- Description: Traditional network segmentation allows discrete trust levels to be defined for different network segments, using physical firewalls or routers that control north-south traffic flowing between different interfaces. This technique reduces the attack surface area should an attacker breach one of the perimeter defences. However, east-west traffic flowing between endpoints within the same network segment does not pass through a firewall, and an attacker may be able to move laterally between endpoints within that segment. Network micro-segmentation was designed to address the challenge of controlling east-west traffic, and various solutions have been released with differing levels of capabilities and feature sets. These approaches range from simple network switch Access Control List based segmentation to complex hypervisor based software-defined security segments defined down to the individual workload, container or process level, and enforced via policy based security controls for each segment. Several commercial solutions for network micro-segmentation exist, but these are primarily focused on physical and cloud data centres, and are often accompanied by significant capital outlay and resource requirements. Given these constraints, this research determines whether existing tools provided with operating systems can be re-purposed to implement micro-segmentation and restrict east-west traffic within one or more network segments for a small-to-medium sized corporate network. To this end, a proof-of-concept lab environment was built with a heterogeneous mix of Windows and Linux virtual servers and workstations deployed in an Active Directory domain. The use of Group Policy Objects to deploy IPsec Server and Domain Isolation for controlling traffic between endpoints is examined, in conjunction with IPsec Authenticated Header and Encapsulating Security Payload modes as an additional layer of security. The outcome of the research shows that revisiting existing tools can enable organisations to implement an additional, cost-effective secure layer of defence in their network.

Quantification of pre-competitive sleep/wake behaviour in a sample of South African cyclists

- Description: The quantification of athlete pre-competitive sleep behaviour is of interest owing to the possibility that sleep loss may have a negative effect on health and performance. The purpose of this study was to monitor and quantify the sleep/wake patterns of South African cyclists prior to competitive races. A total of 336 cyclists, male and female and of differing competition levels, cycling in either the 2015 Tsogo Sun Amashova or the 2016 Telkom 94.7 Cycle Challenge completed an altered version of the Competitive Sports and Sleep Questionnaire. The questionnaire asked cyclists to report on precompetitive sleep over the past year. A subset of 92 cyclists also recorded a Core Consensus Sleep Diary for the three nights leading up to the races. The questionnaire showed that 67% of the cyclists reported worsened sleep at least once prior to competition within the past 12 months. The sleep diary found that the cyclists’ average sleep duration the night before the races was 6h19min (±1h38min), which was significantly less than two and three nights prior to the races. Sleep quality was also shown to deteriorate significantly the night before the races. The contributing factors leading to worsened pre-competitive sleep were the time the cyclists had to wake-up as well as perceived increases in sleep latency and awakenings after sleep onset. Anxiety was found to be the major cause of sleep disturbances. While females were found to be significantly more likely to report having experienced poorer sleep before competition in the past year, the sleep diary showed no difference in sleep the night before the races between the sexes. Females were significantly more likely to report instances of unpleasant dreams and waking up during the night. Again, the sleep diary data did not corroborate these findings. Females were also found to report significantly more accounts of nervousness or thoughts about competition as being the cause of sleep problems. There was no difference in sleep loss the night before competition when comparing competition-level groups. The only significant difference was that recreational cyclists were more likely to report sleeping in foreign environments as a cause of sleep disturbances. Despite a large percentage of cyclists experiencing pre-competitive sleep loss, over half (55%) perceived sleep loss to have no impact on their performance. Analysis of pre-sleep behaviour also revealed that the cyclists engaged in several practices that may have a negative effect on subsequent sleep. The vast majority of the cyclists (61%) indicated having no specific strategy to help them sleep the night before competition. Fifteen percent of cyclists reporting using media devices to help them fall asleep, a practice that has been shown to disrupt sleep. In conclusion, most cyclists, regardless of sex and level of competition experience precompetitive sleep loss attributed largely to anxiety but with the perception that this loss in sleep does not negatively impact their performance.

