. The study concludes that despite diverse constraints inhibiting inclusion, the evidence suggests that the inclusion of environmental learning in Namibia’s Life Science curriculum can enable environmental education. The above main findings are used to make recommendations toward strengthening environmental content knowledge of teachers and to improve assessment practices. It was also noted that some of the environmental learning constraints could be transformed into enablers with more teacher support and by making a better link between environmental learning theories and practices. This will involve a redirection of the curriculum documents as well as the provision of other learning support materials to support environmental learning. The study has enabled me to conclude that what is happening should be encouraged so that it continues and is strengthened although the implementation of environmental learning is not as clear as the policy had mapped out.

As part of this, it considers how such individuals understand their own sense of identity to be located within processes of nation-building, and in particular in relation to the construction of a national identity. It focuses, more particularly, on the extent to which the absence of particular languages within media can be said to impact on such processes of identity formation. The study responds, at the same time, to the argument that people’s more general lived experiences and their broader social environment have a bearing on how they make sense of the media. As such, it can be seen to critique the assumption that the media necessarily play a central and defining role within processes of socialisation. In order to explore the significance of these debates for a study of the Bakalanga, the dissertation includes a contextual discussion of language policy in Botswana, the impact of colonial history on such policy and the implications that this has had for the linguistic identity of the media. It also reviews theoretical debates that help to make sense of the role that the media plays within the processes through which minority language speakers construct their own identity. Finally, it includes an empirical case study, consisting of qualitative interviews with individuals who identify themselves as Bakalanga. It is argued that, because of the absence of their own language from the media, the respondents do not describe the media as central to their own processes of identity formation. At the same time, the respondents recognise the importance of the media within society, and are preoccupied with their own marginalisation from the media. The study explores the way the respondents make sense of such marginalisation, as demonstrated by their attempts to seek alternative media platforms in which they can find recognition of their own language and social experience. The study thus reaffirms the significance of media in society – even for people who feel that they are not recognised within such media.

- Description: We live in the era in which the internet is now available on the majority of mobile phones at a very cheaper rate. This advancement in technology has created a boom in the use of mobile phone social networking as a primary communication tool - not only for individuals but also commonly used by professionals in most fields. The trends and growing usage of social networking via mobile phone indicate a potentially effective new platform for increasing production especially in agricultural sectors. In this age of information technology, farming communities can be empowered with the latest information and knowledge through mobile phone social networking to enhance agricultural development. The study investigates the use of mobile phone social networking as an extension tool in small-scale (emerging) farmers in selected farming communities in the Cacadu District Municipality of the Eastern Cape of South Africa. Specifically, the study investigates the use of available mobile phone social networks; what they are used for; and the importance and benefits of social networking both generally and to the farming communities. The study further identifies problems inhibiting the use of mobile phone social networking. Other channels through which the small-scale (emerging) farmers acquire agricultural information, aside from via mobile phone, and the type of agricultural information these farmers acquire, are also investigated. This study focuses on the use - and not the testing or adoption of - mobile phone social networking in small-scale (emerging) agriculture. In the exercise to investigate the use of social networking apps via mobile phone, data was collected from 40 small-scale (emerging) farmers using a purposive sampling method. This study used a survey design, exploratory and descriptive research methodologies. Data was captured by administering a questionnaire through personal face-to-face interviews. Descriptive statistics such as simple frequency tables, percentages and bar graphs were used. From the Chi-square testing, it was found that agricultural knowledge levels, internet access and size of production farm land influence the use of social networking by the small-scale (emerging) farmers. However, the result of this study showed that gender, age, other income and educational level of the small-scale (emerging) farmers are not statistically significant determinants of social networking use. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient was found to be 0.95. To establish the strength of associations of the variables, Cramer’s V ranging between 0.04 and 0.9 (signifying relationships from negligible to very strong association) was used. The findings showed that different social networks are used by the farming communities, such as WhatsApp, Facebook, and Blackberry messenger, MXit, Twitter and YouTube. The various uses of these social networks by the farmers are discussed. The benefits and problems inhibiting their use are also outlined. Other sources of acquiring agricultural information by the farmers aside from social networking via mobile phone are examined. The result of the study shows that [agricultural extension officers, other farmers, farmers’ discussion groups, friends and family,] are major sources of agricultural information to the small-scale (emerging) farmers while other sources are television, radio, print media and result demonstrations. The study suggests that to enhance mobile phone social networking to ensure that timely and effective agricultural information is readily accessible to the small-scale (emerging) farmers. These include agricultural extension officers making optimal use of social networking via mobile phone, due to the strong interaction and trust between them and the farmers. This interaction can be instrumental in the effective use of this technology as a resourceful medium for accessing agricultural information to enhance productivity. Proper awareness and understanding of the potential and benefits of mobile social networking by the farmers will motivate the small-scale (emerging) farmers to use the technology for effective agricultural purposes. Also, ensuring the availability of agricultural information to small-scale (emerging) farmers by setting up on-line pages or websites to discuss matters of interest and educate and update farmers on agricultural issues should be encouraged. This may attract the younger generation and the youth to participate fully in agricultural activities - thereby enhancing agricultural development.
