- Description: Spectral properties of metallophthalocyanines and other tetraazaporphyrins are governed mainly by the Q band which originates from the π-π* transitions within the ring. The position and intensity of the Q band is important in tailoring new phthalocyanine derivatives for particular applications. Aggregation, the nature of the central metal, π conjugation, symmetry of the molecules, and axial, peripheral or non-peripheral substitutions affect the spectra and hence the properties of the phthalocyanine molecule. This review gives a brief outline on how optical spectroscopy provides useful informations on molecular and electronic structures, chemistry and physics of phthalocyanines and other tetraazaporphyrins.

- Description: The changing context of higher education and the challenges this presents to lecturers has led to the introduction of accredited professional development courses for academics in some institutions. Many lecturers in higher education are finding that teaching the way they were taught and using the traditional lecture format is no longer always appropriate. If graduates are to function effectively in today's world, lecturers need to create teaching and learning contexts which promote their ability for life-long learning. Research shows that in order to achieve this, students need to be actively engaged in the learning process. This may require shifts in the way lecturers perceive their role. A central theme of the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education and Training (PGCHET) course discussed in this article is that of the critically reflective practitioner. From the research conducted it is clear that encouraging lecturers to reflect on their practices, to examine the epistemologies underpinning their disciplines along with what that means for teaching and learning, and then presenting them with a range of theoretical frameworks can lead to their developing or changing their conceptions of teaching. However, for the course developers it is also important to understand the factors that may militate against participants implementing new ideas and developing their practice.

- Description: preprint , There can be few shows that test the dimensions and pitfalls of 'globalised' theatre as thoroughly as Welcome Msomi's Umabatha. The worldwide success of the show, in box-office terms, can hardly be argued with. And yet, in its very conception, the vehicle is so riven by intrinsic cultural, theatrical, class and 'nationist' tensions that different audiences cannot but reap utterly different experiences, depending on their own cultural and intellectual inheritance. The show is an instance where theatre practice (sometimes) obfuscates political and aesthetic discourse, showing how easily cultures miss each other and fail to connect, and how easily specific historical, geographical and imperial associations are swamped by shallow 'globalised' audience response.

- Description: Cyclohexene photooxidation catalyzed by zinc phthalocyanine (ZnPc) using either red or white light results in the formation of cyclohexenone, cyclohexenol, trans-cyclohexanediol, cyclohexene oxide and cyclohexene hydroperoxide. The product yield increased as follows: cyclohexenone > cyclohexenol > trans-cyclohexanediol > cyclohexene oxide > cyclohexene hydroperoxide. The mechanism for the formation of these products involves both singlet oxygen and radicals (Type II and Type I mechanisms, respectively). The catalyst degraded slowly when low light intensities were employed. The product yields were found to depend on the light intensity, the nature of solvent, irradiation time and the rate of photodegradation of the catalyst.

- Description: The subgenus Otohime of the triglid genus Pterygotrigla is revised and includes descriptions of six new species (P. amaokai, P. draiggoch, P. elicryste, P. hafizi, P. soela, and P. urashimai) and diagnoses of five previously described species (P. arabica, P. hemisticta, P. multipunctata, P. spirai, and P.tagala). All are poorly represented in museum collections and are distributed in tropical waters of the Indian and western Pacific oceans. The subgenus Otohime is unique within Pterygotrigla in having a very long opercular spine and cleithral spines reduced or absent . The species characters used for identification are the number of joined pectoral-fin rays and second dorsal-rays, colouration of the pectoral fin and first dorsal fin, breast squamation, and number of gill rakers and a few other meristic and morphometric features. Otohime species are very similar in morphometry and meristics and the extent of intraspecific variation is indeterminable from the small collections available. A brief discussion of the genus Pterygotrigla is provided together with its current species composition that is thought to include the unresolved triglid Prionotus alepis. A range extension is given for Pterygotrigla macrorhynchus.

- Description: mLAN is a networking technology based on the IEEE 1394 standard that allows for the transport of audio and music control data between audio devices. In the original implementation of mLAN, software within each mLAN node hosted by an audio device contained high level plug abstraction and connection management software. mLAN-B is the next generation mLAN architecture that splits the connection management function between workstation and device. The high level connection management and plug abstraction capability resides on the workstation, while a thin low level connection management capability is left on the device. This approach reduces cost and complexity on the device side and ensures that mLAN systems can be easily upgraded.

- Description: In recent years the World Wide Web has transformed into a dynamic, interactive medium, exposing a proliferation of on-line services that dis-tribute large quantities of multimedia. This has increased awareness of the need to select an appropriate Web programming technology when creating Webbased services. This paper compares three dynamic Web programming technologies from the point of view of performance in multimedia distribution. In particular, this paper examines Sun Microsys-tem’s Java Server Pages (JSP), Microsoft’s Active Server Page’s (ASP) and the more recent ASP .NET. The comparison is based on testing applications that distribute multiple images from an Oracle 9i database to Web-enabled clients. Previous research conducted by Oracle indi-cates that JSP and the underlying Java platform outperform ASP. The results in this paper, however, do not agree with Oracle’s statement as JSP tends to be marginally slower than ASP.

- Description: Converged TDM and packet-based communications systems are a popular topic in computer science and telecommunications arenas. This paper discusses a system called Asterisk that is an open source hybrid TDM and packet voice platform. Asterisk is designed to interface any piece of telephony hardware or software with any telephony application. This makes Asterisk a powerful component that can be easily used in NGN softswitches, conferencing servers and Private Branch eXchanges (PBX). Asterisk has been deployed in the Rhodes University Computer Science Department’s VoIP environment and integrated with our existing H. 323 and SIP packet-based networks. This paper discusses the de-ployment of Asterisk, its interworking with our H. 323 and SIP networks and the functionality it offers in terms of a converged TDM and packet-based communications system.

Basalt geochemistry and tectonic discrimination within continental flood basalt provinces
- Authors: Marsh, Julian S

- Description: Continental flood basalts are usually regarded as a single tectonomagmatic entity but frequently quoted examples exhibit a variety of tectonic settings. In one well-studied, classic, flood basalt province, the Mesozoic Karoo province of southern Africa, magmatism occurred in the following tectonic settings: (a) continental rifting leading to ocean-floor spreading in the South Atlantic Ocean (Etendeka suite of Namibia); (b) stretched continental lithosphere and rifting not leading directly to ocean-floor formation (Lebombo suite of southeastern Africa); and (c) an a-tectonic, within-plate, continental setting characterized by an absence of faulting or warping (Lesotho highlands and Karoo dolerites of South Africa).