- Description: The demand for water is rapidly growing, placing more strain on access to the resources and subsequently its management. For sustainable management, there is a need to accurately quantify the available water resources. Unfortunately, the data required for such assessments are frequently far from sufficient in terms of availability and quality, especially in southern Africa. In the absence of historical observed data, models are generally used to describe the different hydrological processes and generate data and information that will inform management and policy decision making. Ideally, any hydrological model should be based on a sound conceptual understanding of the processes in the basin and be backed by quantitative information for the parameterization of the model. Such data is however, often inadequate in many sub-basins necessitating the incorporation of the uncertainty related to the estimation process. Model parameter estimation and input data are significant sources of uncertainty that should be quantified. Also, in southern Africa water use data are unreliable because available databases consist of licensed information and actual use is generally unknown. In this study, the water resources of two sub-basins of the Limpopo River basin – the Mogalakwena in South Africa and the Shashe shared between Botswana and Zimbabwe – are estimated. The study assessed how uncertainties in the Pitman model parameterisation and input water use data affect the estimation of surface water resources of the selected sub-basins. Farm reservoirs and irrigated areas data from various sources were collected and used to run the Pitman model. Results indicate that the total model output uncertainty is higher for the Shashe sub-basin which is more data scarce than the Mogalakwena sub-basin. The study illustrates the importance of including uncertainty in the water resources assessment process to provide baseline data for decision making in resource management and planning. The study reviews existing information sources associated with the quantification of water balance components and gives an update of water resources of the sub-basin. The flows generated by the model at the outlet of the basin were between 22.6 Mm3 and 24.7 Mm3 per month when incorporating uncertainty to the main physical runoff generating parameters. The total predictive uncertainty of the model increased to between 22.2 Mm3 and 25.0 Mm3 when anthropogenic water use data such as small farm and large reservoirs and irrigation were included. The flows generated for Shashe was between 11.7 Mm3 and 14.5 Mm3 per month when incorporating uncertainty to the main physical runoff generating parameters. The predictive uncertainty of the model changed to 11.7 Mm3 and 17.7 Mm3 after the water use uncertainty was added. However, it is expected that the uncertainty could be reduced by using higher resolution remote sensing imagery.

Regional value chains and development integration in the SADC Region: the case of the pharmaceutical industry

- Description: This thesis investigates how regional value chains (RVCs) can be used to further development integration in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region with a focus on the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry. The study is motivated by the apparent lack of attention given to the development of the pharmaceutical manufacturing industry in Southern Africa, the region’s high disease burden and the identification of the industry as economically and socially important by the SADC (2015) Industrialisation Strategy and Roadmap and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) (2017a) Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP). At the same time, South Africa and other countries in the region are exploring alternative approaches to regional integration, given the failure or stagnation of numerous formal integration arrangements throughout Africa, which have often lead to polarised rather than balanced development. This thesis argues that the development of RVCs within SADC may be an effective tool for development integration in the region, particularly in sectors such as pharmaceuticals. The study employs a value chain framework for the analysis and discusses development integration options, drawing on the East Asian experience with RVCs and on case studies involving India in the case of the pharmaceutical industry. It provides a sector profile of the industry in South Africa, due to its dominant status in the region, and also of Zimbabwe, due to that country’s potential to become a pharmaceutical industry leader in the region once again. The thesis first explores the important theoretical aspects underlying value chain analysis, namely governance and upgrading, while also outlining the rise of global value chains (GVCs). It analyses the complex relationships between RVCs and GVCs, and RVCs and regional integration. From this it concludes that RVCs are a stepping stone to participation in GVCs and that RVCs should be promoted within a development integration framework through strong regional cooperation. Value chain analysis is applied to the entire pharmaceutical manufacturing industry with a focus on SADC. The thesis examines how the sector is evolving with manufacturing multinational corporations (MNCs) outsourcing production and setting up centres of excellence in regional production hubs. The study argues that with the application of recommended policies, RVCs in sectors such as pharmaceutical manufacturing may provide a tool for achieving balanced development in the region. However, the study also finds that the pharmaceutical industry in SADC lags a long way behind the rest of the world and that many countries and firms will need to begin at the bottom of the value chain, with formulation, in order to contribute to the development of RVCs. The thesis concludes with recommendations on what policies are needed to foster the growth and development of pharmaceutical RVCs in the SADC region. These include strengthening public procurement, providing incentives for investment into the industry, incremental production and incremental export volumes, as well as certainty and predictability around the regulatory and business environment. Further, policy should aim to construct synergies and linkages on the ground between health systems and industrial developments; regulate service links important to pharmaceutical manufacturing; develop a coherent regional policy agenda; remove unnecessary non-tariff barriers to trade in the region and, in line with development integration, implement trade policy along with trade infrastructure that is efficient and includes airports, rail, roads and ports, as well as effective access to the internet.

