- Description: Online version of original print edition of the Special Publication of the J.L.B. Smith Institute of Ichthyology; No. 16 , This paper arose out of difficulties in identifying collections of gobies whose upper pectoral fin rays are silklike and partially or predominantly free of membrane. Four such species have been recorded from South Africa, but there has been considerable confusion over their identification . Various unreported characters were found useful in separating the species. Certain problems exist in separating J.L.B. Smith's type specimens from the general collection. He invariably separated one specimen (labelled as "type") which was stored in a special type cupboard. This occurred whether or not a holotype was actually designated in the original description. Thus, particularly in his earlier works where no holotype was designated, these specimens (for new species based on more than one specimen) are nomenclatorally syntypes. I will refer to such "type" specimens as "syntype (= putative lectotype)". The remaining specimens (either the rest of the syntypic series or, later, the paratypes) were returned to the general collection. Owing to space limitations, all specimens of the same species were, where possible, kept in a single large jar. Paper tags were sewn on to the specimens, giving locality and date of collection. These tags have an unfortunate tendency to disintegrate. Subsequent separation of syntypes and paratypes is, therefore, subject to error. Since in a syntypic series I am referring to a "putative lectotype", the remainder of such series will be called "syntypes (= putative paralectotypes)".

Distribution of Ca in highly fractionated peralkaline magmas

- Description: Many peralkaline rhyolites and granites contain less than 0.15 wt.% CaO. In contrast, strongly fractionated peralkaline nepheline syenites and phonolites usually contain greater than 0.5 wt.% CaO. Consideration of known distributions of Ca between crystals and liquid in conjunction with crystal fractionation does not provide an adequate explanation of the contrasting levels of Ca depletion observed. Examination of the suites of late-crystallizing accessory phases in peralkaline rocks suggests that Ca is more soluble in undersaturated magmas than in over-saturated magmas. Activities for CaO in silicic and phonolitic rocks are calculated and the latter have higher CaO activities than the former and this may manifest itself in the different suites of accessory phases and levels of Ca depletion noted in natural rocks.

- Description: The purpose of this paper is to, survey the farm labour conditions in the Eastern Cape over approximately two decades and to note some of the conditions of service and the attitudes of employers, and the changes which have occurred in employment and wages paid. The main source for the latter period, and in particular 1973, is a farm labour survey conducted in conjunction with E.A. Thomson in the Eastern Cape. The survey relied entirely on the willingness of members of farm study groups and Farmers' Associations as well as interested individuals for its completion. Of the approximately 1020 pre-coded questionnaires which were posted to farmers throughout the Eastern Cape in June 1973, 303 were returned of which 299 were suitable for analysis.

- Description: The structure of the title compound [(C7H4NO8U)(C7H11N2)]2 has been determined by Patterson and Fourier methods from single crystal X-ray diffraction data collected on a four-circle diffractometer. Full-matrix least-squares refinement yielded a final conventional R of 0.041 for 2189 reflections. The complex crystallizes in the space group P with a = 11.004(5), b = 9.981(5), c = 9.928(5) Å, α = 119.6(3), β = 107.7(3), γ = 81.9(3)°, Dm = 2.17, Dc = 2.173g cm−3. The structure is dimeric. The uranium atoms are eight-coordinate and are bridged via centrosymmetrically related carboxylic oxygen atoms. The nitrate group is bidentate and the average U---O (ligand) distance is 2.463 Å. Hydrogen bonding of the type N---HO links two dimethyl-aminopyridine molecules to the dimer.

- Description: The Pomona ring complex consists of several intrusive masses of syenitic magma that define a differentiation trend towards silica oversaturation. Volume relations, sequence of intrusion, and broad chemical characteristics are consistent with the syenites being derived by feldspar fractionation from an immediate syenitic parent. A plug of nepheline syenite and tinguaite dykes indicate the availability of silica-undersaturated magma generally in the Luderitz Province.

- Description: Crystals of the title compound are monoclinic with a= 8.314 (5), b= 22.723 (9), c= 12.589 (6) A, /3= 123.0 (2t, Z=4, space group P2dc. The structure was determined by Patterson and Fourier methods and refined by full-matrix least squares to a final R of 0.030 for 2043 independent reflexions. The U atom has pentagonal bipyramidal coordination and the N-methylacetylacetoneamine is bonded to U via O. There are two intramolecular N-H. . .0 hydrogen bonds which govern the geometry of the adduct molecule.