Researching the development of a programme that merges mathematics and music in Grade R

- Description: This small-scale case study explores the potential for synergy between music and mathematics learning in early childhood education whereby music can be used to help enhance children’s mathematical proficiency. Informal observations of the young learners participating in an Early Number Fun programme initiated by the South African Numeracy Chair Project suggested that many children struggled to exercise executive functioning and self-regulated skills, and struggled also with fluency in basic numeracy concepts such as understanding pattern. This case study was set up to investigate the effect of the development and implementation of a programme in which African music and mathematics learning, (particularly in relation to pattern and sequencing) were blended. The study’s core aim was to contribute to strengthening learners’ executive function and self-regulated learning competencies, both of which are important to learners’ developing agency over their own learning. An Action-Research-embedded-in-Design-Research approach was employed. This allowed an iterative process in developing a new mode of learning through blending music and mathematics. The theory of enactivism provided a theoretical framework to the study. The basic assumptions of an enactive perspective are shared understanding and joint action through engagement (as exemplified through group interaction between learner and teacher, and learning through action). The programme was developed and implemented with ongoing refinements in two Grade R classrooms. Data collected through observation, interviewing, document analysis and the keeping of a reflective research journal, are qualitative in nature. Analysis of the data indicate that the use of African block notation, as a rhythmic medium was well within reach of the participating children, such that at the end of each 16 session intervention programme, learners at both research sites demonstrated their capacity to: • Focus their attention on one activity while a different activity was taking place alongside them. • Watch, listen and only then act. • Practise their numbers through play: to count out and to write up to 16 and beyond. • Notate, read and interpret rhythmic patterns through block notation and instrumentation. The findings suggest the intervention programme could be continued over a longer period for maximum benefit, possibly through following Grade R learners through to Grade 1. The findings further suggest that fun with rhythmic, number-based patterning can assist learners’ development of executive function and self-regulated learning skills.

Human Capital Theory imposes a linear pathway between education and earnings, that fails to recognise other sources of capital, ignores social returns and does not explain why socio-economic variables influence employability and earnings. Those returns, rather than simply incrementally delivering returns for additional years of education, are however heterogeneous across students, with field of study, gender and population group influencing earnings; and schooling type and university attended filtering whether one finds a job. This study utilises data from Rhodes University and the University of Fort Hare, illustrating the extreme positions within the South African education landscape, employing a Heckman selection to predict the returns on education. The regression is found to be partially successful in predicting a graduate’s ability to find a job, in the first instance, and thereafter their returns. It is crucial to analyse the heterogeneity of socio-economic parameters to understand aspects of the economy, and develop education policies to take advantage of this understanding, especially against the backdrop of the student protests being experienced in the country and the funding models proposed. Access to tertiary education, through policy inducement, such as the recent increase of the grant limit from R122 000 to R350 000, requires disaggregated returns to education to be investigated.

- Description: An increasingly large body of literature sees disconnection from nature as central to the convergent social-ecological crisis, rooted in anthropocentric ontologies. This study explored the potential for embodied, sociomaterial nature-based activities to engender shifts in children’s perceptions of, and sense of connectedness with, nature. Equally it explored how children’s socio-cultural-historical value positionings (SCHVP) mediated their perceptions of, and connectedness with, nature. The nature-based activities, spread over five-day camps, were located at Hobbiton-on-Hogsback, a centre that has existed for decades to provide experiential learning and graded exposure to natural spaces, aiming to increase environmental knowledge and nature-connection. The experiences of two groups of children from wide-ranging socioeconomic and socio-cultural backgrounds in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa were explored using interpretive case study methodology. Through semi-structured interviews and focus groups with selected children (aged 10-14) and the Hobbiton staff members who worked with them, as well as participant observation, data were collected and analysed thematically. This study was guided by a layered theoretical framework that included Deep Ecology as an under-labourer, and Cultural Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) as a substantive, analytical framework. Interactions between participants’ SCHVP and the sociomateriality of the nature- based activities were analysed in relation to the children’s nature-perceptions and sense of Connectedness-With-Nature. The findings highlight both the importance of the children’s SCHVP and the sociomateriality of the nature-based activities in mediating their prior perceptions of, and connectedness with nature. The nature-based activities acted as a primary stimulus for developing environmental empathy, awareness and pro-environmental intentions. In essence, Hobbiton acted as a primary ‘seed planter’ towards greater feelings of Connectedness-With-Nature. However, recommendations are put forward for more decolonised, ethics-oriented and sociomaterial design of Hobbiton’s nature-based activities, with an emphasis on integrating children’s SCHVP into the pedagogical-design process in relation to the sociomaterial elements of the nature-based activities. Emically integrating the children’s multiplicities of knowing, doing, valuing and being into the pedagogical-design process could contribute to the decolonisation of nature-based experiences in such contexts cultural, socio and political diversity.

Spatial variation in modelled hydrodynamic characteristics associated with valley confinement in the Krom River wetland: implications for the initiation of erosional gullies

- Description: Gully erosion is a significant and widespread feature of southern African wetlands, including the wetlands of the Krom River, Eastern Cape. Gully erosion in wetlands is consistently being viewed as a major contributing factor to wetland degradation and eventual collapse. Many gullies exist in the Krom River and Working for Wetlands has spent large sums of money to stabilise head-cuts with the expectation that further erosion would be halted and possibly avoided altogether. Observations in the Krom River wetlands have revealed that most gullies in the wetland are initiated where the width of the trunk valley has been reduced as a consequence of deposition by tributary alluvial fans that impinge on the trunk valley and reduce its width. The aim of this study was to examine variation in hydrodynamic characteristics for a range of discharges, as flow in the broad Kompanjiesdrif basin (~250 meters wide) is confined in a downstream direction to a width of less than 50 meters by a combination of a large impinging left bank tributary alluvial fan that coincides with a resistant bedrock lithology. The study was done by collecting topographical survey data using a Differential Global Positioning System in order to create a Digital Terrain Model with a suitable resolution. Flow was recorded using a Marsh-McBirney Model 2000 Flo-Mate as well as recording the flood extent for each flow condition; this was used in the calibration process of the model. Vegetation measurements were conducted in order to calculate a roughness value across the valley floor. A two-dimensional raster based flood inundation model, CAESAR-Lisflood and a one-dimensional hydraulic analysis model, HEC-RAS, were then used to simulate different parameters associated with variation in discharge, including flow velocity, water depth and stream power, thereby creating a better understanding of the hydraulic characteristics that may promote the formation of gullies in the wetland. Based on these hydraulic analyses it is evident that the effect of impinging alluvial fans on hydraulic characteristics such as flow velocity, water depth and stream power, may lead to the initiation of gullies within the Krom River wetland. This work improves understanding of the collapse of palmiet wetlands in steep-sided valleys within the Cape Fold Mountains of South Africa, and can aid in wetland management.

- Description: Although the sport of rugby union is well established, the strength and conditioning practices of high school level players are not well known. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the current strength and conditioning practices that coaches implement at South African high school level rugby. A secondary purpose was to compare practices between different types of schooling systems available in South Africa. An online survey or in person interview (depending on the school), adapted from previous strength and conditioning questionnaires, was conducted with 43 responses; including 28 schools among the top 100 rugby schools in South Africa for 2016 and 15 no-fee paying public schools in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. Results indicated that the top 100 rugby schools implement conditioning practices similar to the best-known international practices compared to no-fee paying schools who lacked the knowledge and skills in various strength and conditioning principles. It was found that all no-fee paying school coaches had insufficient qualifications to administer the correct training techniques. Coaches at all schools lacked the appropriate knowledge on injury prevention and scientifically based training programmes. It was concluded that education and skills around the best strength and conditioning practices for school level coaches needs to be improved and particularly in less privileged schools. The main goal being to reduce the risk of injury and improve performance across all sectors of the rugby playing population within the country. This was deemed crucial to the transformation goals set out by the South African Rugby Union, which would benefit from player development in lower socioeconomic schools.

For example, the World Health Organisation has estimated that there are over one million completed suicides every year, of which about 75% occur in middle and low income countries. In South Africa, suicide is one of the leading causes of non-natural death, but remains under-researched from an economic point of view due to limited data availability. Using monthly data for the period 2006-2015, this study explores whether there is a relationship between suicide and the South African business cycle. This is further broken down to examine how, if at all, this relationship with the business cycle differs across age-, gender-, and racial groups. The primary source of data for suicide and demographic groups were obtained from Statistics South Africa’s Mortality and Causes of Death Data from Death Notification released since 2006. The coincident indicator was used as a proxy for the business cycle as it represents the business cycle in real time. Using an autoregressive distributed lagged model (ARDL), a long run relationship was established with suicide being a function of the coincident indicator, divorce and fertility rate. The findings of this paper show that the overall suicide rate moves with the South African business cycle (i.e. pro-cyclical relationship) in the long run. This relationship holds for males, the black population group and the 15-29 and 30-44 age categories. In addition, the divorce rate had a positive and significant relationship with the overall suicide rate, as well as suicide among the black population group and for the 30-44 age category, whereas fertility rates had no significant relationship with suicide.

- Description: Gold in the highly prospective Twangiza-Namoya Gold Belt (TNGB) in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with its four main deposits at Twangiza, Kamituga, Lugushwa and Namoya, appears to be correlated with the presence of sulphide minerals. The sulphur isotope signatures of the pyrites from the TNGB deposits show an overall range from -18.4%o to +22.6%o. S34 values in host rock pyrite are: -2.2%o to +3.0%o (Twangiza deposit), -4.2%o to -0.6% (Kamituga deposit), -18.4% to -12.7% (Lugushwa deposit), and +12.4% to +22.6% (Namoya deposit). - Description: Gold in the highly prospective Twangiza-Namoya Gold Belt (TNGB) in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), with its four main deposits at Twangiza, Kamituga, Lugushwa and Namoya, appears to be correlated with the presence of sulphide minerals. Due to this increase in the buying and selling of digital goods and services, revenue authorities have had to recognise that the existing taxation laws do not adequately tax the digital economy. The goal of this research was to establish how South Africa could amend its fiscal legislation in order to adequately tax the digital economy. The Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development (OECD) has been the leader in addressing the challenges posed by the digital economy. The thesis therefore focused on the recommendations by the OECD on how to tax the digital economy and relevant recommendations for South were adopted in this thesis, based on the work of the OECD. The main focus of these recommendations was on implementing the International VAT/GST Guidelines that were drafted by the OECD. The thesis also focused on the progress made by New Zealand with regard to taxing of the digital economy. New Zealand has a similar taxation system to South Africa so that the progress made there was relevant in the South African context. Recommendations were also made, based on the proposals by the New Zealand revenue authority that South Africa could adopt in taxing the digital economy. The main focus of these recommendations was lowering the Value-Added Tax (VAT) registration threshold for non-resident suppliers of electronic services and enacting legislation to provide for registration of an electronic marketplace for VAT purposes, instead of an individual supplier.

The Eco-Schools programme has, over its decade-long history, provided support to teachers in schools registered as Eco-Schools. The value created by the diverse support practices is not well known or understood. The study aimed to shed light on the support teachers in the Eco-Schools programme value and how this contributes to environmental learning and practice. Working with Wenger’s Communities of Practice theory (Wenger, 1998) as a conceptual framework and lens, the study set out to describe and explore the processes of teacher learning amongst a sample of teachers supported to function as a professional learning community within the Eco-Schools programme. The findings and recommendations made are in relation to the research goals which are to explore and describe the value being created by the patterns of teacher support in an Eco-Schools node/cluster. To this end, the evaluative study generated evidence in relation to what teachers derive value from through the support they receive; and assessed evidence on how teaching, learning, and practice are developing through participation in the Eco-Schools Professional Learning Community examined. The study was conducted in 2 phases, the first as a survey of the patterns of support in Eco-School clusters/ nodes. The descriptions enabled a mapping of the patterns of support in the “coordinator supported model” of Eco-Schools to understand how the coordinator supported model of Eco-Schools enables teacher collaboration and supports the development of an environment and sustainability community of practice between teachers from across the cluster/ node. The second part of the study explored teacher’s perspectives of value derived from participation in an expanded model of Eco-Schools support, using an appreciative inquiry methodology to extract teacher narrations of value creation and meaning-making. In relation to goal one, the main findings indicate that the patterns of support enabled teachers to develop confidence and skills for action taking and responding to local socio-economic and environmental challenges. The data also reflected local partnerships with other environmental knowledge organisations, thus adding value to the programme through an expanded network of environmental practice and provision of additional resources. In relation to goal 2 of the study, teachers experienced Eco-School practices as personally meaningful and connected to their identity. Teachers expressed value in the training they had received through the Fundisa for Change programme which deepened their understanding of the implementation requirements of the Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statements (CAPS) and helped to connect knowledge concepts in the curriculum with sustainability practices implemented as part of the Eco-Schools framework. In relation to goal 3, teachers gained confidence in “Teaching Biodiversity” through the Fundisa for Change training. Teachers were better able to understand the Specific Aims of the Biodiversity curriculum (CAPS) and to adapt their teaching methods to support the CAPS content and assessment requirements. Teacher portfolios also showed evidence of teachers developing skills in analysis of learner performance and an awareness of the need to adjust their teaching and assessment strategies to address “gaps” in learner understanding.

This research explores how special needs pedagogical approaches in South Africa can transform their classroom practices to embrace creative and collaborative teaching methods such as drama. Drama-in-education (D-i-E) is an area where the learner and teacher relationship is characterised by creativity and engagement. This qualitative study considers the uses of drama as a teaching and learning method for learners in the Skills Phase class at Kuyasa Special School, Grahamstown. The research aimed to provide learners with intellectual barriers to learning with access to D-i-E. This was done through a series of practical drama lessons, which broadly aimed to enhance life skills and work environment competencies such as communication, problem-solving and interpersonal relations. The lessons followed a cross- curricular approach that integrated aspects of the Life Orientation (Grade 10-12) curriculum and the Drama (Creative Arts Grade 7-9) curriculum. This practice-led study reflects on how Dorothy Heathcote’s teacher-in-role (t-i-r) drama technique was implemented to teach topics and themes extracted and adapted from the Life Orientation learning area. This drama-based pedagogy employs three elements of Freire’s problem-posing education model, which are learner-centred, problem-posing and liberated pedagogy. The study discusses how these elements manifested in the lessons conducted, and how this approach benefited and improved the learners’ critical thinking skills, self-esteem and confidence. This study therefore provides a broad understanding of the possibilities of a drama-based pedagogy within a South Africa context of learning disability, proposing an alternative pedagogical approach in South African special schools. The findings contribute to the academic literature on D-i-E in South Africa and advocate for the inclusion of learners with learning disabilities within the performing arts education.

This study sought to develop an understanding of what the coursework writers’ and lecturers’ priorities were in designing and assessing academic literacy as expressed in the English for Academic Purposes (EAP) module, and to explain contradictions. As part of this process, it sought to identify the module’s strengths and weaknesses in terms of an understanding of literacy as a social practice, and to recommend changes if necessary. My interest in this module is a result of two interrelated factors. Firstly, as a novice part-time lecturer at NUST, I became concerned at the prevailing high EAP failure rate, which suggested that the course was not in fact promoting the academic literacy of the students. At the same time, my own attempts at ‘equipping’ students with the required academic literacy skills were frustrating. Both these factors suggested that the design and assessment of the course might be misaligned with its purported aims. To carry out this research, I employed an interpretive paradigm using a qualitative approach. I draw on theories in the field of academic literacies by Gee, Street and Lea. The methodology for the study was a document analysis of coursework materials and assessments, supplemented by interviews with available course designers. The key finding of the research is that the aims of the module are undercut by its structure and presentation. The design and assessment tasks of this module, while they aim at giving epistemological access through the development of students’ academic literacy skills, are unlikely to achieve it. This finding explains to some extent the poor throughput rate of the course.
